About the author

Jo Nesbø is a bestselling Norwegian author and musician. He was born in Oslo and grew up in Molde. Nesbø graduated from the Norwegian School of Economics with a degree in economics. Nesbø is primarily famous for his crime novels about Detective Harry Hole, but he is also the main vocals and songwriter for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre. In 2007 Nesbø also released his first children's book, Doktor Proktors Prompepulver.

For years I have put Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series on my “to-read list,” so, this summer I buckled down and read all 11 back to back. I don’t regret it. In fact, hearing about Oslo in February put July in Florida in perspective. Enough about background and on to The Thirst. What I didn’t like: I thought this would be about the dangers of social media but half way through it seemed that was dropped for an older, over done in my opinion, sort of killer. What I loved: all the characters and their increasing development. Nesbo convinces you to like even the scum of Oslo police because he weaves such an intricate and absorbing tale. I was left with the feeling that this might be a transition step in the series, as in the next will bring big changes, but that didn’t reduce my liking of the book. Last point, this is probably one of a couple more that might work as a standalone.

Few authors are sufficiently talented 0r brave enough to create a main character that is over the top compelling and thoroughly unappealing. Yet that is precisely what Nordic writer Jo Nesbo has done with his alcoholic, demon possessed, sometimes suicidal Oslo police detective Harry Hole. Don't believe me? Nesbo is the recipient of the Glass Key for the best Nordic crime novel and his books have sold thirty-three million copies in fifty languages. Basing my opinion on his Police (2013) and now with the 11th installment in his crime series, The Thirst, this author shows no sign of slowing down.

Now we find a sober and content (for him) Harry is a lecturer at Police College. Formerly sleep deprived and angst ridden he now awakens happy, married for three years to the love of his life, Rakel. It's a state of bliss unfamiliar to him. He promises Rakel that their uncomplicated life will always be so, but knowing Harry and Nesbo that was not to be.

There is a serial killer on the loose and his MO matches that of the one killer he was unable to stop. The murderer cuts the throats of his victims very much like a vampire would. The first victim was a lawyer a woman in her mid-thirties who specialized in rape cases. Her neck was covered with puncture marks - the wounds had tiny fragments of rust and paint in them. She had been a dedicated Tinder follower. The investigating team is stumped. Then a mere two days later there is another murder, a woman of the same age who suffered the same same puncture marks. She, too, was a Tinder follower.

Nearing desperation the chief of police turns to the best murder detective ha has ever known, but Harry is no longer on the force. He has promised the woman he loves and himself that he will not be involved with the police force again. He well knows the risks involved if he does. but Harry also believes that the murderer is the one killer who once got away.

John Lee delivers an outstanding reading of this can't-stop-listening-to tale.

Of course Harry Hole didn't die in his last novel or even if he had he may have miraculously come back to life anyway. For Gods sake man settle down with Rakel & just live happily ever after. Of course not , don't be a fool. There will always have to be another case, more disasters & brutal serial killers that only Harry can deal with. I know these books are so far fetched & I would have thought that Nesbo would have run out of ideas by now, In some ways I think he has but yet it is just great spending time with Harry. I'm not sure how many of his original side kicks are still alive although of course the hideous Mikael Bellman is still around & Truls Berntsen who becomes almost human in this book (as I say far fetched). So are there any new twists, has the plot changed. Possibly not but who cares. Scandanavian crime thrillers are just tremendous fun & Harry Hole like Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander are tremendous creations. Picked up a Wallander novel in the pub last night. Will he be as riveting I wonder. I hope so. Was Harry alive at the end of this novel. I'm not sure but I still think he will be back. Rakel come & live with me. I really could look after you!!!!!

Harry Hole, the sometimes recovering Norwegian police detective, is now working as a teacher at a police college. When it appears that a serial killer is stalking women who he has found on Tinder, Harry is asked to participate as a parallel investigator. The criminal appears to be a “vampire”, one who enjoys tasting the blood of the victims. Harry assembles his team and works alongside the police team but side stories abound. Harry’s wife develops a strange malady which sidetracks Harry. There are political intrigues among the team and with the administration and the ever present struggle with the press becomes an issue. Amazingly all the pieces meld together to make a taut drama with multiple twists and turns and a sequel likely.

Harry Hole is brought back onto a case yet again by his enemy, Bellman, who is about to be appointed justice minister. A modern day vampire is cruising Oslo, using Tinder to find his victims. Harry soon figures out who is doing it, but things are not adding up. A would-be academic who specializes in vampirism offers his help, and the boiler room is set up again. There are twists galore, and one of the hanging threads from two books ago is very nicely tied up. Bad cops, scary doctors, and the redeeming love he has found with Rakael. And a secondary villain just out of prison, who is going to show up yet again.

This is the first Jo Nesbo Harry Hole book I have read and will be the last. I feel the author relies on sensationalism with his description of all the brutal methods of torture. I am more hooked by the story and do not need that many explicit details. In fact, these details were distasteful and distracting and I did not appreciate having to read them. IMO, Harry Hole will never compare to Inspector Morse, Harry Bosch, or Sebastian Bergman. Those authors rely on excellent story lines to captivate the reader and a good story does not need anything else.

I generally love the Harry Hole books, but I found this latest offering slightly disappointing. Whilst there were the usual red herrings, I guessed the "baddie" fairly early on and the book lacked tension. I found myself wishing the author would just get on with it - it could have been a shorter and more effective outing.

Certainly not the best Harry Hole novel - the plot moved along mechanically in what felt like an inevitable way: formulaic. Perhaps it's that on book 11, the Harry Hole formula no longer excites me - we shall see because I'm sure as shit still going to read the next one.

Meanwhile back in Oslo.... Harry Hole is older more mature fighting his same demons. While the story felt a little predictable, Harry's Sherlock Holmes moment seems a shift for the series. It will be interesting to see where the next one takes us.

It’s impossible to read Jo Nesbo if you have a music streaming service. He makes so many references to obscure or forgotten music that it’s too easy to get dragged down a musical rabbit hole. But well worth it!

His books are dark but good fun.

I have always enjoyed the harry Hole books and this one is no different. It is gripping from the first page and makes you want to continue to read. It is in the same style as the other books but that is what makes it a great read. Recommended.

Very slick writing. One racial slur, which might need a warning, however it did fit with the character who used it. That said, the spare language and vivid descriptions have made me want to read more Norse crime thrillers. Or move to Norway. I haven’t decided yet.

Harry Hole is called to investigate a bizarre gruesome murder. He nearly falls back into alcoholism when he realizes the killer is an old nemesis. Gory, complicated but a good read.
