Devon Cream
When Steven helps his neighbor Devon move into the studio apartment upstairs, he can't help but drool. And that's all. Devon is straight and totally off limits. Knowing, though, doesn't stop the desire Steven fights every time the two men are together, which is a lot since Steven has decided to take Devon under his wing until the young man can get his life together.

There are a few authors that are on my automatic buy list. Jet Mykles is one of them. I know when I buy a book written by her, I am guaranteed I will be getting hours of entertainment. Her books always have a place on my keeper shelf, and are stories I fall back on when I want to re-read a great romance.
Steven is a caretaker at heart. At 31, he is climbing the success ladder as a chef (he calls himself a cook), has many friends and is pretty content with his life. Often being accused of having "Mother Hen" tendacies, when he hears a loud crash outside of his apartment, of course, he has to investigate the cause, and do what he can to help out. What he doesn't expect is catching a younger man having an emotional moment as he struggles to move his things into the apartment above him. Alone.
Steven immediately knows he is in trouble. Not only does the man have a face of an angel, and a body made for sin, he is younger and obviously straight. But, being unable to shake his nurturing instincts aside, he not only helps his new friend, Devon, he immediately takes him under his wing.
Devon has never really been out on his own. He has moved from a small town, and is ready to start a new life. At 22, he works at a job he really doesn't like, and has usually done things that have been expected from him all his life. When he meets Steven, and is taken in by him, he is overwhelmed by Steven's kindness and willingness to help him out... whenever he needs support in any way.
I loved this story! I liked how Steven and Devon's relationship progressed from friends to lovers. Under Steven's example, Devon grows from a boy to a man, and a good man at that. Watching them support one another and look out for the other's best interest made me care about them and cheer their relationship on. Both Steven and Devon are people that are easy to relate too, and someone I would be proud to call a friend. I loved both of them, and I hated to see their story come to an end.

The more I read Jet Mykles books the more I like them. I really thought that Steven and Devon had a connection, and both were believable as a couple. I know the "Gay for You" theme isn't always well liked, but I love it. Jet is the master of it.

Cute, easy and fun.
Steven is a cook, a care-taker, a fixer, and he finds the perfect guy for all his talents in Devon.
Devon's parents moved him out and he's on his own and it's not easy for him, Steven steps in, feeds him regularly, lends him money and his car and even wakes him up at 3 in the morning so he's not late for his job.
Now before you think Steven is a saint and Devon is a loser who is using and smooching, I have to say that first, Steven is totally enamored and in lust with the younger and exceedingly cute Devon, and ( this part was important for me ) when Steven is overworked and stressed, Devon totally steps up to the plate and takes care of Steven without being asked, without telling Steven or even wanting acknowledgment.
Of course there is that little, inconsequential problem, Devon is straight...right?

Ms Mykles has pulled off another coup with this wonderful friends to lovers story.
Steven is a 31 year old chef who is climbing the ladder to success but his success with men stinks. He and his best friend and neighbor, Patty, are just getting ready to sit down to dinner when they hear a crash outside the door to Steven's apartment. Steven rushes out and to his surprise sees a beautiful young man, Devon, putting his belongings into a moving box. Patty and Steven set dinner aside and help Devon get moved into his studio apartment. Steven is a self-admitted Mother Hen and instantly takes the 21 year old "straight" Devon under his wing. Dinner at Steven's apartment become a nightly affair with the unrestrained Patty grilling Devon mercilessly. Steven is hung up on Devon but will not make a move until one night he kisses Devon with drastic results. Steven resolves to keep their friendship strictly platonic until things start to change between the two men which totally throws Steven.
I loved the give and take dynamic between Steven and Devon. They are well fleshed out characters and so very likable. Patty is just hysterical and the perfect foil for Steven with her dry wit and sense of humor. The book has been called a gay for you story but I don't buy that. I believe that Devon was gay but just afraid to act on it. The sex scenes were well thought out in keeping a first timer in mind. I would recommend this wonderful story to anyone looking for a feel good book.

