This book was actually painful to get through. The only reason I read the book was because of a promotional exam that was based on it. 46 of the 100 questions came from this book so it was a requirement to know the material. I read chapters 1-13 being that the other chapters would not be covered.
Not only do the authors contradict themselves multiple times throughout but they also over complicate and convolute basic topics for no apparent reason. Three other books were covered on the exam and I studied those as well and I noticed numerous times where the overlapping topics would not agree and say different things were true.
I purchased the study guide version of this book as well and took all of the practice exams built in. After reading the main book and the study guide I still did not have a good grasp on the material due to the above reasons. I consistently scored in the 80’s on all of them.
I have been an officer for over ten years in patrol, K9, FTO and SWAT. There were no real take aways that I feel I can use in a leadership role that I haven’t already learned on the job or from previous schooling(bachelors in management) and life. In no way am I a better leader or more capable/prepared to fill a supervisory role after completing this book.
To any who have to read this for a test to promote… I am truly sorry. To any who want to read it to better themselves… look elsewhere.
