Can love survive the bright lights of fame?

A popular DJ at the hottest station in Nashville, Charley Layton is doing what she’s always wanted to do: living in the heart of country music. Charley puts her career first and relationships second, but when a charismatic stranger in a black cowboy hat invites her back to his place, she decides to give herself one night of no-strings fun.

But Dylan Monroe isn’t a no-strings kind of guy. Charley is beautiful, brainy, and brassy as hell—the kind of girl he’s always wanted. When his record label books him an interview on Charley’s show, he’s determined to find out why he woke up alone, and when he can see her again.

With Dylan now the most eligible bachelor in country music, Charley doubts their fling stands a chance, but she’s willing to try. Dylan dreams of fame, but he also craves a life offstage with Charley. Can he convince her that both of their dreams are worth chasing, and that love is still possible, even in the spotlight?

Rising Star is book one in the brand new series, Shooting Stars, by Terri Osburn. I have only previously read one short story by Terri but I fell in love with it. Why I never read anything else is the big question here. I decided to jump in now because this is a new series and well, just look at the cover. I can’t say no to a man that looks like that in his Stetson. This book was amazing. It was everything, fun, sexy, the Hero was seriously swoony. Sometimes when I fall in love with a book right from the start, I wait for the feeling to fade, for the story to dim a little bit. But that never happened. I loved it more with every page. And that ending. I had to wipe my eyes. So after all this build up, let me tell you about it.

female DJ

Charley Layton is twenty-five years old and has only been in Nashville a few months. She came from a small town where she was a DJ for a radio station there but to work for a well known station in Nashville was her dream and now she was living it. She was the newbie but that was fine. She would gain everyone’s respect. This was all she’s ever wanted to do. She has made a pact with herself that relationships are a big NO! She has to concentrate on her career. She is an independent woman and she won’t give up her dreams for anyone.

Nashville

It’s her birthday so her roommate has taken her out for the night. You know that old cliché of the eyes that meet across the bar and sparks erupt? Well, that happened. She saw him at the end of the bar wearing that black Stetson and was struck speechless. She was off of relationships but that didn’t mean maybe she couldn’t give herself a birthday present of a one night stand with a very hot cowboy, right?!

cowboy

Dylan Monroe is a country music singer who is on the cusp of finally gaining some recognition. He had a chance once before and it fell apart. After years of struggling, now is his big chance. He has a single releasing and it’s only the beginning. When he saw the beautiful woman across the bar, he couldn’t look away. And when they talked, he was even more taken with her. When he held her in his arms in a dance, he didn’t want to let her go. And when they kissed, the world stopped spinning.

“His gut said there was something here. Something worth pursuing.”

man playing guitar with a woman

Clay Benedict is the owner of the brand new record company, Shooting Stars Records. He has put everything he owns into getting this company off the ground and currently, they have one artist, Dylan Monroe. Clay has secrets of his own, the reason he walked away from a very lucrative partnership with his life long friend.

“I’m here for a song, remember?”
“You are a song, Charley Layton.”

So starts Dylan and Charley’s relationship. Perhaps starting a brand new relationship at the same time that a musical career is just taking off isn’t the best timing. Dylan is so taken with Charley, though, that he is determined to make this work. Charley was so determined not to get involved but she just can’t resist Dylan. But what happens when Dylan is on the road and all those young groupies are throwing themselves at him? She hasn’t even known him long enough to be able to trust him.

“Do I seem like a damsel in distress to you?”
“Not in the least.”
“Then why are you always coming to my rescue?”
“Lucky, I guess.”
“Who’s lucky? Me or you?”
“Maybe we both are.”

guitar

This book! I loved every page. I am so in love with Dylan. He made me sigh, swoon, just melted me into a puddle. He was just that perfect. One thing that I really loved about this book was that there was so much more than just the relationship between Dylan and Charley. There is a whole story with Clay of Shooting Star Records. Charley’s roommate, Mattie was a character. Dylan’s roommate, Casey, had a bit of a story going on. So, there was a lot happening. Did I convince you yet? I hope so. I am so glad I finally jumped on the Terri Osburn bandwagon. I can’t wait for the next book in this series, Falling Star, which will feature a brand new star for Shooting Star Records, Chance Colburn.

I love music. I mean all music. Everything from Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline to Bad Religion and the Dropkick Murphys. I love Bluegrass, Folk, Rock, Pop. I love it all.

