In this page-turner of a thriller by bestselling author T.R. Ragan, unlikely partners PI Jessie Cole and crime reporter Ben Morrison search for clues to a mystery buried in their own pasts—only to discover that sometimes the truth is better off buried.
Ten years ago, PI Jessie Cole and reporter Ben Morrison each suffered a tragedy that changed their lives—and now these two strangers are about to share a nightmare.
For Jessie, who makes her living finding missing persons, no case has consumed her more than the disappearance of her younger sister, Sophie. But left alone to raise Sophie’s daughter, she realizes that solving the case has become an unhealthy obsession.
For Ben, a horrific car accident resulted in scars both physical and emotional—and amnesia that has made his life a mystery. But curiously, out of his shattered memories, there’s one person he recognizes without a doubt: Jessie’s sister. He just doesn’t know why. Yet.
But Sophie isn’t the only phantom drawing Jessie and Ben together. An elusive serial murderer known as the Heartless Killer has reemerged from the shadows. His next move will cut even deeper into Jessie’s worst fears. And for Ben, what happens this time is going to be unforgettable.
Gruesomely good thriller about a missing girl, a private investigator, a serial killer, and a reporter with amnesia. All of their stories become intrinsically linked as “The Heartless Killer” targets his next victims.
PI Jessie Cole’s sister Sophie disappeared 10 years ago. While Jessie has never given up of finding her sister, she has chosen to move on with her life and find other missing girls. For her latest case she has been hired to find Zee, a schizophrenic woman who has gone missing without a trace.
Jessie’s personal life is a mess, she is struggling to balance raising her sister’s 14 year old daughter, while dealing with the fallout of a case gone wrong. Her ex, a police detective who is investigating “The Heartless Killer” has recently come back into her life and her niece has taken in a stray dog named Higgins, causing further havoc.
Ben Morrison, a reporter who lost his memory 10 years ago, also plays a central role. When he sees a TV show about Sophie’s case, his memory sparks leading him to Jessie. Ben starts his own investigation into Sophie's disappearance, hoping what he uncovers will help him regain his memory.
The story is told through multiple POV’s, including Jessie’s, Ben’s, Zee’s, and “The Heartless Killer’s.” Although multiple POV’s can be confusing, they really worked this book, especially since each character has such a distinct voice. I loved getting inside the sick and twisted head of “The Heartless Killer,” even though there were several moments that made me cringe.
This is a fast-past paced, quick read that I would have read in one sitting if I didn’t have to deal with stupid distractions, like work! The mystery is straightforward without any gimmicky twists, which I appreciated. There are some extremely brutal graphic torture scenes that can be hard to read. Overall, I truly enjoyed Her Last Day and would recommend to those who like a good thriller!
I was lucky enough to have won this book from a Goodreads giveaway!
P.I. Jessie Cole and crime reporter Ben Morrison search for clues to a mystery buried in their own pasts, only to discover sometimes the past is better off buried.
Everyone is talking about the Heartless Killer. Parents had been worrying and lecturing their kids about the serial killer on the loose for years now. Mostly they said to stay alert, never walk home alone, and of course not to talk to strangers. The killer was known to choose his victims at random, taking multiple victims before disappearing for months. His victims were tortured for months in a cold dark cell, in some creepy man's basement. Some of the victims were so tired of being tortured that they killed themselves. One hung himself and another had her husband kill her.
The Cole Sisters were born and raised in Sacramento. Sophie Cole disappeared. Her older sister Jessie Cole never treturned to school to get her degree. Because she never stopped looking for her sister. For the first two years she worked closely with the police. Then she became a private investigator ten years later after her sister disappeared. P.I. Jessie Cole and reporter Ben Morrison each suffered a tragedy that changed their lives and now these two strangers are about to share a nightmare.
T.R. Ragan is a new author for me. I will definitely be reading more of this author and this is the first book of a new series and I cant wait for the next one. This book was one hell of a ride. It moves at a thrilling pace with enough tension and suspense to keep the pages turning. When I read it at night I actually would check all the doors and windows to make sure they were locked. This book was super freaking creepy. It gave me the chills. It was so gripping.
I loved the characters and they really add to the story. The author made the characters come to life. It is very well written with twists and turns. There are several different mysteries going on. This book will grab you straight from the beginning and won't let go until the end. I recommend this series to Serial Killer thriller lovers. I want to thank Netgalley, Thomas & Mercer, and T.R. Ragan for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
4.5* A full-blown, chilling thriller that will keep you burning through the pages!
