I've given this an A- at AAR, so that's 4.5 stars rounded up.
When I read the first book in Virginia Heath’s Wild Warriners series, A Warriner to Protect Her I was instantly smitten with Captain James Warriner – Jamie – the second eldest brother and former officer who is no longer able to serve due to a debilitating injury to his leg. In that book, Jamie emerged as a taciturn man who will do anything for those he loves, whose outwardly gruff manner hides the heart of a romantic and the soul of an artist. A Warriner to Rescue Her reveals more about Jamie’s past and the demons that continue to haunt him as he struggles to come to terms with his injuries and find a new purpose in life – and sees him falling head-over-heels in love with a most unusual young lady. The romance between this unlikely couple is beautifully written and overflowing with tenderness, but Jamie isn’t the only one whose past has left him with more than a few dragons to slay – and watching these two different but damaged people find their way to each other is an absolute delight.
The Earl of Markham and his brothers have always been shunned by their neighbours and the local villagers owing to the fact that the previous earls were unpleasant, untrustworthy drunkards with vicious tempers who never paid what they owed. The current earl – Jack Warriner – inherited nothing but a ramshackle home and a mountain of debt, and even if he could have afforded servants, nobody would have wanted to work for him, so he and his three brothers had to work the land themselves in order to make enough money to keep body and soul together. Unable to take more of an active role in working the estate, Jamie took on the role of housekeeper at Markham Manor, but since Jack married an heiress who brought servants from her London home to work there, Jamie has more time on his hands than he knows what to do with.
He is riding home one day when he hears a cry for help coming from the apple orchard within the manor grounds. Seeing a horse standing beneath one particular tree, he looks up to see a rather nice backside and a pair of shapely legs dangling from some way up, and realises the female in possession of those lovely attributes is stuck. Awkwardly, Jamie climbs up and helps to free her from the branch that seems to have captured her skirts and is helping her to descend when the lady makes a wrong move and they both plummet to the ground. Jamie ends up winded and flat on his back with a face full of wild hair and a warm, curvy armful sprawled across his chest.
Cassandra Reeves hastily apologises for her clumsiness and introduces herself as the daughter of the new vicar, cringing inwardly at the fact that she has likely just crushed the handsomest man she has ever seen. But even that can’t keep her words from tripping over one another as she babbles on enthusiastically about wanting to get some apples for her horse and not realising that the apple trees were on private land.
When Cassandra – Cassie – pays a call the next day to thank Jamie for his assistance and to check that he is unhurt (she saw him limping and thinks he must have been hurt by their fall) – she is received warmly by Jack’s wife, Letty, but not by Jamie, who remains quiet and aloof throughout her visit. When she mentions to her hostess that she makes up stories as a hobby and has begun one about yesterday’s misadventure, Letty immediately and eagerly seizes the chance to do a bit of matchmaking, and tells Cassie about Jamie’s talent as an artist, going so far as to suggest that perhaps he could provide illustrations for her story and they could have it published.
Jamie is not best pleased at his sister-in-law’s meddling. He’s already somewhat smitten with the pretty, voluble vicar’s daughter but knows he has nothing to offer any woman; he’s broken, both mentally and physically and has no way of making a living, not to mention he’s afraid of the dark and has certain other quirks it would be impossible to keep from a wife. He brushes off Cassie’s questions and appreciation of the painting he is working on, and is surprised at the disappointment he feels at the likelihood that he will never see her again.
He is even more surprised, however, when Cassie visits again – this time in the company of her father, a fire-and-brimstone, bible-thumping bigot, whose overbearing, domineering manner turns Cassie into an unrecognisable shadow of the vibrant young woman Jamie knows her to be. Jack tries to be polite in the face of the man’s insults, but Jamie is furious at his treatment of his daughter and all but throws the man out. The Reverend Reeves is not one to take such treatment quietly, however, and having learned of the terrible reputation accorded to the Warriner family makes plans to denounce them in his next sermon.
Needing to assure himself that Cassie is safe and unharmed, Jamie braves the dark in order to speak to her properly, and during their conversation, finds himself opening up to her about his own father and telling her something of how he acquired his injuries. He obliquely invites her to meet him the next afternoon, and they spend a couple of hours very companionably while Jamie paints and Cassie tells him about the progress of her story. Such meetings become the norm, and they each start to wonder if perhaps their growing feelings are reciprocated and if there is any possibility of their making a future together.
Jamie and Cassie are attractive, fully-rounded characters, and Ms. Heath does a terrific job of portraying the longing they feel for each other and building the romantic tension while also establishing a strong emotional connection between them. But much as I liked Cassie, it’s Jamie who is the real star of the show. Perceptive, kind and sensitive, he’s a romantic at heart who pours his love of nature and beauty into his paintings, saying with them some of the things for which he can’t always find the words. Ms. Heath says in her author’s note that she had originally had different plans for Jamie in this story but that he clearly wanted to go in a different direction. I’m glad he did, because it makes him a most unusual and delectable hero and I fell hard for him.
A Warriner to Rescue her is a beautiful love story that’s imbued with warmth, sensuality and humour, and I raced through it in one sitting. It’s book two in a series, but can be read as a standalone, and I’m really looking forward to reading about Joe and Jacob Warriner in the near future.

