This is a review for the first 5 volumes, which is 50% of this series. I will try to keep it as spoiler-free as I can, but I do want to discuss stuff that happened in this manga.
So like with everything, the series starts off pretty normal. Well, as normal as you can get it when you are in a juvenile prison. :| But well, you get my drift. Then suddenly something happens, and poop really hits the fan. Our main group quickly finds out what happened and try to stop people from doing stupid things (like opening windows when someone is knocking on it, and we can clearly see they are zombies). Of course, this is a zombie apocalypse so people aren't always the smartest cookies, so you can imagine what happens.
And it isn't safe outside the gates either, with dead roaming everywhere. Pushing up against the giant gate (poor guys who got eaten when they opened it). Our guys also find that out when they decide to check out the MC's family (who is apparently not living that far away).
The series goes from creepy, to creepier, to wtf, NOPE. >.<
Really, if you thought flesh-eating zombies is bad, or even prisoners who get a bit ticked off at every slight little thing, well imagine now a guy (they call him the Bokor) who can control the monsters. Who can make sure that they will make a big giant bridge of dead and zombies. Who is sitting on top of them like a freaking king. :| Yeah, have fun escaping that. Did I mention that he can regenerate? Heal? Or that he has super-sonic screaming powers that will not only speed up the zombies and make them freaking ninjas, but also will shatter your eardrums? Isn't that lovely? Yeah, I know, nope, nope and triple nope.
Of course there is also a fair share of human stupidity (as is common in zombie apocalypse). Like the guy who keeps his dead kid in the hopes he can be healed from being a zombie. Or the guys who think it is a good idea to just go into a jail and do crap to someone who is clearly not a good person.
And then when you think, yay, a girl (because you won't see one (at least not alive)), you find out certain stuff about her and then you would rather have her not in the manga. She belongs to something that we see often in zombie apocalypses. You always have people like that in zombie movies/books/manga. Maybe you guys already know what is up.
We have 4 characters, but one true MC. I did like all the characters, though at times they were a bit too creepy, or violent for me. We also do find out a lot about them. I loved that the writer did this, as it gives more depth to the guys and you will definitely root for them. I felt so sorry for Maeda, and how he got put in the jail. :( But I guess we will find out why he got put there (there are hints, and I have my suspicions on why no one is believing him).
The zombies are terrifying, the mangaka truly is able to draw a horrific monster. The zombie parts (people getting eaten, or zombies getting up and close and personal) were creepy as hell. Really. There is also a lot of gore, so be warned about that. If you can't handle chopsticks inserted into eyes, or zombies heads getting ripped off, or other gruesome things, then don't read this one. My stomach was already not approving much of all of this at times.
All in all, I did think this manga is pretty great. I was looking for a creepy zombie manga, and not a cutesy, moe moe manga, and I found it. It is too bad that there are only 5 volumes left, and that they are all out. But then again, that is also a blessing as I can just read on and find out what happens to the characters, and if the world will get better.
I would recommend it if you need a creepy manga with lots of zombies. It is after all the right season for it, with Halloween right around the corner.
--- Fortress of Apocalypse 1-10 --- Plot: Zombie plot + nakama power + twist yang mudah diterawang ^^ Penokohan: Semuanya likeable kok. Gaya gambar: Ok!
Baca sinopsisnya langsung ya^^. Baru-baru ini saya selesai menonton Shaun and the Dead (iya, saya tahu ini telat banget, tapi tak apa kan?).
Tapi tenang saja, dengan THE POWER OF NAKAMA-- semuanya akan baik-baik saja.
Tapi yah saya senang sih.
Akhirnya baca buku lagi setelah seminggu terakhir fokus UTBK sampe bener-bener gak kepikiran buat baca buku a.k.a menuntaskan TBR bulan ini, hahaha. And here I am akhirnya ada mood lagi untuk baca.
But so sorry menurutku ceritanya masih sedikit "kurang".
It is like your typical zombie apocalypse manga with a group of survivors against the undead, but then there is a naked man sitting on a mountain of zombies? well, that's kinda absurd.
This is my review for volumes 1-10, I ended up binging them all because I. Could. Not. Stop. But to be honest, there's nothing incredibly unique about the story, it's your typical world-ending virus spread through a bite, except this time there's some necromancy involved. And the main characters aren't your typical sad amateur bros with no experience, these guys were all admitted into a correctional facility, essentially juvie, when the spread happened, which made the story all the more interesting given how unpredictable most of the guys were. (And man, all their backstories were seriously sad.)
The pacing of the manga was good, enough that I kept wanting to turn the pages to find out what would happen next. And the variations of the infected were fascinating, wanting to see more kept me on my toes. The only bit in the story that I didn't particularly enjoy or found enhanced the story was the cult arc, it was only really in the latter part of that arc that was relevant to the progression of the plot; it was also the only arc wherein we saw a woman, which was refreshing. There was no bumbling teen romance or girls with endowed busts you'd normally find in survival shounen manga; the focus was really on Maeda (the main character) and his friends (the bromance was real with this one).
I was surprised at how poignant some scenes were, and while they didn't make me cry, I was impressed that there was a depth to the story I hadn't expected, especially at the latter part of the series. I was also very satisfied with the ending, it wasn't perfect or completely happy but it was hopeful, and that's all we can really ask for.
