Without Words

Rate this book
After an accident in the line of duty, firefighter Roberto DeRosa’s life is turned upside down. His career fighting fires is over, and he’s left with an uncertain future and an injury that makes communicating difficult for him. The only time words flow easily is when they’re lyrics and he has a guitar in his hands. Talking to women is definitely out, especially if they have bright blue eyes that seem to see right into his soul.

Dani Hodge is on the brink of realizing her dream of opening a small combination wine and book store in San Diego’s funky Ocean Beach neighborhood. But before she can open the doors, there’s work to be done, more work than she can do herself.

When the tattooed guy who completely ignored her at a bar walks by and offers her a hand wrangling a tile saw, Dani can’t afford to say no—and why would she say no to Mr. Strong and Silent when his stare conveys more than words could?

I'm USA Today Bestselling author Delancey Stewart. My contemporary romances run the gamut of settings and setups, but they always deliver humor, heart and heat. It's a guarantee.

I write from my home in Denver, CO, where I manage a household full of boys and men. Okay, only one man. The hubs. But two boys. I mean, three if you count the hubs. (You see why I do words and not numbers. I was told there'd be no math in this bio. Someone lied.)

I grew up in California and have had more jobs than anyone on earth (personal trainer, pharmaceutical rep, copywriter, tech writer, marketing director, wine seller, elementary school teacher... I'm not kidding. The list. It goes on.) But the one I love the most is writing, in part because I get to meet people who love books and stories as much as I do! 2.5 stars.

Being unfamiliar with this author, it was the blurb that attracted me to the story and all the possibilities it held.

"I could barely form a sentence in a public place. My emotions were out of control half the time and I was still incapable of reining them in..."

Without Words started out well and, despite it niggling that Rob's communication skills didn't come over as being particularly hindered all things considered, on the whole I found him likeable, I enjoyed the dual POV, and the chemistry between himself and Dani worked well with secondary characters each bringing additional value overall.

"...this fragile and vulnerable, strong and inescapably sexy man would certainly break my heart if I let him."

Dani I found a little frustrating, and although I didn't necessarily agree with some of her decisions, at the same time I could understand her reasoning. That was until the 85% mark, when what empathy I had for her, along with my hope that she and Rob would find their HEA, went flying out of the window at warp speed taking a star with it. And all it took was one short sentence.

description

Well, it was more a case of me muttering WTF because I'm no Julie Andrews, but still,

description

This was a story that showed potential and although Delancey Stewart's writing was easy enough to get along with in the main, I have to be honest in that I was hoping for more emotion and, considering the title and blurb, a little more focus on Rob overcoming his injury. Sadly though that one sentence killed all my investment in this couple in an instant.

Light, sweet and sexy.

Almost a year after his accident, ex-firefighter Rob DeRosa is still trying to figure out what to do with his life while playing the guitar at his friend’s bar at nights and walking his dog under the San Diego sun during the day. He can never be a fireman again, he had to relearn how to walk and talk and there’s really not much that interests him. Until he literally feels the Earth move when he stares straight into bright blue eyes that instantly seem to calm everything in him. Can he gather the courage to talk to her?

If only Do-It-Yourself were that simple Dani Hodge wouldn’t have be cursing at the dreaded tile saw where anyone and everyone could hear. Fortunately for her, the man who comes to her rescue is none other than the silent guitar player who ignored her at a bar. Even though her brain short-circuits just by looking at him, she can’t refuse his offer to help otherwise her dream of opening a wine/book store will turn into a nightmare. But can she open up her heart to believe he’s not just temporary?

Without Words is my first book by author Delancey Steward and hopefully it won’t be the last. I found it to be touching, sweet and sexy with endearing characters, including Dani’s sister and Rob’s BFF Trent who will hopefully get their own book, and who can resist a supportive, sweet, understand sidekick of the four legged variety? Sampson, Rob’s dog was adorable! Oh and Trent and Rob’s firemen friends...

The pacing was good. Being from San Diego myself, I really enjoyed the vivid imagery of a place I’m so familiar with, it made me want to visit walk around OB, go to Balboa and see everything from the author’s perspective. The plot was interesting on Rob’s side, although the family dynamic on his father’s side also hit home and didn’t ring true with me because my father’s family is from Ensenada too and I’ve heard of the traditions mentioned in the story that would create such conflict.

