Highlander Unchained & Forbidden Highlander

Rate this book
Cree & Dawn Series Books 1 & 2 (formerly Highlander Trilogy)

Highlander Unchained & Forbidden Highlander are now together in one new revised edition!

An infamous Highlander. A peasant woman without a voice. An undeniable love.

The infamous warrior Cree is paraded before the village Dowell and though shackled and wounded he walks with arrogant pride, meeting all the curious and fearful stares of the villagers with a fierceness that has them quickly turning their heads away, all but one woman.

Dawn cannot keep her eyes off the captured warrior, though tales of his exploits suggests he’s more devil than man. When his eyes meet hers, she wonders if the notorious tales are true for only the devil himself could be that sinfully handsome.

Dawn is summoned by the liege lord Colum and ordered to tend Cree, in all ways possible, while he awaits his fate, and please him she must or suffer the consequences. Colum laughs when he issues his orders. He’s sending not only a plain woman to please the mighty warrior in his final days, but one he’ll find no pleasure with. After all, what man wants a woman who cannot utter a sound.

But no shackles can hold Cree and when he breaks free he returns to claim the voiceless woman who found a way into his silent heart.

Cree and Dawn’s story continues in Forbidden Highlander.

Dawn struggles to accept her future as Cree’s mistress while his future bride Lucerne Gerwan arrives in the village. But there is more for her to worry over. The attempts on her life continue and she fears Cree’s reaction when he learns that she carries his child.

The situation grows worse when warriors from the McClusky clan arrive in the village and the laird Kirk McClusky claims that Dawn is his daughter. Dawn wonders if it can be true and though her father insists she return home with him, she knows her love for Cree will never allow her to leave him. She cannot envision life without him.

Cree faces many obstacles in ensuring Dawn will be his, the hardest being his own failure to tell Dawn how he truly feels about her. But when she is taken from him, his temper rages and nothing stops him from bringing her home. He cannot think of life without her.

Cree and Dawn battle old secrets that finally surface and threaten to tear them apart. And it is with strength and courage that they fight for their love and a future together.

This book was really long— like 700 pages long. It took me forever to finish. I got to 60 percent and put it down for a long time. Anywho on with the program. Cree is a captured warlord. Dawn is a mute peasant. She is sent to take care of all Crees needs while he’s Locked up. He becomes obsessive about Dawn and when he is freed he makes her his mistress since the King has set him up in an arranged marriage. He’s very obsessive possessive with Dawn. So the story moves along with someone constantly trying to kill Dawn, then sex rinse and repeat. A lot of aha moments etc. There are like 10 books about Dawn and Cree… but I think reading this was enough…. Maybe….

Books depicting medieval time period appeal to me mostly because of all the preconceived notions people of that time used to have, i.e. red hair or writing with left hand was considered the sigh of Devil or their healing practices and so forth. This book had many such things plus constant suspense about the identity of the killer, and reasons behind the assaults on the main heroine made this book a good read for me.

Dawn is voiceless, has always been like this and has accepted her lot. People who surround her are superstitious and don't treat her well. I liked her for being brave and not being a doormat. She stood up for herself and was very kind and forgiving. Everything changed for her with the arrival of Cree. Cree could be considered an obnoxious possessive alpha male but thinking about the time period of the book I let it slide - it didn't bother me much that he ordered Dawn around, it never felt malicious just a tad arrogant.

Cree was on the way to have a home and a title. He worked hard, fought many battles for it all to be lost because of a woman and a voiceless one at that. But the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and what starts as a convenient arrangement with a plain woman with no voice turns into passionate and loving relationship with spirited and alluring highland lass.

There is plenty of intrigue, villains and questions that kept me guessing. It was well-written fast-paced romance with interesting plot and diverse characters. I loved it! I highly recommend it!