There are so many layers to this book. Three seemingly different storylines happening simultaneously, as they wove their through each other’s lives. Becoming intertwined for an incredible finale.
Jessie Cole is a private investigator raising her 14 year old niece Olivia, ever since Olivia’s mother Sophie disappeared 10 years ago. As Jessie starts believing she’ll never find answers to her sister’s disappearance, in walks a reporter who states he may have known Sophie. Well, well, well!
Ben is happily married, a reporter for the local Sacramento newspaper. When he sees a cold case TV show featuring the disappearance of Sophie Cole, he instantly recognizes her and hopes to do a feature story on her. The wrinkle? He was left with retrograde amnesia from a car accident 10 years ago. With absolute no memory of anything prior to the crash. So how exactly could he recognize Sophie?
Colin, a Sacramento detective and close “friend” of Jessie, is knee-deep in a ruthless, serial killer case, being dubbed The Heartless Killer. He’s racing against time to find the killer, as more victims are piling up.
So fast and twisty, this book came together at breakneck speed! We basically read this book in just a few sittings. When I wasn’t reading it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. All the storylines and all the characters came together brilliantly. With just the right amount of creepiness, I needed to read this with the lights on! (Bright!) Exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend!
This is book one in a new series for T.R. Ragan. Before I reached the last page I was already searching out the release date for book 2 - Deadly Recall due out Mach 27th 2018
A Traveling Sister read with Brenda!

I read Her Last Day with Kaceey and we read this one mostly in one day. Once we started reading this one, we couldn’t put it done until we found out more about “her last day.”
Her Last Day is a fast-paced, gripping, intense and creepy disturbing psychological thriller that started off a little bumpy for us with the psychological torture used here by the Heartless Killer yet we couldn’t stop reading as we were pulled into the other mysteries here within the story.
T.R Ragan does a fantastic job creating some intriguing, likable characters here that had us engaged in their stories right from the start. We hear from a few different POV’s with each bringing their own distinct voice and mystery to the story. The Heartless Killer’s voice left us feeling chilled and pushed us a little out of our comfort zone with the chilling and disturbing ways he used psychological torture but still left us turning the pages as fast as we could.
There are three mysteries going on here and we found all three interesting and we thought T.R. Ragan did a great job weaving them all together for a startling and satisfying ending. We will be looking out for the second one in this series. We highly recommend.
Thank you To NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and T.R. Ragan for a copy to read and review.
Brenda's & Kaceey's reviews say it best so I have just wrote a short review!
HER LAST DAY by T.R. RAGAN is an engaging, intense, and a fast-paced psychological thriller novel that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
T.R. Ragan delivers an intriguing & multi-layered story here with likeable characters that was told through multiple POV’s with each one bringing their own unique voice and mystery to the story, that I found extremely exciting, interesting and compelling to read.
In addition to reading this book, I purchased myself a copy of the audiobook and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance by Kate Rudd and thought she delivered the perfect voice for the characters to make this an enjoyable and entertaining read.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and T.R. Ragan for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review!!
I devoured this book. I would have finished it in one sitting if pesky life things like work and other people hadn't gotten in the way. We follow several different people and a few different storylines, but they were all so unique and the characters had their own distinct voice, so I never got confused. It just flowed and kept my attention the whole time. I may have had to put it down, but I couldn't wait to get back. I really enjoyed T.R. Regan's Lizzy Gardner series, so I should have known I was in for a treat.
Jessie is a private investigator who has been left to raise her sister's child. Her sister Sophie has been missing without a trace for years. In the past, she's been obsessed with finding her. Did she die, or did her wild side carry her away from her daughter, leaving Jessie with the responsibility of raising the girl? When she gets in trouble for shooting a man in self defense, she wants to focus on clearing her name and raising Olivia, who is now a teenager. Then another case gets thrown in, a desperate father searching for his daughter Zee, who has schizophrenia.
She has a lot on her plate, and more is coming... Ben, a crime reporter, wants to look into the missing Sophie and write a story on her. He is drawn to it after watching a cold case report on TV. He's a great reporter and a family man with a loving wife and two children... but he was in a tragic accident years ago that left his body scarred and his mind damaged. Though he's clearly managed to carve out a new life for himself, he has no memory of the man he was before the accident. So why is he so drawn to Sophie and therefore Jessie?
