Dead bodies don’t scare me. They can’t curse me, lunge at me or do anything but rot and stink. It’s their spirits that are the problem.
I’m Yukine necromancer, exorcist, dark mage, and the girl who’s gonna save your ass when spirits come knocking. I see between the veil that separates the world of the living from the Spirit World—a place full of ghosts and supernatural monsters called Calamities.
On the surface, Neo-Tokyo sparkles like an ultramodern jewel, but its roots run deep and dark, tangled in magic. When a powerful Calamity snatches young girls and leaves a trail of angry ghosts in its wake, I take the case. But the more I dig, the more dangers pop-up.
If I don't stop this creature soon, it’ll drape Neo-Tokyo in a veil of death.
I really enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. I would have thought so would everyone else I often read the other reviews before I write mine and I was shocked to read one that, said all the names were too confusing and they'd put it down half way through, Ok the names were at first difficult but no more than any fantasy or sci-fi book that takes part on other worlds, it's all part of the author's imagination that captures hold of the readers and the further you read the easier it is to get immersed in the story. I found this book to be a real refreshing read with a kick ass heroine that battled supernatural entities. What more could you want? Yukine Nok is a necromancer, exorcist and dark mage, she can see between the veils that separate the world of the living from the spirit world a place full of ghosts and supernatural monsters called Calamities. I won't tell you any more as I hate when reviewers say too much and spoil the book for other readers. I voluntarily read this book for an honest review and I really look forward to reading more books by this author.
It took me forever to get this read, sadly so. The reason is quite simple. The book is boring. I know I sound an asshole, but nothing happens in the book, literally. Hunter isn't that bad of a writer, but nothing is described in the book (sounds like a contradiction, right?). Absolutely nothing. Yukine Nox is a necromancer, exorcist and a dark mage fighting Calamities in Neo-Tokyo. We do have a case of sorts and a possible love interest, or at least smooching. Neo-Tokyo, what is it like? No clue. How about the Calamities? No clue either. How can Hunter avoid creating meat around the bones of the story is beyond understading. The long neck women made no sense and it seems Hunter forgot them too. How does Nox fight Calamities, what does she do? No clue. The book is full of Nox just thinking stuff and 1st person POV doesn't usually work with fantasy or scifi because of this. It makes it impossible to tell about the surroundings unless you're an awesome writer. You get my point?
The only interesting part was Kuro, who's basically the only one with at least a hint of a persona. Nox herself is full of herself and almighty even though she does nothing as stated above. Lux is great in a sense, but does even less and why the Latin name? I liked that this happens in Japan, but it felt more like name dropping then anything else (I've lived in Tokyo and studied the language). How can you even fight ghosts with shuriken?? The weapons made no sense considering you're fighting spirits and there are "Japanese" ways to fight them. Another thing that makes no sense. At least the text rolls nicely, which is good and the last page saves a lot, but otherwise the book made me cringe, since I kept thinking why, oh why, since this could've been a heck of a lot better.
I have always loved the mystery surrounding the spiritualism in Japan. This series takes a look at a Japan further I our future. One that has similarities to our world but one that is filled with spirits. Both good nd bad. This series follows a Necromancer on her journeys and discoveries to find who and what exactly she is. Tagging along are a few friends and "Lux" what she thought was a calamity but seems to be a Kami or God instead. Love this series. Cannot wait to red more
Delightful (light) reading for winter break - very fun, very novel, main character is a kick. I absolutely love a strong female lead in my sci fi and fantasy, which is the genre I read before bed to help me detach from work. This fit the bill! It was incredibly creative, and I love the beautiful world this author is creating. Loved this book and the other in the series as well - I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment!
Absolutely riveting! Not normally my type of reading but I got the prequel on giveaway and was hooked. What can she do in her fight against the horrors of the shadow world? If you like your heroine's flying by the seat of their pants, lots of action and unexpectedly a touch of romance in a paranormal setting, then is is for you. A great read.
I really enjoyed this book. It has a great storyline and great characters. The relationship between Yuki and Lux, whom she thought was a calamity, kept me entertained from the very beginning. This is a great book definitely worth reading.
