Pretty suspenseful
They Came With the Snow is a short but creepy story. I was concerned it might be a cliffhanger since it was a "part" of a story but thankfully I was wrong. It had a great ending. A unique and creepy short story just right for bedtime reading.

They Came with the Snow is a fairly short, novella-length story that grabs the reader fairly quick. Chris Coleman is adept at putting the reader immediately in the story, and making certain that the reader remains engaged and anticipatory throughout.
A post-apocalyptic event occurs that feels implausible. I will not reveal here, but I was not happy with where the story went. If I had not received more of these books for free, and I was not a Chris Coleman fan, I might not continue with this story. I feel committed to continuing to see where it takes me.
This is part I of the series and I will hope that it gets better. Usually the survivors of apocalyptic events demonstrate themselves to be the dregs of society as they are here. I hope that there are better characters on the horizon. Some of them, one of them, have to be worthy of survival.
A post-apocalyptic event occurs that feels implausible. I will not reveal here, but I was not happy with where the story went. I'll just skip to the end. The evil government, particularly the military industrial complex, is responsible, deliberately experimenting on U.S. citizens with a miniature apocalypse. Haven't I seen this movie? Gee, don't we all want to live in a country where only the government has weapons? No. Wait. The government is evil. Wait! No it isn't, it's a benevolent wishing well which can give us all of our needs and desires. It's only the military and law enforcement that are evil. But wait, they're part of the government and we're going to need them to make all those reactionaries, Republicans, fascists, conservatives, Libertarians, fundamentalist and evangelical Christians - the whole basket of deplorables shut up and do as they're told so everything can be wonderful. It's all so confusing. Poor American liberals. Logic is not their strong suit.
Add in unlikable characters, particularly Dominic and Naia, a professor and student having an affair even though he is married; poor writing; predictable action; things such as jerry-rig instead of jurry-rig; no character development and you have an unpalatable mess. Fortunately I downloaded this particular mess through Kindle Unlimited. I really can wait indefinitely, or even longer, before reading something else in which the evil American military is the villain of the piece.
I probably shouldn't write reviews of stories such as this right after I have read a couple of days of U.S. and international news.

The monsters CAME WITH THE SNOW, and an illicit affair with a persistent student saved his life.....or did it?
For five weeks after the mysterious blast, Professor Dominic and Naia are trapped and alone on campus.....the white creatures with black eyes always watching.
Attempted escape proves disastrous, but leads to others in hiding resulting in confessions and a bit of hope, but what really happened? A guilt-ridden Dominic loves his wife....needs to see her again....and then......
A creepy but satisfying end....hehehe.
Super short, but lots of substance.

Five weeks after a strange explosion started an intense never-ending blizzard in May, professor Dominic Daniels and his former student Naia are hunkered down in the student union building of a small local community college. Food, shelter, warm clothing....safety from Them. Outside the snow keeps falling. After weeks of hiding out from strange white crab-like monsters lurking out in the snow, supplies are dwindling. Dominic and Naia need to try and make a run for the near-by mall. Can they make it past the monsters? Are there more survivors out there?
They Came With the Snow is a quick, creepy read. I enjoyed the story. There isn't anything new here really.....government/military/scientist conspiracy goes horribly wrong, causing an apocalyptic event. Survivors run from monsters. Horror ensues. It makes for an enjoyable, entertaining read. I was a bit confused as to the exact nature of the blast/bomb/whatever caused the sudden blizzard and demise of most people in this small college town....but this is Sci-FICTION, not science fact....so I can suspend reality a bit and just enjoy the monsters. The author has written a second story in this series that is longer and more detailed -- The Melting. So I'm hoping for some event clarification in the next book.
All in all, a well-written, enjoyable quick read. I'm always up for a good apocalyptic monster story! The monsters were weird and creepy. The premise is believable enough to keep me reading. And the characters are engaging. Dominic is a bit of an ass....but we all make bad decisions sometimes, right? At least he is honest about it. He knows he's an ass.... Makes for an awesome conflicted character.
I have The Melting waiting in my Kindle. More cold! More monsters! I'm ready! Bring it on!

A very quick and entertaining read.
I chose it because the snowflakes were falling outside my window and this looked like the right thing to go with the weather and boy, was it ever good!
Snowy apocalypse with some creatures that reminded a bit of zombies. It wasn't overly gory and gruesome but there were a few bloody deaths.
.....and I totally loved the ending!

This is a short one. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to like.
When an explosion cuts off the residents of a small town and plunges them into an apocalyptic winter, they have no one to call for help and must rely on their own ingenuity. Do they stay where they are? Or do they brave trying to go for help and risk coming up against the strange things that wait in the snow?
I love stories set in wintry landscapes. There’s something about having to battle the elements as well as the horrors prowling in it that makes for an edgy read.
The creepy, crab things that hide in the snow, only detectable by their cold black eyes peering out of the drifts, were this horror lovers delight. Always looking for new, creative monsters to scare the crap out of me. I think they stole the show from the characters, who didn’t really win me over. Good thing, as there’s no guarantees any will survive.
While this didn’t terrify me, it sure got the endorphins pumping. I’ll gladly read more by this author.

Dom and Naia were having an affair behind his wife's back which is why when the snow came, they were stuck at the college where she was his student. Outside in the snow, watching and waiting are the crab like creatures, cutting off their chance at escape but with food and fuel running out after five weeks, a run to the nearby mall through the trees might be their best bet.
The actual story was interesting if a little far fetched but I don't mind lack of realism in this kind of tale. What I didn't like was Dom. I don't greatly care about him cheating on his wife and I certainly liked Naia a lot better than him. Dom is rude, obnoxious, dismissive of any idea that isn't his own and likes to interrupt people who are talking so he can be heard. Frankly, the guy is an arse! He is constantly sarky and likes making smart retorts and I wish the crabs would just eat him. I have no plans to continue with the series.

