After losing her job, her bestie, and her boyfriend all at once, Jessa Phillips has no choice but to move back home and start over.
When she knocks on Alex Rogan’s door, she's searching for employment but what she gets is so much more than a job. He's tall, muscular, gorgeous...and very mysterious.
Jessa can’t shake the attraction and desperately wants more than he's willing to provide. Can she get Alex to drop his guard in order to give them a real chance? To let her be his LAST?
LAST is a sweet contemporary romance that takes you on an inspirational journey. Jessa is a spunky girl who is down on her luck. Alex needs a serious intervention in the form of a strong-minded woman. This was so fun to read!
This is JL Davis' debut novel and she's definitely found a fan in me! I look forward to Brittany's book.
'Last' was an easy, low angst, enjoyable book. I liked that it wasn't full of drama, because sometimes you just need a break from all that.
Jessa Phillips is recently jobless, single and without a best friend. The reason for having an ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend is that she caught them in bed together. 👎 So, what does she do? Jessa moves back home to start over. Needing a job, she puts up flyers for her cleaning services. Running into an old friend, she tells Jessa that her uncle is in need of some help. So, Jessa takes the opportunity and knocks on the door of Alex Rogan.
Alex Rogan is a mystery. There were things in his past that he didn't want to relive. He wanted all those ghosts to say buried. He liked his solitude and wanted to keep it that way. But when he opens the door and lays eyes on Jessa, he knows he's in trouble.
What I liked about Jessa and Alex was that they didn't jump right in to their obvious attraction. They took their time to get to know each other. I liked how Jessa helped Alex through the things that happened in his past; that he had yet to deal with. Jessa was patient with Alex, and they were there for one another. They were adorable together and they learned from each other, it was beautiful.
Once again, this was an enjoyable read and I'll read more by J.L.
BOOKWORMS! Man oh man this book! First let me say a huge thanks to the people over at Social Butterfly PR for sending me an ARC copy for an honest review! This was definitely the kind of pick me up I needed to get out of my reading slump!
Right from the beginning you get drawn into Jessa and her life and all the things that are wrong with it! I found myself getting sucked into everything she was doing...especially working for ALEX ROGAN!
From the beginning to end it was a non stop roller coaster ride of emotions and intense scenes. There were some moments where I felt like the author was repeating key information more times than needed. (Like I would read it at the beginning and it would pop up again in the middle) and sometimes the same or very similar sentences would be repeated but not entirely necessary. I also felt like when it got to the middle that everything was a little too perfect and I was waiting for a shoe to drop...
Lastly, I really loved how to truly see the pure emotion that Jessa and Alex go through. There is totally a possibility of having a second book for another character which I am so badly hoping so!
Overall I really loved this novel! This is the first for a brand new author, but I think that there were a lot of things that kept me reading! It was such a fast paced novel and I swear I couldn't put it down (Like I read it in a day!) Of course there were some things that weren't the best, but the steaminess definitely took over it!
I really enjoyed this book, it was light and easy to get caught up in these amazing characters fast love and second chance at happy ever after. The characters are easy to like and relate to which makes this book stick with you long after you are finished. Great Job J.L. it was a really good book that I would recommend to others who enjoy a great love story.
Title: Last Author: J.L. Davis Genre: Contemporary Romance Rating: 3/5
From what I can gather this is a new author on the scene and this is possibly their debut novel and it's a decent one at that.
The author has a riveting and modernistic style of writing that captivated me from the very beginning and held my attention all the way through. Likeable main characters Jessa and Alex with an equally likeable secondary character in the form of Jessa's new BFF Brittany make the book a satisfying read.
This was an appealing contemporary romance with a touch of light kink thrown in showing us that sometimes being first isn't all it's hyped up to be maybe just maybe it's best to be Last.
Jessa doesn't dwell long on her bad luck before she's transforming her life and getting herself a fresh start.
So when Alex comes into Jessa life, could they be just what each other need for a second chance at love. I just knew from the beginning that Jessa and Alex were perfect for each other, but nothing comes easy for either of them and with trouble lurking just around the corner how will they deal with it all and will it put a strain on them and their relationship.
Last is my first book I have read by J.L. Davis. I really enjoyed this read and the characters, Jessa and Alex. Last has angst, romance, and shows you the growing pains of overcoming the rough patches in life. I really loved the chemistry Jessa and Alex have instantly.
I felt for Jessa at the beginning. She has to lose her best friend, boyfriend, and her job all in one day. She needs a do over day! But things happen for a reason right? She has to get a new job and decides to start her own business. While advertising her services, she runs into an old high school classmate. She gets a job almost immediately and is stun when she meets her new boss. That is where we meet Alex and let me tell you he is yummy from the start.