This was two books. And I LOVED IT!! The heroine was mute. No grunting or sound at all, she was born without a voice-box or vocal cords or something. There was angst as the Hero made her his mistress and then fell in love with her, but knew he couldn't marry her because he promised the king he would marry another. It's super frustrating when a woman accepts her fate as a mistress, and I have a hard time, living in the time I live now, understanding that women just didn't have options like we do now. I want them to be stronger and stand up for themselves. But she just loves him, and by loving him it melts his frozen heart. And when she is in targeted and it's clear she is in danger his protective instincts come out and rushes his feelings along even more. So despite the frustration I felt at her accepting her lot, it didn't stay frustrating for too long.

'Highlander Unchained & Forbidden Highlander' by Donna Fletcher is the story of Cree & Dawn. There are actually two books in this set. They were originally released around 2012 separately. Highlander Unchained was book one and Forbidden Highlander was book two in the ""Highlander Trilogy". Both books deal with Cree and Dawn's story. Book three "Highlander's Captive" which is a separate book deals with Cree's sister and Dawn's brother.
I am such a big Fan of Ms. Fletcher's writing and these two books just confirmed my reason for making her a favorite author. I could not put these books down...I had so much to do but dropped it all to finish reading Cree and Dawn's story. If Ms. Fletcher had a million books and I had a million dollars I would not have a million dollars for long...nor would I have any time for anything other than reading.
Cree was the strong warrior type that described himself as not having a heart. Cree had a goal in mind of taking over land and become a titled lord. Nothing in his plans were for a strong, loyal women who had such a big heart...nor a women who put others before herself. Dawn did have disability that kept her from speaking but nothing slowed her down.
Cree had tried to fight his attraction and growing feelings for Dawn but he was loosing that battle. The King had arranged a marriage for him to a nobleman's daughter to help secure his land and title he wanted. So Cree could not make Dawn his wife and never really offered that option to her. Dawn was a hardworking women that help her friends and even a few of the people that did her wrong. Dawn understood her place with Cree and knew that he would never love her but that didn't stop her from opening up to him...which made it hard for Cree not to love her.
This book had so many emotions for me...sometimes I hated Cree but other times I just couldn't help but love him for a main character. He only wanted to keep Dawn safe even though she wouldn't listen to him and kept getting herself into trouble. He such a Alpha male that he didn't want her touch another man for any reason. Dawn was only for him!

So. First the things I didn't like too much.

Cree is a giant, possessive, jealous, controlling Douche Canoe. His main personality is: Angry and Horny. His favorite word is 'Damn'. He uses it for anything and everything. I'm fairly certain 30% of his entire dialogue is 'damn.'

Dawn is a Mary Sue, in this case it wasn't too bad. I don't mind Mary Sues, I do mind boring ones and Dawn wasn't boring. It was nice to have a main character who has a disability. Always points for that.

Here is the plot in a nutshell:
*Assassin tries to kill Dawn*
*Fails*
*Assassin Runs Away*
*Cree Is Angry*
*no one can find assassin*
Dawn ignores instructions and someone takes advantage and tries to kill her again .
Rinse and Repeat.

For some reason though despite all this, it still held my attention and I enjoyed it enough. If you like Scottish people romance and angsty, controlling love interests, try this one out.

my heart almost dropped out of my chest when i saw that this book had 72 chapters. i was relieved after realizing it was 2 books in 1. it scared the shit out of me honestly. i have read many books and the most chapters i have seen were probably 50.

okay so it's been a while since i've read Donna's books and i remembered i really loved her Return of the Rogue but not the other Sinclair brothers' books so i was worried i wouldn't like this one.

boy was i wrong! i was hooked from the beginning and devoured almost every word!

the plot was interesting, a romance between a mute woman & a highlander. i have read many books and have come across a blind man romance with a woman but never a mute woman. it was interesting to see gestures used by Dawn and how they allowed others to understand her.

i honestly found it hard to like Cree at the beginning because he was always just ordering Dawn around but over time i like that we saw him soften towards Dawn and become nicer to her. he starts compromising with her, though not often, he still does and he takes care of his tone with her. he can be really demanding (with his orders to Dawn - which i did not like) and too protective of her sometimes, but it kinda warms my heart to see such a hard man like Cree falling in love with Dawn.