I’ll tell you why I chose this book. The cover. Look at that thing! I do have a preference for all things culinary so that too was a contributing factor.
So a guy moves into a building… sounds like a sitcom, huh? It kind of reminded me of one too with Patty being the crazy neighbor next door that has no boundaries and is all up in everyone’s business. Patty, I liked. She has no filter and says a few things that made me cringe, but I generally gravitate towards those big personality people. It’s not that I didn’t like Devon or Steven per se I just found them sort of sad.
Let’s start with Devon. Devon is a 22 year old “not gay” guy who can’t get himself out of bed on time to go to work without his mommy and mooches off Steven. He was failing his classes at college so his parents cut him off and, basically, told him it was time to grow up and move out. Steven is a 31 year old chef who hasn’t been in a relationship for 8 months and is immediately besotted with Devon, so he allows him to mooch and mothers him. I found this to be a bit depressing for a relationship’s beginnings; dripping with desperation. That coupled with the inexplicable focus on their “age difference” which, frankly, confounded me. When did 31 become over the hill?
The conflict in Devon Cream is pretty standard in the M/F genre. It’s rife with self-martyrdom and illogical reasoning i.e. I can’t be with you because #insert artificial rationale here#. However, I know many many people who enjoy this trope; so take my pickiness with a grain of salt.
My only other qualm is Steven being a chef. I love cooking and chefs. I’ve read many, many cookbooks, talked with chefs, etc. so I know being a chef is full-time job. It’s 18 hour+ days, getting up at 4 a.m. and bustin’ your ass in a kitchen for hours on end. Yet Steven is able to be home AND cook dinner for all of them every night?
The dialogue read authentic and organic. There are no egregious spelling or grammar errors. I liked the chef aspect and the GFY story arc. I think the time jumps facilitated the relationship nicely while also dodging the instalove plot device so many have trouble accepting myself included.
Devon Cream is more of 2.5 star read for me personally, but I don’t think the book’s overall rating should suffer because it’s not my cuppa which is why I’m giving it 3 stars.

Just a novella. Enjoyable enough and a VERY quick read, But.. No tension, No depth, only 3 and a bit characters. I wouldn't even consider this a 'feel good' book although of course it is HEA, definitely not worthy of a repeat read.

Steven Connolly is immediately smitten when he meets Devon Pavenic. Devon is a 22 year old young man on his own for the first time and he's moving into an apartment in the building Steven lives in. Due to his failing college classes his parents have kicked him out of the house and Steven, older by a few years and a nurturer at heart, decides to befriend and help him out.
Steven is 31 years old and a chef and loves to cook for others so it's only natural for him to invite Devon over for dinner. As the days go by he finds himself unable to resist taking care of Devon even though he is sure nothing can ever happen between them. After all, not only is Devon younger than him but he is also straight. As time passes Steven's attraction to Devon deepens and he finds himself doing all he can to make things easy for the younger man.
Steven and Devon's story is sweet, with the classic older man younger man combined with a Gay For You theme. Devon is sure when he meets Steven that he's not gay, he's never had thoughts for another man and he has been with women only. But as time goes on and their friendship grows stronger he finds himself growing attracted to Steven. When Steven is the one who needs help during a busy time Devon steps up to the plate and we see how he has matured from the boy he was at the beginning of the story to a man who's ready to have a real relationship with someone he's come to love.
This was a well written and enjoyable story. I liked Steven's character from the beginning and Devon kind of grew on me. At first his boyish, "I'm not gay" but I am helpless and need taking care of was not appealing to me but as I saw him come to care for Steven he redeemed himself. The only other characters in the book are Steven's best friend Patty, who was a bit annoying and his new boss which we meet briefly. Other than that the book centers solely on Steven and Devon and their journey from friends to lovers.

Short and sweet GFY story about an early thirties chef and a younger man on his own for the first time. Oh and the younger man thinks he's straight. As if! Nice sex, not very much but the book wasn't very long. Very enjoyable. Plus look at that ass on the cover. Dayum!