Seriously awful writing.. the only way I can explain my continued reading is pity reading and maybe wishful thinking? I can only assume this guy doesn’t have anyone proof read his work, because the most glaring mistakes are abundant and he seems to only know how to give you an idea by telling you straight out with no precursor or inkling as to WHY that idea would ever come across. It’s a ridiculous read, but maybe if you’re bored and want to feel like you’re reading edit one of a high school writer’s plot line, this could be your cup of tea? It’s not mine, yet here I am, having finished book 2 lol

Having read a post apocalyptic series set in the snow and coming across this, I decided to read it for a compare/contrast exercise. It is a short piece set in a small county in the USA. In contrast to the first book, this has no slow build-up with lots of foreshadowing; instead it plunges straight into the action and is told in the present tense by the protagonist.
Dominic is an English professor at a college. He is stranded in the campus building with a student of his, Nia, who it becomes clear early on is his girlfriend - who he has been having an affair with unbeknown to his wife. Snow has fallen in summer, and they are the only people who didn't leave. The power goes off after some hint that this might be a universal problem. They have been living on the food supplies in the canteen, but are aware of strange white creatures hiding in the snow which at first number just a handful, but now appear in large packs and seem drawn to the humans. Dominic and Nia decide to leave and have to run from the creatures which become actively hostile.
Unlike the previous work which had a strong supernatural component, this one is science fictional. There is a rational explanation: one that buys straight into conspiracy theories and worst nightmares about what the authorities might really be doing. The main problem I had is that Dominic isn't at all a likeable character, with his cheating on his wife and the way he tends to use sarcastic humour. But it was interesting enough to keep me reading and continuing with the follow-up. A three star read.

I picked this one up on Amazon a little while back. I need more horror in my life and lately, it's been lacking. I figured I could fit this one in between other obligations without too much trouble. At only 37 pages, it's a super quick read.

A solid winter-themed horror story that reminded me of other similar books (first that came to mind was The Mist), so therefore was not really inventive or new. There were some unlikely plot twists, but the characters were well-drawn and the writing was decent, making me shiver with cold every now and then.

Dominic and Naia were in the Warren Community College 5 weeks ago when a nuclear attack, a meteor, something that created a massive explosion occurred, since then it’s been snowing non stop. Foot upon foot of snow. There’s something else that came with the explosion and it’s snowy aftermath; the crabs. They aren’t actual crustaceans but they have big dark eyes, and pure white bodies that blend into the snowy surroundings, and they watch and watch. Naia wants to see if there’s life outside the 2 of them but Dominic isn’t sure there is, and he isn’t sure about moving because they have supplies that will last them a lot longer. Perhaps the snow will recede and the crabs with it.
The story divulges more as it draws to a conclusion, but to tell is to give away plot and I’ll leave discoveries to you, dear fellow readers.
They Came With The Snow is gripping and well executed. I wanted to know what happened and why, and there’s sufficient answers. Characters are well developed, enough for you to think who you might like your fellow survivors to be if something cataclysmic happened in your lifetime. Enough to understand the ending. The author didn’t make everyone saints and didn’t pass judgement. I liked the concept of the crabs because the book takes one well-worn theme and replaces it with a fresher outlook. The ending suits the length of the book, which I’m unsure of~Amazon only gives you KB and I can’t convert that to page count. Overall this is an excellent, satisfying, cleverly written and chilling tale, and you close off mulling it over for some time afterwards.

I really don't like being negative but I just feel this novella was not thought out. It reminds me of a dream someone had and decided to quickly write it down before forgetting it.
The plot would only be believable to someone who swears to every conspiracy story ever told. I can best describe the characters as cardboard. Any decision any of them make to move the story along could be made by any of them with the exception of the final act by the main character which feels like it was done for the writer's convenience over believability.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this yet, so I'm setting it to "medium" and continuing on to the second book, "The Melting." Here, in "They Came With the Snow," we get an end of the world scenario with a philandering college professor and the annoying but nubile young co-ed he shacked up with. The world ends in a snowstorm, every one who was caught in the snowstorm mysteriously turns into white crab-like creatures, and the college professor immediately regrets his extramarital affair and wants the wifey back.
Yeah.
I'm off to the second book. Gotta figure these crabs out.

A very short Kindle read, not too original. A government experiment and cover up. The government sets off a bomb in a county, and then the snow starts...in May. Soon the lucky (?) surviors start to see mutated people, no clothes left on them and skin all white. They call them crabs, and all the crabs want to do is eat them. A group surviors band together and go looking to see if this is indeed the end of the world as they know it. Lots of grammar mistakes, missing words and mistakes with characters names.

It’s a novella… a perfectly contained story, easy to consume. And, even with its length — it”s 37 pgs — it still has twists. If you’re one who likes books that wrap the plot up in a pretty bow, this isn’t the read for you. They Came with the Snow doesn’t answer any of its questions. Still, I found it to be engaging… a story that grabs hold and doesn’t let go:

This is terrible but it was free from Prime reading. Slapdash story that reads more like a rough draft. Lazy writing and a halfassed plot.

For a novella, this is really good. If there wasn’t a part two, I wouldn’t like this book very much because of how it unattached I felt for those characters. I would look at this read as something like a half prequel. Doesn’t give you insight on what happened before the event, but kinda fills you in a little bit about our heroes and villains. I hope we get a good ending to this ‘The Mist’ type of book. I want to know how things got out of hand!