Rob is such an interesting character. He’s the strong and silent type with hidden vulnerability, I only wish Steward would have delved more into his characterization. I feel as though their story had the potential to be deeply moving. Dani was bubbly and likeable, but a bit too guarded and at one point insensitive to Rob’s condition. Their chemistry was undeniable though and I loved every sweet, sexy moment they spent together.

Without Words is a standalone contemporary romance by Delancey Steward. It is told from both points of view and has a happy ending. Fans of sweet and sexy romance will enjoy it.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, and what a delightful find this was. It has everything I like...a damaged vulnerable hero, a little heat, some romance, some obstacles, a little angst, a little misunderstanding. Now, I could stand my hero to be a bit more damaged and more of an asshole, but I really enjoyed this. It was a light, easy read, the writing was well done, it was well edited...and just what I needed.

2.5-3 ***

Don’t we all like the broken and tortured Heroes? I know I do and this blurb hits the nail on the head.

Without Words is a sweet romance where both main characters fight the insecurities that they have and overcome to be who they want to be and do what they want to do in their life.

Rob is trying to get his life back on track and adjusting to his life with a traumatic brain injury. There are things that help keep him calm, singing is one of them.

Out one night at his buddies bar he finally sees some sunshine in his life but doesn’t know how to tackle his issues. Dani has had a tough time but her dream is finally becoming a reality. With Rob’s help she gets nearer to her dream.

I liked both characters but their interactions were so stilted that I couldn’t believe the chemistry that they had and believe me I wanted to.

The story flows well in most places at least. I enjoyed the characters interaction although their insecurities got in the way of me enjoying the book more than I could have. But the author still manages to offer us a sweet read with a happy ending.

Just not my cuppa and if my buddy Jeri likes it then I know that I won’t although I did have high hopes for this one.

There is no greater BOOK HIGH than meeting an author's work for the first time. I popped my Delancey Stewart book cherry and it was one blissful bomb! Without Words is a SLOW BURN of feels on fire. Raw. Riveting. Relentless. This emotional explosion of words detonated me!

A hot and heartwarming fireman-turned construction worker meets a sunshine-filled and sweet gal, both with broken hearts, halves looking to be whole...sign me up!!!

She shone with clarity. She was happiness and light. A little voice inside me told me she looked like hope.

Dani is a ray of sunshine, spreading light in the world when she's from a world of darkness. Her resiliency and positive attitude are admirable. A beauty inside and out, I adored Dani!

There was something heavy weighing this man down. Rob carried a burden, and I was having a lot of trouble keeping myself from wanting to take it from him.

Rob is PURE PERFECTION! This broken alpha with a beautiful heart stole my heart, OWNING every ounce of me. The chemistry between Rob and Dani is so combustible that I felt their fire fused with angst through the pages.

"Playing guitar...It helps clear my mind. Makes me feel better, less broken. But then I met you. And when I'm around you...I feel the same way. Like I can think straight, see things clearly."

Without Words made me SMOLDER and SWOON. This soul-soaring story pushed me to the edge. Oozing with power and passion peppered with angst, Without Words is a beautiful and broken love story strung together by feels. This is one soulful sensation I'm glad I met.

I really enjoyed this one. Loved these characters. They felt so honest and true that you could imagine them as your best friends. The writing is excellent and the story is intriguing with a nice flow.

Life has dealt Roberto DeRosa quite a few blows but none have been as frustrating as the last. While on the job as a firefighter, Rob suffered a traumatic brain injury that has left him with speech issues. Verbalizing his thoughts is difficult so most of the time he chooses not to speak. Corralling his thoughts is also difficult but a couple of things seem to calm and soothe him enough to slow his thoughts. One is his guitar. The second is Dani Hodge. The beautiful young woman who introduced herself at the club but he was unable to speak to. Now he's getting to know her as he helps her renovate the storefront she's working on for her new shop. Will she ever be able to understand and accept him as he is?

A great read and one I highly recommend.

