My daughter has struggled with her reading. She's a little behind others in her year. As an author mom, and someone who adored books as a young girl, I really wanted her to find her love of reading but at the same time didn't want to force it.

So, we decided to buy her first non-picture book. We took a trip to Waterstones and spent a long time browsing the kids book shelves. Very little caught her eye. Roald Dahl just didn't hold her interest. She picked up some books about aliens, My little Pony, but nothing really spoke to her enough. I wondered if she just wasn't a reader.

And then I spotted Mirror Magic. Firstly, the colors and illustrations are adorable. Immediately my daughter was drawn to the girl pictured on the front (it helps that her favorite animal is a fox). "Read the back," I told her. "And see if it's something you'd like to continue with."

She read the blurb.
She then read the first page. "Yes," she decided. "This is the one."

She hasn't stopped reading it since. Not during lunch, not while we watched some TV in the evening, now while we ate dinner. I poked my head into her room last night and she was still reading it, long after her little sister had gone to sleep.

Personally, I haven't read it, but I've been told I have to wait until she's finished.

Thank you, Sarah Chapman, for your gift of stories to a little girl who looks as though she just may have discovered her love of reading.

This book was so insipid that I stopped reading it as a bedtime book with my 8 year old daughter and gave it to her to read on her own. It's perfect for young readers who like fantasy, magic, animals, etc. and no harsh realism. The main characters are three girls who have magical animals choose them as partners to save the world from dark magical forces. The girls are supposed to be in sixth grade but they honestly feel more like kindergarten kids to me. It's all fairy tale stuff in the most G-rated, fantasy sort of way, exactly the sort of world that some very young girls (not to be sexist I'll add boys, but it's clearly marketed towards little girls) would think was perfect. Black and white illustrations complement the text. This series isn't going to win any writing awards but it's probably a good way to get some young kids reading.

I viewed a digital ARC of this book for review.

4.75 ⭐️

I have so much to say about this book and now it’s finally time 😁😁😁!!

So let’s get started ———>

The plot felt like it was a dystopian book but in a fantasy way, i mean like, with dystopian books they try to break down the government, right? But in this one, the animals and star friends are trying to break down the spooky creatures that makes the people emotionless. Pretty much the same kind of concept, right?

I enjoyed every single moment it in, and the fact that it was done in a PG kind of way makes it ♾️ times better, the magic system was simple but it feels magical, and i really love it 🥰.

I really love the characters, Mia was really good, but at the beginning she was a bit annoying, but you know, main characters 😏.

Violet in the beginning deserves better, but at the end i love her, i always loved the smart reader girl characters in books so much, i mean like, think about Hermione from Harry Potter for example.

I love Sita, she’s so loyal and kind to alot of characters, there’s definitely a reason why she has healing powers, best and favorite character of this series 😊.

And Lexi, she kinda annoys me every time she and Violet were talking, but she got better in the end so i liked her.

The other characters were really good too, Cleo does annoy me a bit, but at the end she’s a really good character.

Overall, i really loved this book and i would love to continue this series, it was done really well and it was such a fun book.

That’s all

Thanks for reading this!!

Meine Meinung:

You mean to tell me the characters are in 6th grade?! I adoored this book until that notion. Dear author. Please go to school, spend a week in 6th grade classes. Or even better, try to observe them outside of school. This is not what 6th graders do, this is not how they think or act. Its not about personality but about development level of 6th graders. They are way more developed - smarter, more experienced, closer to YA than to childhood.

Otherwise it's a magical story about Star Friends who came to help to perform miracles to make the world a better place. Meanwhile teaching about differences between people and friendship and family.

Too sweet and saccharine for my tastes. It felt like someone tried to cast an adventure film with Precious Moments figurines. Not for me, but others clearly adored it.

This is a cute, clean read for younger readers.

Are you a young girl? Do you like magic? Animals? Friendships? Then, this is going to be your next favorite novel!

Maia and her friends discover magical talents, make friends with talking animals, and go around saving the world. As an older reader, it was all rather shallow, involving sudden, wonderous magical abilities and quick, miraculous solutions. The characters also felt young for Year Six. Admittedly, as an American, I have no idea how old that is. I get the feeling it’s older than second or third grade, though, which was how old Maia and her friends behaved.
Younger girls will love every minute of it. The adventures, the magical animals, the friendships, the suspense. The pictures, characters, and content are prefect for young readers, as well.
In addition to the magic, there’s an interesting friendship twist as well. Ionie is a mean girl that Maia discovers is really just lonely. Maia is far from heroic in her behavior towards Ionie. Constantly looks for excuses why she can’t include her, and not behaving any differently towards her even after hearing that she desperately needs a friend. I would’ve loved to see them become her friend.
I can only hope the next 12 books in the series make up for this.

This is a middle-grade, early reader book, and the start to a new series. We have star animals who need star friends (humans) to pair up with to help stop the spread of dark magic. The introductions are pretty hokey and typical of books written for this age group. However I was surprised that near the end things get a bit darker than I expected. It's very predictable who and how this will end. On page 10 before we even know about magic you'll be able to pick out who the 'savior' is gonna be. But that doesn't dissuade me from thinking there can be some great future stories here.

Definitely the kind of book/series that could get children loving reading. I'm going to get this one for my 7-year-old niece for sure as I love the itsy bit of darkness in the end and the friendship of the girls is even and well done.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.

MEINE MEINUNG:
Glaubst du an Magie?

Overall rating is barely a 2.5. I had a hard time getting through the first 3/4 of the book. Several times I considered DNF’ing it, but I trudged along trying to give this story and author a fair chance. Although the plot was fine, the dialogue between animals and humans was just not believable, and was plain and too straightforward. The last 1/4 of the book was a vast improvement and it read rather quickly. Overall, would I read this book again? Nope. I would say the target audience for this book is definitely young readers new to fiction and chapter books.

Cover:

My 7 and 8 year old loved this book. My daughter is easily put off by books with too much discord or tension, and this book had very little of either. For the most part, it was a story about best friends discovering that they were Star Friends and could do magic with their new animal friends. This made it a great story to read before bed.

This is definitely a book for younger readers. Even though the characters are in 6th grade, they behave more like elementary kids. I think kids 10+ would be bored with this story. But my kiddos loved it, so now we have to figure out how to get the next book since it isn't available at the library.

This book was really incredible my daughter is special-needs and she cannot read on her own so every night I read a chapter from this book and from the very beginning she was completely enthralled with the characters. She really was drawn in to the descriptive words and the drawings that were within the book. She loved the drawing on the front the colors everything about the characters and the description it just drew her in and wanted her to know more and wanted me to not stop reading. She was so excited when the next book arrived on March 6 and so we started immediately on book 2. I completely recommend this series!!
