Caitlin was fortunate growing up to be surrounded by family and teachers that encouraged her love of reading. She has always been a voracious reader and that love of the written word easily morphed into a passion for writing. If she isn't writing, she can usually be found studying as she works toward her counseling degree. She comes from a military family and the men and women of the armed forces are close to her heart. She also enjoys gardening and horseback riding in the Colorado Rockies where she calls home with her wonderful fiance and their dog. Her belief that there is no one true path to happily ever after runs deeply through all of her stories.

I liked His Brother’s Beta by Caitlin Ricci and A.J. Marcus. His Brother’s Beta is the first book in the Pack Rules series. I did have mixed feelings about this book. His Brother’s Beta is well written, and I liked the plot but the second half of the book seemed rushed and not as developed as the first half of the book. I would have liked better chemistry between Harlow and Nathan. I liked both Harlow and Nathan as separate characters, but there didn’t seem to be any chemistry between them before they became mates. I would have liked to see more of a build-up of chemistry between them. I also hated Harlow’s brother Silvio and his how he treated his “harem,” but that’s how I was supposed to feel about him so great job there. I think what bothered me the most is how young the men in the “harem” are. Although it’s stated that they’re at least 19 years old, they seem younger because of how they acted, whether in human form or wolf form. I did like what happened to Silvio and how the pack recovered. I did like Lydia’s character and how she stayed to protect the “harem” as much as she could from Silvio.

Poor Harlow didn’t know what he was getting himself into when he came back to take his place in the Woodlands pack after finishing his schooling and his stint with the Peace Corps. He came back to be the pack’s doctor. He definitely wasn’t expecting to find that everybody he knew, except for his friend Lydia and younger brother Silvio, who is now the pack’s Alpha, to be gone. Now it’s up to Harlow to find out what happened and come up with a plan to fix everything. The brother Harlow knew is no more and has been replaced by a monster that only cares about what he wants and has a taste for young men, his harem.

Nathan is Silvio’s beta. He was changed by Silvio and has been with the pack for five years. He doesn’t enjoy being the pack enforcer to a crazy alpha, but he knows that a pack’s better with an alpha than without one, even if said alpha is volatile. Nathan knows that he doesn’t have what it takes to be the next alpha so he tries to protect the pack as best he can while waiting for another potential alpha to come along. He thinks his wish may have come true when the alpha’s older brother shows up.

I eagerly await the next book in the series. I can’t wait to see how the young wolves continue to flourish and hope to see one of them find their mate. Hopefully, there will be more of a build-up of chemistry in the next book. Overall, a good start to a new series.

3.5 stars. I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked it, but it felt really rushed to me, especially the last half, which just made it feel awkward. I really wasn't prepared for Silvio, Harlow's brother. He was just plain crazy, and I didn't like what he did to his "harem", but he got what was coming, so that was good. Nathan and Harlow needed better chemistry, it was like one day they both decided they loved each other and should be mates out of the blue. They definitely needed more buildup in their relationship bc it just didn't work for me. I was more interested in the overall story and what is going to happen with the younger wolves. I really liked Miles, he's a sweetie that needs a kind mate. I will definitely read the next book to find out what happens now with those younger pack members, but I'm hoping there is more chemistry and meat to their relationships.

Total Score: 4/5

Summary:
After years of study to become a doctor Harlow was ready to return to his place in the pack to find it decimated and run by his brother who who treated the few who were left with no regard. Even worse was his treatment of the young men in his harem who were abused both physically and sexually. There was only one remaining original member, Lydia, while the others had been turned for his pleasure except for Nathan who was the beta. If it wasn't for Lydia Harlow would have found nothing but distrust and possible hope from members of the harem. Harlow never wanted to be alpha, but when the pack looked toward him to help them faced a terrible choice; leave or fight for leadership of the pack. The pack needs a leader who is both strong and wise enough to lead by example and Harlow with Nathan's help might be just that man.

His Brother’s Beta was a delightful read from start to finish. I’m not sure why I’m in the short story mode right now, but the last few I’ve read have really hit the mark. I was able to complete this book in just a few hours, and it helped to pass the time in a wonderful way.

While sex was not a significant component of this story, barely even being hinted at, it was the pack dynamics and the character development that did it for me. The premise was so unique. An alpha who wiped out his own pack and turned local human men (barely men) into werewolves to create his own personal harem, set the stage for what Harlow, a long-lost brother, came back home to. Add to this a hot beta, Nathan, who is trying to protect the pack against the alpha’s savage leadership, and a lone original pack member who is all that remains from the main character’s childhood, and I found myself tearing through the book and wondering what would happen next.

As with any good book, I would have loved more. Definitely more of the physical aspect of the main love interest. But also a bit more of the tugs and struggles of the situation creating tension and angst. Again, not something I can reasonably expect from a short novella.

All in all, a lovely bit of writing. Perfect for a mid-day weekend treat.

This is a shifter book with a difference that just didn't work for me. I found the book too short, very rushed and not enough of an explanation about the events were happening.

Overall I found the book very strange

Start of something new (3.5 stars)

I love shifter books and this one was just okay, but it did have a good premise and it was enough to get me interested in reading on as this pack starts to grow. It’s a quick read.

My favorite kind of shifter story. Wolves and the forming/growing of a pack. In this case, it’s more of rebuilding and growing a pack. It’s fast paced and not much romance, but it’s still an enjoyable read. Great start to a series.
