COLLECTING: DEADPOOL 28-29, DEADPOOL & THE MERCS FOR MONEY 9-10, SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL 15-16
Shiklah has finally kicked Deadpool to the curb and decides to take over NYC. The story crosses through all three Deadpool titles, World's Greatest, Spider-Man / Deadpool, and Deadpool & the Mercs for Money. It's a fun, goofy crossover. Spider-Man and Machine Man liven the party up.
Very silly indeed and half the cast were acting entirely out of character but it had its moments. I laughed out loud a few times... also, I'll take all the Machine Man I can get; I love that guy...
[Read as single issues] Deadpool's world (and his marriage) finally come crashing down in this triple book crossover that ropes in both Spider-Man and the Mercs For Money in a six part war stuffed full of monsters, mercenaries, and murder. Lots of Ms.
This is one of those crossovers that feels like Marvel had the idea before they plotted out the individual issues. The Mercs For Money and Spideypool issues feel a little tacked on at times, and just serve to stretch the story out - the shift in focus in each issue is quite dramatic too, so even though each issue still feels like the series it's a part of, it doesn't feel very cohesive as a whole. The ultimate ending is fun, but I do wonder if Duggan has any further plans for Shiklah, or if this is the end of her until someone decides to dig her back up for continuity further down the line.
Scott Koblish (Deadpool chameleon artist extraordinaire), Iban Coello, and Salva Espin are all very solid on visuals, and are much more together than the storyline, even with different artists and inkers paired with each of them.
If you've been reading Deadpool and his myriad of mini-series and spin-offs, you'll get a kick out of this. For those just reading the main series, just read Parts 1 and 6 and be done with it.
This was excellent! Quality jokes, a nice end to the most recent story arc, and some great interplay between Deadpool and Spidey. I look forward to where Gerry Duggan takes the merc next.
This is the collected edition of a crossover event running through issues of the three Deadpool titles ('Deadpool', 'Spider-Man/ Deadpool' and 'Deadpool and the Mercs for Money'). Fed up with the way monsters are treated by humans, Deadpool's succubus wife Shiklah decides to take over Manhattan. Deadpool, along with Spider-Man and the Mercs for Money, attempt to stop her.
I liked the idea of this plot as it gives you both an opportunity for monsters to roam around New York and to see what martial strife is like with Deadpool and Shiklah. The monster side of things is a lot of fun with a range of weird creatures appearing including the new 'Howling Commandos' and a load of vampires (so Blade naturally turns up too). You wouldn't have thought that the writer would manage to do a proper relationship story when those involved are a regenerating mercenary mutant and an ancient succubus yet somehow Duggan manages it.
It did feel disjointed at times and the Mercs for Money issues especially felt tacked onto the event. You couldn't ignore them though as the plot does run directly through all the issues. It really felt though that the Mercs for Money were not needed in the story- plus there's the fact that the Mercs line-up is far inferior to the original one.
There's some decent artwork here with some Jack Kirby style monster panels. Despite there being three different artists they actually compliment each other well which is something than can rarely be said for this sort of crossover event.
An enjoyable story which might have been better if it was self-contained in the main Deadpool title.
Only in Marvel can you have a villain that is simultaneous a global threat requiring the attention the 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes', and at the same time a basement dwelling video game nerd, without having it feel contradictory to character or plot.
I’ve been reading this series for Deadpool’s own special brand of humor. I haven’t been as big a fan of the whole Shiklah thing; I don’t really care for the paranormal side of comics. So I’m glad that her particular chapter in Deadpool’s story is closed. But, even though the subject matter in this book wasn’t my favorite...there was actually some good balance and it didn’t get “too weird” (which I say loosely). The idea of a monster underworld attacking New York City was...pretty cool. And exciting. And funny. I enjoyed Spider-Man’s role in it—humorous as always. And the idea of a Van Helsing facing off against Dracula in a video game...was so stupidly perfect in all the right/wrong ways. Blade’s cameo was also interesting, as I haven’t read anything with him before. It was nice to meet him in the books, even if I’m not exactly planning to read his titles. (Again, not a fan of paranormal stuff.) Still, I was surprised by this graphic novel. Not my favorite, but still a pretty solid read.

Na szczęście do awantury dołączył Spider-man, bo całość byłaby dużo mniej strawna.
Well, we've been heading this way for a while - but the end of Deadpool and Shiklah's marriage is finally here.
