Edit:
Ok. The great thing about Goodreads is that you have such a massive & knowledgeable group of people here that help you out when you need some extra information.
And I definitely needed some extra information.
Now, if you are like me and aren't a gamer but just a comic...book-er? <--is that a thing? No matter.
You're gonna want this juicy little tidbit I'm about to share.
YOU MUST WATCH THE CUTSCENES OF THE INJUSTICE VIDEO GAME!

description

Otherwise, the ending won't make any sense and you'll end up ranting like a lunatic.
Not that I did that...

Anyway. The kids and I watched the entire 1 hour 50 minutes and 25 seconds of the Injustice: Gods Among Us The Movie/Story Mode/All Cutscenes that my friend Michael left me a link to.
And you know what?
We had fun!
Yeah, the graphics are somewhat dated because it's a 2013 game, but other than that...? It was a pretty cool story and it completely changed the way I felt about the ending of the comic.

description

Alright, go watch it.
Otherwise, you might sound like this:

What the fuck just happened?

description

No, seriously! What the fuck just happened?!

description

I quite literally do NOT understand the ending. It's gibberish! Explosions and parallel universes? A non-ending ending? What the hell is that nonsense?!
I've been reading this title for years and THIS horseshit is what it has all been leading up to?

description

Ok, ok, ok.
Fine. Fuck it, I'm downloading Injustice 2 Vol. 1 right now to try and make sense of what just happened.

WOW WHAT AN ENDING!

This was really good and I love the way it resolves and the stories are fairly self contained and tying up lose ends and all like Damians revenge, the battle between Hawkman and Superman and what happens there, Lex's shifting allegiance and finally Batman's plans to stop Clark and a fun story with Deathstroke and finally the end moments that lead directly into the game and I love the prologue of the other universe JL and how it all ties up so nicely!

This was a great volume and does well to characterize these heroes as they are now and just showing how far Superman is gone, establishing himself as a dictator with the One-earth govt and all and the thing he does to Black Adam and Hawkman is brutal and its like the final straw to stop this and I love how it resolves itself and having played the game I know how awesome it is. Great ending and even better characterization and all that, I loved the stroy throughout and it just makes the game so much better. Plus the art was phenomenal throughout!

I make my scores on the total Sum of my individual scores on issues. All individual issues were decent to great. But that was the problem. This was build as the final issue. But it was all these side stories untill the final issues where They finally come up with 1 final idea to stop all this for it to fall flat and Just have it continue even longer. There should have never been 5 years of this. Year 1 and 2 were amazing. A final year 3 were either Batman or superman dies would'v been perfect. Year 3 and 4 were complete filler stories. And finally year 5 never even delivered.

Amazing how great this series was at the start and how badly it went. Sorry, Buccellato just didn't honor this series well IMO. Even his strongest is nowhere near as good as year 1-2.

So anyway this is it. Batman is nearly out of options. He's really going through with one more major plan. After Barry and the others offered Bruce no hope he teamed up with Lex to get a different timeline of heroes to help. So if you played Injustice the video game you know how this will end up.

Good: It's over...No kidding. Kind of. It felt wayyyy too long though. Anyway I liked Batman's final words to Superman and enjoyed the Hawkman beatdown.

Bad: All the side stories, especially harley's stories, sucked. It felt overbloated and just seemed like a lot of fluff for no reason.

Injustice goes out on a whimper. From one of the best stories out there to one of the most boring sadly. While some later volumes were decent it never did capture the magic. SO HYPED for Tom Taylor to return with Injustice 2 next month!

Well I was disappointed with the ending of this series. Still an awesome story overall but I thought the Year 5 story arc was going to bring the story to a close, which I was very much anticipating. It turns out Year 5 was just used as a jump off point to the next game the series is based on. I guess I should be happy that I will get to read more in this great alternate DC universe story arc. The series is worth a read as it is an incredible version of what could have happened if your favorite heroes and villains took a different path. Recommended

Injustice sputters to the end, I guess in a cliffhanger? Maybe it all leads into Injustice 2. I'd say I don't care at this point but they went and brought back Tom Taylor and that's when this series was great so I'll give it a shot. The art is consistently good.

Batman and the gang are STILL fighting. We get some Hawkman action **he's gone fricken insane** as well as a nice action sequence from Deathstroke. This series continues to keep me entertained.

Loved all 5 years' worth of this series, and Bruce's final confrontation with Clark was suitably heartbreaking. How did a video game tie-in property become one of DC's finest hours? Much credit to the creative team who brought the run back to its brilliant, iconoclastic best after a few missteps c. Year 3.

Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five Volume 3 by Brian Buccellato is the last issues of Injustice but wait there's an Injustice 2. This volume takes us right up to when the Injustice: Gods Among Us Video game starts. Knowing that there was an Injustice 2 on the horizon, there was no way this series could end cleanly, the superman hate fest does not end with a hug and a hand shake but with a solution to even the score. This book is action packed with some of the best writing that Brian Buccellato has done thus far. He keeps exploring that Batman does not kill, even driven to the edge, he resist, and this Graphic Novel puts him there, where he considered it. The Batman and Damian dynamic explodes as Damian is all for killing, but Batman teaches him a lesson as he hold Clarks throat in his hands. The Flash and Green Lantern start casting doubts. Batman tries to expose Superman with video evidence that would turn the public and some of his teammates against him. Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Five Volume 3 collects issues of Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Five 13-20.

The Series Plot leading up to Year Five Volume 3: The Joker tricks Superman into killing Lois and his unborn child, when her heart stops a nuclear bomb destroys Metropolis. Superman distraught kills The Joker and declares martial law on the whole world, vowing that no one should die needlessly. Lex Luthor develops a pill that will make ordinary people super to start an army of supermen that Superman controls. Batman steals the super humans pills and gives them to every hero and a few villains to make them equal. Superman's action have drawn attention to the Green Lantern Corps who's power is all about will power. Martian Man hunter died as he was fighting Wonder Woman from the inside when Superman used his heat vision, and sent Wonder Woman into a coma. Sinestro is manipulates Superman telling his own story and the way the Green Lantern Corps will attack, he makes an alliance that brings Sinestro and his minions as added protection, both Hal Jordan and Superman put on the yellow rings of fear to win against the Green Lantern Corps. Batman list the help all of his friends with magical abilities in a plan to put Superman asleep forever. The plan worked but Wonder Woman's mother makes a deal with Athena to wake Superman and Wonder Woman. The sleep was supposed to give Superman clarity but he wakes up madder than ever because of what he missed out on. Batman makes a deal with Ares as well that has the old Gods and Amazon's joining his side. The Amazon's are missing Wonder Woman's mother who is taken prisoner by Hera and made to sit this fight out, as per her deal. Batman ends up tricking Wonder Woman to fight Superman to the death a a champion of the Amazon's. Sinestro interferes when it looks like Superman could lose. Zeus Sees this as deal breaker and declares all out war on the New Gods. Superman kills Hercules in the conflict which makes Zeus angry and kills Shazam and Harley who spoke out. Superman retreats as the remaining Justice League are beat. Zeus declares himself God of the world, wanting to get rid of every other form of religion. Ares makes a deal with Superman to bring a jealous Poseidon to fight his brother Zeus. This brings Aquaman into the battle, as Poseidon wants to wipe out Wonder Woman's home with a giant tidal wave. Batman knowing this has got out of control and he got played by a vengeful Ares, seeks a help and offers enough hints to Superman to figure out who Ares is doing his bidding for, Darkseid. Plastic Man risk all to save his son from being a prisoner of Superman, he saves his son and rescues every other rogue in the process. All the men Superman deemed bad guys are released out into the world, some vow to be good, some want to be bad, and some want revenge. Superman works on two things recapturing all of the criminals and taking down Batman. Superman has deal for a set of villains take down the Bat, and get your freedom. Superman finds out about a resistance that uses the image of the Joker to fight back. Superman sees read and uses heat vision murdering every one of them. Bane the man who has broken the Batman before, Killer Frost and Killer Croc. They know they can't reach the bat so the grab the Cat. Catwoman is tortured to reveal where Batman is, she's saved eventually but quits seeing no end to this fight. Lex's Superman clone is found, but there's something not right about him almost bizarre. Bizarro is born and the Trickster is manipulating him. Bizarro accidentally kills the Trickster in a hilarious way, Bizarro starts to remember being made in a lab by Lex and ask lex to fix his friend. Lex convinces Bizarro to gains access to the Fortress of Solitude for real answers on who he is. A Lex controlled Doomsday waits there, the plan is to have Doomsday kill Bizarro so Superman doesn't find out he is working to stop him. Superman wants answers from the clone and shows up to the fortress of Solitude where Lex turns Doomsday and Bizarro who he controls against Superman. Batman is running out of allies and confidence he turns to his surrogate father/butler Alfred who assures him that he is on the right side of this difficult path. After Alfred gets done talking to Bruce, he turns around expecting Damian, but gets instead Victor Zsasz with a long knife in the Bat Cave saying, "the devil sent me." Zasaz murders Alfred, Bruce gets there. He beats him to a bloody pulp but can not kill him. Damian arrives telling Batman to get out of the way so I can kill him.

