The Strange Case at Misty Ridge

Rate this book
The dead are never still, they exist just beyond the corners of our eye, in the barren wasteland beyond our own phantasmagoria, and we, for the most part, remain oblivious to their plight.

Jack Keswick survived a tragedy that claimed many lives. He knows he is a lucky man. Life changing injuries forced Jack into semi-retirement, but he now spends his days fulfilling what has become a lifetime passion; investigating reports of paranormal activity.

These cases have led to his experiencing a number of unexplained incidents; though he also has his own cross to bear when it comes to the bizarre. Since the accident which almost ended him, Jack has developed a tendency to experience out-of-body events, and these unaccountable bouts of astral projection are now presenting questions of their own.

When a young woman turns up at Jack's door, claiming her home is infested with troublesome spirits, his investigation leads to a haunted cottage, the restless dead, and the revelation of a maleficent force that will forever change Jack's perception of reality.

Once More with Feeling
"There are people in the house. They have the children. What should we do?"

I was born into a world of horror... Well, not quite, but almost! To be more precise, my 'very sudden' arrival into this world came about via a broken cinema seat. It was a seat into which my heavily pregnant mother found herself wedged. Once it had collapsed beneath her bulk, the resulting chaos of attempting to free her - perhaps not surprisingly - induced a rather rapid labor.
Talk about a grand entrance.
I'm guessing it was something of a talking point among those present, and probably for many years after.
Oh, yeah, and the film that was showing? It was The Phantom Of The Opera!

I have had a fascination with all aspects of the horror genre since my childhood, and it is a major driving force in my desire to write entertaining stories.

Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria is my first novel; It's the story of Laura Bennett, who finds everything changes on the day a beautiful and mysterious stranger first enters her life...

A novel length re-imagining of J.S. Le Fanu's original novella, Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria draws on much of the original narrative, but also introduces an array of new Characters to bring a whole new level of horror, and tragedy, to the legend of Carmilla.

The novel is co-authored by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and David Brian.

Collections of my short stories can be found in the fantasy books Dark Albion, Kaleen Rae, and The Cthulhu Child.

This was an engrossing novel revolving around the experiences of a paranormal investigator.  While the story focuses on the likeable protagonist and his background in the uncanny, the plot branches into different directions, exploring ghostly occurrences and out-of-body ventures.  There are some genuinely unexpected moments in this fast-paced and surreal tale.  I am hoping that the author is planning on a sequel.

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.  Many thanks.

This was a nicely paced novel about mysterious happenings at a remote cottage. When a paranormal investigator is called in to investigate supernatural goings on at Misty Ridge, it doesn't take long to uncover a series of tragedies still marring the home.
Meanwhile, he becomes plagued with dreams and remote viewings, psychic visions of another place somehow connected to the ghosts haunting Misty Ridge. As he works to 'move on' the restless spirits, he learns of dark secrets that point towards some other, far deadlier presence surrounding the case.
I felt a few issues could have been further expanded on, but other than this I greatly enjoyed The Strange Case at Misty Ridge.

Interesting haunting!

The haunting and connections presented in this book are very interesting. The story is very engaging and I would read huge sections at a time, not wanting to put it down but couldn’t keep my eyes open. I think this book would work best in reading it in one sitting if possible. This is my first read from this author but won't be my last. Good job David Brian!

This was an ARC which I received from the author in exchange for a review.
I've now read quite a few stories by David Brian, and I've enjoyed a majority of them. With the possible exception of Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria, this would be the best of them.
The Strange Case at Misty Ridge focuses on an investigation into a haunting at a country home. As the investigator seeks to get to the bottom of the mystery he uncovers a dreadful history, and by this time the story has already begun branching towards a series of different, although equally troubling happenings.
Ghostly events, demonic figures, and concerns over the mantras of religion, lead to a fast paced supernatural mystery that I barely set down.

I'm always on the lookout for a good horror story and while I wasn't terrified by this one, I was seriously creeped out. The book is very well written and descriptive. When I can see the events playing out in my head, the author has done his job and done it well. The story revolves around paranormal investigator, Jack. He's a likable character and the case at Misty Ridge is creepy enough in it's own right, but the twist that's thrown in is something else! Just when I thought I knew where this tale was going, I'm hit with that ending. The twists and turns reminded me a bit of Alfred Hitchcock and as I said, it was creepy.

