Zoe Popper has visions at the most inconvenient moments, like when trying to meet guys in a bar. She thinks she’s going crazy. Her dad was the same, and it killed him. But when she meets a mysterious gentleman who offers to become her teacher, it forces her to confront her darkest fears. As she fights to hold her family together, Zoe realises she must risk her sanity for a glimpse of the truth. But will the prize be worth it? After all, what use is enlightenment if you can’t hold on to the people you love?
Sometimes you think you’re going crazy, but really… you’re going sane.
Addled: Adventures of a Reluctant Mystic is a novel about spiritual awakening that explores the line between mysticism and madness in a world where everything is relative and nothing is sacred. Using the philosophy of Zen Buddhism, it follows one woman’s quest to find inner peace and self-knowledge, and offers an alternative perspective on mental illness and how to turn a breakdown into a revelation.

This is the compelling story of a cynic and atheist who suffers from mystical experiences, which she fears signal mental illness. Her disturbed childhood and problematic relationship with both her mother and brother offer little support as she is thrust into the adult world full of confusion and disturbing cross-currents. She meets a musician, himself with a troubled childhood, and together they manage to form a supportive relationship. But she once again is plagued with doubts and delusions and then goes on a spirit journey that involves regular visits from a guru who, it turns out, lives far away. Despite bits of magical realism that thread through the book, it is a compelling and believable tale of a spiritual journey, grounded in the real world.
This is my favorite genre and I love the thought provoking narrative. I wish some of the scenes would've gone into more detail before jumping ahead, but maybe it was me. I just started her "The Shining Ones" and it looks to be more in-depth (again, my niche so I'm happy).