I really enjoyed reading this book although I did run into a bit of difficulty sometimes. The characters and world building were great, but I fear some readers might get a bit lost if they haven't read the prequel first. Yuki / Nox is a strong heroine; however, her head-shaking stupidity on a couple occasions almost made me give up it was so frustrating. I can understand some stubbornness and protectiveness, but Yuki / Nox often seemed more like an immature / judgemental teen to me than a young woman in her twenties. Things that to me were blatantly obvious seemed to elude her grasp regularly. I suppose that as an outsider (reader) that might be normal, but I still had trouble believing she didn't see / understand some things. Further, she regularly laments how people judge her unfairly due to her ability, but she does exactly the same thing to Kuro for no apparent reason. Also, she "runs away" a lot, not out of cowardice; however. In reality, many people have trouble asking for help when they need it and that's certainly so with Yuki, but she's really intelligent enough to know better. Definitely not a "perfect" heroine, with plenty of faults, but still one you want to succeed. Finally, the end seemed a bit rushed to me after all the earlier details. With what I've said, it might seem that I didn't like the book, but I really did. Perhaps it just would have been a little better to me if Yuki sometimes didn't seem so clueless or harsh. Still, I definitely wanted to know what happened and am satisfied with the end result. Hopefully the next book will be longer (more pages) as this read pretty quick. Most importantly, I think, is that I will be looking for the next book to come out to find out what is next for Yuki, Kuro, Aki and Ken. Happy reading!!
Wow...what a great 1st book..I loved it...Reading about Yuki and friends was a blast ...if you like urban fantasy with kick ass heroines give this new series a try... you won't be disappointed...I was given a free ARC of this book for a honest review...
I only gave it three stars because the first 7 chapters seemed repetitious that I was ready to not finish reading it. Once I got past the 7th chapter it became more interesting. You then started getting into the story with some actions and seeing what the story line was really about. I loved how Yuki and Lux went back an forth with each other, it makes you laugh. You could see sparks between Kuro and Yuki and it was get together don't get together. Heart racing when Yuki had to go against Calamities. I received a arc copy for my honest review.
Kindle Unlimited though pretty sure got this as an ARC, so not sure if supposed to put the usual got for free to hopefully review, free will etc ad nauseum stuff. Interesting story, liked it just didn't luv it, really slow start too close to repetitious but was better as got in to it all, just got lost a few times, not sure if that was the writing or having it read to me on the kindle for pc with audio or not.
prequel is Path of Shadows Deathwalker, don't see it listed, could be one of those subscribe only books
I really enjoyed this book. It was a different take on ghosts from the books I have read previously, but loved these differences. Yuki lives in Neo-Tokyo and is a freelance exorcist. She is able to tap into different powers to seal a type of ghost called a Calamity, usually an evil, destructive ghost. These calamities also have the power to possess humans and can be incredibly fast and strong too.
Yuki is hired by her old partner, a detective from the local police force, to investigate a series of child disappearances which are somehow linked to the Long-Necked Women calamities that are appearing. With the unwanted help from an old adversary, she manages to stumble further into this investigation and finds out things she definitely wasn't expecting to find. Can this old adversary be trusted?
I really liked the world building, never having read a book set in Neo-Tokyo before and it certainly developed some of my understanding about Japanese culture too. I loved the interactions between Yuki and Lux - he was hilarious at times, yet frustrating for Yuki. Can't wait to read the next book to see if Lux will actually reveal any of his secrets to Yuki and to also find out if the potential love interest actually goes anywhere.
Enjoyable read. Interesting and intriguing characters, with well written plot and sub plots interwoven throughout. Loved the ending! Definitely would recommend to anyone that enjoys paranormal and suspense. Can't wait for the next book!
I loved how different this book is, an alternative fantasy/paranormal read set in Neo-Tokyo.
A good strong story which held my attention throughout, I didn't really connect with Yuki until further into the book and I can't really put my finger on why. However once we had Lux thrown into the loop, I was rooting for them and their love/hate relationship.
I'm not going to re-cap on this story, if paranormal is your genre then this is definitely worth a read, with very different and interesting take on what happens after death.
