Dustin Nguyen is a comic book writer/artist who has worked for DC Comics and WildStorm since 2000. He has since worked on such titles as Jet with Dan Abnett, Wildcats v3.0 with Joe Casey, Batman with Judd Winick, Manifest Eternity with Scott Lobdell, and the latest revamp of The Authority, The Authority: Revolution, with Ed Brubaker. He was the artist on a six-issue arc of Superman/Batman entitled "Torment", with writer Alan Burnett.
With issue #840, Nguyen became the regular ongoing artist with writer Paul Dini on one of DC's flagship titles, Detective Comics until issue #852. He is now the ongoing artist along with Derek Fridolfs and writer Paul Dini on the series, Batman: Streets of Gotham.
(1) I love the first story (which is about Thanksgiving) and the super adorable artwork (and the Fat-man balloon!), but I must admit Penguin's outrage at the massacre of turkeys is actually righteous...not to mention the poor Native Americans...
(2) In the world of Li'l Gotham, everyone is so, so adorable and cute!!!!! *melt under the cuteness*
(3) The Halloween story is so much fun! But those poor supervillains! They only wanted a night out and eating good! Yet Batman spoiled it for them, what a meanie. XD
(4) Mini-Huntress is so lovely with purple watercolor!
(5) Even the Joker becomes a cute and seemingly a lot more harmless criminal in this world!
(6) The al Ghul family's dinning with the Gordons! It's just super cool!
(7) Although some of the stories are quite silly, I'm totally looking forward for more of this series!
One of the strengths of Batman and his supporting cast is how versatile they are. They could be dark and brooding all the time, but they can also be superheroic and inspiring and, in the case of Li'l Gotham, they can be cute and charming.
Though not all of the jokes land, overall the quality of the stories is great. There's no question about Dustin Nguyen's talent as an artist and here, along with Derek Fridolfs, he manages to make the perfect combination of charm and fun. The stories may vary in terms of quality but most of them are great, making great use of Batman's huge cast.
This is the kind of story I wish DC did more; simple enough for all-ages, but full of easter eggs for older fans.
Even if you're not a comic fan this is a great comedy book for all ages with great artwork by Fridolfs that brings out the child like fun and wonder of being a super hero (or sidekick)
▼really enjoyed and actually made me giggle. love all the clever jokes, puns, dynamics, etc (like penguin liberating the turkeys on thanksgiving). all the little easter eggs o(≧▽≦)o
▼the addition of colour in these was also cool. watercolours are pretty✨ definitely prefer it over the black and white of "secret hero society."
▼the holiday theme was cute. enjoyed how some weren't actually holidays but were thrown in anyways (like comicon).
▼probably would have read sooner if i knew my son damian was in it. although, he’s more little kid than precocious. eh still cute, we just don't take him very seriously.
▼jason still has daddy issues without a seat ready for him at christmas. like usual apparently lol.
▼damian and his animals. always wanting to adopt a new pet lolz. like the turkey (jerry is a kewl kid). surprised he didn’t take the snake tho.
▼alfred being an unbothered butler as per usual.
▼love that we call batman "batdad" at times. and the father’s day was for alfred( ´ ▽ ` )
▼read till the first two pages of the chinese new years story at the beach. basically katana calls damian a girl lol. read quite a bit at the beach or the bus actually.
▼not sure who the guy with the red eyes that keeps saying “fragging” is. learned who colin and katana are. well, i don’t know who they are outside of this.
▼i could honestly go on, but then it would be the entire book. now this is a book i would like to own for myself.
sidenote for myself (tbh all of these "reviews" are for myself): added to tbr right after "batman: year one" by frank miller (the same day). but i added the first volume and the library had the full collection.
Before Descender, I fell in love with Dustin Nguyen's unique art style in Li'l Gotham. And this full compilation of the entire run of the comic is a delight to read. The title started with a strong holiday focus that initially felt like a lighter, more humorous parallel for The Long Halloween, but in the end it was its own creation with its own set of holidays to explore. We started with the classics like Halloween and Christmas but eventually wandered in the likes of Chinese Lunar New Year and Father's Day.