As if that isn't enough to make an exciting story, we have Jessie's ex Colin who is chasing a depraved murderer nicknamed "The Heartless Killer". He strikes randomly, with no discrimination towards sex or age. Everyone has to be wary... including the characters we're getting to know and love. Chapter with this mysterious killer are disturbing. We're left desperate to figure out who he is and how to stop him.
Well developed characters, not one but two crazy mysteries, and a stray dog. The characters are incredible. You're rooting for them the whole time and really get involved in their stories. Jessie is insanely likeable, and I hope to see even more of Olivia in future stories. She wants to follow in her aunt's footsteps, and with her big heart and keen mind, I think she'll be incredible at it.
P.s. Hooray for Higgins!
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.
Jessie’s mother abandoned them. Her father takes to drinking. Her younger sister, Sophie, got pregnant when she was sixteen. One night Sophie goes out but she never comes back. Now after ten years she’s still missing and Jessie’s searching for her. she’s become a private detective and she takes care of her niece.
Ben is a crime reporter. Ten years ago he had an accident, the one that no one came out alive except Ben. He lost his memories that day. Now after ten years, he got married with two kids but he can’t remember about her past or about his accident until he saw Sophie’s picture on TV. So he contacts Jessie to help her find Sophie. But what’s the string between Sophie and Ben? Can Jessie trust him? Is Sophie alive or dead?
But Jessie has another problem! She shoots some one and claimes she was defending herself but the evidences are against her! Who wants to get rid of her? And why?
You think the story is just this!? Nope, you’re wrong! Jessie’s friend, Colin, is a detective. One of his cases is about Heartless Killer! Six years, thirteen victims! And he doesn’t have anything that can help him to find out about the perp. Until now!
The author didn’t finish there! A man goes to Jessie and wants her help to find her daughter who has schizophrenia and she suffers from depression and hallucinations. But he, himself, is so weird and the neighbors don’t tell good things about him! So what’s wrong with him? and where is her daughter?!
Well, as you can see this story is full of suspense and I enjoyed every sec of it. it’s really a page turner. I couldn’t put it down for a minute. the writing was awesome and the characters were well-written. It was my first read by this author but definitely won’t my last. Told in multiple POV, 3rd person. it’s the first installment in "Jessie Cole" series but it can be read as a stand-alone. Overall, I loved it and hope you enjoy it as well!
Thanks to T.R. Ragan, Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for the advanced digital copy in exchange an honest review.
If you know you're going to be interrupted or have things you must do, don't start reading this book. Action and twist starts with the first sentence and won't stop until the last sentence. Ingenious plot, serial vicious killer and missing sister. Ben Morrison report, lost his memory in the car accident. He is writing a story about the sisters and their lives. PI Jessie Cole not only looking for her missing sister, but helping others to find their loved ones. Engaging, fast paced story.
A brand new series by the author of the Lizzy Gardner series, as well as the Faith McMann Trilogy. As I have read all of her books, I can honestly say I've never been disappointed. Her books are well-written with terrific characters, even if they are riddled with issues and scars ...inside and out.
What you get with HER LAST DAY :
PI Jessie Cole, who's raising her niece, after her sister disappeared 10 years ago
Ben Morrison, Crime Reporter, who was in a car crash 10 years earlier, and has no memory of anything before that time.
A psychopathic killer, dubbed the Heartless Killer, who was cruelly abused as a child
A girl in a box
A man named Dog
A house of torture
A schizophrenic captive
A knife
Blood .. lots of blood
The suspense starts on the very first page and doesn't let up until the very last. There are multiple players in this thriller, making it hard to guess how it all ends. I really look forward to the next book in this series.
Many thanks to the author / Thomas & Mercer / Netgalley for the advance digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This was a good smooth read and I look forward to reading more of the series and the author.
The story starts with Ben, who crawls out of a car after a bad accident. He cannot remember who was with him and even who he is.
Jessie Cole, a private investigator, has been detained in a Sacramento police station. She shot someone, who is now critical. She maintains it is self-defence and she fired away being shot at by Parker Koontz. Jessie was hired by Adelind Rain to watch Parker Koontz, who she believes was stalking her. Koontz’s business partner flatly denies he could do such a thing. Jessie cares for her niece Olivia, whom she was to pick up. This is since her sister Sophie went missing many years back. Colin, an officer she had a relationship with, in the past, steps in to help.