Alex is beautifully complicated. He may have it all with the wealth, the looks, and the personality. What I found astonishing was how he did not see himself in that way. He would get embarrassed with the compliments that Jessa would give him. He is too cute! It was instant book-boyfriend love at first sight. But that made him more humble in my eyes. I can see why Jessa clicked with him. That is my type of man.
When the drama breaks out, my heart was pounding hard. I will not get into the "drama story line" because I want you to read it. But let me tell you it is GOOD! I also enjoyed the story part where the characters have hidden some secrets from one another, but were confident in each other to not allow them to break them. They may have not been each others firsts, but they will make sure to be each others last. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to our Romance readers!
This is my first book by J.L. Davis and it definitely won't be my last!
This is a light-hearted take on picking up all the pieces of your shattered life. About brushing the dirt off and getting back into life head first. Finding love and learning how to trust again.
The instant chemistry of the MCs made for a truly enjoyable story. They were incredibly easy to fall for and the story sucked you in from the beginning and had a nice flow to it.
The subjects in this book were ones I think a lot of us can relate to, making it an even better story.
I really liked this debut novel by J.L. Davis! It was a sweet romance with alot of sexy scenes! I loved Jessa, she was great. Alex, at times he annoyed me a little but I loved him. I did love Jessa and Alex together. They had great chemistry! Looking forward to reading more from this author!
Let me just say one thing. If this is her debut novel I can't wait for her next book. OMG what a book this was. If an author can speak to me like this with only one book I'm hooked body, mind and soul. J. L. Davis has an intense, appealing, heartfelt writing that made me read this book non stop. Once I started it I couldn't put it down, but at the same time I didn't want it to end. Last tells the stories of Jessa and Alex. Jessa had the dream of having a handsome husband, a beautiful house, kids and an amazing job just like every little girl when they are growing up but now everything is forgotten. She's going through a tide of bad mojo. Not only had she lost her job but also her best friend and boyfriend in one day. It's been a struggle to get back on her feet so her last resource it to move back home and start over. But things aren't easy but she can't give up. On a job hunt her path crosses with the charming Alex Rogan. But what will she get from this? A job? A fresh start? A new lover? Alex hides is sadness and troubles very well. Despite having everything he feels empty and he's also a very reserved man. He doesn't think he's worth of his good fortune and because of that he doesn't believe in the compliments he's given. He hides so many secrets that continues to hunt him. Can he be open about his life? Can he trust Jessa with his heart? Dayum... Amazing book Loved everything about it from the plot to the characters. Loved the up and downs, the sexy scenes... The total package. It's so good to read a book and be able to witness the growth of the characters, the change in their feelings, in their heats. It's so good to change from a crime story to a love one. Beautiful story and I can't wait to read more from this author. Please J. L. Davis tell me that you write Brittany and Connor's story too... Pretty please...
Last by J.L. Davis was my First … LOL – Pun intended No seriously it was my first book by this author and somehow from what I found it might also be the debut novel of this author.
The author has an interesting and fresh writing style and the setting as well as the characters were well developed. Additionally the setting of the storyline was different and a little unusual.
I am not sure how much to tell without spoilers but at first it sounded like there was an immense age difference between both leads which confused the setting a little. As I said “at first” but later it made the complete interaction between the characters more spunky I think. Especially when it came to Jesse’s new friend that actually got her the job with Alex.
Jesse and Alex were interesting yet totally opposite characters. While Jesse at first sight looked insecure she was the one getting Alex out of his funk. And on the other hand Alex who should be the more settled one is actually more insecure than Jesse.
Adding the circumstances, their environment and past – well lets say the reader is in for an interesting ride. But it will be one I am sure that the readers will enjoy – I can honestly say that I enjoyed it. It was a read that was a little fresher than the average sweet romance. If the author can keep up this kind of writing style the future will tell but for now I can say that I would pick up the next book by this author if the blurb appeals to me.
Last is about a girl named Jessa who dropped out of high school and moved in with her boyfriend. Who then cheats her with her best friend, yes you read correctly. Best friend. To make it worse not only does she lose her piece of sh*t ex-best friend and ex-boyfriend. She loses her job. Best friend-less. Boyfriend-less. Job-less. She heads back home in hopes of finding of job and she finds way more than she bargained for.
I give this book five shiney yellow stars! It was a really fun and fast read that kept me interested page after page. I loved Alex and Jessa’s story. My heart ached for Alex and I just wanted to hug him. I felt that Alex and Jessa were meant to meet each other and bring each other up from the where they both had fallen down. The author did an fantastic job at making me fall in love with the characters and want more. I absolutely adored Brittany and Jessa’s friendship from the beginning. She was my favorite character, hands down! Everyone should have a Brittany in their life. Alex from the beginning was a mystery waiting to be solved. I had so many theories about Alex and I never expected what happened and how it all came together. Every scene with Alex and Jessa was hot, hot, and hot! Where can I find an Alex in my life?
