(I review as I read!)

I really like the writing style. The bit of history was also enlightening.

I’m so displeased That the Scottish jewels were given to an old, frail couple to protect. The beginning went on and on with repetitive thoughts from both h/h.. was almost tiring. However after the first 4/5 chapters the repetitions reduced and it was easier to settle in.

I liked how the “relationship” between them came to be. Their first kiss and how he asked her to follow him to Inverness. I don’t know how the author weaved it so smoothly but... great job Anna!!

Not sure I really like the fact that about 50% of the book is about the H/H musing about their attraction to each other... a lot of it was really sweet to read but other times I just wanted to see something else. Also didn’t relish reading about their sexual moment. It was too crude, especially for Hannah that was meant to be a novice.

When the suspense came, I welcomed it with open arms! It was so jarring.

While I know little of war I didn’t expect Glenheath’s men to be imprisoned after surrendering! If I’d known I wouldn’t have cheered the idea of the laying down their sword in hopes of an independent Scotland in future. I thought they’d all live happily ever after after the surrender (heart break).

All in all, it was a lovely read!

Highland Betrayal is book one in The House of Pendray series by Anna Markland. I absolutely loved it! I think I fell in love with the hero Morgan Pendray who serves in the English Parliamentary army. He is a man of strength and integrity. An Alpha male with compassion. The heroine Hannah Kincaid is likable and at times feisty.
“She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. As long as she lived she’d never forget the vision of him emerging from the water like a powerful sea-god, the wet linen clinging to his thighs, his maleness…”
Markland is a true historian. She weaves actual events into her stories and she has done so here as well. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Will Hannah and Morgan find each other when they are separated by warring armies in motion?

SETTING: Fortress of Dùn Fhoithear, Scotland, Interregnum. The Royalists are fighting in defense of the Fortess of Dùn Fhoithear against Oliver Crowell’s army. A Royalist spy, Hannah Kincaid, pretending to gather crabs and seaweed alongside the seaside of the castle, received the Scottish Crown Jewels and secrets them in her basket. As she leaves, she sees (and is seen by) the captain of the artillary, who assumes she is just gathering items from the seacoast. They are close enough to gain a fair look at each other, so that when they next meet they recognize each other. By that point, the fortress had fallen, the Jewels could not be found, and Captain Morgan Pendray begins to suspect the woman of having made off with them. Were it to be made known he saw her, did not stop her, then the Captain would face severe punishment, as the capture of the Jewels was an obsession with Cromwell.
An accident severely injures the Captain’s batman, and Hannah, seemingly a camp follower, volunteers to aid the youth, preventing a needless amputation by a drunken surgeon. Thus, Morgan and Hannah begin their association. What follows is a wonderful story built on the skeleton of the history of that time, with the hardships and heartaches that come from 2 people on opposite sides of the same conflict, with the additional aspect of Hannah being a spy, always in danger of being exposed as such.

CRITIQUE: EXCELLENT storyline, with accurate historical details, and realistic human interactions. One is swept right into the flow of the story, and navigates the rapids with the characters. As I had previously read “The Kingslayer’s Daughter” and “The Jewel”, I enjoyed reading this, the backstory to both of these books. Once again, I am impressed with the skill with which Ms. Markland weaves history into her story, which makes it so much more rewarding to the reader. I highly recommend this book to lovers of history and Historical Romance, and to any who just enjoy a good story. (Would recommend a mature audience.)

very pleasant read = 3.5 stars, rounded up because of historical notes

I have to like a book that lists the date of the first chapter as "Fortress of Dun Fhoithear, Scotland, Interegnum". Not because I am especially interested in this time period but because I appreciate an author who knows what it is and thinks her readers are capable of knowing too. A few time specific things were explained but a great deal were just discussed as if we know what they are. I really dislike when one character explains to another, only for the readers benefit, what they would simply have known by virtue of living at the time in question. So having the author assume I either know it or can look it up is much appreciated. That one single thing made me enjoy this book more than I might have otherwise.

The story itself was pretty simple. Scottish noblewoman Hannah is acting as a laundress following the Cromwell's English army while actually being a spy for the Scottish royalists. Morgan is a welsh man in the Army who spots her doing something he later realises was likely treason. He ends up keeping her secret for his own reasons. I actually bought into that fairly easily. The two of them fall for each other while neither confides in the other what they know or think they know. Each of them also has to keep up with their regular activities even though much has changed. And of course there has to be some more spying and more army action. Even with all that it was pretty low angst. I liked both characters and was happy to see them together. There was a bit of humour too. There were some unbelievable moments but by the time they came along I mostly was not bothered. A happy ending plus decent historical notes explaining where Ms. Markland chose to take historical liberties was appreciated. I will likely check her out again.

