Amelia Lamont never asked to unleash her inner vampire

WOW, a really good one!
How to describe it best? Maybe try this: take a a pint of starcrossed lovers (with the hero and heroine's species being mortal enemies), a zest of Twillight (our vampire heroine hates the monster she is and fights her bloodlust) and add vampire royalties with an old way of life to the mix.
Shake it and you've got the receipt. And it works really, really good!

When Amelia turns sixteen, her unknown vampire legacy manifests itself strongly on one fateful night, deeply frightening her. From that moment on, she'll try to master her bloodlust and avoid playing crazy killer in class full of classmates whose scents are sweeter than chocolate. Moving with her family, she soon meets Ty, the captain of the swim team whose blood compel her like nothing else. As their relationship evolve into strong feelings, they'll have to face the animosity of their friends and families and struggle to live their love.
All the characters are interesting and secrets are unravelled throughout the book. The plot is ingenious and treason is present all along. And the end is so tricky you can't see if our lovebirds will have a future together or not. It keeps you on your knees.
I hope the second book will come soon (no date set yet?).
If you're fans of paranormal novels, you HAVE to read it.
Enjoy!

The start of this story was hard to get into. It was as if the author was warming up but not quite sure where to go. I had to put it away and then start fresh again. Once I was past the first quarter, I was immersed. For Twillight readers, the love triangle will seem familiar.

All of the romantic scenes flowed well and were within context of the main plot. Amelia begins to accept who she is, not without much difficulty and confusion. She is a complex, witty and powerful character all bundled into one. This left me torn between feeling sorry for her and thinking of girl power. Outside of the first few chapters, this was a refreshing start to the series and I'll be eagerly starting Made by Design soon.

Must read

J.L. Myers wrote this book perfectly, spinning a web of lies, love and treachery. This is a great paced book, slowly revealing the secrets about Amelia. She has been through hell and back in her short life, a vampire in love with a werewolf, being sent away to a place that should have been safe, only to endure horrific acts, by the one she should have been able to trust. I don't want to give much away, just trust me this book will make you not want to sleep, or eat, just read and read. The imagination this Author has is truly amazing, the twists and turns keep your interest completely. I can't wait I'm starting the next book now woo hoo. One of the best books I've ever read and I read a lot.

I received a free review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion. Kind of a Romeo and Juliet meets Twilight meets Underworld. I loved the story. I think Troy and Marika were minute characters that the story could have lived without, but that's probably just because I didn't particularly like them lol. In retrospect, they helped moved the story along. I like that Amelia is a strong female lead. I can't wait to read book 2.

I loved this book! For a first book, it had all the necessary requirements - romance, strong characters, and a great storyline!
The heroine (Amelia) is strong but sometimes whiny (which is maturity related) and the heroes (Ty, Kendrick, and Marcus - so many to choose from) just saying WOW! I couldn't decide if I was rooting for a vamp or a wolf... And throw in a great brother, a clueless mom, a strange girl, and some disgruntled pack members and you have a great supporting cast. It definitely kept me in emotional turmoil and there is definitely that story twist you don't expect and the cliffhanger ending (complete with an evil villain - hmmmm) ... A great paranormal read! Can't wait til the next one!

This was my first time reading this author, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The story-line was enjoyable and the author did a great job at character development. Each character had very different personalities that just added to the enjoyment of the story.

The story is of a young girl, named Amelia (16), who is suddenly thrust into a world that she never knew existed. One where things nightmare are made of, with shape-shifters, werewolves, and vampires (which she shockingly discovers she is) exist. Her journey of discovery is not for the faint of heart, and Amelia must endure love, temptation, loss, danger, tragedy, crushing beyal, and even death on her journey. But with the help of her twin brother Dorian, her best friend Kendrick, and her werewolf boyfriend Ty by her side, Amelia discovers there is more to her than meets the eye, more than she could have ever imagined. Her life was "created" with purpose. What will she discover next? Who can she trust? Will the full truth finally be revealed?

This book has everything from a "Romeo & Juliet" romance, danger, mystery and suspense. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. It would also be a great read for older teens, and young adults alike. I look forward to reading the rest of the serious.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoy this book! This is book one of the series. I would like to address some things from the negative reviews first.

Spoilers:

First off, I take book reviews like the Holy Grail. I will not sugar coat. Books are like my best friends. Let continue this review.