All two hundred and twenty-four pages of this book came together so perfectly and beautifully. Everyone should read this book! I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.
The story of Alex and Jessa started a bit slow for me, but as I got to the mystery of what his past held it got better. Alex is hiding from Jessa and the town he lives in but in order to have and keep her he needs to bring her into his heart which means revealing the past he has been trying to run from. Jessa, has had her heart broken by the man she thought she loved, a man that was hiding something dark from her. But she got away, only to fall hard for Alex a man that is broken but incredibly loving. Alex and Jessa, together are strong and beautiful. The only thins that bothered me was that it was a wee bit fast their love connection. I mean yeah I love the insta love stories but this felt a bit strained for me. Now don't get me wrong the story is beautiful and I am happy to have read it. I just fell that it was missing something more. All in all it is a good read.
Last is about Jessa and Alex. Jessa is 21 years old. She dropped out of high school at 17 to live with her boyfriend, and four years later, she comes home early from work to find him having sex with her so-called best friend. Jessa immediately goes to her mom's to stay. She's also unemployed, since she had been working for her boyfriend's mom. While contemplating what to do with her life, Jessa watches he neighbor's cleaning lady go to their house, and gets the idea to start her own business cleaning houses. She creates some flyers and as she's going around town putting them up, she runs into her old high school friend, Brittany. Brittany tells Jessa she knows someone who could use her services.
Alex is Brittany's uncle, and does need the help. He lives alone in a large house (& is anti-social because of something that happened some years back) and due to his OCD compulsions, needs the house cleaned a lot. He texts Jessa and they work out a time for her to go over and check it out. From the moment they meet, there is an instant chemistry neither can deny. Alex hires Jessa and she also looks into getting her GED so she can do something else with her life. On a night out with Brittany, they run into Alex at a bar. Jessa and Alex end up dancing together and...well, it is a romance, but you'll have to read to find out.
I liked the premise of this story, but the execution needs work. The entire story was in Jessa's POV, but I would have enjoyed at least a few chapters in Alex's POV. Also, the meat of each plot line seemed rather thin and needed more development. This is the debut novel from this author, and I can see the potential there, but I was just not heppy with the overall book.
JL Davis is brand new to the romance world and she definitely made her mark with her debut novel, Last. Sexy. Sweet. Valuable. Unique. This book was all kinds of good in different and refreshing ways.
Last is a standalone novel that kept me interested and intrigued, cover to cover. Full of heart and second chances, Jessa and Alex will take you on a beautiful journey that shows fate gives us exactly what we needed all along and didn't even know it.
Jessa is down on her luck and moving back home. Cheating ex and betraying ex best friend in the wind, she's trying to pick up the pieces and figure our her life. Starting a new company isn't easy but when she gets her first client, she has no idea how her life will change.
Alex is broken, jaded... an enigma wrapped in mystery. He lives his life in solitude... until she knocks on his door and shakes up his world. She's the one he never saw coming.
Some things happen for a reason.
Get ready for a sweet, light and heartwarming read with splashes of angst and drama.... just enough to keep you hanging on to every word.
I have never really found reading to be so amazing that I couldn't stop much like I binge watching a full series off of Netflix lol. I know most on here are book lovers can not relate and soon I hope to be one of you. Anyways "Last" was an easy read (important because I need to easy escape when I have free time), it kept me involved in every encounter that Jess and Mr. Hotness had, and it was real.
I am from a small town where several women enter relationships early on and get lost in a young love that leaves you burned and stuck in community college once you take the blinders off. Of course not all have life and a new start breathed into them by a gorgeous dream man like Jess did lol. If you can just read it with out over analyzing or looking for metaphors that are not hidden in this book, the ride you take will feel real and the passion between the two main characters comes through to you.
In short...This is the kind of book anyone could pick up after a long tiring work day, reads easy and will keep you reading until the very end.
I cant wait for her next book and any recommendations of books similar to this one.
I found "Last" very easy to read. I liked the writing style and would read other stories by J.L. Davis to see if other plots appeal to me more. I found this particular plot a little disappointing as I wanted the main character to become more independent over the course of the book.
"Last" was slightly less predictable than most stories in this genre, but not necessarily in a good way. I expected the main character to have more personal growth throughout the story. The first chapter makes it seem like this could be a big turning point in her life, but I felt like some of her decisions later in the story weren't consistent with it being a turning point. Overall, I found it hard to identify with the main character. I would have made some different decisions.
I did appreciate that many of the characters had flaws.