Gosh, I really liked this one.
I selected A Warriner to Rescue Her because of the high marks awarded this author’s work by my fellow reviewers, who, I’m happy to say, didn’t steer me wrong!. The four Warriner brothers are outcasts in their community due to the sins of their forefathers and no matter how hard they work to redeem the family’s name it’s an uphill climb. Things are made worse when a militant reverend moves into their town and is set on making an example of the scandalously Wild Warriners.
Captain James Warriner is back home recovering from a debilitating leg wound that nearly cost him his life. The injury has left him with deep physical scars as well as the nightmares associated with how he was hurt which continually plague him. Jaime’s only comfort recently has been his love of painting and riding on his brother’s lands. While out riding through the family’s orchard Jamie is surprised to hear a woman’s voice calling out for help. Searching the area he comes across a pony wandering the path and a pair of stocking-clad legs hanging from the branches of a tree. Jamie is reluctant to help the woman out of the tree as his leg injury will make it difficult to support her weight, but his gentlemanly honor won’t let him leave. The rescue attempt goes about as poorly as Jamie predicted and he soon finds himself down on the ground with the distressed woman falling on top of him. Uncomfortable with being seen as a hero by the beautiful – if chatty – young woman, Jamie excuses himself from the scene and hopes the whole thing will be quietly forgotten.
Miss Cassandra Reeves cannot forget the handsome man who saved her from her own silliness. Her own Sir Galahad wasn’t too happy when she landed on him and Cassie feels guilty about possibly injuring him during the rescue. It’s not the impression Cassie hoped to make with the first person she’s met in Retford since she and her father, the Reverend Reeves, moved to the small town. Hoping to apologize for trespassing on the Warriner lands – and perhaps make a better impression – Cassie walks to the Markham Manor the following day and is met by the very friendly Countess of Markham and the still gruff Captain Warriner. In her nervousness, Cassie becomes a fount of information about the incident in the orchard, her recent move from another city and her love of writing stories.

Well, I appear to be in the minority here but this book was just okay for me. So many glowing reviews...I was expecting much more. Perhaps it was not a good idea to read it after reading a book by wordsmith Meredith Duran. This seemed simplistic and the writing almost seemed at a juvenile level. I hate to sound so snarky when I have no idea what it would take to write a novel but I basically had to force myself to finish the book. Pages and pages were devoted to the meaning behind a kiss. Both the H and the h agonizing over what was meant by it, wondering what the other felt, feeling not worthy of the other's affection. It reminded me of junior high.
The fact that the heroine wrote children's stories and the hero was a painter who volunteered to create illustrations of these stories that in fact loosely replicated somewhat silly events that happened to the H and the h sort of contributed to my feeling that this book was somewhat silly. Only the heroine's traumatic life with her crazy ass preacher father added some seriousness to the book. And in fact, the last 20% of the book which finally brought his abuse out in the open made me give the book a 3.

Sweet traumatized hero and lovely heroine
Jamie is a war veteran that was severely hurt on the leg. He has traumas from his childhood that were accentuated during the war and he considers himself unworthy. Cassandra is pure sunshine. She is bright and beautiful inside out. She has an abusive father but, to escape from her harsh reality, she writes sweet stories for children where animals talk. Jamie has an artistic talent and ends up illustrating her story. Two soulmates that have to overcome their fears (and a few misunderstandings) to have their HEA. Very sweet read!

This is the second book about the Warriner brothers and I loved it. James, aka Jamie, was badly wounded fighting Napoleon and lives in pain with a bad leg. His black stallion is as grouchy as James. While out riding, he comes across a dun pony with no rider. He discovers a young woman, Cassie, stuck in the tree that she climbed to get apples for her pony. Unfortunately, the tree limbs weren’t strong enough and they end up falling out of the tree. Cassie is the daughter of the new vicar who is not a good father.
After meeting the vicar, Jamie understands Cassie’s need to escape the vicarage. She writes children’s stories and Jamie, an artist, offers to illustrate them for her. They spend time together, but eventually her father finds out and is furious. I won’t ruin this wonderful story by telling you more. Of course there is a HEA and 2 more brothers waiting for their HEAs.
After meeting the vicar, Jamie understands Cassie’s need to escape the vicarage. She writes children’s stories and Jamie, an artist, offers to illustrate them for her. They spend time together, but eventually her father finds out and is furious. I won’t ruin this wonderful story by telling you more. Of course there is a HEA and 2 more brothers waiting for their HEAs.

