South-One Bears #1

Heartsridge Shifters: Austin

Rate this book
It's a new world. Shifters are no longer a secret and they're ready to fight for their right to live free.

Everything is different.

Six years ago, the Registration Act forced shifters out into the open and the world changed. Towns were created to provide a safe haven for those shifters who chose to follow the law, and those who didn't were declared rogue.

Heartsridge is one of the few shifter towns in existence, guarded and protected by special teams of bears and wolves. Their job: to protect the right for shifters to live and love, and for the space to run free as nature intended. Because not all humans found the truth easy to accept--that they're no longer the dominant species. Tourism keeps the town thriving, humans able to visit and stay for a week, but then they have to leave.

It's the law.

As the Alpha of Bear Team South-One, it's Austin Ford's job to secure the perimeter of the town from possible threats and make sure the visiting humans follow the rules. No exceptions, and that includes the beautiful, curvy human woman he finds trespassing in his forest. Defiant and frustratingly stubborn, everything about the gorgeous human calls to the bear inside him. Before he's even had chance to snarl, she's got the furry oaf of a bear wrapped around her little finger, leaving the man confused and trying to catch up. But he has his suspicions. He's pretty sure he's just met his fated mate.

Unlike the other tourists, Leona Kelly isn't visiting Heartsridge to snag a shifter. She's here to find her missing sister. A woman on a mission, she has no interest in shifters, no matter how devastatingly attractive they might be. Or he might be. Austin. The big, burly bear shifter who'd thrown her over his shoulder and hauled her out of the forest. He says he wants to help, but can she trust him? Then a shocking discovery changes everything. Leona no longer wants to leave, but she's not allowed to stay. Austin is the only one she can turn to for help.

But why is he helping her? And what could he possibly want from a human who doesn't belong in his world?

**This 53,000 word novel contains naughty language, fully realized love scenes, and big, burly bear shifters who only have eyes for their fated mates. HEA guaranteed.**

Heartsridge Shifters: Austin by Olivia Arran

3 stars

Austin is a PNR centering on Austin Ford, a bear shifter in charge of security for Heartsridge, a shifter community, and Leona Kelly, a human who has come to Heartsridge looking for her missing sister.

Overall, I thought Austin was a well-developed hero. Some PNRs tend to make male shifters into one-dimensional he-men who can do little more than grunt and fight. More than once, Austin shows himself to be fairly level-headed and calculating, especially when it comes to managing his "clan".

Unfortunately, I was incredibly frustrated when it came to Leona and Austin's lack of communication. This was one of those situations where the drama of the story only occurs because the two main characters demonstrate the communication ability of brick walls. After they spent the night together, Leona learns that shifters can mate with humans and, since Austin chose not to basically marry her on their first date, he obviously only wants her for sex. Similarly, once Leona tells Austin she "had fun" the next day, Austin immediately assumes SHE only wants HIM for sex, and they both sulk.

What happens?
Austin is South 1's shifters. He is in charge of Cade, Nate, Jake and Brent. All are bear shifters and unmated. Austin knows as soon as he sees Leona that she is his fated mate. Its just the challenge of getting her to know that that is proving difficult.
Leona is in town looking for her sister Harper who was always meant to check in and one day just stops. This leads Leona into a panic and so she hops on a bus and ends up in Heartsridge a shifter town that allows human tourists in to visit for a week at a time.
Final thoughts
There are no spoilers aside from maybe a mate reveal if this book series is a spin off from one... I liked their romance though and I'm curious about the rest of the series.

So...last night I didn't feel like doing anything except lying on the couch and checking into a story. I have tons of books waiting to be read, but impulsively I clicked buy on this title. I have a bad thing for shapeshifters. And well, this was a book about hot shapeshifting men. It's the inner beast thing, I think. You can guess at my mood last night.

I don't read romance/erotica often, so I was not sure how to compare this story to others. It's a simple read with much naughtiness. The buildup could have lasted longer and Arran's use of sweetheart was a bit nauseating. But the naughty parts were executed well and overall I enjoyed the quick read that it was. It was an interesting set, with a shapeshifter community trying to co-exist among annoying and nosy humans.

I appreciated the age of the characters being in their 30's. I could relate to that and the characters were likeable enough to allow me to cheer for their success.

If you are looking for a light and tantalizing read that might make you feel something down under, then I recommend this story.

Interesting, immersive, and left me wanting more (so much so I have ended up reading all the books in the series to date!).

Although an easy romance shifter read, it was also one that included a bit of action/mystery. I do admit that parts of the beginning were a bit iffy to me. Liked it but thought it came off a little clumsy.