This may be right up there with the best books I've read this year. It's touching, emotional and yet romantic all the while looking at a life lived with a TBI (traumatic brain injury). I absolutely loved this book.
It opens with Rob playing guitar at his friend Trent's bar when he spots two girls come in. There is something about her that calls to him, and when they lock eyes, he misses a chord or two. Afterward she comes up to him and says "Hi." Here we meet Dani. Rob's speech is at times slow and he doesn't respond back. Dani isn't sure quite how to take that, she and her sister leave Trent's and head home. Dani is getting ready to open her own business and her new space needs work from the floor to the ceiling. Dani is a bubbling ball of energy, at times she's over the top. Her sister Amy is her tether. Dani was semi-burned in a past relationship which makes her a little gun shy with Rob, having said that because of Rob's inability to express emotion at times, issues become confusing.
Somehow she ropes Rob into helping, returning back to Trent's again. Rob and Trent live together, both San Diego Firefighters. Rob was injured in a horrendous fire, it's Trent who pulls him out. Rob's recovery is slow and arduous and frustrating. Rob has a dog Samson, and we get to see plenty of Samson in the story, he's a constant by Rob's side. Rob hasn't really worked since the accident which his stepfather repeatedly reminds him of. (Ugh, what a jackhat that guy was) and his mother remains silent. Then we have Rob's father and brothers who are still in Mexico and own a vineyard there. There's a whole different dynamic going on there from the story of he and Dani. Dani and Amy have their own stories as well. Delancey balanced these stories so very well and managed to loop them so beautifully together.
This book just did it all for me. About 20 pages in I knew it was a winner and that there was a great story in here. Turned out there were a couple. The storyline is unique, has some nice steam, very real emotional issues dealing with relationships and the unknowns of dealing with TBI's. I think she captured that extremely well. Especially listening to Rob's inner dialogue. I hope we see more of the characters from this story. I'd love to see Amy and Trent... hint, hint.
Fantastic book Delancey!! Absolutely off the charts. I'd give it 10 stars.

**I received Without Words from Entangled Publishing and Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and hones review**

Without Words by Delancy Stewart is the first book in what I hope will be a series of books featuring Dani's sister, Amy, Trent and all of the firemen from Rob's old firehouse. This book had me from the first paragraph to the conclusion with the tender way the author wrote about TBI injury Roberto had. We always hear about our soldiers who have this after fighting overseas but even I didn't think of a firefighter having one after an accident.

Danielle Hodge is finally realizing her dream of opening a wine and book shop in Ocean Beach, CA. But first she has to find a carpenter who will help her with cabinetry, counters and tables. When her sister drag's her to a bar where she meets Rob playing his guitar. There's instant attraction between the two but Rob is still struggling with speaking clearly after his TBI injury. But Dani doesn't care because she's interested in the person within Rob who is very caring. When he comes to her aid after the tile saw breaks a few too many tiles, they soon hit it off. I loved how the author brings Samson the dog into the story even when Dani soon makes them a couple. But Rob will soon be faced with a decision that could have him leaving Ocean Beach for his families winery. Will he leave or will he chose to stay and pursue his carpentry skills?

All his life he has been in the shadow of his brothers and when Roberto DerRosa decides to become a fire fighter he feels like he finally found his niche. But an accident leaves him having to learn how to talk and walk again he feels adrift but he now has to find something new to do. But his friend and fellow firefighter gives him a singing gig in his bar as well as live with him he meets Dani. Little does he know that she has the answer that he's been waiting for that will lead him to a new career. But when his brother shows up with news about their father who will Rob choose? He doesn't want to fail Dani, his family or always being the middle sibling with no real purpose.

This is the first book by Delancy Stewart I've read but when the next book mentioned on her website is available I'll be waiting anxiously for it to be released.

I just finished reading WITHOUT WORDS by Delancey Stewart, which was my first book by this author. I liked her writing style and the story was well developed. What I did not totally understand honestly was the choice of title. Rob’s problems were sever but the title made them seem even worse than they were so I felt it was misleading in a way, but that might be only me so you don’t necessarily need to pay attention to this thought of mine.

The story itself felt fresh so I think it’s a perfect spring read (and please do not ask my why but it just felt like that to me). I could easy connect with both leading characters and I like their developing / building relationship. The story flowed at a nice and steady pace as you will be used to from this publisher (I really feel that it is a trademark of them). I can fully recommend this book to anybody that liked the blurb and the only reason it did not get the full 5 stars is my own rating system that only allows those for novels that give me emotional outbursts in any way.

"Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review"
This was a pleasant read with the right amount of drama and pain and I connected easily to both main characters. The secondary characters are also engaging and the setting (San Diego) is beautiful.
I really liked how the main characters (Rob and Dani) connect, understand and support each other, even when justifiable doubts and uncertainty appear. I loved the heroine’s healing power over the hero, it was subtly and gradually introduced in the story and it was quite convincing.
Usually I don’t like first person dual POV but I didn’t mind about it in this story, I guess because it was well done and I wasn’t too much aware of it as often happens.
And the hero is great! I was hooked right from the beginning because we don’t see this type of wounded hero that much. I loved the way the author linked Rob’s voice problems with music and I would have liked to see that dimension more developed. Overall I also loved the handling of the TBI’s effects and problems and how the voice issues were depicted (then again I’d love to see it a bit more expanded).
I'm grateful to the publisher, Entangled Publishing, and NetGalley for providing a free copy.

I had the blurb that got me in. Then I read a couple excerpts from the book. Then one excerpt had me saying that I must read this one. This man was in pain, feeling tortured, found the one, and his soul knew it deep down. The sorrow in his inner thoughts were just enough to keep me wanting to read more. I could feel his devastation in losing that first chance to say hello.

This one read had a solid foundation with emotions raw and pure. Good characters. Roberto was one character that spoke to me without many words. He inner thoughts were telling. He was a male that had life happen to him and had to learn to cope with it in a new and different way. Music and her.

Dani was the calm that he needed to set things almost back to right. She was the salve that he needed to make thing a bit more bearable. Dani and Roberto embark on a true friendship that becomes more with time. They calm each other but in different ways. He becomes her rock and her his sunshine.

This read was something different that I needed to mix things up a bit. You will not pick up a read like this every day. It got to my soul and stirred me in ways that makes me want more of the book and at the same time not. This couples romance was beautiful and emotional. There were the ups and downs. There were even times when you really wanted to have a stern talking to Dani. I usually want to smack the male but this time Dani earned all those rights herself. The dual POV makes things feel more intimate and personal while providing more insight to both characters a bit more.

Looking for a read that is different and not the normal everyday romance. This one has a few struggles and even obstacles but the romance is there.

Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. Another emotional read, and I have to say that I need a break, from them, I need a book, just to laugh now. So there were times, that I wanted to reach inside and just knock them out, and sometimes just hug them. We had frustration, sweetness, tissue moments. Dani and Rob, were both good people, and they both went thru so much, it was heartbreaking, no one, no one should have to go thru what they, ( and no I am not giving you a clue, you have to read it, to know), just know that they have to overcome some deep situations, and because of it build a wall to protect themselves. I did like them, however at times I wanted to slap them, understandably so, so even though it took them a while, to figure stuff out, they did get there. Anyway, it was good, but it was a back and forth, and I could not give it more, but I could not give it less, and I did like secondary characters, and I am sure you will enjoy it, this is my take, you might have something else..

Every once in awhile I come across a young adult romance that has all the typical plots and conflicts of that genre, but still manages to surprise me. And by typical plots and conflicts I mean the hero and heroine with the unfortunate childhoods, and really poor communication skills. I spend a good deal of time reading YA romances wanting to scream “Just talk to each other all ready!” Except this time, there’s actually a good reason for the hero to not communicate well.

Roberto deRosa made a life for himself as a firefighter in San Diego. Growing up, he was the middle child of three boys. The oldest was the smartest, the youngest the most charming, but even though he was the “workhorse” of the family vineyard in Mexico, Rob was overlooked and left out of his father’s will. But life was working just fine for him until an accident during a warehouse fire resulted in a traumatic brain injury. After a year of rehab, physically he’s fine, but now his brain functions a little slower, and the words don’t come out as effortlessly as they used to.

Danielle Hodges is finally about to open the combination wine bar and bookstore she’s been dreaming of for years. Raised by her grandmother, she grew up believing men won’t stick around, and after her last relationship gave her no reason to believe otherwise, she’s decided to focus only on her shop. But when she meets Rob at a bar, and then sees him again a couple days later when he happens to walk by her shop and offer his help, she’s reluctantly smitten. Her friendly, upbeat, talkative personality is a stark contrast to Rob’s new personality, which is quiet and slightly brooding.

For Rob, Dani is his best hope for returning to the life he lost.

This had been the first day I’d spent with someone who didn’t know everything about what had happened to me in the last year, who didn’t know all the things that were wrong with me. Who didn’t ask. It had been like a vacation. I’d spent a whole day away from myself.

Of course, there’s the requisite angst as a result of them not talking about how they feel, and the back and forth as a result. Dani’s insecurities about men get the best of her steely resolve to be independent and self-reliant.