The second in a four-book series this story is every bit as good as the first.
When a story makes your heart race, makes you cheer, laugh and cry, makes your stomach churn, makes you dream about the characters, makes you want to reach for the book as soon as you wake in the morning and every spare moment after that, you know the author has a winner on her hands.
Such a book is A Warriner to Rescue Her. Jamie and Cassie are wonderful together. Both are damaged by their experiences in life – Jamie by the war and Cassie by her home life but together they can overcome any obstacle on the way to a loving relationship.
The villain of the piece is a despicable character whom I would like to bury in a pit full of venomous snakes!
I was given an ARC in return for an honest review.

An enjoyable, quick read with humor, charm, and a romance I believed in.

I always had a thing for scarred/traumatized heroes and Jamie was just that kind of hero. The chemistry between Jamie and Cassie was alright. Jamie was quiet while Cassie was talkative. They fit well together.
Jamie and Cassie were both very strong people, because of what they have experienced.
As much as I enjoyed the story, I thought Jamie took his injuries too seriously because he allowed it to affect the relationship between him and Cassie, seeing as he refused to talk about with her. He continued to drag it out, convinced that she wouldn’t want him as he was crippled and scarred. If he would have just told her earlier, he could have seen that she didn’t care about it.
I also felt Cassie was too hung up about her being like her ‘wanton mother’ as her father always told her. She was convinced that Jamie always stopped from going too far with her because he didn’t like her being too forward and wanton. It wouldn’t have bothered him a bit if she’d just told him.
The way I see it, they had miscommunication because they both refused to tell each other what they really felt and a lot of time could have been saved, had they confided in each other.
Nice writing, though more action and less thinking would be nice.
Would like to have seen what happened to Cassie’s father. He deserved some kind of punishment for treating Cassie so horribly.

Jamie Warriner is one of four brothers who had been trying hard to bring their farm back to prosperity, and to eradicate the stain on their family name after years of cheating, neglect, and waste by their now deceased father. When older brother, Jack, married an heiress, their financial problems were solved, and Jamie now had time to go back to something he loves – painting beautiful scenery and wildlife. As a child, Jamie suffered terrible abuse and punishment from his father for indulging in such a “girlish” pursuit, but he refused to give it up. When Jamie became a soldier, he was badly injured, and now limps and has almost constant pain. In addition to the physical wounds, Jamie suffers from what we now call PTSD, and has trouble sleeping. This all contributes to making Jamie moody, abrupt, and distant.
Cassie Reeves is the new vicar’s daughter. As she’s out riding, exploring the area, she manages to get herself tangled and stuck in an apple tree, which happens to be on Warriner land. Jamie hears her cry for help, and comes to rescue her. Despite his painfully injured leg, he begins to climb the tree, but Cassie panics, and the ensuing scenes are truly delightfully funny. Jamie can’t get away from Cassie quickly enough, and abruptly tells her to stay off Warriner land. Cassie, seeing Jamie limp, believes that she caused the injury, and feels terrible.
When Cassie calls the next day to apologize, Jamie is initially annoyed, or so he thinks. Soon, he finds himself a little charmed and intrigued with the self-deprecating young lady. Somehow, when Jamie learns that she writes stories with talking animals for the children in her church, he finds himself illustrating them. As they meet regularly, barriers begin to drop, and they become genuine friends. The fairy tale stories mimic their own acquaintance, and Cassie casts Jamie as the hero, much to his surprise.
I do love to read about a wounded hero, and Jamie has so many issues that he feels make him unsuitable to pursue a relationship with Cassie, though they both clearly want to. Though Cassie is lovely, she is so insecure, and feels that she is not pretty enough, and is too flighty for someone like Jamie. To make matters worse, Cassie’s zealot father has taken an instant dislike to the Warriner family before even meeting them, based on gossip he heard. It turns out that he is irrational and cruel, and metes out horrible punishments to Cassie when she doesn’t live up to his exacting standards. I read A WARRINER TO RESCUE HER in one sitting, and adored every page, as it ticked all the boxes of things I love – the romance was slow building and sweet, the passion was there, I cared about and rooted for Cassie and Jamie, and there were a few scenes with the subtle humor I love. (The scene where Jamie is finally willing to show Cassie the scars on his hip and leg is priceless, as that’s not what she finds holding her attention!) I highly recommend A WARRINER TO RESCUE HER, and eagerly anticipate the next installment from Virginia Heath.
Jamie Warriner is one of four brothers who had been trying hard to bring their farm back to prosperity, and to eradicate the stain on their family name after years of cheating, neglect, and waste by their now deceased father. When older brother, Jack, married an heiress, their financial problems were solved, and Jamie now had time to go back to something he loves – painting beautiful scenery and wildlife. As a child, Jamie suffered terrible abuse and punishment from his father for indulging in such a “girlish” pursuit, but he refused to give it up. When Jamie became a soldier, he was badly injured, and now limps and has almost constant pain. In addition to the physical wounds, Jamie suffers from what we now call PTSD, and has trouble sleeping. This all contributes to making Jamie moody, abrupt, and distant.
Cassie Reeves is the new vicar’s daughter. As she’s out riding, exploring the area, she manages to get herself tangled and stuck in an apple tree, which happens to be on Warriner land. Jamie hears her cry for help, and comes to rescue her. Despite his painfully injured leg, he begins to climb the tree, but Cassie panics, and the ensuing scenes are truly delightfully funny. Jamie can’t get away from Cassie quickly enough, and abruptly tells her to stay off Warriner land. Cassie, seeing Jamie limp, believes that she caused the injury, and feels terrible.
When Cassie calls the next day to apologize, Jamie is initially annoyed, or so he thinks. Soon, he finds himself a little charmed and intrigued with the self-deprecating young lady. Somehow, when Jamie learns that she writes stories with talking animals for the children in her church, he finds himself illustrating them. As they meet regularly, barriers begin to drop, and they become genuine friends. The fairy tale stories mimic their own acquaintance, and Cassie casts Jamie as the hero, much to his surprise.
I do love to read about a wounded hero, and Jamie has so many issues that he feels make him unsuitable to pursue a relationship with Cassie, though they both clearly want to. Though Cassie is lovely, she is so insecure, and feels that she is not pretty enough, and is too flighty for someone like Jamie. To make matters worse, Cassie’s zealot father has taken an instant dislike to the Warriner family before even meeting them, based on gossip he heard. It turns out that he is irrational and cruel, and metes out horrible punishments to Cassie when she doesn’t live up to his exacting standards. He is truly an odious villain, and he totally creeped me out.