The Plot of Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five Volume 3 - Batman fights his son, protecting Zasaz from death. They both give everything they have got until Superman arrives. Batman says he sent him Damian that's the true enemy. Damian his mind still on Zasaz tries to kill him once again with Batman stopping him and Superman knocking him through a wall. Batman takes the last super powered pill he has left and Superman and Batman fight. Batman gets the upper hand gets his arm around Superman's neck, and ask Damian is this what you want, you want me to kill him or give him a chance to change. Damian tries to kill Batman to save Superman but Batman sees it coming and blocks it dropping Superman. The Flash comes and sees the damage he takes Zasaz to prison and Batman away. Superman gets angry and threatens The Flash and his disloyalty. he took Batman to grieve for Alfred and said we owed it to Alfred not to fight. The Flash's loyalty is questioned again when Iris is threatened with death for going against the regime. The Flash kills Killer Shark in an attempt to save Iris, and she's not happy at what he's become. Batman and The Flash meet to discuss ending this, and using the speed force to change time. The Flash won't do it saying we deserve this. Hawkman blames Superman for Hawkgirl betraying him and follow him, he fights Superman with a Kryptonite club that he forged he strikes Superman deep, making Superman get a Kryptonite sickness. Batman finds a recording of Superman murdering the Joker cult that he blamed on Bizarro, but the recording clearly shows Superman. Batman has to take Cyborg down to expose the world of Superman's crimes and turn them against him. Will he succeed?

What I Liked: The Batman versus Superman fight is epic and something I truly wanted to see, it has something the series has been promising and we got it full, plus Batman had to deal with Damian trying to kill Zasaz as well. The Flash scenes were written really well, he hasn't gotten a good storyline since Injustice Year One. The ending I was very satisfied, I did know it wouldn't end, so saying that I think it ended with hope and a bit of chaos. They were able to do two things show how to eventually stop the Injustice League and create a new threat.

What I Disliked: much of the criminals have re-escaped storyline is pushed to the side. I was 50/50 on the Hawkman storyline, I really didn't like how it almost came out of nowhere with not much storyline leading into it.

Recommendation: I recommend you check out this series, it has been an interesting ride seeing some characters acting out of character. This book has one heck of a Batman versus Superman fight that cannot be missed. There's some really good character study going on. I rated Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five Volume 3 by Brian Buccellato 4 out of 5 stars. The story picks back up in Injustice 2, what I'm really excited about is it is bringing the original writer of Injustice, Tom Taylor back. I will continue but take a small break from this series as well.

Thank God for Goodreads! (And Anne, who I follow on Goodreads.)

After I put Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five, Vol. 3 down with a resounding WHAT THE FU*K I took to Goodreads where I found THIS: all the cutscenes from the video game Injustice: Gods Among Us made into an almost two hour movie. And, it was pretty darn good (graphics were a little clunky, but still enjoyable).

Since I don't game, I didn't get that the Injustice: Gods Among Us game has its own story, and that the comics would lead up to the game in such an open-ended way. How can we have volumes and volumes of this comics where nothing happens, and then all of a sudden Year 5, Vol 3 ends with an alternate dimension/breach being opened?? I had a full freak-out for about two minutes before I found this Youtube link (thanks, Anne!).

It's hard to rate the comic (Vol 3) without taking the game into consideration, but I'll try.

THE COMIC:
Probably 3.5 for crazy shit going down.

Harley gets "back to herself" i.e. Harleen Quinzel for about a page. Why make her go through the effort of self-reflection and a bottle of blond hair dye at all you may ask (it literally only lasts two pages)? I think it's just to explain the hair wraps and the new outfit she wears in the game. Wardrobe change. *shrug*

The real story:
It really feels like the Insurgency has nothing left up its sleeve. They've recruited everyone they can (Bruce even went back to Black Lightning, but he said no again) and the comic is coming to an end.
In a really great two page exchange, Babs walks up to Bruce, who is slumped, cowl off, in his computer chair. His eyes are hooded, and his shoulders are slightly rounded. Babs asks him if he has anything left.
Barbra: "Just between us. No judgments. No blame. Are there any more plans? Some daring gambit to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat? Be honest... Is it over?"
Batman doesn't answer. Babs starts to walk away.
Bruce: "Barbara... It's not over."
Babs: "Good."

