Blake Pierce’s ongoing Avery Black series keeps getting better, taking the reader on many an adventure while being faced with unique serial killers. While Avery is trying to work on strengthening her relationship with her daughter, Rose, there is the looming realisation that her partner is also becoming her boyfriend. Dan Ramirez is quite the catch, though the fact that he and Avery spend so much time together is both a blessing and a curse. When they are called to the scene of a charred body, both Avery and Ramirez are baffled about what lays before them. A body, so charred and yet the bones seem almost pristine, leaves little doubt that they have a killer who thinks outside the box. Could this be the work of an arsonist or even someone with experience working in high-heat environments? With little to go on with the body, the Homicide Squad is baffled about what sort of killer they might be hunting, and what type of victim is being targeted. With the case heating up—pun intended—there has to be a pitfall, which comes in the form of another strain between Avery and Rose. While the local resources seem almost exhausted, the FBI enters the fray and this creates quite the turf war. In the middle of it all is Detective Avery Black, whose passion for solving the case supersedes all else. Will yet another kill end up in the hands of the Boston PD, or might the leads in this case go up in smoke? Pierce offers yet another great mystery that keeps readers speeding through the narrative to get to the climactic ending. Recommended for series fans, as well as the reader who likes fast-paced mysteries.

Just as things get intense with the series, Blake Pierce tosses a curveball and pulls the reader in yet again. Avery Black’s personal growth seems to spin out of control, depend on the relationship she is trying to foster. Her start-stop with Rose is an ongoing theme that will keep the reader entertained, though there has to be some clarity after the countless jolts to their already fractured connection. Meanwhile, Avery is working to find out just how she feels about Dan Ramirez, though she worries about getting too close, particularly since they work shoulder to shoulder. These struggles, as well as some emotional struggles all her own keep Avery busy throughout this case. When wearing her detective cap, Avery Black cannot be stopped, keen to find the killer and set things straight once and for all. The reader will see the passion she has for her work, which continues to strain the personal relationships she wants so badly to build. Others surrounding Black are able to support her throughout this piece, particularly Dan Ramirez. He is again prominent in the book, becoming closer to Black as they explore the personal side to their partnership. The story proved to be strong and held my attention, offering a unique killer who is no match for Avery Black, though there is again some guidance in the form of a past acquaintance of Avery’s to guide her along the path. The mix of shorter and more developed chapters proves helpful to guide the reader as they rush to get deeper into the narrative. Turning to new and exciting ways to kill, Pierce has lined up yet another curious killer who lurks on the streets of Boston.

Kudos, Mr. Pierce, for leaving me wanting more. I am eager to see what else Avery Black will find in the coming novels.

As typical with Blake Pierce books, there’s no clue as to the villain. So, as a reader, it’s hard to to Get invested in the story. Each one ends in basically the same way, the heroine, in this case Avery Black, in a life or death situation with the killer. I’ve read some of each Blake Pierce series. Change the names, change the settings, and you have the same story, just told in a different way. I’m moving on to a different author, hopefully, one who has more imagination and is not making Money telling the same story again

This is my second (reading along with my wife) and I will pass on any others. The "unsub" and the victims are given such shallow treatment I cannot become interested in their role. The poor Avery, she is resented by peers and supervisors shtick has become more than stale. Having so heroically survived attacks to solve the cases - in real life would give one respite from the dislike of fellow officers. Anyone who can be so devoted to her job that she can in an instant (never mind 5 minutes) forget about her daughter or lover and turn to "the crime file" is not a real person to care about. Sound character development is crucial for any novel and it is non existent in these comic book mysteries.

This is still entertaining, but Avery Black and this series aren't growing on me as I thought that they would. There are enough similarities between Avery Black and Riley Paige that this series feels the same, but not as compelling. In just two books, I've already gotten frustrated with Avery and her inability to put anyone or anything else ahead of herself. I'm not that into her relationship with Ramirez, who seems too good for her, yet for some reason keeps coming back for more of Avery's hot-cold bullshit.

This is a newer series from Blake Pierce and the new detective is Avery Black and she is a total a badass. She has put her career ahead of everything. Her marriage and her child. She was a high powered lawyer who got criminals off even though she thought they might be guilty. For Avery it was about the win. She got a serial killer off who later went out and killed another young college student to prove to Avery she got a known killer off so he could go out and kill again to show her that she was such a badass lawyer she could get a guilty man go free. That destroyed her career and it destroyed the person she thought she was. It also destroyed her family except she had blown up her family all by herself and that had happened long before the Howard Randal case.