Move over Heathcliffe there is a new gruff, monosyllabic, tormented hero in town in the form of Captain Jamie Warriner. Oh my word! I was warned I would love him and he has more than lived up to the hype, he really is something special. He is a proud man who after serving his country with courage facing down more horrors than any man should face he is back and he is in pain, not just physically but he is trying adjust to civilian life but like a lot of soldiers today poor Jamie is struggling. I was drawn to him the moment I met him in the previous book “A Warriner to her” there is just something about this gruff but hugely sensitive man, that draws you in. Yes, he may be as stubborn as an OX – as well as built like one – but he has a good and kind heart, who needs a little love.
It has everything you would want from an HR, perfect love story entwined with each of our leads personal troubles. It is a breath-taking assault on the senses, you will laugh out loud, cry like a baby and go into a rage that our Jamie would be proud of.
It is a powerful story with real heart, it is rock solid and I couldn’t recommend it enough this one has to be read.

OMG How I laughed with the opening scene of the book!
The author was able to add a lot of humour in this story of two damaged souls, but not by laughing of them but with them.
Jamie and Cassie are broken in the inside, due to ordeals in their past or present..
Jamie knows too well he is suffering from PTSD, his years in the army and his father’s physical abuse left him with many behavioral disorders, because of these, he withdrew from any social life afraid to hurt anyone.
Cassie is still under the yoke of her fanatic reverent of a father. To protect herself, she has retreated in her own mind, creating funny stories to divert herself from her sad and boring life.
In many way, they are like the day and the night, while Jamie hides himself behind a hard and cold facade, Cassie is all wit and smile.
Together they will suffer of big cases of attraction but also of misunderstanding. Their so low self esteem incapacitates them to believe someone can find them interesting and warm for them.
I loved this story, to see again the previous protagonists plus the different Warriner’s brothers and some new characters, it has the perfect dose of humour, introspection and action.
A great read to recommend to any one who look for a nice story where the knight even with his not so shining armor will be able to slay the dragon hidden in a scaring human pelt.

I literally could not put this awesome book down, was completely drawn in to the story and emotions of the characters as they unfolded having read #1 which I loved I knew what I may expect but it still blew me out of the water and I so very much enjoyed it, definitely cant wait to read #3 in the near future as the characters unfold more definitely adore this series and the author who wrote them cannot fault a single word any who love Historical Romance will love this it has everything from humour to tears in every setting truly wonderful read I must admit I did weep myself along with the characters but gladly come the end was weeping I joy.

