This handy guidebook covers the Mojave Desert, Death Valley, Joshua Tree National Monument, and the Antelope Valley. It also includes in its 19 chapters Palmdale and Lancaster (and points east), Rosamond and Boron areas, Edwards Air Force Base, Randsburg mining town, US 395, Barstow and Calico. Mr. Leadabrand also covers extinct towns that once dotted the area. He gives brief histories and toponomies, and information about the sites when the book was published (1966). Authored by an expert in Southern California wilderness lore, Russ Leadabrand, the copy I own was obviously used by an editor (the author?) with intentions of expanding it into a 2-vol. work. Given the areas covered, a 2-vol. work seems wise.
somebody donated this book and i found it in a free bin. it is a nice guide to mojave desert, but i will always be shocked when natives are called "indians." it is very educational and provides how to get to the places that are described.
i definitely reccommend this to any reader who wants to know more about the old western history of the desert.
