We all know there are simple things we could and should be doing on a daily basis to help us live better lives. We should drink more water, eat better, get lots of sleep and exercise. Right?! But easier said than done! After trying a series of 30 day challenges to varying degrees of success Julie van Amerongen found her tribe in an amazing community of runners known as streakers (no, not the ones who take their clothes off !) who run every.single.day without fail, and became hooked. Getting out the door every day is challenging for anyone, yet somehow she managed to squeeze running in no matter where life took her - to multiple states and countries, in snow and on sand, while hungry, full, drunk, hungover and well...everywhere. In the book she tells you how and why she has kept on running every day and how you (yes, you!) can too.
The one thing reading this book did was inspire me to start running every day. The writing though, was similar to reading someone's daily journal - more personal to the author and her own experience. I read this as part of a themed reading challenge about sports at the library.
This is a great example of a book that needs the right audience. It's best for beginning runners who are considering but haven't done a running streak (where you decide to run X amount of days in a row, at least one mile).
It was too basic for me, since I've been running for over 20 years and have done more than one streak (not a full year like her though! Kudos to her). Her "tips" were stuff I'd figured out ages ago (stuff your wet shoes with newspapers to dry them out! Run in the morning to ensure you'll get it done!, etc.).
But I still enjoyed it, ultimately, since I'm a total sucker for running books. Her chipper personality mildly irritated me at first, but then grew on me. Who am I?
There is some good wisdom in here about how you can do things you think there's no way you can do, and if you can do this with running, then what else is out there for you....
Fewer exclamation points would've been great, though.
Every.Single.Day: Unstoppable Wisdom from a Year of Running by Julie Van Amerongen for me is a five star read
The honesty of her emotions and state of mind and body throughout the book are what makes this such a fantastic read. The descriptions of the emotions she feels are particularly moving and inspiring. This rawness is balanced out with the energy and enthusiasm that shines through with this author.
Definitely an inspiring read that will make you want to take off for the longest run of your life!
This book was extremely well written and I devoured it in one sitting. Incredible work!! I absolutely adored reading this book!
I will definitely be recommending Every.Single.Day to everyone I know.
After the loss of a dear friend, Van Amerongen decides to tackle a year of different 30 day challenges. One of the challenges was to run a mile every day for 30 days. At the end of the month, she kept on running. This book is the log of her runs, her insights, and her pro tips gathered over one year of daily running. At first, I thought it was going to be boring reading her training log. Not at all. Her entries are peppered with humor, with creativity, and reality. I never understood run streakers, but this book gave me some good insight into those who feel the need to run every.single.day. http://www.takinglongwayhome.com/2017...
I enjoyed this book. I found the entries to be about the right length and she didn’t seem to have the need to write for the sake of an entry. Like her streak saving miles, some entries were just that. Liked seeing how much she learned about herself as she finished this quest, and how running was such a family affair. Enjoyed her entry into trail running toward the end, and how she was able to maintain over a busy work schedule. Good, light read
