Lady of Darkness #1

Of Death And Darkness

Rate this book
Mel spends the first twenty-four years of her life as a friendless loner with no family. All she is trying to do is find her place to exist. What she is expecting is definitely not what she gets. Will she be able to handle the destiny that the fates have chosen for her?

"It's so peaceful here at the ocean. You have the constant drowning of the waves crashing against each other and on the shore. The wind is never still. Always a nervous bee in your ear. If I've ever thought of any place as home, this would be it. Finding myself lost in my thoughts again, I take a seat in the sand and stare blankly out into nothing.

The silence is the first thing that I notice. The static behind my ears has been my companion for well over two years. So of course, I should notice when it decides to go on vacation. I'm automatically on alert. I don't stand or make any sudden moves, because I don't know where the precognition of danger is coming from.

If I hadn't been searching, I probably never would have seen them."

It's no secret that 90% of the books I read are of the supernatural/paranormal variety so it's an understatement to say I have some expectations. Well...one of those expectations is that there be a "realness" to the story and the characters behaviors/reactions - i.e. If something freaky happens you are freaked out (standard reactions here people...not asking for the moon). I get that you have to suspend belief with the supernatural/paranormal BUT standard reactions should remain the same. I didn't get that here at all and the main culprit is the heroine.

The heroine grew up in the foster care system and had lived at some rough places so I expected her to have some common sense about questionable situations. I also expected her to ask questions - ya know.. so she doesn't end up in a potentially bad situation!

Upon meeting who I though would be the Heros and in her harem they invite her to a party - not a problem.
Upon arriving at said party she realizes she is the only woman there and is now surrounded by 9 men and she is a rather small woman (5'3"). To me that would make me leary and slightly uncomfortable but apparently not her.
Next thing you know a blunts being passed around and the heroine makes the extremely smart decision to get high...while surrounded by 9 men that she doesn't know and are in the middle of no where *scratches head about her choices*
Next thing ya know she wakes up at home thinking it was all a dream. Now me personally I'd be freaking out worrying why I couldn't remember the previous night....but not this heroine!

Two or so days later when she discovers what the guys are she has NO REACTION AT ALL! She never really questions them - if they're good or bad (ya know...common sense questions) - about anything. Never wonders if they've brainwashed her, done things to her and then took those memories, or if they've taken her blood without her permission. She just jumps on the vampire train and goes with the flow *face-palm*

Moving on, the guys we initially met are not her harem and only one of them is her mate BUT they will all be in her coven. She'll give blood to all the guys but is only mated to one and doesn't have sexual relations with any of the others. I was questioning if this was really going to be an RH at this point.

Moving on again, they all get invited to another coven for a visit due to the resistance upping their hunting of the vampires. Understandable but her guys came from this other coven and two of them were sexual with the "lady" of the coven - one of them being her mate - and she just overlooks it and says "lets go!" So maybe I'm weird but I'd have no desire to hang out with a woman who had sex with MY mate and another one of my coven.

Arriving at the other coven we meet even more vampires and quite frankly at that point their names all started running together. The "lady" of the other coven is what I call a passive aggressive bitch. Ya know...nice to your face but constantly making underhanded comments and trying to make herself appear better than you...yeah, that's her!

After the heroines kidknapped - gotta have that! - she meets another one of her "mates". Now this guy was a part of the other coven and until a few weeks ago was in a sexual relationship with the "lady". He also has a very bad reputation among the other vampires as being "bad". You know he's "bad" when other "bad" vampires call him "bad" BUT no worries he saves the heroine and her mate then tells her to "have fun with him tonight". Cuz, that's what a mate does (I'm ignoring the heroine inability to question situations by this point because she's already proved that she's got no self preservation sense at all). Of course they mate and her coven - who severely disliked the guy - now accept him. That means that both of her mates have been in a sexual relationship with the "lady" of the coven they are visiting. At this point - Mates or not - I'd be dealing with some confidence issues. The other "lady" is described as being extremely beautiful. I'd also be feeling uneasy staying in the house with my mates previous lover. But not this woman...

