Regency Romantic Warriors #1

A Lieutenant at Large

Rate this book
Lochiel Cameron, a 25-year old lieutenant in the 42nd Scottish regiment, has to escort Elisabeth (Lizzie) Campbell from Ayre to Edinburgh.

Lizzie is to marry Lord John Montgomery, second son of Jonathan Montgomery, Duke of Rothford.

Lord John hates the fact that he has been forced to marry Lizzie. The only reason why he does not get out of this forced marriage is that he will become a Marquess of Lorna and Kintyre after his father dies, when he keeps to the promise his father made to his mother on her deathbed.

Lizzie Campbell, daughter of Barry Campbell, Baron of Ayre is temperamental and arrogant. When she understands that Lord John did not want to take the trouble to escort her to Edinburgh himself, she starts, out of revenge, a relationship with Lochiel, that goes on beyond the vows between her and Lord John at the altar.

After debauching Lizzie, Lord John returns to London. He leaves a devastated Lizzie behind in Edinburgh, who becomes almost a victim to his leery brother and heir to the dukedom Lord Randolph, if not for the help of her faithful servant Mattie and the worried Lady Audrey Agnew, Countess of Loghaire.
Lizzie has to flee Edinburgh when she discovers that her nights of passion with Lochiel have not been without consequences.

This was a good read for me, the books tells of a girl with an arranged marriage where the proposed husband has little to no interest with her. The book outlines what happens to both of them as they both search for love and happiness.

It is the love story of a lonely girl who is promised in her childhood to the second son of a duke. Lord John does not take it at all gracefully to be married at 24 years to a 16 year old girl, however beautiful she is. In her disappointment about Lord John's non- interest in her, she starts an affair with the lieutenant who has to escort her to her wedding, both not knowing that he is the Duke's 'bastard' son. It is a story of despair at life in 1804 and 2 people trying to snatch some happiness. It is Regency romance in a realistic way, and the illustrations are helpful insights about life in this 19th century novel. Every lover of Regency Romance should read it!

A pity I happened to read novel 7, (About Officers and Gentlemen) which is the sequel in the sequel first. This is Lizzie Campbell as a young, spoilt girl, who takes advantages of Lochiel Cameron's horniness to revenge herself on her uninterested bridegroom Lord John. C. Hampton Jones seems to like twists and turns in her novels, not avoiding very sexy scenes. The illustrations give the novel something extra, I cannot help but like them. I especially go for the scenes between the elderly Duke of Rothford and the Countess of Loghaire, they are witty and romantic. Lovely new author!