When you read this book, remember the main character is a teenager. For most of us, we did stupid things as being a teenager. Do not judge the main character without looking in the mirror. Remember, how you felt at 16? Most of us, it was an awkward time. Now imagine you are a 16 years old and you just found out you are a vampire. Things you thought that did not exist. Everyone handle things dealt to them, in their own way. Again, this is a teenager. Not all teenagers are the same nor are all adults the same. There are folks who are 30 years old yet behave in a an 12 year old manner.

At the age of eighteen, most of us think we know it all. Think about this. With all the knowledge you have now, and you can turn the clock and be 16 years old again, what would you change?

This is why I give this book 4 stars. It was an awesome fantasy young adult book! I am a 39 year old female. I have no shame with my age for I am Blessed to still be here on earth. Life throws curveballs. During these times, it makes us stronger. We better understand as we get older that life should always be cherished. As we get older most of us realized, how different we are now then when we were 16. While that seems like a given fact. Sometimes we forget this, and judge.

Another issue to address is the Twilight comments. When you read a book, Goodreads would have recommendations of what you have read. This book is recommended if you like Twilight series. While this book has some similarity to Twilight, this book is in a different ball park. For those that are die hard Twilight fans, they might feel this book is trying to be like Twilight This book is not!

Again, this is a book recommended if you like Twilight. If one disagree with that, it is not the book fault nor the author fault. Do not read this book thinking it going be like Twilight. If you do, you would not give this story a fair chance.

Read this book that shows new and old tales of being a vampire.Think outside of the box. Again, remember of your teenage years but as a vampire. For me, it would have made 16 even more awkward. Enjoy the adventure!

I'd been on a stretch of YA books when I read J. L. Myers' debut novel, What Lies Inside. I was a bit worried at first, I'll admit. After all, I was holding in my hands yet another book about a young woman-turned-vampire, forbidden romance, and seething supernatural politics.

Then I started reading. I met Amelia, and my opinion changed right there. Amelia is a strong, intelligent young woman who has just discovered her vampire heritage. She's awkward and angry and utterly human in her struggles to understand what she's become and how she fits into a suddenly strange world. I cheered inside as I watched her mature and grow over the course of the book, coming to terms with the myriad changes in her life.

But the book is more than just Amelia, and more than a story of self-discovery. It's intrigue, danger, and steamy romance. The other characters are just as well written. They felt real, and perhaps more importantly, relatable. Kendrick, her best friend and her rock; Marcus, the boy she doesn't dare trust; and Ty, the dangerous classmate she finds herself falling for, even as she struggles to keep her newborn thirst under control. I was able to put myself in each of their shoes, to understand their motivations and actions - even when the results of those actions resulted in terrible consequences.

Myers does an incredible job of bringing each of her characters to life, of giving them unique and textured voices and full personalities. She draws you into the story. Her own voice is incredible too, with unique turns of phrase that catch at you and make you take notice. I can't wait to read her second book and see what happens to the characters I've come to love.

Absolutely an amazing read! I really enjoyed this story. It is really well written and has a lot of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing on what's going to happen next and what everything means. I loved the characters. Amelia is awesome and I loved her from the start. Ty, the main love interest, is great too. I loved them together. I also love Kendrick, which to be honest made it a little hard because of his feelings for Amelia. I was a little torn because I enjoyed all of their characters soo much. There is a ton of action in this story and plenty of intrigue. I really enjoyed figuring out what was going on. Some people might feel that there are quite a few similarities to twilight but I didn't really feel that way. It is written differently and things are definitely different, though vampires and werewolves still don't like each other lol. This was definitely worth the read and I can't wait for the next one in the series.

FYI, this book was given to me, for an honest review.

This book is quite the addiction! IN the beginning, I admit that I could have let it go and not gone back, but about a third of the way through I was addicted and I couldn't put it down! Defiantly a book worth getting if you can! I loved the interaction with Ty and Amelia... though Kendrick was rather annoying in the middle of the book. I could have lived without certain characters, like Troy, and Vanessa.. since they didn't seem to add to the plot much, but overall.. DAMN! This is good! I have no read pros or cons because this book was good. G-O-O-D GOOD!

This was Romeo and Juliet meet Twilight. I liked the idea of finding out you are a vampire via a dream. This book also drew me in by making Amelia the only one in her family that did not know their heritage. As a non-popular student I can understand why attacked the most popular boy, the football player. Then when she moved, and met Ty, I was so happy for her. However all is not what it seems. Ty is not human. I did not like the cliffhanger. However the character development in this book was great and Amelia definitely was not the same shy person. I am giving this book a 3/5. I was given a copy to review form OrangeBerry Book Tours, however all opinions are my own.

