Welcome to Seaside! A sleepy, island village filled with sandy beaches, colorful characters... AND MURDER!
Paige Comber dreams of running off to Paris to train at the Cordon Bleu, but fresh out of college, she is stuck running her granny's coffee shop in the small town of Seaside. It looks like a lousy summer until a handsome stranger named Nate arrives.
He's here to help his Uncle Byron with his affairs, but when his uncle's body washes up on the beach and Nate is thrown into prison, it is up to Paige to find out who might have been crazy enough to do it.
4 stars - English Ebook 🦋🦋🦋 Finally finished. Due to the Corona Virus and very busy days it took me until now to finish this book. I liked the read. Some mystery, some love, some twist and turns. 🌹🌹🌹
THE SECRET OF SEASIDE is the first book I've read by Agatha Ball but it won't be my last. It is the first book in the Paige Comber series. Once I started reading, I was emotionally invested in all of the characters and what they were going through. Paige is running her grandmother's book store/coffee shop so she can learn about running a business. Her dream is to become a chef and run her own business. While she is there she meets Nate who is only on the island for a few weeks to help his aging uncle out. No one on the island likes his uncle because he is very greedy, rich, and is trying to buy up all the land. When his uncle is pulled out of the water dead, everyone turns on Nate since things like this never happen in Seaside.
THE SECRET OF SEASIDE is filled with friendship, forgiveness, family, mystery, humor, and romance. Paige's grandmother is a sharp dresser with quite the sense of humor that will have you laughing out loud over and over again. Nate and Paige come up with a plan to investigate what happened to his uncle, without letting anyone on the island know what they are doing. Well, it's a small island where everyone knows everyone else's business so you can only imagine how this works out for them. If you love murder mystery cozies, then I highly recommend this quick and easy story.
I enjoyed every minute I spent reading THE SECRET OF SEASIDE and am looking forward to spending more time on the island. If you are looking for a cozy with flawed characters who are relatable, THE SECRET OF SEASIDE is the book for you. Once I started reading I had a hard time putting this funny story that is filled with many nosy neighbors, down. The story of Paige and Nate and them trying to find the real killer really held my interest. I can't wait to see what Agatha Ball does with some of the secondary characters in this series.
Pedestrian cozy mystery without any real originality. I had hopes it would at least be a 3-, but the end let me down. Totally out of left field and never really explained well. Several other things were not explained well or at all, like why Byron was buying up a lot of property or what Nate does for a living that he seems to have so much flexibility. Maybe some of that will come out in a future installment, but I won't be there to read it.
OK so I found this one for free online somewhere. And it makes me feel bad to have to leave a not so good review. What should have been a fun seaside cozy turned out to be a dopey poorly written one. My biggest complaint is the author's love of CAPITALIZING WORDS ON EVERY PAGE!. Yeesh. The mystery was weak, formulaic...and it seemed like the author lost interest in spots. The dialog was just so bad. But to be fair, perhaps I'm not the target audience. It was a bit on the YA side. I'm hardly one foot in the grave, though, and have to believe I would have felt the same in my YA days. With a little work, this may have been a better story. I won't be visiting Seaside again.
I had high expectations because of the cute cover, but The Secret of Seaside was honestly pretty trashy.
First of all, the murder was discovered within the first 20 pages or so, but nobody actually started investigating until halfway through the book. It was just kind of, "oh there was a murder of a guy no one liked, what do we do? Let's do nothing." I didn't like the beginning, and once they got to the actual investigating it was only slightly better. You would expect cozy mysteries with amateur detectives to make silly blunders, but it was clear these characters had no method to their investigating.
The characters themselves were also cardboard cutouts with very little personality. The author introduces all characters in a way that tells us what their goals are (as opposed to showing), and in a way this leaves very little room for them to grow.
One thing that especially rubbed me the wrong way was Johnny's character. Although he was the most 3D character of all of them, his depiction is just wrong. As someone who's spent time with people with processing and other mental disorders, it is characters like Johnny that give these real life people a bad rap. Although Johnny's processing issues are explained, his character feels a lot more like a stoner than like a serious depiction of a person with a disability. I love seeing representation for diverse characters, especially in cozy mysteries where a lot of the characters are white, straight, and neurotypical, but if you're going to do it you need to do it right, and at least research what this looks like.
Even if I had other books in this series I don't think I would continue it, and I definitely won't spend money on it. I'm also happy to see that there are only five books in the series, because there's just nowhere this could possibly go beyond the blatantly obvious. And with an island population that small, I have trouble seeing how more books could work without the entire population being either murdered or convicted in the end.