As for Dawn, i like that she has been a really strong woman from the start even though she was mute but did not have many chances to show it until Cree gave her more confidence to do so. she was courageous but sometimes i feel she's really foolish and reckless in her actions.

a huge example of that is her defying Cree's orders to stay in her house but she just refuses to wait and wants to help but that in turn puts herself in danger and i dislike that. part of that is her fault, and part of it was Cree's fault for just ordering her and not telling her earlier that he wants her to stay put because he doesn't want to worry about her too much.

while i do like that Cree interacts with Dawn like Dawn was a normal person who could speak and their numerous interactions with Cree understanding Dawn's hand gestures, i do think he has some communication issues because apparently, Dawn speaks better than him despite being mute. she probably would have stayed put if he had expressed his worries over her in proper words instead of 'you are not allowed to leave your house'.

onto their relationship building, it was heartwarming to see Cree start from a scowling and mean man to a still scowling-sometimes smiles-and-teases-kind of man after spending some time with Dawn. i did like Dawn becoming more confident of herself and even shows all her feelings with Cree. she gets angry at him and teases him and i just love the chemistry between them. they often quarrel but it just goes to show how close they are. my favorite part of Dawn's anger was how Dawn shoved Cree and he just goes dumbfounded, asking her 'did you just shove me?' because he couldn't believe she did something like that. because no one ever scolds or shoves the big and scary Cree. sometimes Dawn would try to seduce Cree and he would succumb to it and it's cute.

they are just having sex almost every chapter. i do love sex scenes and i can't believe i'm saying this but there's way too much. Cree is just aroused about wanting to have sex with Dawn all the time that i couldn't understand why. i would prefer more bonding between Cree & Dawn.. it's ironic because in Return of the Rogue, i felt there was too little sex. now in this book, there was too much.

i'm not much of a mystery/action kind of person but i was really invested in this story that i just read everything and wanted to know what would happen. unfortunately, i felt this was toooo dragged out that it made me become from wanting to know to i wanna know but kinda don't wanna know as i was tired of everything dragging out. it was a vicious cycle, Dawn disobeying Cree in going out and getting herself injured or in danger and it continues with more drama being inserted. on top of someone wanting to murder Dawn, in comes her father and brother drama.

apparently this book ended with Cree's sister being abducted so it seems it would continue for now. i will read the sequels because it didn't end properly with Cree and Dawn with their child + that cliffhanger which will be on my mind.

i had difficulties deciding between 3 or 4 stars and i couldn't choose 4 stars because of the cons i listed but it had some moments which i liked as well so i settled on 3.5 stars.

RANT INCOMING.. Look, I wanted to love this but it was just not great. Cree is a one dimensional controlling ass and Dawn is a mute Mary Sue with no personality... There's a lot of not super great smut and after the 3rd repeat plot point my interest was gone....

PLOT:
Cree the warrior is captured and brought to a village where the cruel leader chooses mute peasant woman Dawn to care for and service him. When Cree frees himself she becomes his woman but a secret killer is lying in wait to end them both.

THOUGHTS:

- I was intrigued by the premise when the book started. A scared woman who can't talk who is forced to wait on a brutal warrior? They're probably going to bond and he's going to see her as a person and they'll fall in love?

NOPE. NOT AT ALL.

- when the book starts Dawn is a dowdy mess, she works in the kitchen and everyone either avoids her or treats her badly bc they think her disability -being mute- makes her dumb. She stares at cree when he's captured but never expects that she'd meet him.

