Ten Serizawa has a two-hour commute through the mountains to high school every day, so she can’t spend much time hanging out with her friends in the afternoon. She decides to move into the local boardinghouse, where one of her friends and three other boys are living. Ten’s friends consider her to be as oblivious as a rock when it comes to noticing boys and falling in love, but will she be able to keep her calm and steady heart in her new living situation?
I love Chiaki! And he finally works up the courage to tell Ten how he feels. He’s a wonderfully obtuse and perceptive person. Somehow he holds both inside himself at the same time. It’s delightful. I wish there were more confusingly honest conversations between him and others.
Ten also finally makes her move. I liked that she felt she had to talk to Chiaki first. She always impresses me with how she thinks things through and then acts in the way she thinks is right. She’s adorable how bold snd shy she is in approaching Riku. We end on a cliffhanger that does make me curious how Ten is going to respond!
However I miss hearing things from the other residents of the house. We also haven’t seen Riku’s relation in a while. We’ve gone suddenly romance crazy and I enjoyed the manga better when it was more slice of life in nature. I really don’t see where the story can go from here.
Shortcake Cake vol 6 brought the romance to a head. Ten makes her decision right as Chiaki decides to step forward. Riku is cautiously optimistic! It was cute and adorable, and squee worthy.
Updated Review 5/14/25: I am reminded that any time in the past when I've skimmed through this series, I've always start here, and now I remember why! It is one of my favorite volumes! SO much squealing and happiness in these pages!! EEEEEPPP!
Original Review 6/18/22: MUCH FLAILING!!!!!! *squeezes volume with giddiness*
We are finally (FINALLY) back to the team Riku ship vibes and IT IS SO WHOLESOME!!! I can’t even with these two!! They are so adorable and feel that all of Ten’s internal dialogue is sooooo incredibly accurate that’s it’s almost bizarre! (I keep getting flashbacks to high school me! LOL!)
I feel Chiaki redeemed himself with me in this one and glad that Ten was so direct with him.
But goodness, that ONE SCENE! If only someone hadn’t interrupted!!
Ten is so dense urgh. I'm halfway through this series and so far nothing has happened. I like slice of life manga/anime but they need to have interesting characters or something going on for me to get behind. This series is just your typical shoujo romance with generic bland characters and no plot except a girl living in a boarding house which itself is a very common trope in shoujo manga. The art is nice but at the same time there are a lot of panels of nothing but particle effects so it's not that impressive.
Poor Chiaki is getting left in the dust, but like I just don't see why he's interested in Ten?? Like I just don't feel anything between them. I really didn't expect this tho?? Like Chiaki definitely has all the makings of the first love interest?? How did he become love interest two?? I got bamboozled into liking the first love interest lol. Riku is a cutie tho. I hope we get more Chiaki x Riku friendship content.
Argh. The series is going downhill for me, because I just don’t like this pairing. It feels like Ten has undergone a personality change, turning into a shy love struck miss that can’t say what she thinks. I know she’s in love now, but it just doesn’t fit her personality yet after deciding to keep it to herself, she basically does confess? The plot was bouncing all over the place.
I honestly think Chiaki makes more sense as her partner. I do like that the two of them face each other honestly, and she doesn’t lead him on. He is showing extreme maturity about the situation, unnaturally so. Ten’s love for Riku doesn’t seem to have any basis, as he is not particularly nicer than any of the other guys, and is actually kind of fake in a lot of ways. He flirts all the time, and that’s basically it for his personality. Oh, and he’s obviously got a troubled past and family situation.
In the beginning it seemed to be setting up Chiaki as male lead, so maybe there will be a surprise twist?

halfway through now and i think she’s gonna end up with book kid since outgoing kid isn’t the one who inspired her to join the house.
that’s the thing with love triangles, you always know who they’re gonna end up with. i don’t think a love triangle has ever once surprised me. so at that point its just a long drag until she finally ends up with the predestined guy.
but this one is cute. i’m liking seeing her actually explore the option we know isn’t the final one.

This series is just cotton candy, it's cute and fluffy with no substance. So far feels like six volumes of nothingness, with a little bit of gentle pining. It's only 12 volumes so I'm going to finish it so I can book talk it, what if things go nuts in the second half? We still don't know what the deal is with Riku and his brother, and it feels like it hasn't come up in a while where right now it seems like it just existed to get Ten and Chiaki to fake date.
I thought I knew how I felt about this series but the more I read the less sure I am. The cliff hangers at the end of every volume are getting a bit annoying, I’ll admit. Though this volumes one hit me differently... I’m contemplating either buying some more volumes or maybe buying some online to save money...
I like that Ten is communicating her feelings, but this is the driest love triangle I have ever seen. Chiaki and Riku, y'all are BORING! I'll probably end up finishing this series just from being a completionist.
On the positive note, I think the artwork has improved and the fashions are very cute.
Is Riku endgame...?!?! I really thought it would be Chiaki but Ten is down BAD for Riku...and the confession just happened, lots of blushing and fretting....it's freaking adorable!!! Riku is also so thoughtful and careful to make sure he's not upsetting Ten. BWAHHHH need more now!!!!!!

Chiaki kissed Ten in vol 5, and Ten admits her feelings for Riku while also putting Chiaki down nicely.
I'm glad things are moving along more, but I'm kind of hoping for more development from other characters. They're mentioned on the 'character list', but we hardly ever see anyone except Ten, Chiaki, and Riku.
This is starting to get long :((( I liked the chapter with Riku and Ten's outing, but everything just feels like its dragging. Nothing of substance is really happening? I wish they focused more on the dynamics between everyone in the house. The comedy panels at the end were so fun I just wish the entire manga was like that.
Bought the next couple of manga volumes to continue the series and see if it gets better, but I feel like I may regret this later. Art style is really cute, but it can't distract my distaste for some of the characters.
Overall I enjoyed this one. We're fully immersed in the love triangle and it's really conflicting for me. Time spent with Chiaki and Ten and Ten and Riku. Definitely some humorous parts!
This felt super short as a volume, but a good amount did happen and I'm fairly chill with how this one left off. Ten reminds me somewhat of Tohru at times when she worries about how her decisions affect her housemates and their feelings.
Lot of thinking about stuff on Ten’s part this volume. Not a lot of progression, but still really enjoyed it. The art feels like it’s gotten quite a bit better since the initial volumes.
