I've never been so unexpectedly inspired by a book.
I picked this up in a stationary shop in Manchester during an incredibly motivated, independent, and caffeinated day, where everything was going wrong but I didn't give up.
I usually detest books aimed at women that only discuss fashion and health, etc., but this guide to freelancing and business perfectly balanced discussion of finance, media, mental and physical health, and networking.
The book doesn't function just as a non-fictional guide, and similarly doesn't function as an amalgamation of "inspirational stories". Rather, it offers practical advice supported by accounts of specific industry experience by experts in their field, but not workers so skilled and well-established that their advice is unrelatable.
Anybody interested in working in the arts, for themselves, or anything entrepreneurial should read this.
This granted me the inspiration to start working towards my dream job, set up a career's meeting, clean up my social media, and network whenever possible.
Finally, this book is BEAUTIFULLY laid out- such a perfect balance of text and image; bullet pointed advice and chunks of biography. Its stylishness makes it a useful handful or coffee table book.

Sve u svemu, simpatično i potencijalno vrlo korisno.

Full of great tips and practical ideas to implement, so easy to digest and lots of inspiring characters in there.

The one thing I will say is that this book isn’t for working women with children as there is very little information on how to manage this extra unpaid work. Given that childbirth and managing child care responsibilities is one of the greatest hurdles to our success in the workforce, I would have thought there would be more material on this.

yay voices: i only rarely like the style of a coaching-style book, and this one was tops: crisp, firm & inspiring. especially enjoyed the interviews with women entrepreneurs - many strong, fascinating, inventive folks - lots of them women of colour - talking real & making well.

on its limitations: i'm a writer & dramaturg neither living in (nor giving much of a shit about) NYC, LA or London; this book is very big-city-design-&-fashion-centric, so a lot of the detail felt separate from my creative experience. career-wise and in the nitty-gritty details, it was full of helpful ideas.

I'm always rather hesitant whenever I read a "career" guidance book. In this case it was unwarranted. Geared towards women looking at creative careers, this book provided insight and thought provoking questions. The brief career highlights and interviews of women throughout the book was, for me, the most inspiring. Penny Martin (Editor, The Gentlewoman), Elaine Welteroth (Former Editor of Teen Vogue), Sandeep Salter (Founder, Picture Room) and many many more.

Being a seasoned career professional, I still found many things in this book informative and helpful.

Would highly recommend.

More US-focused, but the advice is still pretty universal. Whilst this book is geared towards those in creative industries or freelancers - I still like that this has tasks and checklists to work through and pages to fill out as you go, so it's really practical. I think this would be really useful for someone who is just starting out as an entrepreneur, and I would come back to this book if I ever started my own business or side hustle.

I found this book to be an odd mix of really beginner steps for freelancers/creatives/small business owners and uncoordinated interviews with women who've already "made it." The printing was also really poor in the copy that I had, as it was bound upside down and the back cover was slightly off. It isn't a book I'd recommend.

Great little book. Needs a bit of editing (a few typos here and there), but overall it contains useful advice and inspirational stories. The pink cover is somehow a paradox, for a book that aims to push women to be these successful, independent, creative types. Still, worth reading.

Really good, practical advance on freelancing/running a business that can be immediately put into action. Loved the interviews with creatives and found the section on finance particularly helpful. Would heartily recommend

Beautifully designed book that has in-depth information but fully prescribes a "choose your own adventure" model. Points for the social media and mental health section.

I liked the philosophy for working women that this book started with, but then it turned out to be more for freelancers and entrepreneurs. Not necessarily my area but a quick and interesting read!
