Even as a young woman, Tanner is haunted by childhood nightmares of alien abduction. She’s trying to find her place in college, but a series of bizarre murders on campus isn’t helping her paranoia. Tanner just desperately wants to be normal, but finds herself in the center of a celestial game, the players beyond comprehension. The terrifying truth spans across humanity, and there is no hope, there is no tomorrow. There is darkness in every room.
Brian Fatah Steele has been writing various types of dark fiction for over fifteen years, often describing it as “cosmic horror with elements of urban fantasy and sci-fi.” Steele originally went to school for fine arts but finds himself far more fulfilled now by storytelling. His own titles include DIRE BRANCHES (Alien Agenda Publishing), OUR CARRION HEARTS (Bloodshot Books), HUNGRY RAIN (Severed Press), CELESTIAL SEEPAGE (Alien Agenda Publishing), BLEED AWAY THE SKY (Bloodshot Books) and THERE IS DARKNESS IN EVERY ROOM (Sinister Grin Press), along with the self-published YOUR ARMS AROUND ENTROPY, BRUTAL STARLIGHT, FURTHER THAN FATE, and IN BLEED COUNTRY. His work has appeared in such anthologies as 4POCALYPSE, BLOOD TYPE, CTHULHU LIES DREAMING, DEATH’S REALM, THE IDOLATERS OF CTHULHU, and the Bram Stoker Award-nominated DARK VISIONS, VOL.1.
One staple of cosmic horror is the utter insignificance of humanity, both to the universe (or universes) as well as to the entities that were around before the universe was the universe. But what happens when some of these entities decide to have a bit of fun and use us as fruit flies in sadistic and bizarre experiments?
Although the story centers around a young woman named Tanner who is haunted by her experiences of being abducted by entities since her childhood, many others in the story also find themselves at the mercy of these entities, with some faring better than others, particularly if they have some quality that interests their abductors. If not, then it’s vivisection time.
Brian Fatah Steele has woven a deeply disturbing story that keeps your interest until the last page. It’s perfect for both seasoned readers of cosmic and weird horror, and those who may be new to the genre.
I read this a while back, but I really haven't forgotten it. This was in intro to Brian's longer work (I knew his name from some Grey Matter Press anthos) and I'm glad I took a chance. I've honestly been let down by indie writers as of late. The chapters are super short and can be devoured quickly if that's your thing. Oh, and you must LOVE aliens (or whatever else is out there) to be into this book. I had the X-Files going on in my head a lot while reading this.
Filled with creepy goodness, There is Darkness in Every Room will make you paranoid, afraid to walk alone and wanting to scrub your eyeballs out with your toothbrush. So much to like, so many characters to hate, and galactic gross-out horror galore. This was my first Brian Fatah Steele book, it won't be my last.
A five star cosmic mindtrip! It made me feel like I was living inside a Blue Oyster Cult song! Killer science fiction story. Deep, dark and just enough blood to keep horror fans happy. Tremendous writing as well. Go read it!