There is a ‘Heartless’ serial killer on the prowl. A young girl, Erin has been kidnapped. She joins Garrett who is also held by the serial killer. The serial killer has a grudge from the past against Sue Steeling who was once a social worker, and decides to wreck his vengeance on her daughter Natalie Bailey.
Ben has now been a crime reporter for 20 years; the accident was 10 years back. He still feels disoriented sometimes. He is married to Melony, a nurse who cared for him. They have two kids – Abigail & Sean. The cold case of Sophie Cole airs on TV, featuring an interview with Jessie. Ben feels he has met her but cannot remember anything. As Jessie is out on bond, awaiting her trail, she is engaged on a case by Arlo, who asks her to help find his daughter Zee. Zee is schizophrenic and has wandered off before.
The story starts off with several different tracks, and they later converge to primarily two – one in the past and one in the present. Jessie & Ben’s characters are excellent – very loveable characters brought together by a past they do not fully understand. The pace is very good and I was hooked to the story. There are aspects of the serial killer character which tread the familiar path. I especially liked how Ben pieces together the story of what possibly happened 10 years back.
Good story, strong & loveable characters, great pace – go for it!
Thank you to Wunderkind PR for sending me a copy of Her Last Day by T.R. Ragan. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I have never read anything by T.R. Ragan but I will most definitely continue the series of Jessie Cole. And, that right there is saying something because I rarely keep up with a series anymore. Her Last Day was fast paced with short chapters that genuinely creeped me out. I typically read outside so if I told you that I wasn’t looking over my shoulder every minute I’d be lying to you.
So what’s it about? It had everything! There were a few different storylines but it was still easy to read and I was never confused. Jessie Cole is a private investigator in Sacramento CA. I thought she was pretty bad ass. She is raising her niece alone after her sister Sophie disappeared 10 years ago. In the beginning of the story Jessie is being questioned and booked over one of her own investigations. Once she is out she is approached by a man named Arlo Gatley to find his missing daughter who is schizophrenic. As usual, she will do anything to find her.
We also have Colin who is a detective in Sacramento desperately trying to catch The Heartless Killer. The serial killer has been at it for years and is very random. He goes after men, woman and children. The Heartless Killer is ruthless and stands true to his name. The gruesomeness of his crimes is what truly made me cringe. Still, I loved it because I’m a freak like that.
Ben is a crime reporter who was in bad accident 10 years ago which left him with amnesia. He can’t remember anything from 10 years ago. While Ben was at home with his family, he comes across a TV series of cold cases. He immediately has a reaction to seeing Sophie on the show but he does not know why or when he could have ever met her. Ben then decides to team up with Jessie Cole to figure out what happened to Sophie.
I’m going to rate Her Last Day 5 stars. Again, I really enjoyed it and I’m definitely interested in reading the rest of the Jessie Cole series. Highly recommended!
What a fantastic read Jessie a detective trying to find out what happened to her sister Sophie, and she gets involved in a shooting and she's in trouble.and investigate missing women a killer on the loose.so many twists and turns.just love her books.highly recommend.brilliant writing.
Jessie Cole is one fierce, tenacious Private Detective. She has had to be. Ten years ago, her sister disappeared, leaving Jessie to care for Sophie’s daughter Olivia, who is now a teenager. Ben Morrison is a reporter. Ten years ago, he was in a horrible accident and has had amnesia ever since. He recalls nothing of his life “before” - until seeing a photo of Jessie’s sister, Sophie.
As a PI, Jessie works to find deadbeats and missing persons. It often gets her into trouble, lots of it. When a distraught father hires her to find his daughter, Zee, Jessie takes the case. Little does she know the horrific danger it brings to her door.
“Her Last Day” is a mystery by T.R. Ragan and is the first in the Jessie Cole series. While I liked the character of Jessie Cole and some supporting characters including Olivia and Zee, unfortunately there’re were several intertwining storylines that I didn’t think meshed very well together. In addition, I also found the storyline of Ben to be underwhelming. That said, I will be continuing on with the series as I received the second book from NetGalley and I have high hopes for it
A harrowing rollercoaster ride complete with unsuspecting twists and turns that will leave you breathless!
A serial killer known as the 'Heartless Killer', has eluded authorities for years. He's responsible for 13 deaths — that they know of.
