Even scales can’t protect a broken heart. But can they heal one? Jess Barnes was a rising star in the Information Ministry before she and her crewmates were kidnapped by Xaravian barbarians. She longs for her old life and friends. She can also live without bounty hunters chasing her down in every part of the universe. When one poisons her, Jess is in a race against time to find a cure for the odd condition that sets her heart racing —made worse by the attention of deliciously good looking second-in-command Trazzak.

Trazzak likes order and rules, but Jessalyn brings total chaos to his life and the Galaxos, with bounty hunters and Alliance spies right behind her. When he starts to uncover the many secrets Jess has buried, Trazzak wonders if he should turn her in for betraying the rebellion... or get a lot closer to find out what else she’s hiding.

Jess doesn’t know who to trust, and hardly even trusts herself as she battles bounty hunters, arms dealers, and the poison in her blood. When the Alliance offers her the antidote and her old life back — in exchange for betraying her crewmates, the Xaravians, and the entire rebellion — what will Jess choose? The Alliance and the safety of the past? Or Trazzak and the dizzying uncertainty of love?

I remember when I sat down to start Vrix that I had been so hyped to read Vrix's and Griggs' story, but ended up a little disappointed. Their story didn't live up to what I was expecting and I wasn't too interested in the storyline.

Trazzak, however, was a completely different experience. I don't think I was expecting the pairing of Jess and Trazzak, but they were perfect together. I loved how much Trazzak craved rules and order, while Jess still worked in the shadows as a former information officer (let's be honest ... she was a spy). Both characters were very well-formed and their storylines were so intriguing to me. I felt so invested in that plot and that connection often had my heart breaking for Jess. There was a lot of emotion and turmoil that I thought was missing from Vrix.

As much as I loved this book, however, I do wish there was more interaction between Trazzak and Jess, and less fighting. A good portion of the book had Trazzak suspicious and angry at Jess rather than trying to work things out.

The biggest issue that I had with this book (come to think of it, this may have happened in the previous two books as well) is how often there are inconsistencies. In one chapter, Jess was thinking about the Ministry giving her a chance to send a message to her nieces and nephews. In another, she's telling Trazzak that she doesn't have any family other than her crewmates. Or someone will pick something up twice within paragraphs - without ever having put it down. These are little inconsistencies that happen occasionally, but have been present in every book ... and it drives me nuts when I come upon them!

I am thoroughly enjoying this series of stories of the expanding fleet of the Xaravians. It continues the world building started in book one. They were on the ship, Argo, then. Captained by a corrupt crew led by a Captain Wurtz. He sold the females in his crew and was an all around evil guy. Now in Book 3, two of the Earth girls who helped run the Argo are now married to Xaravian officers: the Captain Vaant, and Navigator Vrix. We discovered in a previous book that Jessalyn Barnes was a spy for the Alliance, an Intelligence Officer. Now she is just a member of the crew.

They stop off at a Spaceport and Jessalyn has been told to meet a fellow Information Officer and former lover, Nathan. He shows her the huge bounty on her head, dead or alive put out by the Alliance. He says he can get the bounty removed if she obtain the plans for a new defensive/offensive weapon that would be unbeatable for any who possessed it. She wants all of her teammates bounties also removed as well as those on the Xaravians. As she heads back to the ship she is attacked by 3 bounty hunters. She kills two, but before she can kill the third he slices into her leg with a poisoned blade. Once back on board the Galaxos, she becomes deathly ill. The doctors wash her blood several times, but the combination of poisons keep making her survival less likely.

Suddenly they are attacked by a fast highly maneuverable cutter from the Xerxh. It was a Xerxh who sliced her with the poison blade. Jess sneaks out of sickbay to the control room and mans the communications station. The Xerxh won't answer their hails, but Jess speaks to them in their language and eventually respond. Vaant, Vrix, Trazzak, second in command, are all watching her closely. She tells them she is interrupting their internal communications. She tells them that pirates and bounty hunters mainly use those fast ships. Vaant, the captain, is furious and wants to know if this attack is Jess's doing? His scales reveal the mood of the Xaravians. His are now dark red, purple bordering on black! She altered her voice and pretended to be another ship coming to their rescue. Their own other larger ship the Heisenberg was still being refitted. It bought them enough time to reinforce their shields. Jess kept disrupting their internal communications trying to create as much chaos as possible. She didn't see Trazzak give weapons control to Vrix.