May 29, 2009I will not make this a rule, but usually Jet Mykles' characters are always paired with a very self-conscious man and another one that is cute, funny, maybe straight, or at least he believes so (Heaven, Faith...). In Devon Cream I found again that pair, but with some interesting differences.
Steven should be the self-conscious gay man, the one who has everything clear in his life. But Steven is also the mother-hen of the story, the man who can't help himself to help everyone around him, from feeding neighbors to collecting stray cats. Steven is a really nice man, and even if he is alone since eight months, he is not the type of man who I see alone for a long time. He is so nice and generous, that sooner or later someone will snatch him away. So Steven is not the male version of a spinster, he is not in desperate need of love, his love towards Devon is not as it was his last chance to happiness, and for this reason I read it as more sincere.
Devon is the young boy who moved upstair Steven's apartment. Devon is handsome, physically he is also more imposing than Steven, tall and muscular, but he has those puppy eyes that practically melt Steven's resistance. Devon is not used to live alone, he was kicked out from his parents house since he failed college, and now he has to take care of himself, a task that at first he is obviously not ready for. And so Steven starts to take care of him, and yes, maybe he exaggerates in doing so since he is infatuated of Devon. But the things are clear between them till the first day (thanks to his noisy other neighbor Patty): Steven is gay and instead Devon is straight, so no way that Steven could have his way with Devon.
Said that, I don't believe that this story could be classified as a 100% "gay for you" one; there is not tortured decision in Devon, not an almost painful realization... Devon is only really young, and he hasn't had any chance to "experiment", so he is really a "virgin" to love in absolute, both male than female (even if he is not "really" a virgin, mind you). Jet Mykles is really good in planning Devon's slow but sure path towards his adult life, and along the path we see Devon's changes: they are both physical (he blushes less, and he acquires a "feral" look, from puppy to wolf) than behavioral (he starts to do things before people tell him to do so).
Steven didn't set up a plan to seduce Devon, I really think his truly idea was to help a boy in need, but it's like putting a match near the straw, at the first spark the fire is uncontrollable. What I like of Steven is that he didn't hide his feelings, or at least he didn't do that to whom has eyes to see (since maybe, as I said, Devon is too young to read the signs); Steven likes Devon, and he almost accepts his caretaker task as a torment of Tantalus, having near something you can't reach. On the other side, there is no malice in Devon, he didn't parade himself around Steven to tease him, even if he parades and a lot!
This story is a funny sexy romp, the sex is good and just the right dose, Devon has the right dose of cuteness without being a female in a male body and Steven is a believable gay man without being flamboyant. Nice contrast in Devon being the pretty thing of the couple without having the physique du role, he is the taller and stronger in the couple.

I realized I hadn't yet read this and figured I could knock it out in a couple hours. I enjoy Jet's writing, so this was a treat, as always.
The title's main character Devon moves into the apartment building Steven lives in. Steven is gay but Patty is the one that tells every guy they met. Its a cute, quick story quirk that moves the pace only as its only about 100 pages.
I love seeing how the characters will fall for each other. This connection is no less grin worthy. From Devon's shy innocence to Steven's frustrations to being attracted to a straight man. The 'wake-up call' scene was classic!

I had previously tried another book by the author and had been rather disappointed by the style and rhythm of the story. However, "Devon Cream" was a very nice surprise. I imagine it has to do with the length of time passed between the two were written.
It was a pleasure to read this. There was no rush to the sex scenes, or a hasty description of the characters. I enjoyed the relaxed pace of the story and the subtle way in which the readers are introduced to the lives of two seemingly completely different men. [spoiler ahead]Devon was a bit tough to swallow at first, as I feared he would prove to be a leech, sponging off innocent Steven. Glad that wasn't the case. He proved that despite his age, he was capable of deep emotions, along with his gentle nature. Steven.. oh, how I enjoyed him! It was heart warming to see him careful around Devon, putting his feelings aside while still helping the youngster. I could not find him any flaws; he was simply endearing.[end spoiler]

2015 Re-read:
Such a cute story. Single perspective feels kind of rare in my recent readings but it works fine in this case.
I like the way Devon makes up his own mind and in a quiet but determined way won’t let Steven’s hang-ups get in the way of that. He has this interesting mix of youthfulness and growing into an adult going on.
Overall, while the ending has a stronger hint of HFN than HEA, it does make me optimistic about this relationship turning into something that lasts the way I want them to in romances.
There’s not much else I can think of to say, except that this is not at all subject to the usual yaoi leanings to be found in this author’s other m/m books. Except for the Gay For You theme, which in this case probably is not even an accurate classification.