And I didn't quite believe it (with Barry refusing to go back in time, what else is there left to do?), but I love that Batman always has one more plan.
Forget that his plan doesn't pan out (broadcasting Superman murdering "the Jokers" in cold-blood to the world -from Vol 2), that glimmer of a plan of action was very exciting!

I really liked the scenes from the alternate dimension right before the nuke and Lois and the whole start of the Injustice: Gods Among Us story. Especially Alfred's Birthday party (with everyone there including Ollie & Dina & Clark). *sob*
Then the dimension opens and comic ends. And the game begins.

Other things that happen in the comic:
It's still weird to champion Luthor but he is the only human working "with" Superman with a backbone, Catwoman is a fool who makes a foolish deal with the devil, Metropolis gets rebuilt (which is an important plot point for the game), Barry and Hal are still as flaccid as ever, and I don't understand Hawkgirl & Hawkman's relationship...

THE GAME
It was pretty friggin awesome (especially the ending). It was so nice to see our normal heroes again. Ollie. <3
Even Batman vs. Batman was well done/written. It could have been cheesy, but it was in-character and even a little funny.
Also, F YOU, DAMAIN! Grrrr.
I don't want to say more, because it should be watched, but even with the ups and downs of the comic, it was a great story overall. I'm glad I read it & watched it.

I don’t think I’ve ever one-starred a book before but I’ve also never felt so incredibly cheated by an ending to a long series.

I understand after reading other people’s reviews that it’s leading into cut scenes from a 2013 video game. I get that. It’s still terrible. I wish I had known that before I spent half a dozen hours reading this entire series.

The Tom Taylor parts were superb, but this book, like Chicago after Peter Cetera left, lost its quality assurance and that ending suuuuuuucked.

While not as sweepingly spectacular as previous volumes, this one still has plenty of action that propels the story forward those final few steps to where players found things at the start of the game.

CHARACTERS
Related imageBatman and Superman again take their place at center stage. The tension between them continues to be the main staple of the series and it's as good as it's ever been here. Damien Wayne has some great development as he descends even further into darkness while Catwoman comes to Superman, vouching for Batman's life. Harley Quinn completes her transformation into Harleen - a persona that is both a return to who she was before The Joker as well as someone brand new. I've also felt that Batwoman and Batgirl have been underused to date so it was great to see them get a little more time in the spotlight along with Hawkman and Hawkgirl who have also played comparatively minor roles.

WORLD/SETTING
The Regime is in power, but it's not yet exactly the way players found it. It undergoes some awesome changes that are also of great narrative significance. The quarantine of Wayne Manor, the appropriation of Arkham Asylum, and the decontamination/reconstruction of Metropolis all serve as reminders that the writers not only have a great deal of love for the characters, but also the places they call home.

PLOT/TONE
Batman and his allies make one last play at taking down Superman - one that won't be fully enacted until the events of the game. The good news for those who are only really interested in the comic, is that the INJUSTICE:GROUND ZEROES comics covers the events of the game. In the case of either audience, the story answers a lot of the open questions about how Harley Quinn gets her own army, what was involved with pulling in the heroes from the main DC world, and what became of Hawkman after his heartbreak in a previous volume.

ARTWORK
The art - by this point known as being high-quality - ends on a strong note with great attention to the detail. Some of the costumes that members of the Regime and Insurgency factions are wearing in the game even make their debut here which I loved.

CONCLUSION
All in all, INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US YEAR 5 VOLUME 3 is packed with a satisfying series of events that ties the comic back to it's source material and fans won't want to miss it.

So this concludes the year five series, and while it was an ok ending, I felt a bit out of sorts about the fact that the story continues in the video game. First, the fact that the series is actually a prequel for the video game is interesting. I thought we were living the world of the video game, but its a giant setup for the the story within the game. It works ultimately, if only to give more depth to an otherwise bit of a shallow plot to the game.

But what I didn't like was the lack of an ending as the book felt like its own beast. It would've been nice to get some kind of closure instead of just having you jump into the game for the rest of the story. Luckily a great reviewer named Ann (thanks btw!) added the link for the cut scenes to the game so you can pick up where you left off. Its definitely worth a watch.

So overall the book was very good, but dont be surprised if you are left hanging. Get that link ready so can get the whole story.

Looking forward to Zero year and Injustice 2. Hopefully they can keep up the quality in those series as well.