All the focus and center I’d found this morning were sucked down into the swirling vortex of uncertainty. I sat on the green couch, still holding the photo, and let myself cry. I’d be focused and strong tomorrow. Today I was confused and lonely.

Rob and Dani are heartwarming characters who are doing their best to deal with the hand life has dealt them, to find their way in life. When they meet, the attraction is instant, but neither jumps feet first into the relationship. The slow progression from friends to lovers is sweet and satisfying. There’s a scene with them washing hands in a sink that is reminiscent of Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze spinning pottery on the wheel in Ghost that almost had me fanning myself, it was so steamy. (Did I just date myself with that reference?!)

I loved Rob and Dani’s story. My heart broke for the challenges Rob faced because of his brain injury, and cheered when he found kind, sweet Dani. The hero and heroine are people you can root for, and the side characters added extra dimension and depth to their story. It doesn’t happen often, but I was very pleasantly surprised by - and thoroughly enjoyed - this young adult romance!

I'm not gonna lie, the blurb hooked me on this one. And because of the blurb, I waited until I was in the right space mentally to read it because I was sure it would gut me. And for the most part, the book was soooooooo heart-breakingly-warming. But then things happen. Things are said. And the entire thing went down fast ....

This is not my first time with an author/story going wackadoodle on me. I've said this before but apparently I need to remind some people: Words matter. We should be really careful how we string them together . The only reason I made it to the end of this book is because the wording disaster didn't happen until the almost end.

This story as a whole is really actually well done and well written. Dani and Rob are two very likeable characters that play off each other well. Their connection is apparent and their struggles are real. And struggles they had. Which is going to lead me to the portion of this review that is #eyetwitching ...

I'm not going to put in a quote or hide a spoiler because I'm really curious to see how many people catch the insurmountable error that Delancey Stewart made in this story. But I will say this, Rob suffers from a very traumatic brain injury. He suffers from some speech impediments because of it. He deals with this the best he can. There is a point in the story where Dani verbalizes her frustrations in how he deals with it. Where she diminishes him for his choices. That never should have happened. It is not her pain. It is not her trauma. She doesn't get the choice on how he survives it. She doesn't get an opinion. If she was standing in front of me today I would have throat punched her. So authors, chose your words carefully. They matter....

I’m left without words…literally…I’m not sure I can come up with the adequate words for how phenomenal this book was. There aren’t enough stars to give it! I was moved to tears of sadness and tears of joy. It’s very rare to have characters affect me like these two did, especially Rob!

Rob is a man trapped in a dark place, shunning most people, except his inner circle. He was hurt badly in an accident as a firefighter. He has worked hard to heal his body, but he is still trying to find himself in the world. He has a hard time communicating with others, so he has decided it is better to live life alone. He does let his friends in but not completely. The only thing he trusts completely is his constant companion, his dog, Sampson. The only peace he has is playing his guitar and singing, but that begins to change when he lays eyes on Dani one night while he is singing.

Dani has also experienced darkness in her past, but it is a different kind than Rob’s. She has worked hard to put that behind her, but she still does struggle with trusting her heart to others with the exception of her sister, Amy. Yet, when she sees Rob, there is a pull, both physically and spiritually.

There is no denying the chemistry these two have, and they try so hard to deny it. They try to stay away from each other. Their minds tell them to run, but their bodies are pulling them toward each other. They begin slowly letting each other in, but how long will it be before one of them runs?

“Maybe two people with enough crap in their pasts could fill each other’s voids.” ~ Rob

I have never come across two characters who have found such a special place in my heart. They are opposites…Rob is darkness, and Dani is light! Stewart writes so well that Dani’s color and aura jump off the pages. She makes Rob want to be a part of life again, to belong to something. With the sweetness between these two, there is also heat and chemistry, and Stewart definitely knows how to build on that. She will leave you with butterflies in your stomach all while making your heart melt! All of these factors are combined perfectly to keep you flying through the book!

Delancey Stewart is a new writer to me, but she definitely has flown up to the top of my list of favorite authors. Without Words is well-written with fantastic character development. She manages to make characters out of a sweet woman, Dani’s Nan, who is no longer here, and a sweet, loving dog, Sampson. Add in Trent and Amy and this book is PERFECTION! I’m hoping we might get Amy’s story later on!

overall enjoyed. I love rob and his dog Sampson. My heart went out to Rob from the beginning. He is a survivor and now was floundering trying to find his place in the world after all he went through. His mom seemed loving but his stepdad boy not good. His friend Trent was great and supportive. But still you truly love Rob from the beginning and see him struggling to find his footing. when he meets Dani words leave him and he is so uncertain about himself now that he didn’t think she would want someone like him. Again your heart just breaks for this amazingly talented, sweet, kind and caring guy.