I really liked the male main character in this but the female mc...it took awhile and even now I wouldn't say I loved her at all. She was just so frustrating and at times, slow to really get the situation which was pretty blatantly obvious.

But still, enjoyed it and would highly recommend the series to paranormal shifter fans. :)

Great intro to new world where shifters are registered and rules apply to humans visiting their town.
A little angst, mystery and some reluctance by H when he recognises the h as his fated mate, but he also want her to fall in love with him. He wants to fall in love with her too. It was sweet and funny, with lots of potential mates for other books. I wasn't so keen on the communication gap as a plot device, there was enough well developed characters and history to use to make this a stronger book. Overall good, with potential to be a great series.

I have the feeling that Heartsridge Shifters: Austin is merely the beginning of a fantastic series. The world building is subtle, we discover the lore of this world and the vital information as part of conversations not necessarily as information dumps (which I greatly appreciate). The cast of characters is wide and varied – and I already have some favorite secondary characters to watch for as the series develops.

Leona is searching for her missing sister. Harper had come to this shifter town for a relaxing time and to take some photos of the surrounding forests. When she didn’t return home when expected Leona began to get worried. She gathered up her courage and set out to find her sister. And no one was going to get in her way. Especially not some sexy bear shifter who stole her heart at first glance.

Austin was aware of the pretty little human but he never did the flirt thing with visitors. Yeah, he wanted to find his mate, but he didn’t expect to find her on a vacation to Heartsridge. As Alpha of his security team that helps keep his town safe from rogues, intruders and the foolish, Austin had enough on his plate.. So he was surprised to find the human off in the woods in a completely restricted area. Oh, she was feisty, stubborn and not a little scared – but he also soon discovered that she was also his mate. Go figure. Now life was about to get complicated. As he learned more about her search for her sister, Austin was determined to help her in any way he could. Something wasn’t right but they’d get to the bottom of it all. But what to do about the mate part. She was human, he really wanted his mate to love him for himself not for the fact that he’s a shifter… fated mate, yeah he got that, but he wanted it to be her human’s heart to made the choice to love him. Hopefully he hasn’t waited to long to tell her exactly how he feels about her.

I really enjoyed Austin and Leona’s romance. Of course there is drama, danger, sexy times and getting to know a whole new group of supporting characters. That’s all part of starting a new series. This story draws you in, and before you know it you’re deep in their lives and enjoying every second. There were several laugh out loud moments, a few soft smiles at a bear’s idea of romance and definitely heart pounding sexy times. It’s very tempting to say too much so I’ll simply say that I’d highly recommend this story to any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader. The story is engaging, believable and emotional. I’m about to go download the next story in this series. I really think Ms Arran has a huge hit on her hands with South-One Bears – and I certainly hope for a lot more stories to be told about these characters.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

How have I never heard of this author before? There are so many terribly written shifter books out there, and this one is not only written well, it's really super adorable!

Leona travels to a shifter settlement that her sister had visited the week prior and never returned from. As she's searching around town, she gets caught snooping in the woods by Austin, the alpha for a small band of bears that are in charge of patrolling the area. He quickly realizes Leona is his fated mate, but decides he wants to woo her the old-fashioned way so that they'll have a real connection behind their mating.

There's not a lot of drama or action in this book. The secret of Leona's sister's disappearance is discovered pretty early on, and there's no "big bad" in the story. The main focus is really just Leona and Austin getting together.

While I did like all the characters in the book, I think Austin was definitely the star. Leona is likeable enough, just wasn't as developed as Austin was.

Where this book is lacking for me, however, is in the steam factor. There's just not a lot of sexual tension between the MCs. They say they're hot for each other, but it just doesn't come across that way in their actions. I think they spend too much time separately, so their attraction doesn't come across as well as it could. Their two trysts are really lackluster and kind of just boring.

I think this is a great book if you're looking for a shifter romance that's more sweet than sexy and also low on violence and angst. I thought it was really cute, and written so well that I'll definitely grab more by the author.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. Heartsridge—a town of registered shifters is one of several shifter-only towns. Law now requires shifters—since it has come out that shifters live amongst the human population—be registered. The choices: be registered and tracked, live in a shifter-only town or live as a rogue and be considered dangerous. Heartsridge supports itself by acting as a tourist destination. Humans can visit for one week only. Then, they must leave. The only way a human can stay is as the mate of a shifter or if they work there in some necessary capacity. Leona is a woman who came as a tourist so that she could begin looking for her sister Harper who has disappeared. She’s not getting the answers that she wants so far and goes through many channels to find out what she needs. Austin is the South-One Alpha who thinks about duty and little else until he meets Leona and she stirs his mating instincts. From there, he goes out of his way to help her and he has to learn how to express himself to her regarding his feelings. I really liked this story and hope that we’ll get more stories in this series!