- I wanted to love Dawn but she's just SO BLAND! because she doesn't talk we need to rely on her thoughts to get a read on her as a character and.... There's not much to go on. She's sweet, dutiful and loves her friend. She's scared of Cree at first but quickly gets over that. When they get together she basically lets this man walk all over her and control her whole life and holds out hope that he'll love her. She's constantly making dumb decisions over and over again and she got on my nerves after the first one.

- then there's Cree. I thought he was going to be a deep soulful warrior type with a soft spot for his woman? NOPE. Instead we get a flat brutish ass who has two moods, controlling ass or horny AF. There's seriously nothing else. To add to that, HE'S BETROTHED, he knows how important his "love" is to Dawn yet he withholds that and publicly sets her up as his mistress.... Lovely. He expects dawn to just sit at home confined to her cottage all day and to open her legs for him when he wants and he gets mad if she doesn't do this or talks back in any way. Ew.

- the author tries to make the betrothed this huge evil bitch villain, and while she's not great we should really be looking at Cree here as the ass. He's literally marrying this girl to get access to her lands, plans to put a couple of kids in her and have her sit by while he fucks his mistress next door.... Dude really????

- then there's the way Cree thinks about Dawn. I get it, not every female character needs to be beautiful and gorgeous but having cree and others constantly describe her as homey and plain was not great when you can barely connect with her as a character at all!? Also, even when he started falling for her, he still thinks of her in relation to the way she can please him - "yeah she's flat chested and plain and can't moan, but wow do I get hard for her faster than with anyone else" BARF

Lastly DAWN IS AN IDIOT. not because she's mute or has a disability but because the WHOLE plot is basically "someone tries to kill her, she's given an order to stay put and she ignores that, almost gets herself killed".... REPEAT LIKE 10 TIMES!

Oh and I LOATHE the whole " this sad dowdy peasant woman is of noble birth, she's now super important and has value to me now and we can be together for real now" trope.

Like if this man had his way, he'd marry a rich noble girl he hated who didn't want kids, basically impregnating her a few times to have legitimate offspring and he'd keep Dawn next door for a quick fuck when the mood hit. Literally everyone except dawn sees this and it's so sad that she's basically willing to settle for scraps of "love" and attention from a man who basically cares nothing for her.... Yikes.

Cree & Dawn Book #1

I never guessed the culprit at all! Of course there's a bad guy, or is it a female? Maybe both? But in between many attempts on Dawn, love blossoms for Dawn. But it takes Cree a long time to realize that love has happened to his dormant, hardened heart. I'm
So many side characters to love and hope for their story to be told too. That's a hint Ms. Fletcher!
There's many chapters of lovemaking between Cree and Dawn. But the author doesn't go as far as some authors and make her book into a pornography story.
I like that these character will be showing up in future writings and I do want to know what sex Cree and Dawn baby is, boy or girl? If a girl, will she have the same affliction as the females in her family, as Dawn has no voice and cannot make even a sound.
I've looked ahead and there's 5 more stories featuring Cree and Dawn. They all are short stories, but all seem interesting.
Spoiler* they have twins. It's up to you too find out what sex they are. 😉

Enjoyed reading!!

I am a retired Secretary and writing errors do bother me...does Ms. Fletcher employ a proof reader...if not she should...many, MANY errors in both books.... HOWEVER, I thoroughly enjoyed reading these two stories...and will finish the series...why are the remainder of these books sold separately??? Also, they are listed as short stories..it makes it very expensive for many readers!! I do not mind paying for an entire series.it is difficult to continue to do so because of the cost of each "" short" stories . I feel that this is a way to take advantage of readers who really cannot afford the cost involved. I feel that many people just stop reading the remaining books of what should be sold as a boxed set, at a reasonable cost. I STILL ENJOY THIS STORY LINE!! THANK YOU, MS. FLETCHER!!!

So, if all the repeat sex was removed this book may have been 100 pages long, that might be too generous.

I get this is romance. I understand we all … most of us love the sexy times in romance stories.
However, when it is almost, like 95%, of the interactions between the MC’s it just gets old.

