In the book, "Rules" by Cynthia Lord the story of living life with a brother named David who has autism is told through his sister point of view. David's sister, Catherine, oftentimes finds herself embarrassed by David's abnormal actions & outburst. Throughout the story, Catherine develops a greater appreciation for her brother and individuals with disabilities through the friendships she makes.

Overall, I feel like this is a very eyeopening book that would be beneficial for students in grades 3-5 to read. The book provides insight into what daily life is like for a family who deals with autism. I feel that students do not fully understand the impact of students with autism or what the siblings of those students may be dealing with. This book could be used in a classroom to help students grow within social-emotional learning by teaching them to be more accepting to students who may be different than them.

Read RULES to discuss with my eleven year old granddaughter who was assigned Cynthia Lords’ award winning novel. Lord’s treatment of a family raising a special needs child and the impact on siblings and parents alike is written at a level of humanity worthy of great literature. Rules informs us by illustrating how members of the family unit are challenged to cope with their own feelings and needs while “taking care” of an autistic son. Friends and others in the Special Needs Community are beautifully drawn into the narrative and offer depth and nuance to how people cope with the presence of and reality for a person who may be different from the rest of us and no less human.

It was a really good book, I really like it and if probably was one of my favorites this year. But I wish it was a little longer so that it could have a better ending because it ended on a cliffhanger and I just have so many questions. So I hope there is a part 2 of this book.

My favorite part of this book is when Ramen wishes for a grape soda.