Unfortunately, I got 42% throught this book and had to stop because I flat out could not force myself to read further. While the plot line was somewhat intriguing the content and descriptions of characters left me wanting to throw the book across the room and read something better. There is the token BFF, who of course is a stoner surfer. The hot mistery man who rolls into town. The small town coffee shop and gossiping old ladies. And of course the small town cop is a bumbling idiot...I finally stopped the book for the last time when he wrote the name of the cat down as a murder suspect.
**I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**Due to the nature of how I came to read this book I gave it more time and read further than I would have otherwise. I kept trying to find a reason to like it and finish the book. There just wan't enough there for me to do so.
This is a fast read, but I honestly felt it could have used some more work. Both the story and the mystery were a little too thin and improbable for my liking. I also didn't feel as though the characters were particularly well-developed.
This book seemed more like a YA mystery/romance to me, which is fine I guess, but it just wasn't what I was expecting. Not terrible, just okay and a good way to pass a brief afternoon.
Since this is Book 1 in the Paige Comber series, maybe the books get better. I'd still be willing to give the next book a try to find out.
This novel had a pleasant setting, and in the first few pages I had hopes for it as the sense of a young adult woman working in her grandmother’s charming bookshop for the summer was nicely established. Unfotunately, the characters were all two-dimensional and flat, the dialogues unrealistic or trite, and the behaviors and responses to attempts at plot advancement were often redundant or illogical and in several cases, both. There are plenty of cozy mystery series out there; I would recommend finding one less shallow in so many ways.
I got this for free during Stuff Your Kindle Days cause it looked cute. And it was cute. My expectations were not all that high and for the most part the book was…. fine 🤷🏼♀️ There were some funny parts and I could get onboard with the summery vibes ☀️ The ending is really one of the main reason why this got bumped down - it was so out of left field and nothing was really explained??? Felt pretty flat and unsatisfying.
This was the a better cozy mystery compared to the cozy mystery that I read yesterday. It was a quick and cute cozy mystery that really kept my interest from beginning. I liked the whole small town feel on this isolated island that gave off a cozy and quaint feeling that made me feel like I was right there with the characters.
My interest immediately was peaked with the first meeting between Nate and Paige. There was subtle flirting and banter between them. The sparks were there and teased the potential between the two of them. I just liked seeing them together. Plus that first meeting setup the murder that was to come with it being Nate’s uncle that he was visiting in order to help take care of things on his estate. It presented the uncle not such a flattering light from other’s in town as well as Nate himself. So, it was no surprise when the uncle ended up murder with Paige stumbling on the body along with her friend Johnny.
The story really took off at that point. The pacing was good with just enough teases of information without being bogged down with too much where it felt like it was too much. It just piqued my interest so I wanted to keep going and find out what would happen next. There were clues, but they were subtle so I couldn’t quite figure out who the murderer was or what the motive was. It really didn’t become clear until the end of why the murder happened. I really appreciated that because it kept me on my toes.
I really did enjoy the romance that was in here as well. There was just enough to give me that taste without feeling cheated or like I wanted more. Nate and Paige were cute together I loved how they worked together in order to solve the murder. They had some great interactions. There was great connection and caring between them. I just thought they were very sweet and lovely as a couple. I enjoyed seeing them get closer throughout the story.
There was great humor in this book as well. Mostly due to the inept cops in this town. They really didn’t know what they were doing. They reminded me of a comedy duo where all their mishaps were full on display. Some of the things were just so outrageous that it was plain funny. It brought some levity to the situation while also providing why Paige and Nate had to go about solving the crime instead of the cops. Johnny had some funny things that he said and again just brought some lightness to tone of the story in an otherwise serious situation. That was just what Johnny’s personality was. I will say that the amount of “likes” he used in his sentences got to me at time, but I get that was to show that something had happened to him that caused him to act that way.
Overall it was a fun and enjoyable ride to go on. I enjoyed that story, the characters, the suspense, and the romance. I loved small town feel. It kept my interest the entire time. I found that I wanted to know how this was going to turn out in the end. It was just suspenseful enough without dragging it out. It just worked for me.

3,75 stars English Ebook Seaside is a small island where everyone knows everyone else. Paige is spending the summer on Seaside, working at her Gran's coffee shop & hanging out with her old friend Johnny. It's quiet and peaceful. Paige daydreams about going to France. Things look up when she meets Nate, who has come to the island to help out his uncle, Byron. Paige is smitten with this handsome, charming stranger. Byron is a recluse and none too popular with the islanders. No one is especially heartbroken when Byron is found dead on the shore. To Paige' s horror and disbelief the inept local police officers arrest Nate for murdering his uncle. Paige sets to work to prove Nate's innocence. Everything gets more complicated and baffling. This is a really good cosy mystery. Lots of great characters including oddball locals, and an intriguing story. It's perfect for the beach, or a relaxing afternoon in the garden or on the sofa, with your cat, thee and scones.