Great book but too much sex.

Loved this book! The characters were great, the storyline was wonderful, and it was action packed. There were so many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. My only complaint is there is way too many sex scenes. It was unrealistic. I think you could cut 100 pages out of the book if you just reduced the number of sex scenes.

Highlander Unchained was a *** novel but ended on a cliffhanger and was worth the read. The sequel was too long and dull. It was merely a ** star novel. The contrived cliffhanger at the end along with the flat characterizations means I won't be reading another of Fletcher's books.

Highlander Unchained and Forbidden Highlander by the talented Donna Fletcher us an unforgettable story. "Cree & Dawn Series Books 1 & 2 (formerly Highlander Trilogy)."

"Highlander Unchained & Forbidden Highlander are now together in one new revised edition!"

Can an infamous Highlander and a peasant woman without a voice, find their HEA? *Please note, while I would not consider this book as having a cliffhanger, it's more of a continuation of the saga of Cree and Dawn's incredible love story, it's does leave some questions.*

In "Highlander Unchained" readers find Cree, an infamous warrior of some renowned, when he's paraded before the village of Dowell, shackled and wounded, he still walks with an arrogant pride, meeting all the curious stares of the fearful villagers with a fierceness that has them all fearful for their lives. All but one, voiceless peasant, named, Dawn who is instantly attracted to him, she simply can't look away.

Dawn is issued a demand by the liege lord, Colum to attend to his renowned prisoner, Cree, in all ways possible, including pleasing him in ALL ways, while he awaits his fate, or suffer the consequences. Dawn is a virgin, she is horrified, but better to please the devil she doesn't know then the one she knows. Colum, is evil itself, he's rurhless, mean-spirited and commands subsmission of his will by all. He believes Dawn dumb, because she is voiceless, so she can not tell anything, nor his secrets, but everyone unestimates her abilities, except for her best friend and her husband, for they know she is very intelligent, kind hearted and thinks outside the box. Now Cree understands her well enough to recognize her abilities and understands her sign language. She soon falls in love with Cree, but all is not as it seems. Dawn helps Cree to escape his prison and all heck breaks loose. Cree has plans of his own, to protect Dawn and the village of Dowell, which has been decreed to him by the King for his service and his bravery. But, someone is out to silence Dawn forever.
Thus the story continues....

In "Forbidden Highlander", Cree and Dawn's story continues.... someone is still trying to silence Dawn permanently. But who and why? Dawn and Cree have become close, but Cree has been promised to another, Lucerne Gerwan, by the king. Dawn struggles with being Cree's mistress and now she's carrying his child. What will happen to her and her unborn child, when Cree finds out she's with child? When Cree marries? Lucerne, is not what she seems, either. She has her own secrets and battles. Then to make things even worse, the warriors from the McClusky clan, their laird, Kirk McClusky, and his son arrives, unwelcomed, and to the shock of all, claims Dawn to be his daughter. Is she ? She has lived her entire life not knowing her father and totally alone once her mother died, except for her best friend and Old Mary, who is a surprise to be sure. Old Mary knows much, but says very little, she speaks more in riddles. People in the village is scared of the kind-hearted Dawn, but Cree demands they give her respect. Of course, Cree and Dawn's attraction and passion grows more intense as danger lurks in the shadows. Then they learn more secrets, who is Dawn's mother, what is truly wrong with Lucerne, is she really so rude, arrogant or is there more to her and what's happening, there are so many unanswered questions. Which are answered, by the way.

Cree and Dawn is an incredible story, their love grows, if only Cree will admit his feelings to himself and Cree before it's too late. Will Cree marry Lucerne as the king decreed or can he found a way around the decreed, to marry his true love and his heart, or will he lose all including their unborn child and Dawn?