Review: THE STRANGE CASE OF MISTY RIDGE by David Brian

I really enjoyed this paranormal novel, set in Northamptonshire, England. Much of what I liked, I can't specify, for giving away the story. So I shall summarize: Jack Keswick is a very happily married man, childless. In middle age he is badly injured in a roadway accident, and undergoes a out-of-body, near-death experience. Eventually recovering, though in near-constant pain, Jack takes up paranormal investigation. A rural homeowner seeks his investigative help for the seeming hauntings in her cottage which are destroying her marriage and family life. When Jack investigates, the actual facts are beyond shocking. I like Jack as a protagonist because he perseveres, despite circumstances stacked against him; and even though at first his mind isn't open to some of the more outre occurrences and suggestions, nevertheless he is intelligent enough to listen and to consider, not closed to a vaster truth. His continuing character evolution and the paranormal and otherworldly aspects made this a very satisfying story for me.

Having been left with health issues following a catastrophic accident, Jack Keswick now spends his time investigating unexplained phenomena--something which has always held his fascination. When a young mother named Sally Featherstone comes to his house begging for help, with claims of poltergeist activity in her country home, Jack is both excited and wary. He has investigated haunted houses before, and not always without unsavory occurrences. Nevertheless, he agrees to help and arranges to visit Misty Ridge a few days later.
As Jack struggles to understand what is happening at the cottage and to help spirits tainted by past tragedies, he begins to suspect there is a far more ancient and deadly force pulling strings in the background, perhaps with an agenda of its own.
This book kept me engrossed all the way through. A very interesting and unsettling story.

I really enjoyed The Strange Case at Misty Ridge. As well as a story that unfolds into a traditional ghost story (and this aspect is good in its own rights), there is also a second layer involving astral projection and touching on cosmic horror.
I think the only other book I've read involving out-of-body experiences is Nobody True by James Herbert, and I loved that one. It's a subject that fascinates me. Where David Brian chose to take this story, and how he then wrapped it up; I loved it.
If you like ghosts, cosmic horror, or conspiracies, then I recommend this one.

The Strange Case at Misty Ridge is a story about ghostly goings on that blight the life of Jack Keswick, a man who has narrowly survived a bad accident.
Following an OOBE (out of body experience) at the scene of that prior accident, Jack now spends his time looking into cases of the paranormal. When he is asked to look into events at a supposedly haunted cottage, Jack is drawn towards revelations of something far darker than the ghosts that haunt Misty Ridge.
I enjoyed this story, it has a character driven plot that flows well and there are quite a few surprises as things unfold, so it kept me interested all the way through. The ending came as a complete surprise, although looking back now I can see it had been teased at.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
The Strange Case at Misty Ridge was a quick & fun read about a haunted cottage (named Misty Ridge) and the paranormal investigator called in to resolve the ghostly goings on.
There is also a secondary story running through this book, parallel to the haunting is a tale of demons, and the way they overshadow our world influencing people and events. I found this second aspect to the story to be even more interesting than the (disturbing and tragic) events at Misty Ridge, and I would love for it to have been further expanded on.

Jack Keswick runs his own paranormal investigation company. When he is asked by Mrs. Featherstone to come and help her with strange happenings at her cottage in Misty Ridge, Jack readily agrees to take on the challenge. Jack is going to find a link to the past that is haunting the present in this suspenseful paranormal thriller. This book is well written and one readers will find compelling as they learn about Jack's haunted past while he deals with the paranormal in the present.

I received an ARC of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review.
Psychic investigator Jack Keswick, along with his wife Linda and a psychic named Violet are called in to investigate mysterious goings on at a cottage deep in the English countryside. Objects are being upended and cries are ringing out within the walls of Misty Ridge cottage, and the people living there are almost at wits end as the ghostly events blight their lives.
It doesn't take long to confirm the reported incidents are real, and then a web of intrigue ensues as Jack begins to realize the haunting may be tied to events unfolding on another continent, and that he is connected to these happenings in ways he could never have imagined.
I enjoyed this book and finished it in just a few days. There was so much going on that I hardly wanted to stop reading. The ending came as a real shock but it was a clever twist.

This copy was sent me by the author, a huge thank you to David for his kindness and generosity.

I liked this book, but it felt a little disjointed, almost like two books combined to be one, which made more sense when I read it actually started out as a short story and was then extended. Both the ghost story and the wider Lovecraftian one appealed to me but i just felt in this case, they didn't quite work together. Having said that, David gave us his usual little twist in the tail right at the very end. I'll definitely be reading more of his work.

It was good. I give it between 3 or 3.5 star's.
Book started out slow didn't start getting into until halfway in the book.
Did have few twist here and there. Some untold stuff we learn during the book about Jack's childhood from his mother and him being able to deal with ghost that are trapped here and the dark just waiting to come forward show their hand of cards as well.

I loved The Strange Case at Misty Ridge by David Brian. Solidly written, and while a classic ghost story/haunted house tale ( which are one of my favorite reads) it had unique twists and turns that I've never read before. Mr. Brian and his imagination kept me turning the pages.

This was the first time I've read Mr. Brian but I'll be checking out his other books for sure.