But I don't much like books about the industry. For me the music is a story on its own and I don't need to or want to look behind the veil. Calling a spade a spade, I find the "business of stardom" vacuous.

So I wasn't expecting to love this book. Hell, I was worried I wouldn't even like it.

I should not have worried.

Rising Star is perfect! It's everything I want in Contemporary Romance. Characters I love, a story that dragged me through the pages and an ending that came way too soon. This book goes right up there with my favorites. It's a book that just leaves you happy with an embarrassing stupid grin on your face.

Can two career driven individuals meet and not expect to fall in love? That’s what happens when singer/songwriter Dylan Monroe meets radio DJ Charley Clayton. Charley is finally doing her dream job being a DJ at the hottest country station in Nashville. Dylan is getting a second chance at getting his singing career started again and is counting on Shooting Stars agency getting him there. When they meet at a bar and they spend the evening together they never would have thought that they would find that special one to fall in love with. Both would say that the timing was bad but maybe this was meant to be. With each new day they realize they might have a chance at making this work if they have a little faith and trust in each other.

Rising Star is a fun and enjoyable story that I finished in no time. The characters were well developed and the witty dialogue was smart and funny. Charley is a strong and independent woman who wasn’t going to let anyone sidetrack her from her job. Relationships came second and she tried to stay away from Dylan but his charm kept her seeing him again and again. Dylan was the perfect hero and I fell in love with him. He didn’t come on too strong and got to know her and what she liked and really cared for her. All the characters were interesting and added more to the developing romance. The romance that developed between Dylan and Charley developed fast but had its sweet moments and some very sexy times.

I’m so glad I fell in love with the cover for Rising Star because it introduced me to a new author and her wonderful writing style. The story was engaging and the characters very likeable. The secondary characters that were introduced were just as dynamic as the main characters and I hope to see them later. I can’t wait to read more from Terri Osburn and the next book of the Shooting Stars series.

3 3/4" Rising Star! " Stars!!

A very sweet and charming story. And nice set up for a music/band series. Dylan was just practically perfect. All full of southern manners, sweetness, talent, witt and good looks. Charley was a sassy girl with big ambition and grit that I liked a lot. She had just a bit of QUICK/DRAMATIC reaction to their situation. It was a bit OTT with the speed she took action based on circumstantial evidence. The whole drama situation was kind of over done and unfortunately predictable. Thus, not quite 4 stars. But I still enjoyed this story quite a bit. It had a lot of Southern charm and it made me smile. I'm in for the next book in the series. Happy reading

Sexy. Sveglio. E seducente. Avrebbe potuto assuefarsi in fretta a quel ragazzo.

Sweet read

Sugary sweet read/listen. Started off slow but then picked up. No real action just done predictable drama. It was interesting to see some inner workings of the recording industry and the PR blitz.

I listened on the way to work. Kinda of a weird narrator at times. I think I will check out the second book.

Fans of the tv show Nashville are going to love this series! This is a great story of a singer songwriter working hard to make it in the music business. He's had one shot and blown it so now he can't let anything get in his way. Dylan Monroe has everything planned out. That is until he meets one of Nashville's up and coming DJ"s Charley Layton. Charley is smart, sassy, and beautiful. Everything he never knew he wanted. But now that he has her how can he keep her and kick start his career?? Terri Osburn did a great job with this one and you don't want to miss it. Definitely a recommended read.

This book totally stands alone and does not end on a cliffhanger. It contains both cursing and on-screen sex, so if those thing will cause you to leave a bad review, you should probably skip this one.

One of the things that Ms. Osburn does beautifully is to write male characters who are darn near perfect. They don't have to be swaggering “alphas” (a term that in the romance world seems to be synonymous with 'total a-hole') who order their women around and act like total jerks to be sexy, they're just really great guys who are confident and sexy while being unashamed to love. I adore that about her books and Dylan fit perfectly into that mold, being just a solid, good dude despite being a rising country star. He didn't put on airs or pretend to be some ridiculous 'alpha male' in order to look important, he was just a good guy who happened to also have a talent for singing and I loved that. Even when things went south with Charley, he loved her enough to figure out what was going on and to fight for her, which made me swoon. Charley was a strong, smart woman who was incredibly likable as a character. I found myself heavily invested in this story as I read it, just wanting these two to get their act together and find their happily ever after. The side characters in this one were really great. They added a lot to the story without overwhelming it – even though Matty made me want to grind my teeth more often than not. In the end she came through but for more than three quarters of the book I had no idea why Charley even talked to her.