Today I finish the 2nd book in Virginia Heath's Wild Warriners series, "A Warriner to Rescue Her". And... I loved it!
I had found Captain James Warriner very interesting when I read about him in the first book, and I was so excited to read about him in this book because I truly felt there was something really special in his heart and he deserved love too.
The book starts with Jamie finding Miss Cassandra Reeves stuck in a tree and in need of help to get down. Which meant that Jamie had to climb the tree to help her out. Sound like a easy solution of course, but things are never that simple. And that's how things beginning.
Cassie is the only daughter of Reverend Reeves, and like Jamie, she has her own demons to slay. Then again, we all have fears and nightmares in our minds, which made both character - Jamie and Cassie - so relatable.
I hated Reverend Reeves way before he talked. I see him as a horrid human being, that recites bible versus at her and everyone that is doing or saying something against him or that goes against his twisted values. And, of course, he doesn't like the Warriner's, like all the people that gossip about them. And with all the rumors about them, no wonder he decides to helped them get redemption and forgiveness from all their sins. Because they REALLY need guidance, the Reverend's guidance.
I'm not even going to repeat what he said or what he did, but I loved how the Warriners dealt with him.And it actually made me laugh, but that may have been just me. I don't want to give any spoilers so I'm not saying anything else about the Reverend.
Now, about Cassie and Jamie relationship. I loved how they met and how they got more and more connected because of her storybook. Although in the blurb it was talking about him helping her out with the storybook, it still is something so amazing that I couldn't help but smile every time they were together.
Once again, Virginia gave me a romance book full of surprises, some sweet moments and a few laughs. That's really something I love about her books, the fact that her books grab my attention and just makes me feel like I'm part of that world.
So yes! Of course I do recommend this book. And my comment about the 1st books is true here "you may fall in love with the characters too". If you love Captain James Warriner in the 1st book and found him mysterious and wanted to know more about what was going on in his mind, you will love this book.
That been said, there is no doubt in my mind that this is a 5* read.

4.5 stars. This book was a fucking delight. I could not wipe the smile off my face reading this.
The hero and the heroine are both two precious cinnamon buns I want to smother with icing. They both have mega daddy issues and low self esteem and just can't figure out how much they both mutually love each other. Their bonding over writing and illustrating the book was so freakin' cute I could barely stand it.
The only criticism I could give is that their "she/he can't possibly love me" shtick went on a little long, but their hang ups were pretty understandable. The previous book had the same issue and it bothered me far less here.
I can't wait for the sequel.

This is a sweet romance. Watching them fall in love over the children's stories they are working on together was adorable, and even though they both have some dark secrets they are dealing with, there is a gentleness about the way they fall in love that lets you see how they would be together after they've dealt with their scars.
Also, I was totally imagining his drawings as David Small illustrations.

As the song goes … “Holding out for a Hero …” and along comes Captain James Warriner and all our wishes have been granted. Virginia Heath has created the most unpretentious hero I’ve ever read about and I was swooning over Captain James, Jamie, with every page. Captain James was a wounded soul, a young man of 27 not long since returning home after fighting in the Napoleanic war and then being held captive for months and during his escape he was shot several times leaving devastating injuries to his thigh. Through sheer arrogance and stubbornness Jamie managed to save his leg but he is left with scars, deformity and a painful limp. His physical scars have spread deep and his mind is left unsettled and the strong, courageous young man now fears of the dark and of his own sanity. He cannot see past his imperfections and feels he is completely useless to anyone. His only joy at the moment is his painting. His view of the beauty and wonder of nature kept him strong through a turbulent childhood and now he fills his days with artwork.
Cassandra Reeves is the daughter of the new parish vicar. Cassandra, Cassie, is a loner especially with the lifestyle of constantly moving due to her father’s job and his disposition. Cassie has been brought up by her father for many years since her mother fled the shackles of her controlling marriage. Sadly, Cassie is now left to cook, clean and obey her father and his beliefs. When Cassie can get away she loves nothing more that riding out in the countryside on her pretty pony called Orange Blossom and also her love of writing stories gives her escape to another world. On one of her rides this is when Cassie and Jamie meet under funny and embarrassing circumstances.
Since this unexpected acquaintance with Cassie Jamie has been fighting with his feelings. An instant attraction was felt but due to his self confidence in his imperfections Jamie makes a complete hash and his demeanour is quite obtuse. Cassie was also struggling with these new feelings from her brief encounter with the former soldier.
Can the young couples love of nature and creativity guide them though tough times that lay ahead? Can they each rescue each other from their own personal darkness?
I loved Jamie’s character and could sympathise with his self-doubts. This chivalrous man with toned physique wasn’t afraid of showing his gentler side but I think this combination of his personality traits was perfect for Cassie. With her own troubled upbringing and feeling very vulnerable Cassie needed a strong man to help her overcome her obstacles but Jamie’s tender side gently healed Cassie’s mental torment.
Virginia Heath’s wonderful wit wound beautifully throughout the storyline creating a gorgeous romance that made you smile, made your heart beat, made you sigh with pleasure but then the tempo of the story grew and you were left gripped with tension. Loved it! 5/5*