And kudos to Gerry Duggan who has been giving us breadcrumbs of this storyline for quite some time... which actually made it kind of relatable in a weird way. I mean, relationships do also blow up suddenly, but usually they kind of get worse and worse slowly, until one day the inevitable happens. So for Duggan to have this whole breakup happen in real time slowly but surely, was a great way to ground Deadpool as a character.
This storyline is spread out between 3 titles... the main Deadpool book, the Spidey/Deadpool book, and the book about the Deadpool mercenaries. And each title handled the whole "Shiklah is waging war on humanity with her monsters thing" pretty well.
This one ends with Deadpool definitely not married anymore, but he is a bit more mature now to handle it. Let's see how he keeps handling it from here on out.
Every reader of Deadpool saw this coming eventually... Shiklah, tired of holding back her power as Queen of the Underworld (and more than likely annoyed with Deadpool LOL) decides to invade the surface world with all of her monsters. Obviously, that will not stand for 'Pool and all the other heroes, but they are seemingly unstoppable. Who can rein Shiklah in? Their only idea is her estranged ex-fiance Dracula. SO..... off the Mercs for Money go, to Eastern Europe to find Dracula, only securing his help once he is beaten in a fighting video game (the irony and hilarity of this is worth the entire Volume). The war is fought, the monsters stopped, a divorce and then a marriage... then the happy couple (Shikah and Dracula) go off on their own to live their lives. What's next for you Deadpool? Keep the comedy flowing in the MU. :) Recommend.
A solid coda to several Deadpool storylines. His wife takes over NYC in retaliation for humans killing a confused demon with dementia. The story ends up pulling in the Mercs, Spider-Man, and more. If you've been enjoying Duggan's long-term Deadpool storytelling, this is a great endpoint for the marriage saga. It does, however, completely pause the Madcap storyline. If you were enjoying the Madcap narrative more than the marriage saga, you can skip this one and move on to volume nine.
I don't think I've ever previously read this far into Duggan's Deadpool run. It's probably the best narrative in the book's history. It's also largely unproblematic while still absolutely nailing the Ryan Reynolds-esque Deadpool humor. You absolutely shouldn't start with this volume, but I think reading Duggan's full run on Deadpool is more satisfying than even Daniel Way's tenure.
Shiklah, Queen of the Monster Underworld has had enough. After the death of an ancient monster, Shiklah declares war on the race of man! Obviously, this sort of thing will put a brutal strain on a marriage and things really haven't been all that great between Deadpool and his demon bride lately.
A superior chapter in Gerry Duggan era of the Merc with a Mouth. With issues of a couple of other series tying in the action, this volume is full of great cameos as well as team-ups with the Amazing Spider-Man, the Mercs For Money led by Domino, and a mystery player that if revealed might just spoil the whole thing.
Great artwork by a team led by Silva Espin and Joshua Corin. Really playful and full of action. I’d really like to see where a lot of the bit players in this chapter go next.
A crossover between the three Deadpool books (two of which I didn't know existed). After a monster gets killed by armed New Yorkers, Shiklah leads the residents of Monster City in a take over of New York. The Mercs For Money help fight the monsters while Deadpool and Spider-Man for Dracula, who they think will help them out for some reason.
Honestly, I would have preferred Deadpool and Shiklah have a serious conversation about their relationship. This substitutes action for real drama, which of course it does, but apparently I want more serious writing. In a Deadpool book. I'll shut up now.
Well, the bleep hits the fan here as Shiklah unleashes her forces against everyone and Wade is helpless to stop it. This crossover set in Deadpool's books is good but the ending was anti-climatic and the Merc's role was near pointless. I enjoyed the comedy, the full circle moments, and the stakes but there were a bunch of unnecessary elements that drug it down. The book would have been better served be two issues lighter and a more impactful ending. The art, by multiple artists was very good. Overall, a fun romp through Wade's world.
Not as funny as some Deadpool volumes are, but the change in tone is a natural aspect of the storyline that this series has been building to. The humor is still there, and the overall plot (with a couple exceptions) is well-told. I'm not sure if/where this series is going next, but I've been generally happy with it after getting past the (very) rough start of the first few volumes.
I read this in single issues through Marvel Unlimited, but I don’t track much of my comic reading on Goodreads. Just the awesome stuff I want to remember. This was a fun crossover event. It felt a bit like someone wanted to write Shiklah away for reasons I wouldn’t agree with, and it was maybe too short. But it was funny and had some softer-hearted elements, which suits the characters involved.
Basically, it's hard to tell the difference between the characters' regrets and Duggan's regret for starting this Shiklah story. I wonder if it has any real payoff planned or if it were just meant to be unsatisfying.