Ms. Osburn's books are always written with humor and heart, and this story is no exception. I loved the banter between Dylan and Charley as they drove toward the Pharmacy, and the dozens of more subtle moments that made me chuckle while I was reading. This book also felt a little bit like a love letter to the city of Nashville.

If you enjoy a book set in the music scene that features two very likable characters who belong together, you should read this book. I hope that Ms. Osburn has plans to write stories about the other band members and even Matty, because I would happily read all of them.

I requested and was generously granted an ARC of this story via NetGalley and the publisher. I was under no obligation to write this review, I did so because this book is great.

Jodie's Review

I am a huge country music fan so I was so excited from the blurb to read this story! Bonus for me it was better than I expected. This is a fast paced, fun, make your face hurt smile book. This is a book that gives every romance reader exactly what we want, that take me away and make me forget life for a couple hours.

Dylan is an upcoming Nashville star that is getting his second chance at his dream and Charley is an upcoming radio DJ trying to make it in Nashville. I loved the mix for these two and how they are brought together. I loved the build up of the relationship but I am not going to lie it’s an easy story plot to read into and know where everything is headed. This isn’t a butterflies in your stomach or angst story line, it’s more hearts and flowers! For me as a reader I did get mad at Charley during one part but my anger passed just as quickly as it came. I am not going to lie though, I completely am in love with Dylan as a character. The way Terri wrote him is exactly what I dream ever country star is. Just go look at his smirk on the cover and tell me he is not melting things. FYI He is totally melting things! Oh and don’t worry there is also that character that you want to throat punch repeatedly in here so I shouldn’t really say it’s all hearts and flowers!! Actually, there are a ton of secondary characters that I want more from, especially, a certain character named Casey and the lucky damn hat!! I just need that whole story ** HINT, HINT ** However, I am totally ready for Chance to fall in my kindle, I mean a girl can never have too many country boys!!

This book was just okay. I felt like it needed more to hold my interest though which was an issue.

The book pretty much went as expected, with no major surprises.

Dylan saved Charley from her own birthday-night-out and she gave herself one night that the handsome cowboy as a present.
Charley came to Nashville for her career at the city's hottest station and can't be distracted by a relationship, so she's determined not to get involved, while Dylan is determined to make it work.

But Dylan is the most eligible bachelor in country music and when she finally gives them a try, he has to explain to her that they have to be a secret for a few months. But then a video of them kissing goes viral and while he wanted to show her they could have their careers and something special together, when on tour he seems to avoid her, right when she would have needed him the most.

I needed some time getting into this story but I instantly loved Dylan and Charley together. They have sparks flying, slip naturally into something serious and are simply awesome. I got her, when she thought he was too good. He's actually pretty perfect when he wasn't a fool. You can't not swoon over him, especially when he has his cute moments, like letting her friend, who didn't really care, know where she is.

Also this is much more than just a love story.
There's the story of Clay and his label Shooting Stars after his secret made it impossible for him to stay partner with his lifelong friend. I really liked him but his little story makes me seriously doubt him.
There's his roommate Casey, who also has a good little story of his own.

I didn't get all that Instagram drama. Like how could Dylan be such a fool and Casey even worse? With women all over them, it really irritated me. And not because it's such a cliche.
Why wouldn't Dylan check in regularly in the first place and be such a naive idiot, letting all that happen? It was explained but still feels stupid.

I did like the whole Mitch thing, which developed into representing the whole business. And Country is completely new to me but I was quickly sucked into this world and really enjoyed the story.

To be honest, even if I hadn't been a huge fan of Terri Osburn's, I would have bought this book for the cover art! But seriously, I love this book so much I finished it in a day! Dylan, the upcoming country music star, well represented by the sexy cowboy on the cover, and Charley, the up and coming DJ on a popular Nashville station, were both extremely likable characters. There was a very palpable attraction their first meeting, with a rapid progression in their relationship which Dylan believed in, but Charley had a hard time trusting. There was one particular manipulative person who was out to destroy her trust in him, as well as damning press on a road trip. I am so happy with how this turns around and can't wait to see who will be the "stars" of the next book in the series!

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is a very enjoyable book - and I am looking forward to more installments. Ms Osburn does a great job of introducing us to a new set of interesting people and the Nashville scene. There were plenty of side stories which could develop in the future, and a very satisfying core too.

