Where do I start? This story touched me on so many levels, I didn't like Brian from the start as as we get further along.. yeah he is something else for sure. Lucas and Armel care so deeply for Kat in their own ways and never try to down play it. What Armel gave up for his tribe and family was so selfless and I was brought to tears multiple times throughout the story for what he went through as his actions. There was a point where I was a bit irritated with Lucas but that passed fairly quickly, he truly is a good man. This story is absolutely relatable in terms of believing that there is more to life and this could be a take on how things work. Beautifully written and heart touching from beginning to the very last sentence.

We often think of death, and what awaits for us on the other side. Some of us, in the "believers" category, would even venture to say there is wonder, and love, and light, so pure and dazzling in Heaven; and perhaps fiery and anguish in the depths of Hell. We don't know what awaits for us. We just know that death is certain. Life should be treasured and lived, because we are never guaranteed our next breath.

As a doctor, Kathryn knows full well about dealing with the precariousness and preciousness of life. She tries to patch our bodies up as best as she can, hoping and praying with us that we can make it to another year, another milestone that we feel we must cross.......but in the end, our paths won't waver. We may be granted another chance, but it's still there. Death looms over us, watching, waiting and I'm sure, very bored with our bargaining and pleading with a thing that is certain.

And then there's Armel, Death's servant. He is neither here nor there, but serves as a guide to help us get from this side through whatever awaits for us on the other side.

This book felt like a buildup of something grand, and it didn't disappoint as it climaxed to the finish. There is certainly wreckage, and disbelief. Mass confusion and heartbreak. I'm not sure how I can cover all of it in one swoop. But, trust that there is something deeper within these pages that isn't just about a doctor and an quasi-angel of death, or how she escapes from one cheating and wayward heart, and runs into the solid and steady heartbeat of her soulmate. I cried over some parts, especially regarding the relationship of a mother and a daughter. It could be that I am emotional from having to enroll my first child in Kindergarten this week, and seeing that at some point I need to let go of her. I do hope, and pray to have the same crazy relationship with my daughter as we both age as I love the dynamic between Kathryn and her mom, Claire. Those are my hashtag mother/daughter goals.

No, in between a lover's meeting, and hugging it out with mom, Gloria Herrmann takes us on a beautiful walk with Armel, as he 'collects souls.' As scary as that is to lose someone we love, I can only imagine how scared and lonely it will feel when we realize our time on Earth is up. I'm sure it's comforting to imagine that someone that used to be one of us, a man who knew life and death, love and grief; someone who has seen it all through the ages. To have a friend, and not an angel who can't imagine why we cling to life so much when there's so much more waiting for us on the other side.......why we have to bargain so loudly to hang onto all of this much life here.... no, it's easier and comforting for us to imagine a friend will be the one to help us go through this door into the afterlife.

Thank you, Gloria, for taking me on a walk deep in the forest, and reminding me for a moment that life is simple - we live, we love, we die but we just complicate things because that's what we do. But in the end, it won't matter who we were in life, because we all have to go through The Pass Through.

*** sidenote: this is most definitely not a Christian or a clean book, as there is sex in here. But I love the idea that there exists angels and spirits among us. Call it the Catholic in me and the belief in purgatory. Or my Filipino blood that had to read this only during the daytime, because we're a very superstitious bunch, and something about the supernatural gives me the heebee jeeves if read in the dark. Whatever you want to call it, I chose to read this story because I found the blurb intriguing and the idea of Armel, and his goodness, and his sacrifice is haunting; and his interactions with angels, only add more questions to what we don't know. This was a neat take on what we don't know about death, angels, souls, or what the Great Taker (Death), or the Creator (God) looks like. So if you want to read a lovely novel about all of this, pick up this book. If you are disheartened that I choose to read something that wasn't a Christian novel......I hope and pray that it takes more than a novel to sway your beliefs. This was a great read for me.***

Wow what an amazing story. This is nothing like Gloria Herrmann has written before, its slightly darker amd nothing like a romance series. This is a fantastic one of read of a beautiful doctor Kat and sheriff Lucas. We meet darker characters that we can love and hate. Don't won't to give to much away but this is a must read book, read it now and find out all about The Pass Through.