very good but…

All romances follow the same basic formula: boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back for the HEA. Problem with this story was the boy loses girl phase—the heroine dumps the hero for reasons totally made up in her own head. She then found “support” for her conclusions by eavesdropping on a conversation at a cafe. Conversation didn’t mention the hero. Nor did the heroine even know the silly woman who did all the talking. In a new relationship it’s normal to be insecure but I just can’t see dumping a guy who’s been a true hero to you & your sister without even attempting to talk to him first. It’s silly, immature & out of character, given that the author had gone to great lengths to make the heroine seem responsible & mature. Still, I very much liked the hero & soldiered on. Overall, the story was good & I will keep reading this author’s books. Writing is very good & worth reading.

This is the opener for a new series of shifters who are guardians for a shifter town. Humans are only granted a seven day visit every year. Leona arrives to look for her sister Harper who should have returned home but didn't. Leona is discovered in a forbidden area by Austin who scents his mate in Leona. Austin is the alpha of the South 1 group of guardian bears. He must discover why Leona is there for that he has to gain her trust.

This story was a great beginning if you ask me. Awesome shifters to get to know and fall in love with. Ms. Arran manages to engage my emotions with her stories which is why I recommend her stories to any who love shifters.

I voluntarily read an advance copy and wish I could have purchased one as well.

I love this new "world", shifters live in reservation type compounds. Voluntarily they allow humans to visit, but only for 7 days. The shifters of all kinds work together and run their towns as resorts as well as their homes. Thank goodness they still have fated mates, if they can find them. And a plain Jane accountant named Leona, just looking for her sister, can have a wild time with a super hot bear shifter. Alpha bear Austin helps with Heartridge security, when he finds Leona wondering in his woods there is an instant attraction. Mate? I love these characters, the story is inventive and totally takes you away. Can't wait for more!

A girl is out on a mission to find her missing sister. She does find her but she also finds a hot man along the way. One who is a gentleman and offers his help but of course things start to develop and bloom between the two. This wasn't a really long read, but not to short. I feel it was perfect length and lovely writing. There is romance, friends and drama. Which makes a romance far more enjoyable to me. I prefer some plot & twists with the smut not just tons of smut and nothing else.
Truly an enjoyable read.♥♥♥

HEARTSRIDGE SHIFTERS: AUSTIN

I love this authors books, and this one is no different. The storyline was exciting and entertaining, filled with action, drama, and some hot romance. I loved the main characters, Austin and Leona. They suited each other perfectly and had great chemistry. But as we know the life of a shifter is never smooth sailing, and they had to work hard to be together. But true love always prevails, and it does in all the good ways. A nice enjoyable read that flowed smoothly, with a touch of spice.

Over all I liked this book. It has good characters and a good story line. I only had two problems with this book. The first being that it was not long enough or detailed enough and the second is that apart from Leona's short peeping tom moment, Austin never showed her his bear in bear form. I found that odd, as I have read a lot of shifter books and never once had that problem. But other than those small things it was a good book and I look forward to reading the next one.

What a Bear

This is a beautifully written story. There is sexual content and some wonderful and memorable characters. Loved it and can hardly wait to start the next. It's fast moving. Austin is a bear shifter who is normally gruff, but finding his mate he shows the other side of his personality. He also has a secret.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved Austin and Leona as well as the members of the South-one team, the other team's alphas, and Leona's sister Harper. We learned about Austin's past and got to see Leona's strength. Also, I learned enough about the other shifters to spark my interest in reading more of the series. Well Done!

This paranormal romance series is hot and intriguing. Although the pacing felt stilted in the first few chapters, the author gets into a great groove about a third of the way in- and holds it throughout the rest of the book. The satisfying HEA and steamy moments make this a really good shifter romance read. (I give the rest of the series 5 stars!)

Leona and Austin

Good into to a new series. I found Austin to be a shifter to admire and Leona to be a person that out the L in loyalty. Light violence, lots of steamy sex and some laughs. All in all as nice quick read.

Great fast read

I love how well developed the characters are. I also like that the author put in some realistic problems in the relationship due to lack of communication and confidence in both Austin and Leona. It makes the story more relatable for me.

This was an alright book. Functionally proficient, decent characters. Fair amount of development given the length. I might read the author again but there was nothing about this book to make it very memorable

A new life

He was the alpha of his clan and he was good at his hob so when he found a human in their area he stopped her and ask her why? She was in the small town looking for her missing sister last seen here 8 days ago.