Dani grew on me but she blew it with one word and her way of distrusting Rob even before the relationship took off. She clumped him in a category that made it doomed to fail. As the relationship built on that awesome chemistry they had she would knock it down because of fear. What irked me was when he had a family sitch after she did something stupid and upset Rob and made him feel he isn’t worth it she blamed him in my eyes. I knew it was how she justified it even after all she did to push him away. Not only that but she like said earlier made this one comment when she heard an explanation from Trent that just really got my blood boiling. I mean come on after all he went through for that to be her thought was so so wrong. The guy is still trying to find his way after a year of struggling to get on his feet I mean literally struggling to be on his feet and she felt that way. Grrr....Overall though she wasn’t a terrible person just frustrating when it came to relationships and feelings.

the story was one where we see Rob change the most. Not in words but in his belief in himself and who he could be. He started as a lost young man trying to figure out where he belonged. And after meeting Dani and falling in love he became more confident in himself. He was very talented when it came to carpentry and it was Dani who helped him realize this and that is was his passion. She did this through her store and encouragement. His family dynamic was complicated but you see that he does work on this as well but the biggest thing he did was work no himself. He realized he was stagnate and needed to work on himself and become stronger and more confident before others could believe in him and he did do this. He found himself again and found love.

Dani and Rob had great chemistry from the beginning and her acceptance of him was wonderful. They has some fun scenes, romantic scenes, sexy scenes and emotional scenes that pull on your heartstrings. The intimate moments go beyond the bed and their openness was wonderful to see. She didn’t push him but encouraged him although again she would bring him in and than push him away leaving him confused on her feelings. They had bumps but for the most part worked through them until the end. Difference being Rob used it as a wakeup call and Dani used it as a excuse at the end. It was Rob who made all the effort and Dani who didn’t want to open her eyes or take any responsibility. When did she? When her fun and vibrant sister Amy let her have it and gave her a dose of reality. You get both POV’s but it was Rob’s that will blow you away and have you feel so much. Dani’s perspective lets you see why she is wary and cautious at times. I was glad they got their HEA but was hoping Dani would change more.

The story is sweet, endearing and alluring. Rob draws you in and just keeps you riveted to see where he will end up and if he gets the love he deserves in the end. You want to see this man find his way and in this wonderful story you see that and more as he falls in love. You see a swoony side, a fun side and a introspective side to Rob. You see Dani as strong and independent. It is Rob and Sampson that steal the book and it is Rob’s story and seeing him find himself and love that grabs you and keeps you in the story of a man that without words can convey himself and his emotions. Glad he got his HEA.

This was a cute romance not very involved but flowed easy with a nice plot. The main characters Dani and Rob were easy to like and were quiet enjoyable to read about.

Rob is recovering from being in a coma.He still has issues and is not yet a hundred 100 percent.Still dealing with physical and mental issues he is working things out on what he plans to do with the rest of his life.Meeting Dani seemed to put the spunk back in him.Gave him hope and made him happy just by spending time with her.She was drawing him out of his shell little by little.

I loved Rob he had a sense of humor, was talented, somber and perhaps withdrawn and sweet but with everything he has gone through the past year you had to expect the good with the bad.

Dani had a vibrant personality was upbeat, funny, sweet and kind and had a sense of humor.

Dani and Rob's chemistry was apparent from their very first pages. The head over heels kind. These two made a really cute couple. With both working through their own insecurities their romance had some ups and downs but there was no doubt they truly cared for one another.

The story contained a great cast of characters .My favorite part of the story had to be the hide and seek games that Dani and Rob played with one another kept things interesting.

Light fun read that we throughly enjoyed. This was a first time author for us and as we enjoyed the story for me though I need more excitement and drama and romance in the books that I read.