I think this manga has potential. I'm not the biggest fan of the art style though. While it wasn't bad, it was sometimes hard to see what was going on. I'm also not really the biggest fan of zombies in general, because I don't really like how they operate. I don't like how a zombie will be eating a person, and then will just go and randomly attack another. Why do they do that? Why do they just run around killing everything. That isn't sustainable. Just finish your human and don't worry about all the other people running around. Why must zombies be so wasteful??? Is it supposed to be social commentary on how humans are wasteful? Does that mean that they still have remnants of human consciousness? Am I looking too deep into this? Sigh... but this isn't the manga's issue, it is just a zombie issue in general. Anyway, this manga is fine, and I don't have anything against it. It's nothing special, but it isn't terrible either, so I'll probably read the next installments.
Not a massive fan of zombies, not a massive fan of prison stories, but I wondered whether this mix of the two - a juvenile detention centre weathers the zombie apocalypse - would spark my interest anyway. The problem is, the manga loses no time in getting its core cast OUT of the prison on various missions, because the creator doesn't really seem to have much of a take on how the two genres might blend either. So you have some zombie war stuff (with a couple of memorably freaky scenes) and some macho prison gang stuff (which is mainly rote) and the two halves don't really get to munch each other's brains much. Still, I gobbled down two volumes at considerable speed, so giving it less than a bare 3 stars seems unfair.
The first volume starts out as a pretty generic zombie apocalypse story, but the final few pages show promise that it might be putting a twist on the usual zombie formula. I look forward to seeing what the series does differently with the zombie genre.
This first volume reminded me a lot of Attack on Titan for the horror factor. It’s just another apocalypse situation with mass casualties. You get exactly what you’d expect with going into a series like this.
In the deepest recesses of his heart, man has always longed for the apocalypse, well now it's here, and we've got a front row seat.
Saya lagi ingin nonton film tema survival ya wabah zombie gitu tapi ngulang nonton Train to Busan atau Alive atau All of Us are Dead bukan pilihan saat ini.
Having the option of high walls and a defensible position certainly doesn't hurt. So, Fort of Apocalypse is a fantastically fun zombie apocalypse romp following four boys imprisoned in a Juvenille Correction Facility. The art is excellent though can get a bit muddled during action sequences, also you can tell the more central characters from the canon fodder based almost exclusively on how pretty they are, but that may change in later volumes. Currently it's more action than drama and there are some nice humor beats in the mix as well. And, based on the last few pages, it looks to be doing something interesting and unique with the zombies as well. Either way, it's a heck of a fun ride and I'm looking forward to reading more. ^_^
The reason for the zombie outbreak was not revealed at all in this volume and that makes this interesting. It was just like I have been placed in the middle story of a plot and my curiosity wants to learn the reason behind the disease and of course if there is a cure or a way to stop it from spreading further.
The four main characters, who are all interesting as well, was also the reason why I enjoyed reading this manga. One falsely accused, one super strong, one super smart, and one super cool. Adding that these four characters started at a prison was another why.
When the zombie outbreak reached the prison and these four went out, the shock they felt was shortlast as, you know, they are cool like that.
An ultra aggressive rabies-like virus breaks out and no one (including myself) was prepared for just how goddamn nasty it would be. The story focuses on a group of incarcerated young adult men, notoriously known by their cell number: 4. We follow them and how they attempt to handle the outbreak, offering a unique perspective on an age old horror: zombies.
This is more than your average flesh eating rodeo. They may move slowly, but every other surprise they have up their infection-riddled sleeves is terrifying. The build up to and framing of certain gore scenes was incredible. Can Takashi Miike please make this into a movie? I think he’d be perfect for it. 🖤
How did this virus start? And what will happen to the men of Cell 4? I’m dying to know.
A group of juvenile delinquents plus our main character (who is, of course, innocent) fend off zombies.
I really liked the portion of the Walking Dead where they tried to make a home out of a prison and hoped this series would have more like that. Unfortunately, the group is already out of the facility by the end of the book so that possibly interesting part may be gone. The zombies are well-drawn and I'll try the second book to see if any of our cast shows character development beyond a generic 'I will cut you' mentality.
Yoshiaki Maeda, who was imprisoned on a false charge at Shoarashi Gakuen, a juvenile rehabilitation facility where delinquents from all over the Kanto region gather. For Yoshiaki, who was an ordinary boy, life in a violent prison was nothing but despair. Iwakura, Yamanoi, and Yoshioka, who became the same room in the prison, are all rogues, and Yoshiaki is quickly embroiled in a conflict within the prison. Meanwhile, a collision accident of an escort vehicle occurs in the facility. What appeared from inside the car was a zombie that was dead and still walking, eating humans.
Finally reading a horror manga for the Halloween season. This is a zombie story that takes place in a juvenile detention center, and the gimmick of showing the population of inmates and guards with death counts rising helps make it exciting.
So far, it's fine and I think the art has horrific and iconic moments such as a naked man sitting atop an enormous mountain of corpses. Curious to learn more about Maeda and what really happened when he got accused of a crime he supposedly didn't commit.
I'll review the whole series here, with no spoilers. Except for the ending that was a little too convenient, the series as a whole was pretty solid. I very much enjoyed the portrayal of zombies and the twist on such a popular (and sometimes repetitive) genre. Plus, there are some scenes that are hilarious (thanks to the drawings). Would definitely recommend.
I think I would give it 3.5 stars. I thought it was really interesting and will continue reading the series, but I wasn't fully able to get completely into the story yet
