From the creative team of Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti and John Timms, this storyline explodes out of the blockbuster DC Universe Rebirth event. Comics’ craziest couple face off in HARLEY QUINN: REBIRTH DELUXE EDITION BOOK 1, a hardcover collection of the first two best-selling paperback volumes.
Since relocating from Gotham City to Brooklyn’s Coney Island, Harley Quinn has transformed her apartment building into a haven for freaks, strays and other unstable vigilante antihero-types. With her freak-show friends, bestie Poison Ivy, other bestie Red Tool and the Gang of Harleys by her side, Harley’s ready to face all of Brooklyn’s deadliest threats—from zombie armies and giant robots to punk-rock gangs and department store Santas.
But the one thing she’s not ready for? The return of a certain Mistah J. He’s promising to make amends, but not even Harley would be willing to give that whack job a second chance. Right?
Amanda Conner started out in comics working small projects for Marvel and Archie while working as an illustrator for New York ad agencies Kornhauser and Calene and Kidvertisers. working a number of launches and campaigns such as Arm & Hammer, PlaySchool and Nickelodeon.
However, loving comic books and cartooning the most, Amanda found herself working for Marvel on their Barbie line (much of Amanda’s covers inspired designs for the line of Barbie toys), Disney line which included the Gargoyles books. At the same time she was illustrating “Soul Searchers & Co.” for Claypool Comics and worked on other Marvel projects, such as Excalibur for the X-Men line and “Suburban Jersey Ninja She-Devils”.
During an assignment for Crusade (‘Tomoe’) she and Jimmy Palmiotti became a real team as penciller/inker.
Amanda then moved on to do what is probably one of her best known works. She did several years as penciller on the hit series “Vampirella” for Harris Comics and drafted 24 issues. While illustrating “Vampirella”, Amanda worked with the top writers in the field, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar and Warren Ellis.
Continuing to expand her horizons, Amanda illustrated the best-selling crossover “Painkiller Jane vs. the Darkness”, and went on to work on “Painkiller Jane” #0 (the origin book). She also wrote and illustrated a story for “Kid Death and Fluffy”.
Since then, Amanda has worked on many of the top titles in comics such as “Lois Lane”, “Codename: Knockout”, and “Birds of Prey” for D.C. Comics Vertigo line, “X-Men Unlimited” for Marvel, co-created “Gatecrasher” for Blackbull Comics, and “The Pro”, an Eisner nominated creator owned book for Image Comics with Jimmy Palmiotti and Garth Ennis. Recently she worked on the highly publicized Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre series with Eisner winning creator Darwyn Cooke.
Amanda’s work can also be seen outside the comic book community in such places as ABC’S Nightline, the New York Times, Mad Magazine, the new sci-fi Stan lee “So You Want to be a Superhero” series and the upcoming Disney Underdog movie character designs for film and television, character designs for the Los Angeles Avengers stadium football team and is featured in a Biography magazine commercial on A&E. Amanda does spot illustrations in “Revolver” magazine each month and has had a huge success with the JSA Powergirl miniseries in previous years, each issue going into 3rd printings.
She continuously produces cover work for Marvel Comics, DC Comics and an assortment of independent titles.
With PaperFilms co-founder Jimmy Palmiotti, they are currently working on the highly received Harley Quinn series and other Harley Quinn related titles for DC Comics, in addition to several upcoming DC related projects. Garnering national attention and sales results, the team continues to receive accolades for their work on these titles. The new relaunch of Harley Quinn for DC in the Rebirth line garnered an estimated 250,000 copies ordered.
This volume felt very disjointed and quite frankly, all over the show. I mean, zombies? Really?! The only issue I really liked was the Poison Ivy one and punk Harley was pretty cool. The issues with the Joker were very anti-climactic and the Christmas special was pretty terrible. Hopefully this run will improve.
If you love Harley, you LOVE all of the issues collected in this omnibus. Her character development, her connections to other characters... omg. Just perfection.
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy flirting era… YAAAAAAAAAAAAS!
Harley Quinn is very much the female Deadpool. The books are very similar, just Harley Quinn has sexier art. (Insert Deadpool arguing the point here.)
Overall this is entertaining with good art. What you expect is pretty much what you get. It's not Watchmen, but it's fun.
This volume has a zombie invasion, a sexy vacation, a Santa nation and a Jokerization. Yep, I thought of all that just now.
In any case, by this point you probably know whether you like Harley Quinn or not, so if you like her you'll enjoy this volume. If not, it's probably not good enough to change your mind.
I admit, I really was not looking forward to reading this one. Unfortunately, the first 4 issues of Volume 1 did nothing to increase my desire. The entire storyline was ridiculous - everyone becomes infected with a zombie virus after a baby alien crash lands on Earth and is chopped up and made into hot dogs. The townspeople eat the hot dogs and turn into zombies. It was frighteningly bad. Once I got through those first 4 issues, the story arcs got much better and in Volume 2 there was some incredible character development. I actually found myself looking forward to reading the last few issues in this book. I have grown particularly fond of Red Tool as well and I'm totally shipping him and Harley! I would definitely recommend this title, just bear in mind the first couple issues are complete garbage. I'm looking forward to Rebirth Book 2 (volumes 3 and 4).
I’ve always enjoyed the madness of HQ & It’s a fun easy, silly but ultimately enjoyable comic to read. It may not have the depth or gripping plot of some comics but then that’s not what I buy this particular ticket for. The art is bright & colourful & perfect for HQ’s world. Plus the deluxe edition houses the tons of variant covers in the back & admiring all the different styles is a treat. Nicely presented as the first two trades combo makes a nice package. Look forward to no2 (or technically 3/4 - I am a sucker for hardcovers)
Harley goes punk, Harley goes roller-derby, there's a lotta cool stuff in this volume that I really like. And for the most part the artwork is sweet. But then there are some issues where I didn't dig the artwork quite so much, and there are some story elements that went too far into silly territory and felt dumb and annoying rather than clever and entertaining. So, a mixed bag, but decently enjoyable.
The best collection of Harley Quinn comics I've seen yet. Most of these books that have a collection of 7 or 9 comics has one weird one in the mix. But not this one. They are all great Harley Quinn adventures, romance, and violence. Complete with a good flowing storyline, and with callbacks to past characters and plot points. Even references to the exact issue they are referring to.
I enjoyed this deluxe edition, the overall storyline was a little scattered, as the Joker came into the picture, things got better. Also Harley and Ivy's on again, off again, little romance, added a lot to the story.
I'm sorry. I just don't like Harley Quinn titles. :( I personally don't find the jokes funny, and since this is trying to be more of a joke title, I'm outta luck.
