Yngvar, son of a powerful Norman jarl, thought raiding a glorious profession. He dreamed of the Viking ideal, sailing to distant shores and battling honorable foes. Laden with gold, he would return home in glory. The same life of adventure that his grandfather, Ulfrik Ormsson, experienced awaited him.
It proved a false dream.
Along with his cousin and best friend, Yngvar discovers a world unlike the sagas of the great heroes. He encounters murder and treachery. Raiding is nothing more than merciless theft. True riches remain elusive and sea kings dominate the waves.
Yngvar trusts to his honor and courage to carry him. Yet powerful enemies swarm all around him. Fate guides him into the teeth of a clash between two of history's mightiest jarls. He will require all his cunning and daring to survive.
So begins a new saga of Viking adventure and war. Join the shield wall once more and witness the fierce history of the Norsemen.
Don’t know how I haven’t heard of this author. Glad I discovered him. So glad in fact, I purchased the rest of the series. It’s a rather long series. So, I suppose that says something.
A band of three immature young men, desperately seeking adventure and glory, attempt to recreate the heroics of their Viking forebears. However, they soon find themselves acting as pirates, preying on poor fishermen and defenceless peasants. Not the best start towards Viking glory. However, after a number of adventures, they redeem themselves and defeat their enemies in bloody battle. An eventual trip to Valhalla now assured.
This is the perfect Viking novel. Until today Autieri was my second favorite Viking novelist but now he has squeaked into to the number one spot. Sorry Thorgrim Night Wolf.
Ulfric Ormsson was the badass Viking hero of Autieri's last series and boy did I love him. DESCENDANTS OF THE WOLF follow a couple of his grandsons as they attempt to follow in the footsteps of their family granddad. And do they ever.
This book is perfect and hits all the Viking high notes without breaking a sweat. If you love Viking fiction and have read all of Ulfric Ormsson's step right up. But that you need to read Ulfric to love this novel. Ulfric is just too awesome to not read.
This first installment of the Descendants Saga was the epitome of a Norse adventure story. Although the majority of the characters are shallow in nature, their interactions between one another make up for that. The novel is quick paced and there is quite a bit of action from start to finish, which made it an easy and enjoyable read.
Yngvar is the son of a Jarl, noble born. Yngvar wishes to have the life his grandfather and father had, one of raiding and fighting. Suddenly to calm his wild needs, Yngvar's father betroths him to the ugly daughter of another lord. Yngvar makes a plan with his cousin and best friend to escape this betrothal and go on an adventure of their dreams.
Yngvar quickly realizes that raiding is not what he imagined; killing innocents, mutiny and capture all all befall Yngvar and his fellow crew. He is now forced to rebel against the former king of Norway, Erik Blood-Axe, and make it out alive.
The comradery that Autieri creates is something to admire in this novel. The 3 main characters of the story remain devoted to each other and supportive of each other's strengths. The trials and tribulations of the adventure never dampen the spirits of the crew and they persevere. This is a real manly men's story, typical of Norse history, very enjoyable.
Having finished Ulfrik Ormsson’s Saga, I was not yet ready to stop reading the family’s tale. Luckily, Jerry Autieri provided the perfect follow on.
The young Yngvar is a good antidote with his fleeting intelligence and occasional bravado. Women are in his future and I hope he quickly realizes they are the best of life, and occasionally cause the most trying of times.
I think he will find out the “square daughter-hag” will turn out to be a diamond in the rough.
The story line doesn't make sense and the characters are not well thought out .the author in opinion lack in detail on numerous occasions ,but the story falls apart as ridiculous situations that get the main characters to go raiding and away from home.a complete waste of my money !!!
This first book in the series that follows after the Ulfick Ormsson series is very well done. I found it reads more like a movie than the books in the other series. Fast paced with lots of action. If the remainder of the series are as well written then I will surely have some enjoyable reading ahead of me.
Great read with plenty of action, cunning and adventure. If your a fan of historical fiction this will get your fix, it's a well crafted tale and I'm looking forward to the next book!
A well written book like everything this author does, but whatever happend to our idea of the bloodthirsty berserker leaving a trail of devestation behind ?? I have never read of such a wimp as the lead character, in real life he wouldnt last a week. I just hope he grows a pair in the next book.
I am a reader who reads for enjoyment...i don’t care about how characters are devolved etc. etc...a book has to capture my interest & that is what this book did...it was full of adventure & i seriously would be happy to run off with any of the three main characters.
The beginning was a little slow. After a couple chapters I was hooked and it was very well written and smooth the history was great the action was awesome and I’m going to continue reading more of his books.