I thought this was a great YA paranormal novel. I didn't care so much that the story was almost exact to Twilight's. However, the author added quite a few different things (than Twilight) and had plenty of action that it kept me interested. I was surprised with the ending and it kept me up until 1 AM because I could not stop reading! This is the first book that I have read by this author and I feel myself leaning toward purchasing the next in the series! :)

Amelia always thought she was just a human. She didn’t even know that other species existed. She and her brother were turned when they were very young to save their lives. Now that Amelia is sixteen her hunger for blood cannot be controlled any longer. When she’s out with her best friend she almost kills someone. Amelia is very shaken up about this, because she doesn’t understand what is happening to her. Now that the truth is out Amelia and her family are moving across town, so that she can learn to control her urges and start over. Will she be able to adjust to her new life?

At school Amelia meets Ty. He’s gorgeous, she feels like she already knows him and he smells delicious. Amelia needs all of her strength not to attack him for his blood. When it turns out that Ty is also interested in her and knows what she is, Amelia has a choice to make. Ty is actually her enemy and it’s not common to form a relationship with them. When secrets are inevitably coming out will Amelia and Ty be able to stay in love?

Amelia has a lot of trouble coming to terms with the fact that she’s a vampire. She just wants to be normal. Even though she does like the positive changes, like enhanced hearing, smell and sight, she finds it difficult to control her bloodlust. Her twin brother has significantly less problems with his new life. Amelia is a typical teenager in a lot of ways, but she also shows that she isn't a pushover. She stands up for herself and is a loyal daughter and sister. Because of the vivid descriptions of Amelia's emotions I could easily imagine how it must feel to suddenly be forced to deal with a new world, one that is so completely different from the world of a normal teenager. Fortunately Amelia isn't alone and I liked it a lot to read about her family and the bond they share. They help each other in every possible way and that’s what a family should be like.

What Lies Inside is a story filled with action and suspense. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, because I wanted to find out what would happen next. J.L. Myers kept surprising me with many unexpected twists and turns. I love reading stories about vampires, which is why I couldn’t resist to read What Lies Inside. The main characters are well developed and this made it very easy to connect with them. J.L. Myers has written an amazing story, which kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through to the unpredictable end.

Amelia reaches her sixteenth birthday just to find out that she is a vampire. Killing for blood is forbidden, but she first has to learn how to control her thirst before she even encounters humans. Her friend Kendrick is also a vampire and wants to help her, but when they move away, he can't help her anymore. Now, she and her twin brother Dorian have to go to a human school and learn to control themselves. Amelia is terrified that she will slip up and drain everyone, but one human named Ty seems to attract her. She can't keep herself away, even when his friends try to push her, and she doesn't know how she is going to be able to control herself. However, she starts to notice some not-fully-human traits about him, and she starts to wonder if he will be what she has been looking for all along.

I have had this book sitting in my library for forever, but I never picked it up. Now, I am so glad that I was able to read the prequel Fallen Angel, and I am so happy that I took the time to read this novel.

I have to admit, the love triangle was actually rather refreshing to me. Even though it was there, it did not get in the way of the storyline, and Amelia always knew who she wanted. She wasn't trying to drag multiple people on at the same time.

I also enjoyed the fact that Amelia was dangerous. I did not want her to be dumbed down or made into some sort of sickly sweet vampire to show that she was still human. She was still strong, and she was still deadly, whether she liked it or not. SHe just had to learn how to truly control herself.

Even though this novel warns of sexual situations, and the cover seemed rather sexual, I never felt uncomfortable throughout this entire novel, and there was never a complete scene in the novel. If you are a 16+ YA fan, you can most likely handle and enjoy this.

The pacing of this novel was perfect. As soon as I started it, I flew right through it in a matter of hours. The only reason why I didn't finish it all in one sitting was because of my schedule.

I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a fresh vampire romance young adult novel with a strong female main character.