Now Avery is a detective and she is going after a case where the bodies are burned to the point of no recognition. This killer is trying to wipe away something he sees in these women he is burning them so they can't be recognized.

Another book/series I think all mystery book readers should pick up.

I have been enjoying this series so far! I have noticed several typing errors and or grammatical errors as I get into each book. The story lines are great with amazing character development. I will say the only down fall is that the first 3 books, the same thing happens with Avery. Different killers of course. But she always gets kicked from the case, then works alone, then gets back on the case, etc. I hope books 4-6 are a little different so I don’t become bored, but overall have been enjoying these.

this book was much better than the 1st. only problem I have is how a very acts towards Ramirez. It's annoying and reminds me of middle school games. again the story and the crime is well thought out and good. enjoyed it

I keep trying to like this series as much as I do the others by this author, but I’m so very tired of poor Avery, always struggling to balance her job and her relationships. Good grief, her daughter is in college for goodness sake...it’s beyond pathetic. And either get with Ramirez or don’t but quit with the ridiculous “I’m so confused” moments. The story gets totally lost on all the drama.

While I liked the story by the time I finished the book, it feels like Avery character is not growing but rather stuck at the same place where she was when we were first introduced to her. There's a lot of background information missing and while we read a lot of ramirez and rose, we really don't know them. At some point the author made it seem that it was connelly who Avery was chemistry with, and then it was left aside.

While I appreciate the investigation on the murders, the main characters are like an afterthought, and we barely learn anything about them and cycles keep repeating from book to book, with nothing new to add to them.

However,a killer is burning women's's bodies
Ramirez Avery's partner are on an exciting search for this diabolical killer.
But,Avery Black's daughter Rosie has a continue "missing mom dialogue"
It is Avery's insight that finds the reasons.the clues that leads to satisfying solutions.

Love, Love, Love This Author

Blake Pierce's books are fantastic. They grab you from the opening lines and keep you reading until the end. Avery Black is an outstanding detective and main character.......I feel like I know her and would like to meet her to talk over a cup of coffee. The way she gets into the minds of the criminals is amazing. The storylines Blake Pierce writes are fast paced, hard gripping and thrilling. He has moved to my list of favorite authors!

Fiercely intense read!

‘Cause to Hide,’ was a horrifically gripping read!

Detective Avery Black finds her life, once again, taking a backseat to hunting down another serial killer. It is a suspenseful, jarring, and even dangerous case involving an killer who may be an arsonist. Avery and Ramirez are also trying desperately to navigate their way through their partnership and the budding me relationship.

I have a like/hate relationship for Avery right now. There are times when she is just a bit much for me. However, she is still a Bad-A. Her relationships with Ramirez and Rose are somewhat moving along. Avery's way of breaking the rules for the good of justice is still somewhat of a concern in my eyes but at least it's getting fabulous results. Either way, I enjoyed this book.

Boston Police Detective Avery Black is trying to improve her relationship with her grown daughter as well as juggle a relationship with a fellow detective. Then, she is assigned to investigate the death of a woman who was apparently burned to death. The characterization of Avery Black is not as strong as it should be. The solution to the crime is lacking something.

These books are incredibly addictive and as you can see from my reading list, I am reading them at the rate of knots. I have been devouring this series and every other series this author has written. What I will note, is that the books seem to be getting shorter at the same price point and the editing leaves a lot to be desired. However, the stories just bring me back for more and more and more.

The same story line, same mishaps, similar thrill. While I love the imagination and the research done by the author behind a story, what I don’t like with this series a monotonous pattern being followed in the story. Just like some movie, it begins with all goody goody things, with all the mess in between and everything turning to good/better in the end.

Avery keeps on taking the worst cases and getting into trouble with her superiors and, in this story, with the bad guys. Her involvement with Ramirez is also confusing their partnership at work, and her relationship with her daughter keeps on being convoluted. Good story and good entertainment for a few hours.

This one shined the light on arson/cremation/ashes. Avery had a VERY close call w/flames while getting the killer. Glad to see her relationships w/Rose and Rameriz are developing. I can't see her as a Sgt b/c she won't be out in the field. Sucked me in enough to sign up for book #4.

Worse than the Kate wise series. Bad writing. Bad drama. Totally formulaic.