This book does a really good job of getting us right into the music world, and unusually also brings in radio - which is of course an excellent complement, and gives Charley a good career to fit with Dylan's; win win. The fact that it is country music also tones down the expectations of crazy; although fans will be fans!

I don't know where Ms Osburn got her inspiration for Elvis, and especially his full name, but it was unexpectedly funny and throws naming rules out of the window! I am looking forward to finding out more about his little entanglement too.

Really a well crafted, sexy, fun and entertaining read, roll on book 2!

This was the first book that I read from the writer Terri Osburn and to my delight I liked it very much. When I read the blurb I was very curious about the story because I have read many ‘rockstar’ books but this was my first book about a country singer.

‘Rising star’ is a contemporary story that is writing very fluent and that is a light and easy read . The story is told in both POV’s.
If you’re looking for a story with a good guy in it, then you really have to read this one. Dylan Monroe is everything you could want in a guy. Good, gentle, intelligent, loyal but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t go for what he wants and he wants Charley with whole his heart. Charley is also a likeable character. She also knows what she wants, she wants to be a DJ. Both of them have a dream that they really want to become reality but both will find out that sometimes love can change your dreams a little bit. That sometimes love and trust can make your life and dreams better!

I really enjoyed ‘Rising star’ and I will definitely read the next book in this series.

When I first requested a copy of Rising Star from Netgalley, I have to admit, It was simply a cover request. Sexy man in a cowboy hat, I could not resist! And I'm glad that I have no control over my brain when it comes to sexy men in cowboy hats!

Rising Star is the story of a struggling musician/songwriter Dylan Monroe and a new radio D Jay Charley Layton.

A few years back Dylan had it all by the tips of his fingers until his all wasn't good enough. He was let go from his label and tossed aside. But no matter what Dylan kept fighting and a new label (Shooting Stars) eventually caught wind of him.

Charley Layton has always wanted to be a part of the country music world, but not being able to play an instrument or carry a tune in a bucket has made that dream difficult for her. At a young age she decided she would be a radio D Jay. Now she is the D Jay for one of the hottest country radio stations in Nashville TN.

When Dylan and Charley meet at a bar, sparks immediately fly and fate is set into motion.

I loved the aspect of this novel. Up and coming country music singer meets a young and fresh DJay. I have yet to read something like this when it comes to novels with a music aspect. I was intrigued and curious to see how this would go.

Rising Star was a cute as hell novel. I literally was over here swooning over Dylan Monroe. He's a man with a kind heart and a set of manners to go along with. He's sweet and endearing. He knows how to treat a woman. There is not a single asshole bone in this mans body, but don't let that deter you from reading. Dylan Monroe is also cocky but in a hilariously charming sense.

He and Charley vibe just right.

I really enjoyed this novel and I can't wait to read more from Terri Osburn and the Shooting Stars series!

I have been excited to see this series of Terri Osburn's start. I fell in love with her Anchor
Island Series and to this day I say it is my favorite series. Then Ardent Springs came along
and I did enjoy it and all the people from it but was not drawn into it like Anchor Island.
Terri always writes books that are full of humor and heart, and people that could be your
friends. Rising Star, the first in this new series is no different. It has the Alpha male
that is so likable, Terri doesn't write Alpha males that are mean or jerks, they are alphas
with heart, manners and full of love and they don't mind showing it. It also has the strong, sexy
and sassy heroine. I absolutely loved this first book.

Charley Layton is the local DJ in Nashville for Eagle 101.5, doing what she always wanted to
and loving it. She has decided to put relationships and men off. Concentrating on her career
only. But a night out at the Wildhorse Saloon and meeting Dylan Monroe might have her changing
her tune.

Dylan Monroe has this last chance to make a go of his music career. He needs to put all his time
and energy into his music. He has no time for relationships. One night he meets the smart
sexy and beautiful Charley Layton. Will she change his mind?

Dylan and Charley have such a wonderful chemistry through the entire book. They banter back
and forth, they joke and it makes them very likable. Their story is very likable. Yes they
have issues to deal with but it is not all this crazy over the top drama you find in so
many romance books today. It is a very funny, warm and lovable romance. I recommend this book
to everyone.

On a side note, I hope that further books bring us a story for Matty.

Country music tells stories from a real-world viewpoint where love and loss can go hand in hand. Being a fan of the genre, I hoped Rising Star would use its Music City setting to showcase a romance worthy of a Country ballad. Unfortunately the story is more like Pop music; enjoyable but with little heart behind the words.