I am not into vampires. Well not after twilight, which I really liked. So seeing the book cover for What Lies Inside, I by passed it. However, someone did recommend it and told me that it is really good. So I decided to read the description, which I have to admit caught my attention. I then decided to give it a go, hoping that I have not made a mistake. But I am so glad that I read it! This is the first book by this author that I have read and to begin with I was thinking negative thoughts but as the story progressed I couldn't stop turning the page to find out what's going to happen next. There are twist and turns which keeps you guessing until the very end. There is suspense, a bit of mystery and romance of course!
The negative that I have about this book is the female characters. I found the mother to be naive in the sense that by not telling the kids about things she believes she is protecting them. Instead they get into more trouble. The main character to begin with I liked until she started to not notice/question things that she see's/hears in front of her. That for me was my biggest peeve in this book. She questioned things at the beginning then I found that she stopped after she got some answers at the beginning. Even towards the end I had a few questions that I would have asked if I was in her position. The only female character I liked is Vanessa. She is hiding something but we don't know what yet. The male characters I loved. My favorite has to be Ty. I loved the fact that he did not give up on his love. Even when there is a misunderstanding he would try, try and try again to explain and win her over. To me that is what true love is. I found that Amelia didn't fight for him as much as he did.
I really liked this book so much even with the negative things that I mentioned. Looking forward to finding out what's going to happen next.
I would recommend this book!
No sexual content except for kissing. There is some violence and profanity.

Intrigue, drama, romance and lots of heart-stopping supernatural characters; these are a handful of reasons why What Lies Inside is one of my new favorite books. What Lies Inside is a young adult paranormal romance with lots of thrills and deception. Fair warning – once you start reading you will not want to stop. Now I’m over here obsessing to buy the next one.

I love the characters; each one is unique and plays an important role. The author has written an extremely engaging and detailed story. There is close to 450 pages and every one of them is well used to transport the readers into a heart-stopping ride.

What Lies Inside is the first book in the Blood Bound series. I feel these books are most comparable to Twilight , but very different in many areas. While romance plays an important and prominent role in the series, there is a bigger picture surrounding the star-crossed lovers and explores deeper into history and vampire politics.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and highly recommend this series. I will be impatiently waiting to devour book two.

I voluntarily received and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

What Lies Inside (A Vampire Paranormal Romance)
By: J. L. Meyers
Genre: Young Adult

Amelia and her twin, Dorian, have just turned 16. Like other kids their age, their lives are filled with teenaged angst. How could they ever know that things were just about to get worse! Imagine their surprise to discover that 16 years earlier, while in utero, they were infected with the vampire virus! Now, not only must they deal with acne, homework and ordinary teen rebellion but suddenly they’re also faced with an incredible urge to eat their schoolmates! Throw in a few mal-tempered werewolves, a Romeo and Juliet romance and betrayal of the highest order and you have a story worth reading!

I have discovered over the last few years that I really enjoy well written stories in the Young Adult genre, even though I’m a grandmother. THIS is a well written story.

I will admit that I felt the beginning was a little rushed… In just the first chapter or so, we’re introduced to the twins and their new-found abilities, insecurities and cravings all at the same time. In addition, we meet their mother, their uncle and Amelia’s best friend Kendrick (who all have a secret of their own) in such quick order that I had trouble keeping all the players separated in my mind. It seemed as if the author was very excited about her story—so much so that she just wanted to get to it A.S.A.P. I would have preferred to get to know the kids a little better first, as just regular teens, then have the vampire story introduced. (This is why I rated the story with just a 4-star rating. I wish the star system worked differently. I really earns a 4 3/4.) HOWEVER, once I found my balance I got caught up very quickly and really began to enjoy the goings-on.

What Lies Inside is the first book in what promises to be a very interesting series.

J. L. Meyers has real talent and is a very imaginative story-teller. There are several twists in this story—which I will not reveal here. No spoilers from this quarter—and the author very skillfully raises just enough red herrings to keep the waters muddied to keeper the reader unaware of the truth until the penultimate moment.

I truly enjoyed this story and would recommend it to lovers of the paranormal and young adult genres.

