Years ago he’d loved her, then one traumatic event made him walk away to forge ahead in a dangerous career that had him skimming the edge of being a killer. Now working for an elite security company, he’s never forgotten her, the echoes of Ella buried deep in his heart and memories, locked safely away.
Seeking revenge on those who’d betrayed her, the last thing Ella expected was to come face-to-face with the man who’d shattered her heart. But here Ryan was, determined to be her protector, and equally determined to once again be a part of her life…and her lover. But the echoes he’d left behind were both sweet and soul destroying.
Playing a dangerous game, getting information from a friend delving into the Dark Web, being an anonymous AFP informer to bring down an underage sex ring, she had no idea just how much everything was going to change.
For good or bad, the rules are altering, and every echo is becoming reality.
First half of the book is quite good but in second half it loses its grip. This book could have been so much more but ended pretty average. I like this author's writing style, though.
But this book Did something that always grinds my gears.....
h and H spend decades apart, apparently never truly forgetting each other. but of course the h is more sensitive and never sleeps with OM, while the H has scratched his 'itch' MANY times in the period.
what made this worse was tht the h wasn't even slightly disgusted to hear about how he stuck his penis just for the act, but on the other hand later says how she doesn't like that he killed someone to save her life...... like WTF!?!
like I said, NOT OKAY. she had this cool and unfazed demeanor which quickly disappeared after sex? i would've assumed with the personality she started with she would have scratched her itch with someone too!!!!!
double standard is all I see, if the roles were reversed, the h would be slut shamed practically and groveled more!
H barely even FUCKING paid for his disappearing act!!! he definitely did not grovel enough. smh
Am I a horrible person for thinking that Elle forgave Ryan far too easily? I keep envisioning Elle with bad ass vigilante spy persona and I keep getting disappointed because she just...gave in so quickly.
Ryan, I liked his grovel. Not the best grovel, but meh. Not my favorite Hero. Left Elle, never looked back and then years later hears her voice, sees her and automatically thinks "I want her again!". Had sex with OW during their separation. Was very pushy when he should have been more repentant. Meh.
Great premise. Less than stellar characters.
Liked it. Finished it. Just...*sigh* it could have been better.
I fell in love with Angela Verdenius' writing and the way to tell stories from the very first book I read from her. The stories are fun, emotional, filled with charming characters, the best of friends, curvy women, people who are like us, who are easy to relate to, and who are so appealing, who you want to cheer for, and love seeing them find the happily ever after. Her books are the ones that I go to when I hit a reading funk because I know I will fall in love with reading all over again through her stories. The Australian life and cultural vibes fascinate me, the cat lovers make me smile, there is a lot to smile and sigh about these stories, but they are not all just comedy and cheer, there is also deep emotions that touch my heart. And with Echos, there is also an intense darkness, danger, suspense, and action that just delighted me even more as a romantic suspense fan while the pain of the past history between Ella and Ryan just shattered my heart. I love Ella and Ryan, and the raw honesty between them, the connection, the understanding, the humble way Ryan owned up to his past mistakes, the forgiveness, and redemption, the sizzling chemistry, they were so immensely perfect for each other it was delightful to watch them find each other again, and reawaken the old feelings. Ryan's need to be in control, his commanding ways, and inner turmoil, it all just turned into this tender, loving, caring, protective, sweet man when Ella was around. Ella was way over her head with the secret revenge she was plotting with her friend, yet she was determined to find justice and to play her revenge on the secret club. This story was so engaging I stayed up until the early morning hours to read it. I loved the romance, and how Ella and Ryan worked the emotions and feelings between them from the past and the present. A lusciously delightful, alluringly intense, humorously entertaining, and so adorably sweet and heartwrenching, dark and dangerous, a story that captivated my mind, and made me not only sigh and swoon and smile but also tear up, and bite my nails in fright. ~ Five Spoons!
Once again Angela did it. Made the characters come to life. I love HEA books. I have read every book Angela has released on amazon. I love that her books all have curvy leading ladies and hot as sin alpha males. I recommend Echoes to everyone who has loved Angela's books. You won't be disappointed. I can't wait for the next book.
This has been again a very entertaining and very emotional read by Miss Angie. This time the book is a little bit darker. However I'm more into the lighter books (think Big Girls Lovin'). If I would be asked if I would read it again in the near future I would say no. Somehow I don't seem to click with the Wells Brothers and Echoes so far. Also - maybe because I inhale all of Miss Angies books - I seem to notice several repetitions like Aarons posture or the phrase "Ella mine" which is written 63 times, "echoes" or related 23 times. I'm however looking forward to the next story - 1-clicking it as soon it is available!
