The Emrys Chronicles #2

Half-Emrys: The Two Masters

Rate this book
Choose the light or choose the darkness, but you cannot have both.

As a half-emrys, Einion can wield the powers of light and darkness in the mortal world. But having known only the light’s purity in the immortal realm, Einion fears the dark power that leads to corruption. Despairs over his heart increase his uncertainty, and Einion is thrust on a path where he must face his worst fears to save the one he truly loves.

Rhianu, a ruthless Dark Emrys, stumbles into Einion’s life only to be challenged by her versions of good and evil. Her heart is torn between power and love, between the past and the future. Familiar with betrayal, Rhianu must follow through with her master’s deceptive plan—no matter what the consequences or what her heart tells her.

Half-Emrys: The Two Masters, a romantic fantasy, is the second book in the The Emrys Chronicles. This novel may be enjoyed without reading Half-Emrys: Master of Lies (The Emrys Chronicles #1).

*Note: This book was previously published as The Two Masters (Chronicles of the Half-Emrys Book 2).

Romantic fantasy is for you if you like a light, character driven, more traditional fantasy plot, which includes two characters who find themselves drawn to each other, even if they start out as enemies. During a character's journey to develop powers and overcome trials, romance will ensue with bits of tension. The hero or heroine will undoubtedly be fighting some inner battle that makes them bulk at the chemistry with the other character until they slay their inner demons, save the world, and realize there is room in their heart to love.

Romantic fantasy might not be for you if you prefer paranormal fantasy or epic fantasy. Romantic fantasy doesn't have the usual tropes of vampires and werewolves. Usually romantic fantasy novels are set in a high fantasy world, and an ultimate goal, besides love, is sought. Love is just the icing to the cupcake.

Another great adventure in the Chronicles of the Half-Emrys series! I love how Rector explores the battle between light and dark within her characters. Her two main characters come from vastly different backgrounds, and yet they struggle with the same fight as well as with their love for one another. She kept me guessing until the end which way her characters would choose. I really enjoyed the story and I enjoyed the interaction with their dragons as well. It was good to see more background on all the characters. She had some really great descriptions in there too.
I look forward to the next book!

The magic and intrigue of Half-Emrys Chronicles continues in this second installment. We get a bit of backstory here on some of the chatacters from book one, which I love. This author has such imagination! The star fishers were my favorite, except for the dragons. I could listen to them all day. Love the dynaimc between traehearn and einion, and all their humor. Rhianu's struggle is something we all identify with. And the ending! What a cliff hanger.
If you are looking to escape reality, to be swept away, put down the Calgon and pick up this book.

Lisa Rector is a master at writing high fantasy. And when I say that I'm coming at it from the perspective of one who enjoys Tolkien, Lewis, and Paolini. Yes, even romance girls can read outside their preferred genre.

The Two Masters, with its battles, magic lore, and dragons, is really a deep soul searching journey. The characters are forced to examine the light and darkness within. The balance can be swung back and forth with their choices. And there is always a choice. There is adventure, heartbreak, romance, and struggle. I loved everyone of her characters and found them easy to relate to.
Ms. Rector is truly master of her world. Her world building is incredible. Her ability to convey emotion is done beautifully with apt description. Her pacing impeccable. Her grammar, near flawless.

If you enjoy high fantasy, you won't be disappointed.

At the end of her blurb she says it can be read as a stand alone book, and it can. But I would encourage you to read the other books. You wouldn't want to miss such great writing!

As a cross-genre reader, I probably choose fantasy least often because they're hard for me to get into. Not this one. The dynamics with Rhianu and her mother at the beginning of the story was instantly intriguing. I hate when people give away too much of a plot so I'll not go too far. This was an awesome read, with great pacing, and the writing was wonderful. I read book two having never read book one and it totally stands alone so no worries there. I never felt lost or as if I was reading too much backstory. This is a classic light vs. dark but done in the author's own way that isn't reflective of every other good vs. bad story that I've ever read or seen in a movie.

An intriguing cast of characters draws you into Rector's exciting realm of magic and dragons. Her unique story is fast-paced with plot twists that kept me turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning. Rhianu's challenge to control both the light and dark powers competing for her soul is a struggle every reader can relate to on a personal and spiritual level, which is one of the many reasons why I highly recommend Rector's Half-Emrys series. Entertaining AND thought-provoking--a real treasure in a world of 'fluff' novels. Five stars.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this second novel in the Half Emrys books. I loved that it focused on 2 different characters but of course still with connections to the first novel. I loved the struggle Rhianu and Einion both had with light vs. dark powers. Good story telling and more world building. I couldn't put the book down towards the end wanting to find out how it ended. I loved the focus on forgiveness.. of other, of ourselves and how powerful that can be in our lives. It really touched my heart and I love that in a book. Highly recommend this book.

Rector's second volume in the Half-Emrys series is even more powerful than the first. In 'The Two Masters' more of the background and history of the Emrys is revealed. Her characters in this book add another layer of depth to the balancing of the darkness and light. I love how she uses her narrative to beautifully illustrate the real struggle we all have with our own morality, and to show that ultimately love will save us all.

This isn't the kind of book I would normally read, but found it to be well written and well paced.
I haven't read book one in this series but didn't find that to be a hindrance in following the storyline.
I found the story to be engaging and the characters well rounded. If this genre interested you then I recommend that you grab hold of a copy!
I was provided a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Einion is one of my favorite characters. And I love his dragon Trahaearn. He's a bit immature, and sometimes he says some hilarious stuff. Love the whole bad-a$$ angle with Rhianu and how things unravel as she figures out what to do with her memory loss. I love the steamy moments between Rhianu and Einion.

I love this series! This story takes place when Ahnalyn’s son from the prior novel is grown up and about to become king. He runs into Rhianu, who has lost her memories. There’s a bunch of steam between Einion and Catrin and Einion and Rhianu. There’s betrayal and dragon hijinks. I love how everything turns out in the end!

I think this is my favorite in the trilogy. But, of course, it's a toss up with the other 2! I loved how different the world where Rhianu comes from is. She is striking and captures my full attention. Again, amazing chemistry with the characters. Highly recommended.