After that I'd be done with OW drama but nope...we meet another coven and our first introduction to their "lady" is her laying a huge, in your face, ignoring the fact that the heroine is standing there kiss one one of her guys. But again...no worries, the chicks cool and they can be friends! *bangs head on table and seriously debating DNF'ing*

So the story progresses and now it's the Heros turn to be kidnapped and the heroines chance to save them. In this process she meets and starts working with another vampire - not a mate but at this point he takes the protector role - and works with the other "ladies" to rescues the guys.

Along with the covens they also rescue another guy who will only speak to our heroine and low and behold he's another one of her mates! After he fully becomes a vampire by drinking her blood he's this this vampire saviant as he knows EVERTHING about being a vampire...after less than a day of actually being a vampire. Must be nice to be THAT knowledgeable...*smh*

After some more drama and finding out that the covens have been betrayed and running away Ryker - her protector - tracks her down and they have sex. Now I'm really confused because at this point she's only had sex with her mates. So is Ryker a mate or just in her coven because if he's not a mate then she's really short changing he other guys in her coven that she's known longer. They aren't getting anything but blood from her...but that points not expounded on or explained.

Finally, after some dreamwalking (yeah, no explanation is giving as to why or how either...and of course our heroine never bothers to ask those questions..) the covens are sent on a mission to rescue a girl that the resistance is holding by an original vampire. The end....

In summation all I've learned is that our heroine is an idiot with no common sense or self preservation instincts who doesn't care who her mates have had sex with and isn't putting out for the rest of her harem/coven Oh..and she's perfect at everything she attempts to do. .

Ultimately I won't be continuing as there is a distinct lack of any "realness"

WOW!

First, I want to say that I love the cover of this book. I am a stickler for a cover. Secondly, the men in this book are indeed drool worthy. I love that each scene is crafted in a way that it’s not over bearing. You fall without even leaving the comforts of your home. The sex scenes are not at all over the top and the storyline is amazingly effortless. I love this book and will purchase because I can definitely see me reading this again! On to book 2!

I recommend this for all the Reverse Harem readers and anyone that loves a great love story laced with all the thrill stopping action!

Everything is too perfect, no character development, and no real plot

I did not particularly enjoy this book. We don't really get to know each of the characters that were introduced in the book. Everybody just sort of magically comes together except we missed the why. The main plot in the story was rather weak. The few girls in the book were in the best of friends club and everything is magically fine. Towards the 1/4 end of the book I found myself just skimming.

The story sucked me in from the start. There is something about the writing, I can't quit put my finger on it, that just gets you hooked.

Mel is 24 and lonely. She's all alone, aside for her oddball of a cat Apollo.
By a chance encounter she meets a group of boys. There was like a thread, a pull, that led her to them. Later on, it becomes known that they are a coven. Of vampires (but not a traditional kind). And she is their Lady.
The origins of vampires were rather interesting. Supposedly, vampires are the result of a long time experiment. That was new and I liked the idea.

The story itself reminded me of a Mona Lisa series, except this one was executed better, with a more interesting plot line. I liked the characters and the dynamic between them.
The relationships did not feel forced, but actually rather natural. And I liked the girl power aspect. Mel became such a badass by the end.
I really hope there is going to be a follow up for the story.

This book starts out a little rough to get into, but then somehow it starts to get really good. I thought the story line was very good, and I enjoyed the characters a whole lot.

I just hope there will be more to the series because one is not enough. There were a few things with the book that didn't make sense, but I'm hoping that gets answered in the next book!

This had action, and romance so it was pretty good to me!

Give it a chance....

I didn't read the other reviews before reading this and found it interesting afterward that we all felt the same. I almost gave up on the book in the beginning as it moved too slow and felt a bit detached. Then all of a sudden it grabbed me in the middle and I couldn't stop reading it. So for those who are unsure, give it a chance and I promise you won't be disappointed. Looking cowardly the next installment.

