Destiny Rising is an extended edition of Outsystem and A Path in the Darknes, the first two books in The Intrepid Saga. It is re-structured, re-edited, and contains over 100 pages of new content, including a new opening to the series.

The Sol Space Federation has stood for a over thousand years, controlling every world within Sol's heliopause.

Lieutenant Colonel Tanis Richards has given her life for the Terran Space Force time and time again. But now, deep within the hollowed out core of the Toro asteroid, the military has asked too much.

Commander Joseph Evens has flown starfighters in the deep black for years, but when he is sent on a mission to blockade a federation member's capital world, he wonders what he has put his faith in.

The Sol Space Federation has bound the worlds and habitats of the Sol System together since the end of the second Solar War, but that was long ago, and the old alliances, which were forged with the Phobos Accords, are now all but forgotten.

Beyond Sol's heliopause, the Future Generation Terraformers create new worlds for humanity to spread to, and back home, the Generation Ship Service commissions great colony ships to reach those worlds.

One such ship is the GSS Intrepid, and it is on this ship that Joseph and Tanis meet after deciding that they wish to leave humanity's home system and see what future there is amongst the stars.

They may have picked the wrong ship. From eco-terrorists, to rival colony ships, to corporations and governments. No one wants the Intrepid to ever leave the Sol System. It will fall to Tanis and Joe to save the Intrepid and earn their place on its roster in their struggle to get outsystem.

M. D. Cooper is a New York Times bestselling author who has envisioned a rich future for humanity, one where planet-sized megastructures house trillions of humans, but traveling between the stars still takes decades, or even centuries.

Malorie Cooper likes to think of herself as a dreamer and a wanderer, yet her feet are firmly grounded in reality.

A ‘maker’ from an early age, Malorie loves to craft things, from furniture, to cosplay costumes, to a well-spun tale, she can’t help but to create new things every day.

A rare extrovert writer, she loves to hang out with readers and people in general. If you meet her at a convention, she just might be rocking a catsuit, cosplaying one of her own characters, or maybe her latest favorite from Overwatch!

She shares her home with a brilliant young girl, her wonderful wife (who also writes), a cat that chirps at birds, a never-ending list of things she would like to build, and ideas…

The best thing I can say about this book is I LOVE it! I started reading at the recommendation of a friend. During the course of a month, I binge read the entire series that was available including the Perseus Gate side series. With apologies to Mr Cooper, binge reading makes for difficult reviews as the story of individual novels blur together. I’m now re-reading the entire series and reviewing appropriately.
This is the first of the Tanis Richards story arc (main story arc) and actually is comprised of the first two novels Outsystem and A Path in the Darkness.
Tanis Richards is an amazing protagonist. Her strength, drive, determination, and bravado make her an excellent heroine. She takes her lumps and continues fighting. She makes mistakes, but doesn’t give up, and kicks some serious butt. In my opinion, she’s an excellent role model. Where ever Tanis goes, her AI Angela goes as well. I often forget that they are two separate entities but their dialog and camaraderie show just how much they care for each other.
I love the Aeon 14 universe Mr Cooper has created. He shows the gritty underbelly and the polished façade with equal skill. While most the concepts and technology are not unique to his world, the way he brings it all together is inspiring. Central to the technology are the concept of sentient AIs. At times it’s difficult to remember that Tanis and her AI Angela are two separate entities sharing one body.
Pros:
• Strong heroine who makes mistakes and lives up to them.
• Action. This is an action packed story with some drama influences.
• Technology. I’m a science geek and I love how the world integrates so many Sci-fi concepts in a believable way. I’m especially impressed with the body modifications used by Tanis to go undercover and the descriptions of what happens to the fighter pilots to allow them to survive the intense forces pressing against them during maneuvers.
• Humor. There is some unbelievable humor. Interaction between Tanis and her AI is especially humorous.

Cons:
• Technology – Admittedly I’m a believer and I understand the concept behind the technology. For someone not into Sci-Fi it’s easy to see how technology is used to as a magic device to make the plot keep moving.

This is a very daunting series. There was a set of books I wanted to read but I thought since they're all on kindle unlimited I might as well start at the beginning, following the freely available reading order guide. This volume apparently covers the first two books (it is not two separate books though, so I suspect there are other differences). It starts slow, honestly the first half is more of a 3 star read but eventually hits a stride and becomes more fun and interesting. I did have a few issues with the characterizations, in particular that there's a lot of out of place "sexiness" both in female characters that are super sexualized and in things like the main character ending up randomly naked in various situations. I don't have a problem with sex in my sci-fi, it's just when it seems odd and out of place that it throws me. Some of the elements of Tanis's character draw heavily on tired stereotypes - she's a hardened soldier with no time for love, except for the one random guy who melts her heart (honestly without much work either). The whole story would have been improved by eliminating the UNNECESSARY HETEROSEXUALITY. (Ew, straight people)

That all aside, I liked the AI/human combo characters and I think that's a very interesting path to take, I hope I see more of it. AI and ship characters are always one of my favorite things, and that goes a long way towards redeeming this series. I also like all the details of ships and travel, though the acronyms got a bit much. And I love an excessively competent main character, which Tanis certainly is. She's definitely renegade though, and there's a brief but icky torture scene.