Detective Colin Grayson has been chasing the Heartless Killer since the very beginning and is no closer to catching him then ever. He's put aside the serial killer case for now to assist in a new case of missing young women whose car is found abandoned on the side of the road. Her name is Erin. And Colin has a feeling that she may be another victim of the Heartless Killer.
Jessi Cole spent ten years searching for her sister, Sophie, who vanished without a trace. Facing the facts that she may never find Sophie she has finally decided to move on with her life. Now, as a private investigator, she searches for others who have gone missing. Jessi has just started a difficult new case of finding a young woman with psychiatric problems who has gone missing.
Then, out of the blue, a crime reporter says he may be able to help her find, Sophie. Jessi must decide if she wants to start searching for her sister all over again. Now, Jessi has some very hard decisions to make.
As the cases of the missing woman continue the more dangerous the searchs become and the time to find them alive is quickly running out.
****** Her Last Day by T.R. Ragan breaks out of the gates at a breakneck pace, gallops full out all the way to the shocking finale! As the time to solve the cases begins to run out, the pace of the story spikes, creating an adrenaline fueled ride. Once you pick it up you won't want to put it down!
This review is for an audiobook edition. I love audiobooks! More often than not I find that the narration adds to the enjoyment of a book. For this audiobook that is not the case. I always say that the narration can make or break a book so I have decided to review the novel AND the narrator(s) seperately. *note below*
I'm giving the narrator, Kate Rudd, 3.5★'s. Her voice is flat, without inflection, without emotion, and very bland. Honestly, I would have stopped listening and switched back to the book. The only reason I didn't is because I had lots of time in the car and I was reading this book for a challenge. The book itself is fantastic and I was already hooked from the beggining so I concentrated on just the story while tuning out the narrator. It's not an easy thing to do, I know, but I really was riveted to what was happening I didn't want to turn it off!
So, in a nutshell, READ THE BOOK! Not the audiobook.
I will be READING the second book in this series very soon and I'm excited to see what happens next!
**Note: If you are interested in a more detailed explanation of what I'm looking for in the narration performance of audiobooks I have a breakdown of the ratings on the bottom of my profile page. 😊
Wow, talk about powerful! This is my first novel by T.R. Ragan and what a first impression! Her writing was impressive, and the multiple storylines just hit you in the face like a cobweb in the night, you can't break free... you're all wrapped up in them!
Jessie Cole has spent 10 years wondering what happened to her sister, Sophie, she's the reason she became a private investigator. After years of searching the case went cold. Sophie's story is aired on an episode of Cold Case TV, one in which investigative reporter Ben Morrison happens to witness. A sudden surge of recognition flashes through his mind, strange, he hasn't felt this way in 10 years. Not since his fatal accident. The doctors said this might happen, that he might start seeing things, having flashbacks. Ben meets up with Jessie and sets out to see if Sophie's case can help reveal the answers to his past. Meanwhile, Jessie has been hired by a frantic father to search for his missing daughter, Zee, who suffers from schizophrenia. She has a history of wandering off when she's off her medication, but's what's worse, there's a sadistic killer at large, The Heartless Killer. Jessie's not sure if Zee is just wandering about, maybe at a friend's house, or if she could be suffering at the hands of The Heartless Killer. As if Jessie doesn't have enough on her plate with trying to find the missing girl, Zee, and uncover the truths about her sister's disappearance, she's now facing time in prison for shooting a man! As I said, there's so much going on here!
The character development in this novel was outstanding! You have such a sense of who these characters are and their is such a likability, or dislike even that you're so coupled with their stories. Hell, even the dog jumps off the page, he's leery at first, but then rises up and becomes valiant and strong. Almost like Jessie herself. It's like they say... a pet is like their owner, and often they come into your life when you need them the most. And The Heartless Killer and his story... well... I won't begin to go too much into that, but everyone is in for a real treat with his twisted undoing.
Even though there were so many different storylines, I found that each one was tied up very nicely. They were not rushed, or over done. I also didn't feel that I was bored by one story and anxious to get back to the other. They were all cohesive and very entertaining. I very much enjoyed this novel and I cannot wait for the next one in the series.
I want to thank NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and T.R. Ragan for allowing me the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for my review. "See it. Imagine it. Make it happen."