I had high hopes in the beginning for this one because Jamie was a wounded military man and I tend to like that trope. There's physical and emotional healing to write about. The heroine, too, had promise. Her father is the new local vicar and a stern fire and brimstone type. Jamie is afraid of the dark because of time spent in a French gaol and Cassie is afraid of being enclosed in a dark room because her father's punishments are to lock her in her room without light so they have demons in common.
Like the first book of the series, this one spent a lot of time inside the protagonist's heads. First there is the actual scene in which they each took part and interacted. Then one would regurgitate their analysis of what happened from their own point-of-view. Each one always thought the worst of the situation, lots of woe is me and I'm not worthy talk. Lots of negative self-talk. Too much negative self-talk. As the first in the series, the heroine was the more intrepid. She had a plan to escape her father. I also felt the attraction they had for each other was written by the author and stuck out.

The beauty which Virginia Heath writes with will leave any reader wholly satisfied. A Warriner to Rescue Her is tautly written, generously vivid, and captivatingly intense with a wry wit beneath a healthy dose of dramatic goodness. Nuanced, engaging characters soar off the pages with expressive grandeur and the compelling plot had me swooning throughout the romantic bits. James has such a fragile soul. Beneath his tough veneer is a man haunted by the ghosts of his past. But who better to turn his world inside out than the lovely reverend's daughter! The way James meets Cassandra Reeves is hilarious. I couldn't help but giggle. Their story is strong and compelling and I cheered for them from the beginning.