This was a suprizingly different type of story for Gloria to have written and I absolutely loved it to pieces.

I adore anything to do with the supernatural or the spirit world and this brought it to the characters in an unexpected way.

And that Sherriff oye vey. If there was a fanning acting to describe my attraction to that character i would so do it.

I just love that this author showed so much range in going from roamnces to this sexy spiritual thriller.

Gloria Herrmann is a new author to me. The Pass Through was a free download and seemed like it took forever to get to read. Once I started the story, it was deep, no matter what you were raised to believe somethings like angles, guides, and higher beings are bound to be questioned.

I've never read a book by Gloria before and my first reaction to this story is WOW! It's the sort of book that leaves you wondering. It questions important things like life and death, how we should always live life to its fullest. I loved the grandmother/mother/daughter take on the story.
Beautifully written! Five stars!

What would it be like to see death? What would it be like to give your eternal life to save your family? Armel does just that only to spend life helping others through The Pass Through. Although no one but the dying can see him by fate one night someone does. That someone is Dr Kathryn Bailey. Not only can she see him but she speaks with him. What transpires is a truly poignant story of loss and love. This is a must read!

This was a wonderful beautiful story. I was so taken by every aspect of this amazing book. The different things that Ms Herrmann touched on from the spiritual to the paranormal. This book will make you slow down and think . Will open your eyes to the world around you. This was one of the most beautiful books I've read. Thank you.

WOW!
This kind of story is not my usual 'go to' read but, I'm bloody glad I downloaded it.

Firstly, it is so beautifully written. Secondly, the feels through most of this book are so real.

Some of the characters you hate to love and love to hate - especially Brian, and Lucas. But overall, the Author brings out that emotion so eloquently. And I LOVE that.

The story brings to life the thoughts of an afterlife that most people want to believe exists. That, yes, maybe there's some kind of guardian angel for each of us, helping us and being there when it's needed.
A friend of mine recently passed. so I'll admit the eyes filled with tears at parts that made me think of 'the pass through' and hoped that she had that wonderful place/people, in the afterlife.

All in all this book is everything you want in a read that, like I said above, is not your usual read.

Recommended!

What an amazing story! A favorite of 2017!

The Pass Through is the first book of Gloria Herrmann's that I have read and I am blown away by both her imagination and captivating writing style.

This is a beautifully written story told in dual pov of both Kathryn and Armel.

Kathryn is a doctor from California who decides that a road trip with her mother is just what she needs to heal her recently broken heart.
Armel traded his soul to the Great taker and now roams the earth guiding souls to The Pass Through.

The story and the characters are well developed and brilliantly brought together through Kathryn's journey. The Pass Through had me feeling so many emotions while reading. It truly makes you appreciate the gift of life, the promise of the afterlife and the family and friends you share it with .

What a great book.
I'm so glad I didn't miss this one.
Strong characters, mother-daughter dynamics, steamy-sweet Romance and an intriguing plot.
My curiousity into this topic has been with me for many years and this book was food for thought. I know this story will stay with me for a very long time. It was a book with everything.
This author will be on my radar.

Gloria Herrmann hits deep in this story that deals with the human heart on a natural and supernatural level. Introduced to Armel early on he dedicates his service to a dark angel The Great Taker in order to spare the life of his family. It is a decision he at some points regrets as we are introduced to the idea of the Pass Through and this particular vision of what lays beyond our human sight of the universe.

Kathryn is attempting to move on from a toxic relationship in her life, and a rode trip with mom to grandma’s seems like a great remedy, especially with the introduction of Lucas an alpha personality who quickly takes a shine to Kathryn.

Our two protagonists cross paths for reasons that are not immediately known, but the emotional connection this reader developed with Armel and Kathryn, whose experience and beliefs are questioned by Lucas, held fast right to an ending that did require a tissue (or two, maybe) for this reader.