Last was my first book I have read by author, JL Davis. This book was truly amazing. In Last, we the reader are introduced to Jessa and Alex. Both Jessa and Alex have suffered heartbreak of some kind and have trust issues. The author takes us on a journey where Jessa and Alex learn to love and trust again. Their journey together is so heartwarming and throughout the story I found myself cheering them on. Their chemistry and sexual attraction is off the charts. The trust and love that develops is so true to life it made my heart swoon. The true love that they find in the end is the kind that everyone wishes for. There are many sexual situations in this story but they play a crucial part to their journey to find true love. JL's writing is so good and her character development is spectacular. This book is a must read and I definitely recommend it. This is a 5 star read.
Jessa loses everything she holds dear in one afternoon, and ends up having to move back to her childhood home. A high school dropout she knows she will struggle to get a job so decides to set up her own business doing what she loves best!
Alex is a loner and a recluse, after a tragedy happened years ago he rarely leaves the house for fear of hearing people gossiping and pointing the finger. His niece, who is a childhood friend of Jessa's, tells him about her new business and gets him to ask her for an interview!
Alex and Jessa are drawn to each other immediately but both hold back, until one afternoon when they just can't help themselves. From the first kiss they are inseparably and despite the difficulties that are thrown at them they come through it all together!
J L Davis is a new author to me and I have to say that I really enjoyed this book and read it on one sitting.
I Voluntarily Reviewed an Avanced Reader Copy of this book!
This was a new author and for the most part did a great job. It had all the elements of a good love story with sexy and steamy moments. The character's were almost believable. I wanted more to the story for that Umph factor. However; the author still did a good job, better than I could have done. Jessa and Tylers history was a little lacking. If he had a heroine addiction, she would have noticed. Heroine is no joke and when under the influence of this drug, individuals are in a sleep, nodding off state. So to say that a little more research needs to be done is not farfetched. Alex was a little creepy to me. His history was almost not real. The OCD thing with being a hermit yet he still goes to job sites? Anyhow, all in all the author did do a good job and I wouldn't mind reading a future story of hers.
This is JL Davis debut novel but it won't be my last to read from this author!!😉 This was a sweet and short story but it was so beautifully written that I finish it in just a few hours. Jessa goes from hav8my the worse week of her life to the most wonderful encounter. After losing her job at a daycare she decides to start her own job cleaning houses. That's when she meets the sexy but damaged Alex Rogan. Jessa has to get through the walls that Alex has build around his emotions. While fighting against a jealous ex boyfriend, Jessa tries to help Alex get over his painful past. She will do anything to be his last!! 😍😍 A must read!!!❤
I absolutely loved this one. JL Davis did an amazing job with this storyline.. There is emotion in this one that you can definitely feel with these two characters. Alex and Jessa are both trying to get over a rough past. Jessa is trying to start over from a nasty relationship. Alex is trying to to heal from him past. Can they heal each other? Instant chemistry between these two. Loved it . I love the relationship Jessa has with Brittany also. Had me rolling with laughter at some points. Amazing well written enjoyable book. Highly recommend.
Everyone needs to read this book by this new author. It has all the feels, romance and sexy love scenes you could want and the story is great! I loved how it all came together from the prologue to the end tying in the title. If only real life could be like this story. This book is well worth a first, second and even a third look so go for it and read this fantastic story. You'll love the characters and you won't be disappointed!!!!
I hate to write this because it's a new author and their debut book...but I really disliked this book.
The story had a lot of potential and a interesting premise... but the writing was disjointed, under developed and lacked depth and maturity. The poorly constructed sentences and interesting word choices kept distracting me, and I finally gave up on reading it after the first 2 chapters.
Found a new author that is just awesome from the get go! JL Davis is spot on with her writing and execution of the plot and characters. With a heartfelt story of Jessa and going threw a hard point in her life. Deciding to start her own cleaning business, that’s when she meets Alex. And the fun begins, lol. These two together kept my attention, I couldn’t put it down til the end. With a likeable female lead and strong sexy Alex, you really can’t go wrong.
I love reading new books from new authors. It's like you can say that you've been with them since the beginning. This book is amazing, it has a little bit of everything. The heartbreak, the emotional roller coaster, the happy ending. I would definitely recommend this read. It is the first one I've read but it won't be my last.
Last is a fun romance about Jessa, who comes home to find her boyfriend of four years in bed with her best friend. What I liked best about Last is the main character, Jessa. I like that Jessa is a strong female that tries to better for herself once her life gets thrown for a loop instead of completely falling apart over her circumstances.
This is an amazing book! I just could not put it down. Such great writing style that brings you into the story so much that you actually feel like you are a part of the story. I fell in love with the characters while reading this. A lot of books are pretty predictable, but this one held some surprises that made it that much better. Cannot wait to read more of her work.
What an amazing story kept me hooked till the end. It shows how life can suck at times but can all work out in the end. Alex and Jessa show how overcoming a rough past can work out and that love can triumph all disasters overall.