Villain alert! A Warriner to Rescue Her has one of the most disturbing villains I have seen in a long time. But more on that later.
It’s time for the hero with a limp to step forward. Yes, our hero has a limp, and he is hiding from the world. He grunts when he talks. He is surly. One day churlish-Jamie is riding through the Warriner’s apple orchard. He sees something. There appears to be some plump feminine legs dangling from a branch. Upon closer inspection, there seems to be pink garters decorating those lovely legs. He thinks that maybe he should investigate. He hears an agitated feminine voice coming from above him. Then he makes his first mistake, he asks if he can help. Jamie is about to have his hands full as he tries to rescue Cassandra aka Cassie Reeves from the tree. He tries to climb the tree. It does not work. They both fall, with Cassie sprawled all over Jamie’s manly chest. It is a case of lust at first sight.
The mirror trick. Cassie is one of those heroines who is pretty, but does not know it. She is an I-don’t-have-a-mirror-and-if-I-did-I-would-never-look heroine. Cassie is a vivacious, charming, bubbly woman, and Jamie just cannot resist her. I loved Cassie, even if she did not know how stunning she was.
When Jamie returns home after the “rescue,” he cannot forget the vibrant Cassie. Then Cassie shows up for a visit at the Warriners, but she is not alone. Her father, Reverend Reeves, has come to save the Warriners from their transgressions. Can I hear a hisssss? The Reverend Reeves is a hateful, bible-thumping, zealot preacher who has crushed Cassie’s bright light for years. He is the villain in this piece, and he is just loathsome. He spews all kinds of poison about the Warriners to his parish. He’s just awful. I was pleased with how the Warriners formed a strong unit to combat him. But, I was disappointed with the village peoples willingness to go along with him. Spoiler, he does not get his just desserts in this book.
When the Reeves’ show up, Jamie is shocked at the change he sees in Cassie. Gone is the vibrant woman who fell from the tree. Gone is the brilliance. She is now a shadow behind her overbearing father. Jamie cannot forget the woman he first encountered, he is intrigued, and he wants to help. But how? He is after all, a surly guy with a limp. What would he have to offer anyone?
Now it is time for my favorite part of the book, and the reason I am giving this one a high recommendation. Cassie has a plan to escape her father. She has secretly been writing fanciful books with a horse, Orange Blossom, who is the narrator. The stories that Orange Blossom tells are about her human’s misadventures. Of course, Cassie bases these misadventures on her own blunders. But they are more whimsical when told by a horse. Then Letty steps in. Remember Letty? She was the heroine from A Warriner to Protect Her. Well it seems that Letty is a bit of a matchmaker. Letty is amused by Cassie’s story called, Orange Blossom and the Great Apple Debacle. She thinks it would make a wonderful story for children. She suggests to Cassie that the book would be even better if it was illustrated. Guess who happens to be a wonderful artist? Go ahead; guess. Yep, Jamie. Jamie is an artist. However, Jamie’s father ridiculed his son’s talent. While Cassie is excited about the prospect of having her story illustrated, Jamie is hesitant. Eventually, they start working together. Cassie reads her stories to him, and he draws his impressions. They start meeting in secret, talking, laughing, writing, drawing and becoming friends. I found the Orange Blossom stories within the story to be wonderful. I really wanted there to be books with the funny stories and the vivid illustrations. Everything about these little books was magical. Oh, how I wish they were real. And, kudos Ms. Heath for some really magical writing. Loved Orange Blossom.
Overall, the relationship between Cassie and Jamie was terrific. We were allowed to see their relationship develop. As a couple, they worked well together. I loved James and Cassie as a couple and I loved the stories they created together. The brothers still had the great chemistry from the previous book. And, the Orange Blossom stories were a delight. This book gets a high recommendation from me.
It’s time for the hero with a limp to step forward. Yes, our hero has a limp, and he is hiding from the world. He grunts when he talks. He is surly. One day churlish-Jamie is riding through the Warriner’s apple orchard. He sees something. There appears to be some plump feminine legs dangling from a branch. Upon closer inspection, there seems to be pink garters decorating those lovely legs. He thinks that maybe he should investigate. He hears an agitated feminine voice coming from above him. Then he makes his first mistake, he asks if he can help. Jamie is about to have his hands full as he tries to rescue Cassandra aka Cassie Reeves from the tree. He tries to climb the tree. It does not work. They both fall, with Cassie sprawled all over Jamie’s manly chest. It is a case of lust at first sight.
The mirror trick. Cassie is one of those heroines who is pretty, but does not know it. She is an I-don’t-have-a-mirror-and-if-I-did-I-would-never-look heroine. Cassie is a vivacious, charming, bubbly woman, and Jamie just cannot resist her. I loved Cassie, even if she did not know how stunning she was.
When Jamie returns home after the “rescue,” he cannot forget the vibrant Cassie. Then Cassie shows up for a visit at the Warriners, but she is not alone. Her father, Reverend Reeves, has come to save the Warriners from their transgressions. Can I hear a hisssss? The Reverend Reeves is a hateful, bible-thumping, zealot preacher who has crushed Cassie’s bright light for years. He is the villain in this piece, and he is just loathsome. He spews all kinds of poison about the Warriners to his parish. He’s just awful. I was pleased with how the Warriners formed a strong unit to combat him. But, I was disappointed with the village peoples willingness to go along with him. Spoiler, he does not get his just desserts in this book.
When the Reeves’ show up, Jamie is shocked at the change he sees in Cassie. Gone is the vibrant woman who fell from the tree. Gone is the brilliance. She is now a shadow behind her overbearing father. Jamie cannot forget the woman he first encountered, he is intrigued, and he wants to help. But how? He is after all, a surly guy with a limp. I had written that the previous book, A Warriner to Protect Her, was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, how could A WARRINER TO RESCUE HER compete? Am I allowed to use the same superlative? It is as spectacular!
Cassandra “Cassie” Reeves is stuck in a tree while fetching apples for her pony Orange Blossom. Captain James Warriner hears her cries of distress. He rescues her in what is one of the most funny, sensual and delightful opening scenes I have ever read, and it only goes uphill from there! Jamie is an extraordinary character. A war veteran, he suffers acutely from the horrors he has experienced; one of his legs his badly damaged, he feels useless on the family farm; Jamie has despaired of ever finding love and having a normal life. Who would want such a broken man? He is handsome, strong as an ox, and also has a particular way of coping with his empty life. Cassie, she of the drab dresses and the naughty garters, is just as splendid a character. She has a sunny disposition, as opposed to Jamie who never manages to say what he means properly and lives in the dark of his mind. Cassie seems happy, but appearances are deceiving, as her father Reverend Reeves dictates almost every breath she takes. But she has a secret, well hidden from her bombastic, hypocritical, small-minded, and destructive father.
Both Jamie and Cassie are artists, I will not say more, but Virginia Heath’s eloquence knows no bounds as she describes paintings so vividly that I could see every colour and detail in my mind’s eye; incredible! Jamie and Cassie recognise each other as kindred souls, they understand each other, they help and comfort each other as best they can; they would love each other if only they could. I swear I was reading with my mouth open, I read way past my bedtime; I was utterly mesmerised. A WARRINER TO RESCUE HER is happy, whimsical, terrifying, horrifying, uplifting, and the romance is so delicate yet so powerful. Jamie and Cassie are extraordinary characters, entirely different in their behaviour, and yet so alike in many ways. It’s honestly impossible to convey how I felt reading this book; it is magic put into words. Reverend Reeves is so believable, I could picture him lecturing and spewing his hatred; he made my skin crawl; he is evil, and yet so real, it’s truly frightening.
Virginia Heath is a rare talent; her prose is phenomenal, beyond gorgeous; her vocabulary is stunning; the dialogues feel so genuine, I literally heard Cassie’s voice while reading, and her way with characters is unique: they are of such complexity, that they feel real. I honestly cannot find the words to convey how captivating, dazzling, astonishing A WARRINER TO RESCUE HER is; it has to be read to be believed. THE WILD WARRINERS is well on its way of becoming my favourite historical series of all time. Amazing!