Dr. Maisy and Trazzak approached Jess from behind. Jess told them to get lost she was busy. The ship jerked and Jess fell to the floor. Trazzak said "THAT'S IT!" He picked up Jess and hauled her back to sick bay. Soon the Heisenberg appeared and the cutter backed off. The crew of the Galaxos captured the ship and her crew. Trazzak took over as captain of the new ship . He thought her a beauty and was thrilled that they could now add her to their growing fleet of ships.

The book continues to be exciting throughout, with treachery and betrayal. We find out that Trazzak knew she was an Information Officer, at least at one time, as he was trained as one too, but left. Trazzak is increasingly interested in Jess and she with him. We get our HEA at the end.

I stayed up much too late reading this great adventure. I look forward to the next story in the series.
Well Done Layla Nash and Juno Wells! 5 SUPER STARS!!

Shut the front door. This was goooood
I thought 1 and 2 was good. but book 3...a lot more intrigue, espionage and mystery. thr romance took a back seat on this one. although it was steamy and a slow burn. again we have a heroine thst kicks butt and Jess is definitely up there with griggs. she gave the alpha hero what for on a lot of topics. the only drawback in this book is the stubbornness of the heroine, it just seemed to go on a tad too long and got me frustrated.
the dilemma she's facing on both accounts is definitely angsty and had me on the edge of my seat. this story was a test of trust, loyalty and love.
the hero was written as intensely streamlined leaning toward stoicism. he was not as apt as the previous alphas in figuring out the earthers but the plotline didn't exactly allow him to. it moved at a great pace and kept me listening...once the story moved past the frustrated bit. heaps of twists and turns and lots, I mean lots of betrayal. it was so well put together and all loose ends tied up. for this book anyway.
Rachel Music is so good and she brings these characters to life through my ears.

Jess was the spy on her ship before all the women got sold to the Xaravians and the Galaxos. She's been trying to hide her background ever since, even though some of her friends know. Trazzak knows there is something about her, mostly because he went through the same training by the same people as she did. That means he's finally able to figure it out, after she had to meet an old contact who tried to force her into having to do one more job for the ministry and after she was poisoned by bounty hunters.

Jess and Trazzak go through a lot of rocky road, distrust, and betrayal, as well as near death while their relationship builds. I love their story, but one of the things I like the most is that they spend time getting to know each other and building a relationship. Trazzak really spends time wooing Jess and building up what they want, which is nice, much more realistic.

I've enjoyed all the books in this series and really wish that they would hurry up and write the next one!

I spy, you spy

Trazzak likes order in everything and to follow the rules. Well Jessalyn is completely opposite. She had to learn to adapt with everything and everyone around her as an intelligence officer. As the Ministry looks for her, Trazzak and Jess are surrounded by doubts, mistrust, and cannot seem to catch a break. They both are pushed and pulled in all directions not knowing what the other feels or if they can even trust each other. The story was definitely a slow build with lots of mystery, spies, and traitorous acts from both the Alliance and the Rebels. To me, it didn’t feel like a real connection between the two of them at least in the way it was written. It felt more like it was forced because of their pasts being similar. Overall, not bad but I will admit I skimmed a lot of pages that just felt like unnecessary “fluff”.

Best in the Series!!

Jess and Trazzak have incredible chemistry and both so stubborn about it. It has big Pride and Prejudice vibes.

This is two spies dancing around each other and falling in love. It has the best plot in the series so far. The romance supports the plot, instead of the other way around. We get a lot more world building and political intrigue in this one. I was on the fence about continuing the series but I'm so glad I did. It has plenty of action and intrigue, as well as a believable, slow-burn romance plot.

