Men were designed, created, and commanded to bear responsibility, but our history of failure in this area stretches all the way back to Adam. Today, irresponsibility is considered normal, even a birthright. Jim Wilson outlines the causes and results of this failure, the biblical principles and characteristics that define a responsible man, and how men can apply them both in their own lives and in raising their sons.
Masculinity does not have to be proved with muscularity, sexual prowess, or bragging. True masculinity is established by taking up the responsibility God has given you.
Jim Wilson has worked as a pastor and director of Community Christian Ministries (Moscow, Idaho) for over forty years. Before that, he served in the Navy as an officer for nine years and then with Officer's Christian Fellowship for another twelve years. Jim has authored a number of books, including How to Be Free from Bitterness, and is well-known for his practical Bible teaching on relationships and evangelism. He was married to his wife, Bessie, from 1952 until her death in 2010, and is the father of four, grandfather of fifteen (one of whom is in heaven), and great-grandfather of twenty-five and counting.
Listened to this short booklet on Audiobook. Great practical Christianity teaching on biblical manhood. It is concise yet convicting. It’s cool to see how many of the principles laid out in this booklet are now taught by his son, Douglas Wilson in his writings on the family.
One memorable point is a man who wants authority without responsibility will become a self serving tyrant.
Another memorable point was you want you give your sons responsibility that are a little bit outside their abilities to stretch and grow them, but not too much as to bring them to despair. This point can also be applied to me, being willing to undertake things that are a bit outside my comfortability without grumbling.
As always with Jim Wilson, this is straight to the point, doesn’t over complicate things, and takes God at his word. Solid advice from a man who lived it out well. Worth another read someday.
Real brief and doesn't actually hit the "how-to" until the very end - so I took a star off for a misnomerish title. But good content, and covers the importance and duty of men TO BE responsible.
More of a long-form article than a "book," but this one is simple, succinct, convicting, practical, and properly balanced. Very much so worth the read!
The most powerful thing for me is the legacy Brother Wilson leaves behind via Douglas Wilson and N. D. Wilson by clinging to the principles outlined in this short article.
With characteristic wisdom and thorough reliance on Scripture, Jim Wilson discusses what it means to be a responsible Christian man. A very worthwhile read.