4 1/2 stars.
I didn't find this book particularly scary, although there were plenty of surprises and one or two genuinely disturbing happenings. I also enjoyed the fact this wasn't just a regular ghost story and involved elements (gods/demons?) I knew nothing about. I liked how the story ended.

I'd previously read David Brian's vampire books (Carmilla series) and found them to be well thought out stories with decent writing. I picked up a copy of The Strange Case at Misty Ridge after having it recommended by a few different people, and then hearing Brian Keene talking about the novel on his horror show. Given that he said he "fucking loved it!" I thought i'd give it a try. Good move on my part.
It's about a disabled researcher of the paranormal and occult who gets called in to investigate a haunting in a country home. It's difficult to explain too much without revealing spoilers, other than to say he finds a lot more than he bargained for.
Also, it's necessary to point out this isn't just about ghosts; if you enjoy the idea of demonic presence, or even thinking about unearthly/cosmic forces holding sway over the evil in this world, then this is great. I was thinking about this story for days after reading this. Good recommendation from Brian Keene. And a great book from David Brian.

I may be biased here because David Brian is an author based in my hometown - I've seen him on the street, but never plucked up courage to ask him about his books. Anyhow, biased or not, I thought The Strange Case at Misty Ridge was great.
The story focuses on Jack Keswick, a man left disabled after a life threatening accident, who now works as a paranormal investigator. What starts out as a regular ghost story quickly becomes something else, due in part to the fact that Jack keeps experiencing out-of-body experiences. Truths are revealed about Misty Ridge (the haunted cottage he is investigating), and also about Jack's past. There is also a far greater evil uncovered, and this caught me totally unprepared. I've read a lot of David Brian's stories, but for me this was the best so far.

ETA: There is a section in the back where the author talks about a haunted house he lived in as a child. I so want to know where this house is.

Well written but lightweight

This book was something of a disappointment, the characters lacked depth and the story was lightweight. The ghostly happenings at Misty Ridge took second place to the investigator's own family stories and their paranormal experiences. To me, the book lacked focus.

Unfortunately I am writing this review bed ridden and with a serious case of 'man flu' however it does have it's upsides. For the first time in a long time I have finished a book on the same day of starting it, I cannot for the life of me remember the last time this has happened so it must have been a long time ago. Because this is a rare occurrence I am feeling a little more generous and have decided to round up, actual rating would probably be around the 3.5/3,75 mark.

I never give an overview of the plot as I feel goodreads synopsis does a more than adequate job and gives you the overall feel of what the book is going to be about unless there are details which I feel I want to expand on. But In Misty Ridge's case its pretty much standard, we have Jack who, after surviving a near fatal accident is forced into semi retirement and now spends his time indulging in his favorite past time...... investigating the paranormal. He is visited at his home by a young lady who is experiencing some rather strange and sinister goings on in her family cottage 'Misty Ridge' he offers to help, and here we have our story.... simple right?

No, not quite...as always I will keep this review spoiler free therefore, while talking about the story I will have to be super vague and cryptic but all I can say is there are a few twists and turns and certainly some I wasn't expecting but definitely put this apart from your average 'paranormal hunter' type of book. We have seen it/read it a hundred times before, a main character has a special gift (I forgot to mention at the beginning Jack also has the ability to astral project, see/feel things, sense things that have happened) gets called up to investigate a spooky house/cottage/castle you name it, spooky things happen... all of it leading up to a big climax at the end. While yes, Misty Ridge follows the pattern more or less, it does however throw the reader a few curve balls. Maybe a couple things here and there that seemed a little TOO convenient and felt like a couple things were super far fetched but needed to be included in order for the story to make sense and come together.

But other than that its a super ride. Maybe a little too quick? As I said at the beginning I have been bedridden all day so managed to read this in one session (I would recommend this if you do have the time) I knew coming into this is what a somewhat quick read, I was also not surprised to read that this was initially a short story expanded. I guess in short I think I wanted more, I wanted more build up and atmosphere, if I'm not mistaken we only enter Misty Ridge all but twice during the novel before its done and I just would have loved a bit more of a slow burner build up I thnk this book would have so immense if it was say 400 pages. Not to say the quick pace didn't provide creepiness and a morbid sense of dread, it most certainly did, I think I'm just selfishly needing/wanting more.

Characters were all solid, Jack played the lead really well and had a really kind and gentle aura about him whilst reading. We are left knowing very little about his 'accident' eventually being given information as the book goes along giving us a backstory. His wife played the caring and supportive role. It's actually quite a small cast but I felt each character was important and played their roles. There were some conversations between characters what I felt were a little overdone, and a tiny bit disjointed and not very.... realistic? But very minor in detail and hardly detracts from the otherwise brilliant writing style. Coming from the UK it had a really homely and realistic feel to it, and having actually visited the authors hometown on a couple of occasions felt that little bit more personable and relatable and easily able to create an image in my head of the scenes being portrayed.