"Without Words" by Delancey Stewart is the story of Rob and Dani, two souls that both have some baggage and aren't sure about where the intense attraction can or will go. Rob, having been injured as a firefighter, has issues with his speech. Honestly, while I found him quiet, I didn't necessarily see a severe speech impediment when he spoke, although his inner thoughts did put forth his frustrations with not being able to express himself the way he wished. Regardless, I really, really liked Rob. I found him endearing (yes, sexy and hot, too, of course! :) He was so kind and I loved how he treated Dani and, of course, Samson too! Dani was on the verge of opening her dream of a wine/book store. Dani was someone I thought I could and would want to be friends with. Her hangup about guys though did wear on me some. The journey Dani and Rob venture on throughout this book, for me, was sweet and enjoyable too. It was paced well and the writing was fluid and effortless to read. Being my first book by Ms. Stewart, I was pleased and look forward to, hopefully, Amy and Trent's story next! (received copy for honest review)

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, secrets, and heartbreak.

This is Dani and Roberto’s story. Roberto had an accident while working that caused him issues he is still dealing with currently. He has trouble communicating from that injury. Dani sees him at the bar performing and is drawn to him but when he seemingly blows her off she feels like he just rejected her. When he offers her help, Dani is surprised but not about to fall at his feet. You can feel the pull and sparks between them. Dani just thinks he strong and silent but once they get to know each other better she seems to understand him. Can she help him to move on from his accident and learn to live a little? With his performing he feels a calm after his accident now he also feels that calm around Dani. Can these two work together toward a relationship or will fear hold them back?

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

"This was insane. I'd never been on a knife's edge like this, never wanted so badly for a man to just. Touch. Me." Yes, Delancey Stewart builds up some major chemistry and heat in her new book! Our hero, Rob deRosa, may have been injured, but he definitely has the smoldering and hot hero requirement. Rob has suffered an traumatic brain injury while on the job as a firefighter. The subject is handled so well and makes the character vulnerable in ways that I really enjoyed. Make no mistake, Rob is still our alpha hero! I enjoyed getting insight of his thought process.

Dani, our heroine, is instantly attracted to him as he sings on stage at a club. When he appears again out of the blue and begins to help renovate her store, the attraction can't be denied. Dani is fiercely independent and has to find a way to let Rob into her life. The story that leads up to their "happily ever after" has some twists and turns. I really enjoyed the story that gets us there.

Great story and wonderful characters!

Without Words was an awesome story of triumph and tribulations, rising above what life has thrown at you in one form or another. It was emotional, I shed happy and sad tears as well as laughed! This story will have you melted to your spot from beginning to end. Will Dani and Rob's demons keep them apart or will they allow each other to be their calming center? You'll have to read Without Words to find out! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book via Tasty Book Tours through NetGalley for an honest blog tour review. Due to sexual situations and adult language, this book is recommended for readers 17 and older!
Favorite Passages ~
• She shone with clarity. She was happiness and light. A little voice inside me told me she looked like hope.
• If her daughter was from here and was near my age, she’d probably gone to my high school. And I didn’t need to rehash that nightmare.

Rob is a broken hero trying to find his place in the world after a tragic accident. Dani is a dynamic heroine dealing with past insecurities while opening her own business. Their worlds converge in this touching romance that demonstrates that the right person in your life can make all the difference. Delancey Stewart brings the issue of TBI to life and tackles it with just the right amount of hope and apprehension. I loved the small details peppered throughout that bring this story full circle. This book definitely has the potential to be a series, let’s hope so!*

Readers looking for a straightforward tale of two people trying to be independent after arising from adversity will get all that and more with this charming contemporary romance. It's a story full of instantly likable characters dealing with issues that are easy to relate to and which had me furiously turning the pages to see what happens next.

Rob DeRosa's always felt lacking. From his father's careless treatment of him, to his stepfather's constant criticism, Rob's never felt that he ever measured up. Living in an affluent neighborhood, with his different ethnicity, further alienated him and had him desperate to make something of himself. When a life-altering firefighting accident leaves him with brain damage all those negative feelings are compounded and leave him feeling uncertain of his future. With anger management issues and problems forming sentences he doesn't feel he has anything to offer but once he locks eyes with the bubbly Dani Hodge he starts seeing himself in a whole new light. With her he sees possibilities, a sense of peace and contentment that has him feeling worthy once again, until fears and misunderstandings get in the way. Rob's immensely appealing with a kind heart and though he speaks few words he was still utterly charming. It's clear he's lonely, with his dog Sampson one of his closest companions, which had me feeling sympathetic towards his plight. He tended to overthink things though, worried about things he didn't need to and always assumed he was the problem. For such a big, strong guy I was sad to see his self-esteem brought so low.