It's light reading with a lot of subtle references to different aspects of Batman lore like that celebration that was the Clock King issue. And the coloring of this title is so distinct and both soft yet vivid at the same time. A must-read for any Batman fan.
This is a cute collection of short stories about the residents of Gotham celebrating different holidays and seasons throughout a year.
It’s written with younger readers and families in mind, but older Batman fans could find something to enjoy here. There are a lot of references and easter eggs to other comics.
Some of the chapters are definitely better than others. Each chapter is only 10 pages long, and it’s hard to fit an engaging self-contained plot in that time. Even the more boring chapters have fun moments though.
My favorites: Chapter 9: April Showers Chapter 15: Comic Con Chapter 18: Labor Day Chapter 19: Ivy in the Fall Chapter 24: The Grand Finale
I didn’t think much of this collection at first, but the Chinese New Year story with Katana and Robin sold me. I have never been able to stand Damian as Robin, but the interplay between these two had me appreciating him for the first time. I also loved seeing Babs as Oracle again.
A few new characters here that I’ve missed since I’ve stepped away from serious collecting a few years ago, which is both fun to see, and sad that I didn’t see them introduced. That said, my wallet and my storage room are thankful I stopped buying weekly.
Li'l Gotham is an absolutely adorable comic. I loved reading this so much. I'd have definitely given it 5 stars if there hadn't been so many scenes where Talia al Ghul is portrayed as a loving mother and I cannot stand that. There also wasn't enough of Colin Wilkes but that can be said of the entirety of the DC universe. He's such a great little character, deserves more.
Overall, this is a sweet, funny ride through a year of holidays with the Bat Fam and I adored it. If you love the Bat Fam, you're sure to enjoy this.
No two holidays are ever the same in Gotham, and chaos is always just around the corner, whether the Bat Family is facing off against a host of nefarious criminals or each other - but no matter the danger, the celebrations are sure to be Li'l looney and a lot of fun! Nguyen brings plenty of colourful humour and fast-paced action in this entertaining collection, perfect for young newcomers and those seeking a bit of lighthearted superhero antics. Can Batman, Robin and their teammates defend their city from the insanity of Arkham in time to celebrate the holidays?
This was a cute gallery of Gotham's characters and probably my favorite thing to come out of DC recently. Just so wholesome. The stories were all upbeat or at least bittersweet. My only complaint was the watercolors and art style occasionally made it hard to tell who the characters were, especially out of costume.
Silly and sweet. The last chapter had me struggling through real tears. I wish a little bit more thought had been put into the holidays themselves (thanksgiving especially. Also maybe some non Christian holidays considering Damian is the main pov character here) but what can ya do. The art is INCREDIBLE. I want a million more books in this style.
Absolutely adored this comic! The watercolour art is gorgeous, the stories are short but very entertaining and full of little easter eggs. Anyone who is a fan of batman, the bat-family or batman’s rogues gallery should give this a try!
(4.6/5) I absolutely adored this book - they were fun little stories with some fantastic characterizations. I especially loved Damian Wayne/Robin throughout.
I'm not sure when, but I must have read this before. A lot of fun holiday stories focusing on Damian, Batman, and the rest of the Bath family. Well worth reading again.
Really cute stories set in the dc universe. The writer does a great job of capturing the personalities of the characters in a lot of fun ways. There are good jokes on each page and inside jokes for long time dc fans. One of the best things about this series is it's accessibility. You can read this with little ones, hand it off to older ones, or read it yourself. They got a sweet spot where any comic fan can resonate with these stories. The artwork is pretty beautiful and it looks like each one is a watercolor painting. It might take getting used to for those who look at the usual pen, ink, color or computer now where everything is super clean and in the lines. The most beautiful art to me was the poison ivy story with leaves all over the place and her color changed depending on the season. That was really worth looking at several times! My favorite story overall though, was the one with Barbara Gordon taking her dad out for Father's day. That one, I actually had tears go down my face I laughed so hard.
A cute collection of all-ages Batman comics. I love the character designs. Most stories focus on Damien Wayne (which is appropriate for a younger crowd), and take place on a particular holiday.