The second Warriner book stayed with me longer than the first did. I really wanted it to go on so I could find out what happened next.
We meet Cassie, our heroine, when she's behaving in a totally inappropriate manner – climbing a tree – but it's written in such a way that I completely believed this young lady would act like this. I laughed out loud at their meeting, and the way he suffered for it.
In fact, there were quite a few laugh out loud moments, and some lump-in-throat ones, too. There was even a passage or two when the tension made me read noticeably faster, as I anticipated the pair getting caught out.
I loved the way Jamie put a supercilious clergyman in his place. It reminded me of my father, and the way he would not tolerate lack of respect. As a Christian, I was, of course, dismayed to see a clergyman behaving in such an un-Christian way in literature (again! Outside overtly Christian books, they are often portrayed as mad, bad or dangerous. It would be nice to have a few “normal” Christians to redress the balance. We're not all psychopaths.) However, I am realistic enough to know there are believers just like him, in fact, I've met them, and the over-pious Reverend came across as a very real person.
My biggest bugbear with this book is, we have to wait so long to hear about the other Warriner brothers. More please.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw. What I liked most about this was the lack of focus on sexual attraction. While it was there, the author draws attention to so many other things that pull the leads together, particularly their creative pursuits which added a much-needed, light-hearted touch. I felt like I could really picture Jamie's illustrations and I loved how much of a mark of pride they were to him despite his father's attempts to belittle him about it
I already loved Jamie from the first book in the series but I was so excited to learn more about him and his demons. Cassandra was such an unusual female lead but in a really fun, interesting way. Virginia Heath did such a good job of teasing out the depths of her trauma and I appreciated that the book doesn't end by saying that they're "cured" of their PTSD because they're in love now but instead implies that they're moving forward and working on their issues together from a place of safety and trust.
My main negative is that both this and Jack's books rely heavily on misunderstandings and the leads, but particularly the men, feeling unworthy.

Oh my another fabulous story from author Virginia Heath and another Warriner brother to love! This is the second book in The Wild Warriners series and is based on Captain James Warriner.
Jamie has returned from the war a broken man, physically and mentally. He has trouble sleeping and limps from a gunshot wound. His insecurities are at an all time low and feels no woman would want him broken as he is.
Cassandra (Cassie) Reeves is the only daughter of the newly appointed vicar, who happens to be a mean and vindictive man and a horrible father. Cassie has a bubbly, talkative personality or at least that's what we see on the outside. Within she is very insecure and doesn't believe herself good enough or pretty enough for the handsome Captain Warriner.
If ever two people deserved a happy ending it has to be Jamie and Cassie! What a fabulous couple that I instantly fell in love with. Two broken and insecure people who end up healing each other with their love for each other. Another perfect story from the pen of author Virginia Heath! I am absolutely loving these Warriner brothers and the lovely ladies they have fallen in love with!

I absolutely adored the first Wild Warriner book and the second one definitely doesn’t disappoint.
Captain Jamie Warriner - back from the Napoleonic wars - is surprised to find the new vicar's daughter half way up an apple trees one spring afternoon. He's even more surprised to find out he's fallen in love with her!
Jamie is proud and embarrassed by his war injuries and terrified by his past and Cassie is gorgeous and hilarious but embarrassed and terrified of her father. Can the two of them overcome their pasts and their fears to trust each other?
(On a side note I did so love the counter-romance between the horses - gorgeous touch!)
Virginia Heath writes with warmth and wit and heart and I cannot recommend this series enough. Very much looking forward to Dr Joe's story next year now.

I have to say that I truly loved this book. Heath builds an impressive complexity in her characters and slowly builds the heat of romance between them. This is the second book in the Wild Warriners series, and I can’t wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this book.

Reread this book. It is just as charming and funny as I remembered.
Cassie is vivacious and adventurous and Captain James Warriner fits into her hero role reluctantly and doubtfully because of his battle scars. Her children's stories that keep her sane and distracted from her strict father fit with the Captains illustrations making a lively unforgettable story (which is why I wanted to reread it.)
As they both explore their fears and their misconceptions of each other you root for them especially as the father becomes unhinged and dangerous.
Very satisfying HEA!