In the south, Country radio is king and nowhere is that more apparent than in Nashville. Getting a mid-day DJ slot on the popular Eagle 101.5 is no small feat for small town girl Charlie Layton and she’s ready to show management that she’s the right fit for their station. Charlie loves her work and her co-workers; morning show host Ruby Barnett and the station’s bookkeeper Matty Jacobs have become her closest friends in town. Their plan to celebrate Charlie’s birthday mix a little business with pleasure as Ruby is scheduled to host an open mic night at the Wildhorse Saloon. From the safety of the bar, Charlie watches Ruby in action as she plays to the crowd and keeps them entertained before the live music starts. Being the center of attention has always made Charlie uncomfortable and live appearances like this are the only part of her job she dislikes. It’s a necessary evil, but one she’s happy to let Ruby handle whenever possible.

Charlie is also content to let Matty get most of the male attention. Blonde and petite, Matty is always the one receiving free drinks or invitations to go out on the dance floor. It’s no surprise then when the bartender walks up with a fresh drink for Matty, compliments of the man at the end of the bar. Charlie barely notices the guy but her eyes are drawn instantly to his companion. Tall, dark and wearing a black Stetson, he’s a picture perfect cowboy and the stuff of female fantasies. Not Charlie’s of course, since he’s probably on wingman duty and will only talk to her so his friend can introduce himself to Matty. As if prompted, the men walk over and Charlie finds herself paired off with Dylan Monroe as they watch his buddy crash and burn with Matty.

This was a fun one to read. I loved how Charley and Dylan met, but knew that Dylan keeping what he did a secret would cause problems. Dylan could have taken advantage of things, but he didn't, instead he showed Charley a good time with the low key things they did. It was fun to see their romance evolve, but I knew the issues that were coming, you could see it coming. It was interesting to watch Dylan get his eyes opened. I loved that even though Dylan didn't know what was going on with Charley, he went after her, letting her know that it was her he wanted. I loved how this one ended, loved the change the two of them made in their lives and how both of them seemed to find their dreams together.

I have been a fan of Ms. Osburn from the beginning of her writing career. This book to me is a departure from her previous works. Set in Nashville its a story of an upcoming artist named Dylan and a DJ called Charley. Though it is a departure from her previous novels it was an intriguing plot that i have not read before. Not only is the story up Dylan trying to make it in the music business we meet several secondary charcacters. We meet Casey(whose the drummer in Dylan's bad) who is nursing a breakup from his girlfriend. There is Clay who started his own music label and having Dylan being his only signed artist and being nervous how it would turn out. Matty Charley's roommate who is anti-man and is not too happy with Dylan being in Charley's life. As stated I loved seeing some of the happenings that goes to make a singer a star. I loved the steady built of the story and the characters and how it played. A great addition to Ms. Osburn's work.

Four and a half *Country Music* Stars! I liked this book. I didn't love it. It took me awhile to read due to meds giving me fits. Everytime is lay down to read I'd fall asleep. There were times when I was reading and could've sworn I'd read it before. But the deeper I got the better it got. It had its slow moments but wasn't bad. If your a country girl like myself or a country music fan. I'd recommend this book. I got my romance steamy at times. I also got my HEA. And a little look into their future. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!!

Love the chemistry between country star, Dylan Monroe, and radio personality, Charley Layton. Dylan is a really good guy which prevents him from seeing just how sleazy his manager is. The things Dylan's manager did to destroy Charley's and Dylan's relationship should have landed him in jail. Charley is a strong, independent woman who doesn't put up with anyone's bad behavior and Dylan really respects that. Elvis and Charley's grandfather are hilarious. Really cute story!

Charley was pretty much a nitwit and you'll know when at the moment you read it.

Honest review

Loved how each character’s personality just jumped off the page and dragged you into the story. Keeps you reading and on the edge of your seat.

Rising Star brings together up and coming Dylan Monroe, a country western singer and Nashville's hottest DJ, Charley Layton when they meet on her birthday at a night club in Nashville. I loved the chemistry that started the first night and just kept getting hotter and hotter.

Dylan still had his tours and commitments that kept them apart and a manager with a problem working hard to get rid of not just Charley but his long-time band brothers too. The happy ending with a wedding, a perfect cake and then an awards ceremony set this hot couple up for a lifetime happy ending. Every girl needs a best friend like Elvis and all the other friends that helped Dylan and Charley to their happy ending.

I want to thank Terri Osburn, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for the Kindle copy of Rising Star that I won in the Giveaway.
