John Muir said, "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." So is the case for each walk-inspired essay from Katherine Hauswirth. Each reflection hands you talismans that you can turn over thoughtfully in your palm. Hauswirth's meditative reveries reflect on the deep connections between what we experience outdoors and our day-to-day existence as humans, peppered with thought-provoking facts as well as treasured words from other lovers of the natural world. This book won honorable mention for general nonfiction in the 2018 American Society of Journalists and Authors Contest.
Had the pleasure of meeting this author at a Book Talk. I enjoyed her presentation and humor. And immediately bought her book. I've never read a book like this before and I really enjoyed it. The author takes you on her walks and shows you the things she notices in nature and the questions that rise to mind. She teaches a bit about nature without being too scientific. Her poetic descriptions just made me want to get out for more wet, rainy walks. I recommend this book and look forward to picking up other nature authors who she liberally quotes in her book. It was a nice escape.
If you like the outdoors this book is for you and will bring a smile to your face. A well written book that encourages you to take the time get outdoors and explore more. I especially enjoyed Katherine’s book as we reside in the same town and related to most of the locations referenced in her book. She definitely “found the way to noticing and then noticing some more.”
Excellent! I have become much more appreciative of my surroundings on my morning walks after reading this book. I read a little at a time, so not to rush through it, just like this book has taught me not to rush through my walks!
This is a lovely travelogue of seasonal outdoor traipsing that immerses the reader in every outing. From the swampy squishes of spring through the buzzing summer fields into the rustle and musk of fall and the winter snow filled with clues. This is a romance of nature that beckons you to pay attention to the world right outside your door.