Book 1 in the Jessie Cole series. And what a terrific start this was. This was my first book by T.R. Ragan and I can say without a doubt that it will not be my last. Twenty years ago Jessie’s life was for ever changed when her sister disappeared without a trace. At the time of her disappearance Jessie’s sister left behind a baby girl ‘Olivia’, with Jessie’s mother dead and her father a drunk it fell to Jessie to raise Olivia on her own. She dropped out of school and took work where she could find it. Life was a struggle. Never giving up hope Jessie has searched for her sister ever since. An investigative reporter ‘Ben’ was is a serious car accident the night Jessie’s sisters disappeared. Ben was so traumatised by the accident that he lost his memory from before the accident. When Ben sees a photo of Jessie’s sister something jumps in his brain. He knows this girl but from where and when he has no idea. It’s not long before Jessie, who has become a PI, and Ben are working together trying to solve this problem. For Jessie it’s all about knowing what happened to her sister and for Ben it’s all about recovering his memory.
As if this is not enough, at the same time there is a very disturbed individual running around killing and terrorizing the local citizens.
This is on the seat of your pants stuff. I found myself reading this at the most inappropriate times, in bed, at the table, in the loo. What can I say, it’s unputdownable. I think I just invented a new word. :-)
Highly recommended for adrenalin junkies. 5/5 stars I’d give it more if I could.
Her Last Day was a fantastic and thrilling read with amazing characters and several storylines that come together in a riveting conclusion.
Ten years ago Jessie Cole’s sister Sophie disappeared without a trace, never to be seen or heard from again. As a result of her obsession over finding Sophie, Jessie became a private investigator who makes her living finding missing persons. Ten years ago Ben Morrison was involved in a horrific car accident that left him physically scarred with no memory from prior to the accident. However when he sees an image of Sophie, Ben knows without a doubt that he recognizes her but with no idea how. While Jessie and Ben begin to reinvestigate the case, a serial murderer lurks in the background drawing closer waiting for the right time to make his move.
Jessie has spent the years since Sophie’s disappearance devoted to researching her sister’s case while raising Sophie’s daughter Olivia. After years of obsession, she realized that she couldn’t keep devoting so much time to Sophie’s case if she was going to give Olivia the attention she needed. As a result she started her private investigator business and became somewhat well known after she found a missing fifteen year old that everyone else had given up on. After a shooting she was involved in a few years prior to the book, Jessie has memorized the laws concerning firing in self defense and she wears a GoPro camera at all times when out on her jobs.
After his accident ten years ago, Ben was left with third degree burns on over half of his body in addition to his amnesia. He ended up falling in love with and marrying his trauma nurse and the two have two children ages eight and nine. Ben works as an investigative reporter covering crime which is a job he held prior to his accident. After seeing an image of Sophie on a rerun of a cold case TV show, he instantly recognizes her and gets in touch with Jessie.
There are a few major side characters outside of people at the center of the cases Jessie is working. Olivia, now a very intelligent fourteen year old, enjoys helping her aunt with her cases and wants to follow in her footsteps and become a private investigator. At the beginning of the book, Olivia rescues a dog that was hit by a car and names him Higgins. Higgins was an incredibly sweet dog who becomes very protective of his new family and I enjoyed watching him get his happy ending. Colin is a homicide detective working the Heartless Killer serial murderer case and is Jessie’s former boyfriend. Colin and Jessie’s relationship was a surprisingly healthy one and I enjoyed the possibility of more for them at the end of the book.
There are four major storylines throughout the book; a stalker, Sophie’s disappearance, a missing woman, and the Heartless Killer case. The stalker case is the one most on the back burner as the events unfold at the beginning/end of the book while Jessie is not distracted by the other cases. Then there is Ben and Jessie’s investigation into Sophie’s disappearance which went in a few surprising directions. Next Jessie is hired by a man to find his missing daughter who has schizophrenia. Finally, there is the Heartless Killer case that Colin is investigating which follows a killer who has been terrorizing the area for six years. The author did an amazing job tying together some of the cases and I enjoyed how everything unfolded.
Her Last Day ended up being an amazing read and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I definitely recommend the book for anyone looking for a good crime thriller.