Such a cute story. Single perspective feels kind of rare in my recent readings but it works fine in this case.
I like the way Devon makes up his own mind and in a quiet but determined way won’t let Steven’s hang-ups get in the way of that. He has this interesting mix of youthfulness and growing into an adult going on.
Overall, while the ending has a stronger hint of HFN than HEA, it does make me optimistic about this relationship turning into something that lasts the way I want them to in romances.

This story is about Steven Connolly, a 31 year old gay cook. Steven dreams of someday running his own kitchen. He lives in an apartment building. Across the hall is Patty, a self proclaimed "fag hag". The story begins the day Devon Pavenic, a 21 year old straight boy from a small town moves in. Devon has been sent away from home to make it on his own. Steven can't help but take pity on the puppy like Devon and offer him help. He helps him move in and then makes sure he eats, wakes up for work on time, has a car, can make his rent... just because. Patty thinks that Devon is taking advantage of the obviously infatuated Steven, but Steven dismisses her. In 24 hours, it seems all Stevens dreams are coming true, but he isn't sure what to believe.
This a sweet quick story, no surprises really. I sort of don't feel like we get to really know Devon. There is a glass figurine that breaks when he is moving in, that he seems upset to lose and I had hoped that we would get to learn about its significance. But it's not too deep and a nice read while waiting for breakfast muffins to bake!

Not really sure how I feel about this book. This is the third Jet Mykles story that I have read and they all have had the same thing in them: One guy is gay. The other guy is straight (or thinks he is). The straight guy then suddenly decides that wow, he just may be gay after all! Even though he's never been with another man. He's never wanted to be with another man. But suddenly this attractive gay man comes along and "Wow! I'm gay now!" Okay, I know the sarcasm is wrong but c'mon.
I didn't hate this story. I didn't love this story. I just feel that it needed more depth. I understand it was meant to be a short story. But even in short stories, there should be SOME type of depth to it.
I will continue to read her books. I do like the characters in them, even if I do think that some of the stories are a bit much.

Devon a young man who was just moving into the building was sexy in a shy-I-don't-know-how-good-I-look kinda way. Steven was not so shy-I'm-gay-you-don't-have-to-like-it kinda sexy, and thought that Devon was very sexy but was off limits, because he's straight. But knowing that doesn't stop Steven from touching him at every little chance, and looking his feel when ever he can. Having decided to help the struggling young man out when he can, means the two of them is together a lot.
This book only gets 3 stars, while I like it I feel I would have liked it more if it was longer so it could tell us more about Devon. We do learn about him, just not enough for my taste.

3.5 stars. This is a cute story about a chef and his new neighbor. When Devon moves in, it's obvious that he needs a little help. And Steven is the one to give it to him. Devon thinks he's straight and in fact has never met a gay man before. But Patty, one of Steven's other neighbors thinks differently. Steven is always taking care of everyone and Patty and Patty thinks he's doing more Devon. Then Steven meets a man who is in the restaurant business and wants Steven to be his new chef. Devon seems like maybe he's a little bit jealous. While Steven is working hard at two jobs, Patty and Devon take up the slack and begin taking care of Steven. And then things change :)

What is patty's deal anyway? Like Im so tired of typical female characters in these novels. So few of them make any sense. Do they all have to b bitchy interferring types. Got no life of their own? They have got no depth at all.
Apart from that I could not understand Devon's character. Maybe because it was not from his pov. But that has never been a problem before. Like I don't know when he thought or felt what. But good book.

Probably more of a 3.5 star than a full 4 star read. Cute, fluffy story about a chef who falls in love with the new neighbor. A bit unusual for a Mykles, as the more experienced half of the couple had to be talked into getting involved. Would have liked a longer story, but it was enjoyable as written.

This is reading slow. I'm not enjoying it as much as I wanted to. I've moved on to other books and occasionally go back to read this.

Oh I ♥ this one! Thanks KJ for the suggestion! It was utterly sweet and even with it being shorter it didn't feel too rushed. I adore them both and felt they love! 5 stars for sure!

It was...just okay. I just didn't feel much for the characters. They weren't bad,just didn't make me care. At all.