Dani's childhood was one of neglect with her sister her main form of support and protection until the day their Nan took them in. All her negative past experiences have taught her to doubt love and assume that she'll always be left behind when she puts her heart on the line. To keep from being hurt again she focuses on starting up her own business, closing off her heart until she hears Rob's haunting voice. That chance encounter leads to an even closer connection that has her falling for him just as life takes another unexpected turn for him. Dani's a very likable heroine whose joy is infectious. Her and her sister Amy are a supportive sisterly duo whose interactions are caring and playful. They may be opposites in many ways but are always there for each other when they need help most which endeared both of them to me. A previous bad break-up has her leery of the instant intense feelings she has for Rob and has her jumping to conclusions that end up hurting both of them. Her attitude frustrated me at times, created problems where they didn't need to exist. For all the joy and serenity she brought Rob though I found myself liking her.

This was a sweet story overall with a few steamy encounters late in the story. It was a slow burn that kept me turning the pages, rooting for these two bruised souls to embrace their love for each other. That slow burn was full of cuteness that had me smiling as they danced around each other like grade schoolers. The angst in this story was internal, doubts that each carried, but there were familial issues overshadowing Dani and Rob too. These issues seemed to come out of nowhere and in dealing with them I felt myself being dragged away from the loving cocoon of Dani and Rob's romance. Despite that I still found myself drawn to this couple and cheering them on as they worked past their doubts and misunderstandings. Rob's brain damage was depicted realistically and with a gentle hand. His frustrations were heartbreaking and made his hard-fought HEA all the richer. Surrounding this likable couple were an equally likable cast of secondary characters from Amy to Rob's firefighter best friend Trent, who are pairing off themselves in a relationship I would've loved to see play out in greater detail. Add in a slew of other supportive firefighter friends and readers are left with all sorts of hopes for the future. Though this book acts as a standalone I'd definitely love to come back to this world with all its sexy firefighters running to the rescue!

I can't ever put any of Delancey's books down. Without words was no exception. I was hooked immediately with Dani's strength and was intrigued by Roberto and his brain injury. The writing is powerful and takes place in a great setting. My imagination took me right to OB. The only disappointment was that it ended way too soon. Definitely worth the read!

Every now and then you read a story that is so beautiful it leaves you in the state of awe for a long while after. Without Words is one of those stories. It is heart-shattering with its pain, torment, and agony, it is raw with life-like emotions and deep feelings, yet it heals all the wounds with the devotion and tenderness, the pure joy of life shining through.
Roberto DeRosa and Dani Hodge have a nearly magical connection, the energy around them sizzling in the air with heat and yearning. It is like their broken souls recognize the need for comfort in each other - like they are the two half's of a whole finally coming together.
Both Rob and Dani had issues from the past, from their childhood, that comes to the surface mudding the waters and churning the emotions. With Dani's trust issues and fear of abandonment Rob's problems to communicate might seem like the worst match, but they have to learn to connect on a deeper lever to get over the hurdles and interact in a way that is suitable for both.
The process of healing, learning and growing as a human being is a delicate and fragile development for both Dani and Rob, however with the support of their loved ones, and with each other, they find the safe haven, the place of trust, faith, and hope where this kind of flourishing is possible.
Without Words amazed me with its beauty and depth. The dual first person point of view gave the insights to Rob's mind that was needed with his challenge to communicate and brought alive the intensity of those two bruised souls seeking for each other. It made me want to believe in love at the first sight and in soulmates, in the one true match. It captivated my mind and charmed my heart, it filled me with joy, left my smiling and believing in serendipity.
What an alluring story of love and life!

You have to love Dani, the girl is just so cute and the things that pop out of her mouth tend to have a different meaning at times, “it looks amazing,” I said, unable to keep from clapping my hands like a child. “I love caulk.” I couldn’t help it, the words came out before I thought about what I’d said. He turned to look at me, his full lips pulling up slightly at the corners." Rob picked a great woman in Dani, she knows how to get his juices going, “when you touch me, I just want to throw you across the bar and push your skirt up, and…” She grinned, and I swear she bounced a little in her seat. Her hand landed on my knee again, and she raised an eyebrow. “You’re killing me.” I really loved this book, I loved the chemistry between Rob and Dani.