The spice in this one is EXCELLENT. Everything out of Trazzak's mouth is simply panty dropping.

More and more of the world becomes clear as the books continue. I maintain that they read like television episodes, and are even paced as such. This installment felt a little weaker. The relationship was difficult to believe, with sudden emotions taking over and 180-degree reactions. I understood each character's perspective, but this is the first book where I felt they were kinda forced together for the purpose of the story. Maybe a reread will change my mind. At any rate, I am still loving the world and look forward to the next book!!!

I’m sorry??? What? The minute something bad happens he immediately blames it on Jess. No facts no evidence. Just speculation and tells everyone that she did it. And when it comes out she didn’t HE NEVER EVEN APOLOGIZES. And this happened even after he wanted her as a mate. After that it was just a constant I want you, you’re a traitor, let’s fly off into the sunset, you betrayed us, and on and on. It wasn’t until the literal last few paragraphs of the last chapter that he apologized. He was just a big fat asshole

I wanted to read all of this series. I really did. But I just couldn't get through this book or the 4th without skipping on ahead. I ended up just skimming over them as they just seem to fall flat and sex scenes got weak and non exciting. The flare of "joining" was basically sucked out of 3 and 4. The first two weren't bad... but the interest dropped in 3 and 4.

Trazzak and Jessalynn started off good but then it went down hill for a little bit it the middle. At one point I definitely call Trazzak an ass. As readers we see both sides to the story so we understand, but what he said to her was super harsh. I’m glad they overcame that obstacle to find their happily ever after.

This made for a decent read. I don't think it was worth the $3.99 I paid for it though. It was a pretty typical alien sci-fi romance that I found to be overly predictable. I'll still check out some of this writers other work though.

I truly like this series

Kayla Nash knows how to spin a tale worth reading a time or ten. Her characters are relatable and very real. I get mad when I have to stop reading to gat some sleep, that's how into the story I get.

By book 3 it became obvious that all heroines of these series are "I'm kick-ass I don't need a man" type of women, which is not my thing and I dropped these series at this point.
But I must say Trazzak's character was refreshing to read!))) He's a toxic grumpy man and somehow i enjoyed it.

I voluntarily read and review this ARC I wasn't compensated in any way with that being said I really enjoyed this fast paced story. It was jammed packed with lots of action twists and turns that you didn't even see coming. However there were some confusing part that I couldn't comprehend since I hadn't read book one or two in the series. Overall this was entertaining read.

Wow! What a ride of emotions with so many twists and turns? This book has everything you want in a book, love, betrayal, passion, and steamy love scenes with awesome characters? Love when the other characters from previous books are also there; it feels like you are keeping up with old friends. A must buy and keep them coming because they are awesome.

In space there is nothing to cling to if things go down hill fast. As a man on a mission and a woman trying to find a way back they both learn there are far bigger thing going on around them than they anticipated. The stakes just got deadly as they both try to find a way out of it alive. They find it just might go deeper than either of them was prepared for both working and personally.
Loved the story but really intense. 4.5 round-up. I voluntarily received a complimentary copy for an honest review. This has been a great series to read can't wait to read what they have in store next.

ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
Great Read!
Jess was just trying to survive, but she did not know who she could trust.
There was a bounty on her head.
Trazzak did not know what it was about Jess that attracted her to him.
But when dangers comes, he is ready to protect Jess at all cost.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. Jess and Trazzak made a good couple, and I enjoyed following their story as they fell in love and dealt with everything that was going on around them. I also liked that Jess was the one with bounty hunters after her and had been poisoned. I don't know why, I just like when that's the female character for some reason. Overall, there was a good balance of romance and action. There were some things that bothered me that I would have preferred went differently, but overall a good book. I was gifted a copy.

Interesting Characters

How comparable to governments, religion or big businesses that have complete power. "Complete power completely corrupts."
Freedom Fighters and they're conquest for the right is a good read.