Fast paced, well written with well-developed characters who are engaging and their love breathtaking. The plot to this series is intriguing, captivating and I found myself instinctively drawn to Cree and Dawn's story. Ms. Fletcher does an excellent job of showing Dawn's disability, her capabilities, and her communication skills. Cree and Dawn are such lovable and viable characters, it's hard to turn away from them as they meet their struggles, challenges and their duties head on, with a fierceness that will leave readers breathless. This is not the ending to Cree and Dawn's story, it's only the beginning. Follow Cree and Dawn as they struggle not only to survive but to overcome the obstacles placed before them, to find their HEA. The journey of their lives continue through, in future stories.
I absolutely loved Cree and Dawn's story and their adventures, a true love story for the ages. A must read! Another hit by the incredible and talented Donna Fletcher. I always enjoy her stories, she never diappoints me and I look forward to reading more of Cree and Dawn's continuing story.
*Please be aware, while not a specific racy story, the love scenes are sensual, often and a bit, and in different ways, not to offend anyone. Some readers may find this offensive.*

One of my favorite books is the story of Dawn & Cree. Donna Fletcher makes you fall in love with both of these characters. Each store leaves you waiting for the next part of their love story.

Dawn has no voice. While she cannot make a sound, she is perfectly capable of communicating though for those who take the time to listen. When she is given the task to take care of the prisoner Cree she cannot deny that she fears him. But she has been sent to take care of all his needs and bring back information, no matter the cost.

Cree is biding his time till he will begin his attack on Dowell, after all it is his land now. Per the King's order. What Cree never expected was Dawn. Silent but strong, he cannot understand why he is so drawn to her. But as they get closer during his captivity, he finds that Dawn is his and he will protect her till his dying breath.

After Cree takes control of the village, suddenly Dawn finds herself Cree's woman. But while she is falling fast, she does not know if Cree will ever love her back. As danger keeps finding Dawn, Cree is forced to admit that he cannot see a life without her in it. But he has made commitments to another. Will he be able to convince Dawn to stay with him even if he is to marry another?

Absolutely wonderful story. Heartfelt and full of love you cannot help but fall in love with Dawn and Cree.

Highlander Unchained:
Nobody can write a Highlander Story like Donna Fletcher. I have read all of her books and Cree and Dawn are my favorite couple with Cree being my favorite hero. I can’t imagine the talent it takes to write a story where the heroine doesn’t talk. I was thoroughly hooked from page one until the very last page. Cree is a very strong character, being very alpha and bossy, but has such a wonderful, loving manner with Dawn. He was a strong leader and cared very much about “his” people. He was fair but firm. While this is a love story there is plenty of suspense, secrets you want to figure out and really evil people out to destroy Cree and Dawn. This author has made Dawn a very interesting character especially since she can’t speak but has managed a way for her to have “conversations” just as if she had a voice. This is a well-rounded plot as well as having a great “supporting cast”. I love the character of Cree and Dawn and hope this author plans many more stories revolving around these two and their friends.

Forbidden Highlander:
This is a continuation of Cree and Dawn’s love story with more secrets to be revealed and more evil to fight. Really great plot and loved the characters as most return from Highlander Unchained with the addition of a few more bad guys who want to destroy Cree and kill Dawn. While this is a love story there is plenty of suspense and nail-biting page turning. I’m looking forward to more Dawn and Cree from this author.

Dawn was born without a voice. She is completely silent...even her sighs. Fear reigns as the nefarious Cree is captured and Dawn is assigned to care for him...in all ways. Little did they know that Cree would get more information from Dawn's silence than expected. After all, the people treated her as if she were an idiot. In turn, they were proven the idiots.

Highlander Unchained: Book Two
This book continues where book one left off. Someone is trying to kill Dawn and no one has a clue why. She is only a voiceless peasant...isn't she? Secrets are old and deep and as they come to the surface—they bring unrest with them. Old Mary knows more than she will tell and so they have to dig deep themselves to find the answers.

Great characters and plot line. I really enjoyed both of these books and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