In summary, Misty Ridge was a great little 'paranormal investigation' read that offers something a little different with some nice twists and turns. Yes I wish it was a little longer, and yes maybe some aspects of the story were a little far fetched and a little convenient but it was a spooky and fun read nonetheless and happy I was able to lap it up whilst laying in bed all day. Also a quick little nod to the afterword where the author describes how he himself and his family lived in a 'haunted' house when he was a little boy, and I'm assuming what gave the inspiration for this novel.

This was a fast paced story about a paranormal investigator and the research he carries out into the background of a haunted cottage. The investigator, Jack Keswick, was a likable character, and the story kept me interested and rooting for him as he tried to resolve the haunting, while also attempting to solve other mysterious goings on in his life revolving around astral projection and strange happenings in another part of the world.
This was a busy book with a lot going on. It offered up some genuine shocks and surprises and I found myself hooked early on.
I received my copy of this book from the author in return for a genuine and unbiased review.

I've read a few of David Brian's books, and in some cases these have been reader review copies. He was kind enough to supply an ARC of The Strange Case at Misty Ridge in reply for an honest review, but I have since bought the paperback copy as I love the cover and felt this to be a book worth keeping.

While I have enjoyed a majority of Brian's stories, this novel is my favorite. It tells the story of an amiable physic investigator, and his research into strange happenings at a country cottage named Misty Ridge.

A few years before becoming a paranormal researcher, Jack Keswick suffered life changing injuries that altered his world in more ways than he at first realized. Besides leaving him disabled, the accident opened up a faculty within him, and Jack now regularly experiences out-of-body events.

Jack begins to suspect that the ghostly haunting of Misty Ridge is somehow connected to his own astral travels, and possibly even to catastrophic happenings in another country. There are some great twists throughout the book, but none of them come over as jarring because the story is very cleverly written.

With good characterization and a suspenseful plot that moves at a good pace, The Strange Case at Misty Ridge proved an enjoyable read.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Strange Case at Misty Ridge by David Brian. I have now read a few books from this author and, having received a copy of this book from Brian in exchange for my honest review, I have to say this is the best I have read from him.
There is a lot goes on in this story of a haunted cottage, and with a few genuine shocks, and although the main focus remains on paranormal investigator Jack Keswick's attempt to solve the mystery of the haunting of Misty Ridge, the story branches off to other events involving astral projection and otherworldly entities. I felt the characters were well developed, and the story moved along at a good pace. There is definitely scope for a sequel here, and I hope the author has plans for such.

This book is a well written page turner, and if like me you are into all things creepy, you'll love the numerous twists that occur throughout the story.

The Strange Case at misty ridge focuses on a likable paranormal researcher named Jack , who is asked to investigate a country cottage that is alleged to be haunted. His investigations uncover much about the cottage's history, plus he is shocked to learn of forgotten events from his own past.

Things then get even weirder (in a good way) when Jack learns the haunting at Misty Ridge is tied to events occurring on another continent, and even worse still...
Good creepy fun with an amazing ending, I just never saw the twist coming!

This one didn't quite do it for me. I did find the main story idea - a homeowner trying to rid her house of ghosts, only to find out that she IS the ghost - inventive and interesting. But there was too much going on here, multiple stories that never really tied together well, in my opinion. I found the rambling, italicized passages hard to wade through. Some of the elements tied to the main character's supernatural experiences (cockroaches and spiders waging war for his immortal soul, and a fight between specters resulting in a blood-soaked carpet) were so odd that they fell flat, or didn't make any sense. These issues, coupled with a sort of ramshackle writing style that felt grammatically flawed at times gave this whole book a home-made feel that didn't work for me. The main idea, better fleshed out and done as a short story, may have been a winner.

First time reading this author and it was a pleasant experience. I was not totally wowed by the story but it was still well done. The characters lacked definition and I never felt that I really got to know who they were as individuals. I was expecting something a lot different from what I got though it was a nice change from the usual haunting you get. Would have liked a little more background on the house and town maybe to give some context.

Jack Keswick survived a tragedy that took the lives of a lot of people. Because he was unable to return to his usual work he was able to indulge his passion for paranormal investigation. Jack does not have very many memories of before the accident but has flashes once in a while that give him a look into what was.

Jack is contacted by Mrs. Featherstone about the haunting in her home and asks for his help to get rid of it. When he goes to her home in Claybrooke he finds that things are not as he thought.

The story seems to be more about Jack and his life and family than about what is happening at Misty Ridge. But I would still recommend this anyone who likes ghost stories.