Well the first fifty pages were boring as fuck and super weird. But the pace took off around the second third, and i became totally hooked.
The story is not perfect nor are the characters, but globally the book is really entertaining and enjoyable. I can't wait to read the second one!

I am really excited about where this is going. This series does not start out slow, from the get go it is moving forward. Some people might like a slow build, but I love the pace that the author is setting in this RH series!

The story pulls you in the further you get in the book. A lot happens in this. I love how it builds up and how Mel grows. I wish there were more interactions and back stories to Mel's coven though. Hopefully we get to find out in the next book.

Interesting read

This book started out kind of great. Then I began to lose interest. It might have been me as I got inturupted a lot reading the book. There are a lot of people to follow abd I don't feel like I really got to know most of them. You could have swapped just about any of the names and it wouldn't have made a difference. I love her take on vampires and how they work with the covens. I think Mel is interesting. She grows a lot and changes a lot throughout the story.

Editing was pretty good. However there are no line breaks in the dialog. So you'll have a paragraph with two or more people talking and I'm not always sure who's saying what. I think that's cause a bit if the disconnect with the characters.

Ready for more

I enjoyed this very much. I love reverse harem style books. I am hoping that she has more intimate moments with the other members of her coven. At least the first 5. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book.

I was gifted this book by a friend.

Holy Hells Bells. Paranormal is my go-to genre. I am a huge fan of Brandy’s contemporary so when I saw she has a paranormal, I was stoked!! Then to find out it’s a REVERSE HAREM…shut the front door. But then to see she has a fresh spin on covens, mates and harems…..holy multi-level happiness points for me.

Mel is just existing in life. She works at a bar with Theo and just gets up, works and goes to bed. No real excitement other then her cat. When she meets a few amazingly hot guys and they also think she is pretty great she is so happy to finally FEEL like a member of something….I mean the fangs have got to be the drugs talking right????

When Mel invites Liam to “stay the night” everything changes in her life. She finds out that Vampires are real and she is the magic glue, so to speak, this coven has been looking for. She is their “lady”. She is the life essence for them and they for her. What I loved is that even though this is a harem she is not mated to every guy. Does she love them? Yes! Does she want to protect them? Yes, but she only has a true mating with some of the vampires through the story.

Mel and her coven are watching the news when they see some other covens are being slaughtered by some bad, humans. The story then begins to turn and we see the weak human Mel become the strong protector and vampire leader for her coven.

There are a lot of twists and turns plus some sexy times between Mel and her Mates but the I loved the new and fresh take on the vampire/RH/Coven storyline. Vampires are hard to find a new fresh take on and I think this was done fabulously!!!

I am seriously bummed I can’t sit and read book 2 all day tomorrow because the book ends with Mel and her guys going to help someone else

I was hooked from the first chapter. There was action and romance and then the Twist with Theo. I was kind of upset that the situation mentioning him was not discussed more, but other than that I loved the book <3 Cant wait to read #2.

I LOVE IT

Mel hates being alone. She works constantly to fill the void and keep the noises in her head at bay. Then she meets Liam and the guys and her life is turned upside-down. There's action, sex, and love. And hot vampires. Very hot vampires.

There are a few mistakes in this book, but nothing bad. The beginning seemed jumbled to me but that might just be me. But once you get into the story, it's fantastic. I can't wait for the next installment!

I had a very peculiar feeling while reading the book. It was as if I was watching from afar and could not help. The story was written in a way that does not include you, you are just a silent observer. It is difficult to explain and I am not sure this was done intentionally, maybe this is just this author's style but it worked quite well.

The only other thing I noticed and was not particularly happy about was that she agreed to become the lady of the coven too soon. I wanted her to have more questions and reservations. It did not feel natural. Other than that, this is a great story!

to be completely honest. I couldnt finish this book. I got a little over half way through and felt like I was forcing myself to read it. Normally I will finish a book even if its bad because Im the kind of person that needs closure.. but this book? Couldnt even do it. Didnt care how it ended. Was NOT for me at all. The Female lead drove me nuts and I couldnt even pinpoint what it was. Just everything about her. Couldnt connect I guess.