Morgan Pendray and Hannah Kincaid's story is a superb read. It was so good, I finished it within a day. He is a Welshman who is in charge of the English Arny's large weaponry division. While on a mission he sees from a far a woman who appears to be carrying a basket. She intrigues him and their paths cross again. There is something about her that he can't stop wondering about her but he has a job to do. Hannah is a Highland spy who is completing her own mission. She is securing something truly important. She crosses paths with a man who just with a look rattles her.

An intriguing story sure to make you enthralled with the characters and exceptional plot.

A lovely romance set in turbulent history ims

Anna Markland writes romances which are well researched, while weaving fictional characters into the pages of history. Historical facts are brought to life so the reader gets a feel not only for the period, but also for the struggles and losses that the rebels faced. The romance does not take second place in this story and the couple’s bond is palpable from almost the first glance. A beautiful romance that literally blossoms as the pages turn.

I listened to an Audiobook of Highland Betrayal. I can honestly say that it is the best book that I have read/listened to this year. The author, Anna Markland, weaves a beautiful story of love between two opposing sides in a war. The narration by Greg Patmore further enhances the story. Between Markland's gifted writing and Patmore's narration the story of Morgan Pendray and Hannah Kincaid is brought to vivid life. I almost felt like I was a spectator watching the story unfold. Magnificent.

Hidden Jewels

I enjoyed reading about Hannah and Morgan. From when they first saw each other, while she was walking on the shore and he was preparing to fire the cannon on the castle.

Hannah Kincade is a very brave Scottish lass who is playing a very dangerous role. That role sees her right into the arms of the enemy.
The English army serving Oliver Cromwell are searching for the crown jewels of Scotland, and have laid siege to the castle they believe holds them.
Captain Morgan Pendray is in charge of the cannon that is going to put an end to the siege. He is a Welshman serving in the English army and fighting the Scots. His loyalties will be severely tested.
A marvellous story set in a period that I have never read about before. I always love the way this author can transport me into whichever time her stories are set. The lives, loves and hardships are all so easy to believe. The little details , like transporting heavy cannons in the highlands are fascinating. I loved every page.

A suspenseful story of a Highland lass spying for Scotland who becomes involved with a Welsh soldier fighting for the English. Anna Markland does an amazing job of making this a very believable tale with incredible historical details. The realism doesn't end there, it is creditably told not only in the historic sense but also in the relationship between the characters. Feelings build over time and with actions, not just words. As this fascinating story unfolds, I was completely drawn in to this compelling novel. I have enjoyed Anna Markland's work in the past and will continue to do so.

What an intriguing book. In reading this book, I dont feel like it was the normal sweep you off your feet kind of romance. And during turbulent times, I can imagine that a scenario similar to this may have occurred in some fashion. The heroin was quite enjoyable, she was strong and in no way week except for the wiles of a handsome officer. But her strength and courage are commendable. The hero, was portrayed well. Strong, good at what he did as a soldier. His struggle between right and wrong were understandable and truly in such treacherous times it was a slippery slope. At first I thought the story started a little slow, but truly after the first few pages I was hooked and it was a page turner. There were a few twists in the story that I didnt see coming. The history played into the story was awesome. Also, the developing relationship between the H/H was enjoying to see unfold. The steamy scenes in the book were well written, they were very hot scenes to be exact. A very intriguing read with some great writing and steamy H/H to add flavor!!!

What an amazing audiobook! Greg Patmore, the narrator, made me feel I was watching the story unfold and really held my interest! This is a story of Hannah, a Scottish Spy who follows the drum with the English who are invading her lands. She absconds with important heirlooms to the Scots and tries to hide her identity. Morgan, a welsch soldier in the British army struggles to make the right decisions in this war against the Scots. When he sees Hannah, all thoughts are lost as he forms strong emotions toward her. This story is set during times that are part of history and Anna Markland makes you feel part of the story with the conflicts and emotions that develop between Morgan and Hannah, who should be enemies. You will enjoy listening to this story and not want to "pause" it for a moment!! I received this audiobook for free to listen and offer a review. But I did purchase the ebook also!