This book is very long and there are many seconds, especially at the beginning, that don't quite seem to fit in, but they do serve to introduce characters. I'm not totally sure I made the right choice starting here instead of with later books, but hopefully the momentum of the latter half of this book will continue.

I had already read Outsystem before this version came out. I want to focus on the value-added you get from the additional 100 pages. I felt they really do add to the story. Several of the characters from both Outsystem and A Path in the Darkness are given additional backstories. Not only does it provide the backstory for Tanis, but it also fills in the back stories for Jessica and Amanda.

I thought Jessica's was more crucial than Amanda's, but some readers may be divided on this. Without her backstory, Tanis' initial evaluation of Jessica in A Path in the Darkness may be more mysterious and contain more narrative heft, but they are able to get enough detail about Jessica's career to make the mystery less salient. The benefit of the back story is that you better understand her personality, giving her character more depth.

This is basically book one and two of the Intrepid Saga, but with some added content as well as a much more streamlined timeline within the two books. Some chapters have been moved around from the originals, which actually works better in my opinion.

The original introduction of Tanis Richards was a bit lackluster, but we get to see firsthand what kind of person she is through tough leadership decisions and a desire to keep her fellow service members alive and intact. If you haven't already picked up the Intrepid Saga Omnibus, this collection is definitely a good start!

The only downside is that the third book did not receive such an update. However, it didn't really need it that much to begin with... but it still would've been nice to get the full saga in one collection since the Omnibus is the old versions of books one and two.

For me this is a recap with a few extras added in as I've already read the first two books. The story however, has progressed quite a bit since these first two and I really enjoyed going back and having the refresher. There was a lot I missed the first time, and a lot I couldn't remember from when I read them way back when. I'm glad I've reread them. For me, they've helped pull things together and form a much more comprehensive picture in my mind. I also liked going back and really noted the difference in the characters. They've definitely progressed over time. I actually kind of miss the earlier Joe and Tanis. They seem so mature now!

A repackage of Outsystem and A Path in the Darkness, with quite a bit of new content and a bit of re-ordering of existing content. A good read as always, I enjoyed reading the new content and re-reading the old. Not sure of the re-ordering, changing the beginning / opening of the story does shift the tone a bit, but overall still a great book. I do prefer when re-reading them though to re-read them in the original formats :)

Nice starter or Finisher for the Fan

This is a great start for those new to the series or if you want to complete your collection. This might not suit everyone as this is redone collection so if you have the first two books this might be a pass. However the re-editing brings something extra as the universe as grown so much here soon think this was needed for those coming into an increasingly large and complex universe.

This is basically the backstory of Tanis, Joe, the Intrepid. As others have stated it is an excellent book and I really enjoyed it.
This series is fantastic but even with the reading guide which is almost no help it is confusing to get the order correct. I decided just to do Kindle unlimited trial for a few months and read as many as possible. After this it will be probably Building Victoria.

Excellent Sci Fi for adult readers

Excellent book with plenty of action, tech and wide range of characters. The character is a strong female with excellent military background and tactics. The AI's that are introduced are believable and and a depth of interaction with the humans very well. I definitely enjoyed books 1 and 2 (which I obtained together in the two volume omnibus) enough to purchase volume three, something I seldom do. Highly recommended.

space marines against space abominations, psi and space drama..

DNF at 6%. The plot is not my thing. The military invades an asteroid without real reconnaissance because there might be something sinister going on but worries what people could think. When they find that there actually is a threat and deal with it everybody is shocked about the loss of life...

Very Sci-fi!

Enjoyed it! Lots of thought went into the main characters but book one ( or is it two?) ended with some recently introduced characters playing key roles. Thought that a bit odd. Anyway. A bit of a cliffhanger if you can call it that but I’m still interested in seeing how it turns out. So a “more” rating from me despite the violence.

Start of a great series.

Started the series later on. Good to go back and read the origins. Cooper has created a fascinating universe.

Few minor editing issues, likely due to the combining of the books, but overall negligible.

Good pace and plenty of action. It was as much a spy, political and action thriller as a sci-fi space opera. Straightforward and enjoyable escapism.

Hows this for an endorsement, I've already pre-ordered everything that isn't out.

Mass Effect/Bioware should have hired you instead what we got with ME: Andromeda.
