"Violent visions in our souls. You and I are brother and sister of the axe, husband and wife to the dark. The crow caws at midnight.”
It’s Halloween night. Timothy Sun stands in a garden of graves beneath the branches of the Tim Burton tree, his eyes deadlocked with the gorgeous creature in the raven costume. She beckons to him with one hand, while holding an axe in the other.
One month ago, he was a lonely shop owner hiding from a dark past. Then he met her. He met his violent violet and Timothy knew he’d never be alone again… if only murder wasn’t the only way to keep Velva Jones's affection. Either Timothy plays her game of secrets and murder or damns himself to an early grave. The game has begun, but how will it end?
When Mav Skye isn't turning innocent characters into axe murderers, refinishing old furniture, chasing around her spring ducklings, or reading the latest horror novel, she's hosting the new horror story podcast, Dark Softly Tales. She adores puppies, pirates, skulls, red hots, Tarantino movies and yes, Godzilla. Especially Godzilla.
This Mav Skye's first full novel and the third of hers I've read. She really knows how to keep me guessing. It starts with Sir Sun answering a personal ad. He lives a rather routine life but this changes everything. He writes back and forth with Velva as weird stuff seems to start. When he finally meets her all hell breaks loose. I spent half of this book wondering if he was crazy or if someone was screwing with him. Everytime I thought I was getting close to the answer of what was happening I would be wrong. There was some things I hadn't even guessed at until it was revealed at the end. Even then the last page had a twist I didn't expect. If you like creepy gory tales this is a must have.
With Wanted: Single Rose, Mav Skye has created a bizarre horror story with streaks of comedy. It is a very unusual read. Your everyday Tom, Dick or Harry falls in love with a stunning woman sounds like a cliché; it is quite different, though. Mav Skye paints a pretty clear picture of the protagonists’ minds while the story evolves. It took me a few chapters to buy into the story; the next chapter put me on the right track. This mix of hard-core horror and comedy may be disturbing some readers’ minds. Wanted: Single Rose is a feast for Tim Burton and Tarantino fans; more horror than comedy, a fast read. ‘Mad World’ by Gary Jules sprang to my mind, my catchy tune throughout the final chapters.
Sir Sun has developed a new obsession: Velva, a pretty little femme fatale that he can't get out of his head. He finds himself dragged out of the routine life he knew and into a life full of mayhem and dark fascination. A life he may be a better fit for than he wishes, a life he's mortified to find he might actually (whisper it) like.
Macabre, hilarious, gory, and uncomfortably sexy; Mav Skye has crafted a story full of jaw-dropping moments that will leave you horrified, laughing, and trying not to cringe.
So, sit back, relax, don't grab a snack (trust me on this one), and turn the lights low. You're in the hands of a master here. Read this now!
Mav Skye certainly has her funions with this psychotic romp into a death cult. Troubled and occasionally prone to violence loner, Sir Sun, is lured into a bloody night of axe-wielding, teenager-ending fun by the sexy and mysterious, Velva (who has now become my fictional girl crush). Frankly, for Velva, a party full of teenagers wouldn't seem that big a deal. Anyway, this is mind-twisting, funny, insane and masterfully suspenseful. Honestly couldn't put this one down.
The book was a pageturner. A lot of suspense. It kept me guessing like those mystery parties where everyone dies one by one til you are confused who the killer is. I liked it. Good job