DNF at 11%. This book has a sort of surreal quality to it that I'm just not into. The MC has a real go-with-the-flow attitude toward the guys she meets, and it isn't really explained. This is especially weird since she doesn't seem to be a people person. There's just not much of an explanation for what's going on, yet the MC either doesn't notice or doesnt care. Either way, there's not much here that makes me want to keep reading.

Poorly written

Even though the storyline was interesting, the writing was just bad. I didn't connect to any of the characters and did not feel the bond between Mel and any of her coven. On top of that, none of the guys had any personality at all. I will not be continuing this series.

I liked the concept of the book but the relationships were rushed and at times superficial. In general, the book had limited romantic tension/progression. The characters also needed more development. They were introduced so quickly, that it is impossible really know who they are or to connect with them. Especially since there are so many different people.

I cant believe it took me this long to find Of Death and Darkness! I can honestly say this book is now one of my new favourites! Especially since it is a reverse Harem, yay!

So this story follows Mel who's always felt a little out of place, not to mention the near constant buzzing she hears in her head. That is until she meets a group of men, and suddenly the buzzing has disappeared.

The men she is introduced to are Liam, Kristian, Asher, Josh and Kyle; these men are not like the others, they have a secret. I think because it's in the beginning of the book, its not too much of a spoiler but they are vampires, insanely hot ones. Mel has a very strong connection to them all, but even more so than the others, is Liam. Her relationship with him through the whole book is absolutely perfect, he was everything that she needed and more.

The story follows Mel along her path with the coven, and how their race is constantly battling a society called The resistance, who have recently become determined to eliminate them rather than just keep them away from humans. Things are turning from bad to worse but Mel's every growing coven is up for the challenge. There are some heartbreaking scenes but also some scenes where you just want to fist pump and cheer on Mel and the covens.

I loved reading about the progression of Mel's character, she just took the experience by the horns and went with it, she went through these experiences like a regular person would and i loved that we saw her growth. Especially seeing her towards the end where she just went total badass mode! i was internally cheering her on the whole time!

Along the way they meet Killian, Ryker and Pheonix, who all bring really interesting and unique characteristics to the group. Each one of them is entirely an individual and i would absolutely steal any of them given the chance. However, if i had to pick my favourite, it would be Ryker, i'm a sucker for the intensity.
We also meet the other men who join the coven and who are also deeply important to Mel; i liked that there was no jealousy from the mated few when there were some less than platonic scenes with some other men in the coven. Beyond that, their devotion to Mel was so touching, it made me cry in a couple of scenes.

I love that even though there are other women in the story they aren't the source of any drama for the group; i think it was awesome that Dru, Mel and Amberly all genuinely had a friendship and didn't get petty.

I love the writing, it follow and was really emotive! i love when you read a book and it makes you feel everything that the characters do. Its a truly beautiful experience.
Everything about this plot is perfect and i would not change a single thing about it!
All i need now is the second one!! please can i have it now?!?!?!?!?!?

Erm, Wow! I didn't think I was going to like or enjoy this book as the beginning was a little slow and hard to get into, but I persevered and ended up loving and really enjoying it. I think that this is the authors first book, and I do generally tend to find that an author's very first book can be a bit slow getting into, but the pace tends to pick up, and Of Death and Darkness did.

This is a reverse harem novel, which is the main reason I decided to pick it up to read in the first place. The main character is Mel and I think this first book in the series is about building her harem, the world she is in and the characters in her life, both friend and foe. The first half of the book is about Mel discovering who she is and adjusting to the new world she's been pulled into. The second half is where the action really kicks in and the overall story arc starts to develop to lead us into other books in the series.

Despite the slow start I'm giving this book five stars. I really enjoyed it, liked the characters and their development and thought it was also well edited, not just for grammar and punctuation but for story content too. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series and unravelling some of the mysteries. I would recommend this book to reverse harem fans, paranormal readers and those who are fans of vampires for a new take on a vampire story.