3.4 "Bound" stars

Ok so I know this is under young adult genre told in the girl's (Amelia's) POV at 16 years old but what I didn't expect is how almost through out the book, I kept on seeing her still as an emotional, immature teen who just discovered herself to be a vampire.
The story starts at Amelia's realization that she's becoming a vampire and then the next few chapters will be about her and her twin brother coping up and trying to live with the humans again.
I felt that the love interest became predictable especially because of the conflict between their races. There are some parts that I would say almost the same as Twilight just reversed with Amelia being the new vampire and the weaker of the two.
The trials she experienced while in her relationship is somewhat big issues but for me handled a little immaturely (okay hence their age but still I have read some YA genre with more mature heroines such as the ones made by Cassandra Clare.
When finally the real villain surfaced in the book, it's already on the last 35% that's why I felt it's kinda rushed especially in terms of character development.
I know the author is trying to make the situation full of mystery to make it unpredictable but these are the twists that felt rushed that's when I would say these events, character build ups doesn't make any sense to end up like that.
I did felt like putting it down early on but curious to see how this will end and it's a cliffhanger.
There's potential but if only Amelia is given more mature decisions, skills that helped her loved ones for me to believe her unself centered then I might have liked her more.

What a great new series! If you're a fan of Twilight or Vampire Academy you'll love this book. In a world where vampires and werewolves live secretly among regular humans, Amelia and Dorian are high school students (and twins) who have been vampires since birth. Special measures were taken to suppress their true nature, but those measures are wearing off and the twins are confused by their new existence with super speed and incredible thirst for blood. But they're not the only supernatural creatures out there, as they soon discover when they encounter a group of werewolves who attend their school. When Amelia falls in love with one of them, their lives become a series of dangerous secrets to keep.

Meanwhile, there is a sinister plan to use the twins' power and a mystery surrounding their personal history. The plot is filled with exciting twists, and the twins have to figure out who to trust in this world filled with secrets and betrayal. The story is told from Amelia's perspective. Since she has only just found out that vampires exist, let alone that she, her brother, and her mother are vampires, there is a lot to discover. What powers does she have, and why isn't she like other turned vampires? Who can she trust, and who will betray her? How will she hide her forbidden romance?

What a fun and enjoyable read. This book is truly one of a kind. I just loved reading it. First off, J.L. Myers has done an amazing job with the unique take of vampires and shape shifters. I liked that the heroine was a vampire. It was pretty cool seeing a vampire perspective in a human world. In addition, all the paranormal creatures in the story were super cool. They were hot, yeah, but they weren't ungodly perfect either.

Secondly, the chemistry between Amelia and Ty. They had so much chemistry that it was literally sizzling the pages. The kissing scenes were super sweet. I also like how both of the characters had their own interesting qualities. Amelia is super strong and I liked that she is resilient. Tyler is such a sweet book boyfriend. I really wanted him to be real.

Lastly, the entire action and over all pacing was really good. I liked how there were twists and turns thrown in however, there was enough that the book kept me on my toes while at the same time letting me become emotionally invested in the characters. Also, the writing is really good. There is a lot of showing and feel to the writing.

In summary, one click this awesome YA PNR romance. It may seem like Twilight in the beginning, but trust me it is not. It is so unique and it features a heroine who is super strong and someone you want to root for.

J.L. Meyers does a great job of telling a compelling story with a beautiful command of language, setting and description. Her characters are well-defined and believable and I especially enjoyed how skillfully she wove in her foreshadowing of things to come.

J.L. Meyers lays a solid foundation at the beginning of the book for everything that follows. She ends the book solidly so it can be read as a stand-alone story, yet she still weaves in the elements required to set the stage for the next book in the series elegantly and unobtrusively. J.L. Meyers clearly understands what makes a good story and writes a solid ending here. I'm very grateful for that!

The author is very approachable and open to constructive criticism, a quality lacking in many authors today. There were a few typo/grammar errors remaining, despite repeated proof-reading by the author, her editor and others. She assures me this will be resolved shortly.

I look forward to the rest of this series as this book is well-written, well plotted and a lot of fun. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the vampire genre. You won't be disappointed.

Amelia Athobry-Lamont is a normal teenager until she starts transforming into a vampire ... so it's off to a new city and new school for Amelia and her family. As if it wasn't bad enough that Amelia is fighting off her bloodlust, handsome classmate Ty Malau, whose potent scent makes her mouth water, wants to date her. When Ty beats Amelia's brother Dorian in a swim race, Amelia agrees to go out with him to find out his secrets. Amelia finds out plenty, such as the fact that her kind and his kind are enemies, but the more she gets to know Ty, the more she starts falling for him, and vice versa. Their families aren't happy when they find out but Amelia and Ty are determined to make it work, but with people plotting against them, do they even stand a chance?

J.L. Myers delivers an action-packed, exciting and steamy story so full of twists and turns that you won't be able to put it down. I can't wait to read Made By Design, Book 2 of the Blood Bound series.
