What's a wizard to do when the world has fallen apart around him? Michael Hart has discovered that the answer is 'everything he can'. His old friend Rynn brought several student wizards to his place as things were falling apart. So his first job is to provide for himself and them. But the local town needs help also, and he's never been one to turn away when someone needs assistance. The Council of Wizards has always disliked him since he was too vocal with his opinions, which happened to oppose theirs. But now they want him out, permanently, so they can take over the crystal mine he's been managing. With raiders threatening the town, the Council after his head, and people to feed, Michael and Rynn need to find the cache that she knows is in the mine. Tom Larcombe was introduced to fantasy books at a young age. Those that were aimed more at children hooked him in, but not well enough for him to remember their names at this point in his life. Their draw led him to books aimed more for the adult reader and so he found himself, at around age eight, starting in on the Steven R Donaldson 'Thomas Covenant' series and the Hobbit, followed shortly thereafter by The Lord of the Rings books.
His reading tastes have never looked back, although they have broadened to include science fiction and the occasional non-fiction book.
He lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with his wife, two daughters, three cats, and a variable number of chickens.
The beginning was slow but it picked up midway thru the story! Wizards, fae and dragons, oh my! Michael worries too much, is too hesitant using his magic at times but I'm too invested in this series to stop reading! On to the next!
A good series, well written and interesting characters. Personal opinion only but the MFC is not my favorite. To me she comes across as just kind of odd. One moment she cares about her students the next doesn't seem to give a hoot. I do however like the MC he is someone caught between a rock and a hard place and not even sure why, but he steps up to care for his people.
Mistakes: I found one late in the book. The word in was in a sentence just kind of hanging around and acting all suspicious. Plot: Protecting the town from the wizards council. Characters: They keep second guessing themselves and feeling guilty for protecting themselves and the town. Gets old fast. 8/10
A fine read. I like the story line. Taking on Merlin and keeping the story about "another" character (Michael)? Well, it is good. There are a few plot holes - i.e. Finding the control switch; Restarting/Reviewing storylines to make it more interesting. Doesn't really work. Letting the story flow organically does. I can't imagine wait for #3. Onwards!!!
After thoroughly enjoying "light on line" I thought I'd give crow hill a read,I must admit the title had been putting me off , the story is enjoyable enough though the characters are pretty shallow and Rynn is a nightmare and emotionally a huge handicap to the MC who is already way out of his depth without a shallow female distraction.
This author has written several good stories with good MC;s However the MC in this series is hard to take. He in very introspective and whiny. I hate that type of personality. HE would rather die than shoot someone. He is that screwed up in the head. Not a good series/ He has a new book out Primal Forest that is so far a great start on a series and the MC is rational.
This was a very entertaining fast paced action packed story that I really enjoyed reading. Didn’t know that it was a sequel series to Merlin, but I think the Author was just finding out how to tell a story in that one so I’ll skip it till it’s remade.
This book was mostly concerned with fighting. Some pivotal story elements emerge but I was disappointed that nothing decisive happened. Still interested though.
The three (so far) books read more like a single long novel than a stand alone story. Great characters, good plot, lots of detail and action. Highly recommend.