I'm so glad I finally took time to read this! It was very sweet and so funny sometimes! I just loved Granny and her three friends, they cracked me up how they got all involved in the town gossip. Paige and newcomer Nate made the cutest couple. Even though police officer Stan was made to look like a bumbling buffoon like Barney Fyffe, he came through when he was needed, and he didn't get all over Paige's case when she was investigating to completely clear her and Nate's names after two bodies were found. I hadn't guessed the killer until it all started falling into place and was happy to see that everything was wrapped up nicely and explained at the end. I've borrowed the next book on KU, so I'm looking forward to reading it hopefully soon.
This was actually pretty good, but it could have been a lot better if the author hadn't gone for cheap caricatures for many of the characters. The protagonist's best friend is a surfer who is channeling Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High to the point that it's more annoying than funny. Her grandmother and her friends scream Designing Women. The police are both belligerent and incompetent, because what on earth would a writer do with competent officers except learning about proper police procedure to write them effectively. Not to mention it stretches the suspension of disbelief well past the breaking point to believe that evidence of a crime could go undetected that long on an island, even with incompetent police. And don't even get me started about the sudden appearance of a stranger who can explain everything and provide the evidence needed against the bad guy just in time to wrap everything up.
The character dialogue was very well done, but it's horribly disappointing when an author who clearly can write has such a hard time constructing a believable plot.
I thought this book was extremely poorly written. There were many grammatical and punctuation mistakes and frankly the plot was never clear nor were the ‘mysteries’ solved. I enjoy a light mystery but expect higher quality of writing and editing than this book offered.
I liked this little mystery. I enjoyed meeting the characters and I really liked the sweet little town. This is a quick easy cozy and a nice beach read. I will be reading more in this series.
A cute Cozy mystery in which Paige solves an decades old murder mystery and lands herself a new boyfriend. Set in a town called Seaside located on an island, accessible only by ferry twice a day. When the old man of the town is found dead on the beach, his nephew was the first suspect.
When Paige discovers the next dead body, she then becomes a suspect. She discovers ther location where the old man must have been killed and she also discovers that the old man was buying up all the land under the businesses in Main street. But not the purpose.
Paige then takes a bicyle tour out to the old cannery where she finds yet a 3rd body - that of a young woman who went missing more than a decade earlier. Paige is helping her Granny (everyone calls her Granny) at her coffee shop/bakery for the summer. While out for a stroll on the beach, she finds a dead body, the body of the most hated man in town. When his nephew (Nate) , who had just arrived in town to visit his uncle is accused of his murder, well, Paige doesn't believe it, and as she and Nate try to prove he didn't do it, she up and finds a second body. The little town of Seaside is in turmoil.
This book could have had 3 stars if some things weren't so predictable. We have the incompetent police men, we have Paige and Nate's attraction for each other at their first meeting. He has such nice eyes he can't be guilty sort of thing.
We did have some interesting components; the town is reachable only by boat as it is on a small island. With the ferry only running twice a day, the murderer has to be island folk. We also have some interesting townspeople who I assume will be recurring characters in future installments.
Fun story! I would say, it's for the teenage audience. Because of some language here and there and for the slight romance. I'd say 13 and up. A clean mystery another wise. I read it really fast. The mystery was interesting, but I felt that it fell a little short at the end. I guessed the bad guy wich was quite fun, though I'd have liked to have more to a mystery. It's worth the read! It's short and not super scary yet not too cheesy.
I have been lucky enough to have been reading all 5 star review books.
This one was about a girl named Paige Comber working at her granny's seaside cafe and bookstore for the summer. Johonny found on the beach was the uncle of Nate the new guy who came in her shop that morning.
They were surprised to hear that Nate had been arrested for murder of his uncle. She was ready to help him get out of jail.
The book was very well writtenand the story was a good mystery right to the end.
After the last few books I've read of late, it was time for something light-hearted and not so deep and dark and horrifying. This fit the bill for me and I rather enjoyed it well enough.
No mind-bending mystery here, but the author did throw in a little curve ball near the end that was not in the least expected. Nice touch that. Easy reading and very relaxing.
This is an intriguing introduction to a new series, with interesting characters and a solid story line. I did find the characters of the police to be unbelievably incompetent and uncaring, which took away from the overall enjoyment of the book.
Now I know why I usually do not pick up ‘Cozy Mysteries’. This one was a mess; poorly developed characters, simplistic and bad writing that created so many gaps and errors, plus the storyline was bleh. Thankfully it was a short book and I picked it up for free on my Kindle!
This was light easy and fun to read. The characters were fun to keep track of and I was surprised by the ending. I would definitely recommend this book!😊