OH MY GOD! I have been a fan of Angela's work for a while now but this...this is is my favorite book she has ever written! I don't consider this dark. I consider this a freaking exciting, nail biting story that I couldn't put down. Okay, first take two innocent high school sweethearts, throw them into heartbreaking situations that - because one of them is dumb for a serif moment- end up separating. Now let me say this, I LOATH second chance romances. I really really do, the fact that they end up sleeping with other people when they are apart, hurts my HEA soul. Now that being said, I LOVE Ryan. This story had so much depth in it, and it shows how much Angela has grown since her first novels. I hope she continues stories like this. OHHHH and I REALLY REALLY hope for a Marietta and Raymond story.
There was SO MUCH angst potential! This hit on some of my favorite tropes, but from my selfish point of view (I like some really specific things in my romance books), none of them were used to their full potential. Technically this should go on the "traumatized heroine" shelf, but honestly, Ella doesn't seem to be very much impacted by her experiences, aside from just being "tougher." And, I put tougher in quotes because, while I loved her interactions with Snake & Co., she is such a doormat when it comes to Ryan!!! Basic interaction between the H/h:
h: "Please stop engaging in blatant violations of my autonomy as an individual."
H: "No."
h: "May I remind you that you emotionally devastated and abandoned me over a decade ago, and have done absolutely nothing to explain much less atone for that in any way? Please exit my personal space and home."
H: "No."
h: "Can I ask again that you respect my basic rights as a human being to make major decisions for myself?"
H: "...No."
h: "Ok." (swoons)
(Repeat a few more times.)
Don't get me wrong, I love Angela Verdenius. She is easily my favorite comtemporary/BBW romance author, no compare. For her books, I am willing to suspend my disbelief to such an extreme degree that I can accept a world where men like her Hs not only exist, but fall for women like (size 18) me. But, I want my alpha heroes to do better at showing their concern and protectiveness than by just trampling all over the heroine's wishes - that does not communicate love to me. In fact, that reminds me of some disturbing behavior patterns from my work in DV (and the heroine's lack of reaction to that aggressive behavior is part of why this book didn't end up on my "traumatized heroine" shelf).
I do acknowledge that I should probably have finished the Wells Brothers trilogy before jumping into this, but I just could not wait! A chubby, scarred, disabled, hurt & secretive heroine who works at an autoshop?? A hero who has betrayed the heroine and must make amends?? My ultimate weakness! I was so excited to watch Ryan have to GROVEL like a mofo to win Ella back and make up for his mistakes. And I have a lot of veterans in my life, many with PTSD, so the hero's journey also plays into a trope that I have a huge soft spot for. But I just can't help but feeling like I got cheated on some angst.
To be fair, I know that I personally infinitely prefer the story to be one of the heroine's healing, rather than the hero's (not that I don't love a tortured H!), and I am sure that has impacted my response to Echoes. I also personally prefer some insecurity in my heroines (to be soothed by the hero), and I feel like the story waffled on this a bit. There was some narration on Ella's part where she chastized herself for thinking Ryan might still have feelings for her and say it must just be about the information she has, but then later in the same chapter, she would completely, wholesale believe that he was 100% into her and back for good and the only concern is her ability to resist him; insecurity abolished!
One more caveat I will give for my less-than-normal enthusiasm for a Verdenius work: I am not really a fan of "black ops" romance books, or ones that have a strong message about trusting police to be saviors and saints. On the former, I feel like that trope is overplayed (along with young, model-gorgeous billionaire shifter Doms into MFM menage with plain/chubby women - waaaay outside my ability to suspend disbelief). On the latter, to be honest, I've had too many negative personal experiences to be able to buy into the idea.
Again, Angela is still on my auto-buy shelf, but I am learning more about what parts of her stories I love, and which are less my cup of tea - I think I was spoiled for a while because so many of her books dinged so many of my bells, that it took me a moment to suss out more nuanced reviews.
Speaking of, this is an exceptionally long review for a GR account that functions primarily as a to-read list, so I'm gonna save this and be done. Off to tackle the Wells Brothers! (If only that were literally!)
(3.5 stars)
p.s. Lots of sweet, romantic, hot sex!
p.p.s. BRING ON ROSE'S ROMANCE! (Also, I would enjoy a modern reformed-rake hero from Snake's motorcycle club!)
4.5 stars! It was thiiiiiis close to 5 stars. I just need. More. Drama!
I enjoyed the banters between Ryan and Ella, especially because Ella's such a determined lady. She stood her ground and sure, eventually she gave her heart, she busted Ryan's balls a little bit. It's more than enough for me. But I kind of hope to see more action and Ryan protection Ella because let's be honest, Ryan in action would be pretty yummy. :D
Raymond and Marietta! They need their own story ASAP and I hope Angela Verdenius give us amazing gift soon!! So yeah, overall classic Angela Verdenius with a good twist. Also, I can see a better writing and more feeling in this one. Good job! Look forward to finally read Blue!
Angela has another hit in my eyes. This book has it all, romance, suspense & lots of action. Ryan and Ella’s story is a little dark but what they were dealing with was dark. My heart melted when Ryan would say Ella mine. Can’t wait for the next one to be released.