**I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Oh, don't mind me—I'm just trying to pick my jaw up from the floor as we speak. Her Last Day by TR Ragan is just a whirlwind of everything I love in an action-packed thriller. I've never read anything by TR Ragan before, but you have just earned yourself a new fan. Her Last Day is the beginning of Ragan's Jessie Cole series, and can be compared to notable works like UNSUB by Meg Gardiner or the upcoming Two Girls Down by Louisa Luna. The story starts off with tragedy as private investigator Jessie Cole and crime reporter Ben Morrison both suffer major losses that will ultimately affect them in the future. Unbeknownst to either of the two, this tragic event will intertwine them forever. As Jessie juggles her life as a private investigator, she also has the responsibility of raising her niece Olivia, while also navigating her relationship/non-relationship with Colin who she's shared a difficult past with. Set in Sacramento, California, the media is in a frenzy over this Heartless Killer that nobody can seem to get any dirt on. Who is this killer? Why doesn't he have a set pattern like other serial killers? And why does he get a kick out of torturing his victims in such vindictive, sadistic ways? As Jessie gets roped into a missing person's case, Ben tries to get to the truth of their shared series of unfortunate events 10 years ago. Who would have thought everything has a connection?
I knew that I'd love Her Last Day from the moment I got to Chapter 2—SERIOUSLY! This book alternates through different plot twists and turns while not being too over the top for a 300-page read. We not only get into the perspective of this Heartless Killer, but we also see how these characters struggle through various levels of conflict. We see secondary and tertiary plot developments grow and hinder Jessie and Ben, while also providing a catalyst for the main overarching story. I think this is a type of read that you really need to go in blind to truly enjoy. It's wickedly smart and super immerse and I guarantee that you'll be on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Thank you Wunderbooks PR for my copy. It was a pleasure to read and review this story!
Do you ever have mixed feelings when you pick up a book by an author you’ve heard plenty about but never actually read yourself? It’s like a blend of excitement that you may have just stumbled onto something great and apprehension that you’ll be disappointed. While the disappointment always stinks, finding a winner more than makes up for the flops and from the moment I started reading Her Last Day I knew that I had found a new favorite author!
This opens with an intense prologue that hooks you instantaneously, it’s fast and furious and that pace never lets up for one minute. It’s the beginning of a new series featuring Jessie, a PI with a troubled, complicated past who is flawed in the absolute best way. While I felt like I had a decent sense of who she is there is so much more to explore with her both in her personal life and her work life. It’s mostly told through the eyes of Jessie and Ben, a reporter that works cold cases, but there were chapters featuring the nameless serial killer that chilled me to the bone. The Heartless Killer is sadistic and twisted, there are some truly creepy moments that will make your skin crawl.
This was an effortless page turner, I absolutely flew through it, desperate to see how Ragan would weave various plot threads together. The chapters are short and snappy, the type that keep you up well past your bedtime, these type of reads are my hands down favorite. I’m so excited that Ragan has an extensive back catalogue that I can explore as the next book in this fantastic series won’t be out until next spring!
In this, you’ve got all the makings for success in my eyes: A female P.I., a personal mystery, an interesting sub-plot and a serial killer on the loose.
Those are some big plot lines that have half the magic built right into them, all the author needs to do is throw in a little glitter and fire. But this novel doesn't do that.
Jessie is pretty dull for a series lead. Her 14-year-old niece had more of a recognizable personality. Jessie came across as flat, humourless and without passion. She’s a PI because of the disappearance of her sister, but also “wants to put the past behind her” and has no interest in working with someone who wants to help her crack her sister’s cold case. Huh?
The serial killer spends most of his page-time supervising people in a cage. He can be a little sadistic and dark, but ultimately I found his evil-doer shtick to be pretty weak. The girls in the cages get most of the POV in the novel, but there’s only so much “she’s scared in a cage” that I can really take when it doesn't go anywhere.
It didn’t really feel like we were moving towards anything. Even when bodies are discovered, it happens off-page and the information is relayed later.
Technically the writing is fine. There didn’t seem to be much in the way of plot filler, but there was an “arm’s length” approach to the writing. The reader is never truly brought into the plot, but kept on the outside looking in. The novel heavily consists of Jessie and the reporter, Ben, talking to people about things that happened in the past instead of being involved in things that are happening now.
And how each story thread was wrapped up was a letdown. Over 300 pages of buildup, only for things to be resolved OFF-FUCKING-PAGE again, and relayed to the reader later.
There’s something missing in this novel for me. It didn’t connect. It’s just ok.