And it ends with a whimper... This final volume of Injustice: Gods Among Us has a little bit of a story as Batman is dragging the bottom of the barrel on ways to fight back against Superman. There are a couple of plans that go awry, and then a final solution that I guess is setting the stage for the second game, but basically throws away most of the series. There are several vignette pieces about secondary characters, but few come to any real point. Even things that seem like they should be major end up having no impact, often by pointless methods (the Cyborg/Raven situation especially). This series had its ups and downs, but it definitely ended on a down note. It deserved better closure than this.

If you wait for resolution you will be very disappointed. I kept reading this series for 5 years and I am reading a lot of (comic) books in the meantime. I have a lot of troubles to remember what happened yesterday not to mentioned 5 years ago in the one of the X series that I am currently reading. Don't get me wrong I like this series a lot but I hate never-ending stories that go on and on and on. And this one is definitely one of those series. There is no way that I would believe that there is end already set up for this story. There will come next game and next game and there will be follow up after follow up until it stops making money.

Alright this story is still ok but can we wrap up this story already?

Just when you think Superman has murdered almost every single character in the DC Universe, Batman has an alternate plan up his sleeve.

This series should have ended in Year Four or Three. It shouldn't have gone this long and the quality is suffering. Characters bending their morals and making questionable decisions are now becoming jerks doing jerk things which is definitely not where the heart of this series was. Oh well. Its still decent for now so I won't complain too much.

I took a star away from my earlier review. That ending was awful.

July 2017 — I didn't realize there was a third volume for year 5 until it showed up in my library. I wish I was more moved by this. The series started great but has been gradually weakened. I'm only still reading to see how it all ends up.

*Review for the entire year 5*

(*Kissing the ground, weeping*) Thank you for ending! Even if the ending means jack shit to me given I've never played a video game in my life and am unlikely to play this one. I was pathetic enough to still want to read the entire series. (Yes, I know the first few volumes of Injustice 2 are already out, and I'm not likely to get closure even if I read those because I'd still need to play that game).

And ew. Good work not only trashing the superheroes, but not even being consistent within your own damned universe. It would have worked if the game took place maybe 1 year after Supes took over the world, but after five years if the idiots with him have doubts but refuse to do anything about it, they're enormously stupid. What was the Flash thing? What was that Green Lantern thing? What was that Catwoman thing? Why does she act differently from one issue to the next? Let me not even talk about Wonder Woman, because what the hell is she? (On a side note, when did Zatanna die? For the life of me I can't remember, but if she's not dead, why isn't she making an appearance if Raven could randomly show up for some stuff?) At the end of it I was hoping a black hole would suck in the lot of them.

The one star rating is for the art. For the most part it's still great.

In this volume Superman starts to look more and more like a superpowered Hitler. He is blinded by his obsession to impose peace and order in the world and doesn't realise he is alienating everybody around him. Sadly, the story doesn't get a definitive ending as it continues in the Ground Zero series. I for one didn't expect the good guys to pretty much fail at every turn, but the outcome was set in stone by the video game.

Batman suspects that Superman is behind Alfred's death. He gets the chance to kill both Superman and Zsasz, but doesn't do it, once again proving to his son Damian that his code comes first. Superman goes all dictator with his accusation of insubordination in his ranks, after learning that Flash saved Batman. This strains relationships further among the Justice League members and makes them doubt the righteousness of their goal. Nobody quits yet, though.

The Final Volume of Injustice attempts to end with a bang, but manages a bit more than a whimper. Plenty of plot and story, with some very good fights, but feels forced on occasion. Points:
- Harley takes command of the Joker Underground
- Metropolis gets restored and repaired, thanks to the help of Atom and Black Lightning
- Superman flexes his power and defeats Black Adam, drawing Kahndaq into submission under the Regime
- Cyborg is abducted and hacked by Batman, Batgirl and Batwoman. The intent is to collect proof the Superman is a cold-blooded murderer and show the world.
- Raven returns to stop the broadcast and foil the Insurgency's plans
- Hawkman (having been hired by Batman in the last Volume) arrives on the scene with a Kryptonite Mace and beats the crap out of Superman, almost killing him
- Lex presents the idea of the multiverse (DC's great solution to everything... )
- As the Multiverse idea is inacted, the battle between Batman and Superman comes to a head (this is an epic fight for sure!) and Bruce gives a great speech ("he'd be ashamed to see his dictator son...")

Overall, the Injustice games are fantastic and the run of this started off awesome, but went on too long perhaps. I'd still recommend this series, but maybe would be better read all at once or in larger chunks.