A new PI series from TR Ragan. I loved the Lizzie Gardner and Faith McMann series and couldnt wait for this book. It was one of the first books that I was approved for on Netgalley and it is finally close enough to release date to read and review it. An enjoyable read of Jessie Cole and her niece Olivia. Looking forward to reading more in this series. Thank you to Thomas and Mercer for an advance copy of this book to read and review
This was my first book from this author. Her Last Day grips you right from the start, exactly what a prologue should do. Once I started, I couldn't put the book down. There is so much going on in this book. There are multiple story lines that all come together nicely in the end.
Jessie's younger sister, Sophie disappeared 10 years ago. Having to move on and raise her niece alone, Jessie is now a private investigator and on the case of a missing woman.
Ben is a crime reporter who was in a horrific car accident 10 years ago and does not remember anything before the accident. He is a happily married family man but his past life remains a mystery. After seeing a picture of Sophie on Cold Case TV, he gets a feeling that he used to know her.
Colin is a detective leading the task force for the Heartless Killer. A serial killer who tortures his prey. With no MO, this killer has been on the hunt for years.
The characters were well-developed and the story was well-written. It's fast paced and keeps you captivated. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of T.R. Ragan's "Her Last Day".
Wow, this was right up my ally of psychological thriller pancaked together with a side of mystery. Two stories bring a group of people together to stop a serial killer and set a past tragedy to rest. Loved it and am looking forward to the next in the series
Finding a new series -especially one that shows promise - to me is akin to finding gold pellets in a stream. First comes the excitement of discovery, followed by the hope of more to come. Such is the case here, with the introduction of Sacramento, California, private investigator Jessie Cole. I won't say it was love at first word, but she's interesting enough that I look forward to future adventures.
As is the usual case with series heroines, Jessie brings "issues" to the table - most notably, the disappearance of her younger sister Sophie 10 years earlier. Since then, Jessie has become almost obsessed with finding her - or at least what happened to her - especially important since Sophie's daughter, Olivia, lives with Jessie and is for all intents and purposes now her daughter. When she's not focused on Sophie's disappearance, Jessie spends most of her time finding missing persons on behalf of her clients.
At the outset, one of those clients puts Jessie in a real bind. Hired to document a stalker, she ends up on the other side of the crime and facing prosecution (and possible jail time). Her one-time love interest, detective Colin Grayson, is still around, but for the moment, at least, their future as a couple doesn't seem to be in the cards. He's been hard at work trying to find the so-called Heartless Killer, who's kidnapped, tortured and killed numerous victims.
Almost out of the blue, Jessie is contacted by journalist Ben Morrison, who has a backstory of his own. A decade ago, he was seriously injured in an auto crash that left the driver dead and Ben with no memories of the accident or, for the most part, his past (except, I guess, his ability to write - apparently he's continued his newspaper career with only time out for recuperation). But now, triggered by bothersome but unexplainable flashbacks that include a woman who resembles Sophie, Ben wants to rehash her now-cold case, and it's important that he has Jessie's support.
He gets it, albeit reluctantly since Jessie questions his motives. And, she's got cases of her own to work on, including the possible kidnapping of a mentally disturbed young woman whose off-the-wall father is desperate to find. As all this plays out, chapters switch to what's going on with the very active serial killer; the only thing that's clear is that he will keep doing his thing until he's caught.
The action is almost nonstop, so I was happy to be able to finish the book in two days of spare-time reading (for the record, I'd have been even happier if I could have done it in a single day). Jessie is off to a great start -and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
T.R. Ragan delivers another great book. This is the first book in the Jessie Coles series, and having read two other series by this author I was not at all let down. Jessie is a private investigator who is raising her niece after the disappearance of her sister 10 years ago. She soon finds herself in danger in looking for a missing teen, being arrested for shooting at a stalker and meeting a journalist who may hold the key to finding her sister. I highly recommend this book and author, however be warned there is a graphic level of violence in this book which involves abuse and torture.
Typical, predictable crazed psychopath terrorizes the community. Police are stumped. At one point so many people have been abducted I begin to fear I am the only person left walking around free. And yes, the strong independent heroine gets herself into a jam and needs to be rescued by the big, strong man. Bleah.
I love T.R. Ragan's books. I know when I get one of her books, I am going to like it, enjoy it and rip right through it with pulse racing speed. This one did not fail to hit it out of the park for me again.
There were so many plot twists and angles going on that I was mesmerized throughout the book.
Definitely a great read for me.
Thanks to Thomas & Mercer and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