I'm quite sad that I can't give this book a better rating than two stars but I really did not enjoy it at all.
First of all, I did like Armel he is a great character and I liked everything about him. He is really elaborated and interesting and I enjoyed reading his chapters a lot!
The rest of the book, on the other hand, was really not my cup of tea. The relationship between Kathryn and Lucas seemed to me absolute ridiculous and both acted as if they were still teenagers.
Kathryn is going through a hard breakup and her mother thinks that a road trip would take her mind off things. So far the story seemed nice but as soon as they reach their destination, which is her grandmother's place, the two women try to set Kathryn up with the local chief Lucas. As if a woman could not be happy without a man in her life! (Sidenote: Her father and grandfather are dead for a really long time and you never hear that any of the women had ever had another relationship ever since) It makes absolutely no sense to me why the two of them try to force her into a relationship with another man already although she clearly says she doesn't want to.
Lucas might be described as a nice guy but in my opinion, he is acting really selfish and forces himself so hard on her. But Kathryn never stands up for herself and defends all their actions all the time. That was what annoyed me the most!
Lucas and she get close in no time and not even after a week everyone tries to convince her to move up into absolute solitude. She makes so often clear that she really likes her job as a doctor in California and that she had spent her whole life there and now she shall leave this all behind for some guy she knows for barely a week?! Like honestly what is wrong with all of them?! And Lucas gets actually mad at her for leaving after they knew each other for like two weeks?!
They weren't even a real couple but everyone was already acting as if they were and talking about how he was the one for her. I mean her grandmother at least knew this guy her whole life but her mother had known him just as long as Kathryn so what mother acts like that? And Kathryn is supposed to be a professional and great doctor but still jumps on his motorbike and rides off with him and has sex without protection? Who is that thoughtless? And of course, she moves up with her mother in the end and she and Lucas get engaged and she is pregnant after a whole time period of maybe two months?!
If the love story between the two wouldn't have been so rushed and could have developed over time it would have made a good change for me and I might have liked the story a lot more. I also must admit that I did not know until halfway through the book what role actually Armel plays in it and I found the clash of this quite typical romance with the supernatural fantasy part not well-implemented. I think the story had a lot potential, especially the part with Armel as I really enjoyed every bit of his story and the part he took up in the book.

Holy Toledos ! This book is not what I expected out of Gloria Herrmann at all. What a throughly Fantastic Read. Not her typical romance story which I throughly love as well. The Heart wrenching love between lovers and friends is incredible. I always believed there was another life another realm out there. Can there truly be life after death? The characters are a love hate situation. You need to judge them for yourself. Lucas and Armel’s true love for Kathryn both in a different way and Armel and Virgil’s friendship. The strength is incredible. Gloria takes you on a truly emotional rollercoaster ride right from beginning to the riveting end. If you believe in true love, life after death guardian angels then this is the read for you, but I let you judge for yourselves. This was without a doubt a five star read for me.

a new take on Urban Fantasy

Katherine is a doctor. Armed is a servant to the angel of Death. When their paths cross they both find what they are searching for in life.

There aren’t enough stories out there that explore the relationship death has with humanity in a way that’s not strictly on the spiritual level. This book explores the constant battle between doctors and death, love, and after lives. It talks about how far a person is willing to go in order to secure their family’s health and future.

If there was ever a modern book that perfectly describes the human existence, this is that book.

Wow. This book was absolutely captivating. Kat is an amazing woman, and someone I'd love to call a friend IRL. Brian will absolutely make his skin crawl, especially if you've ever met someone like him before. Kat's mom just has an amazing vibe, and I loved her from the moment we first really meet her. The opening of the story really captures your attention, with vivid descriptions, enveloping you and drawing you in, then before you know it, you're chapters deep. I don't want to give any spoilers, but this isn't your typical PNR, and I loved every moment of it!

The Pass Through
By: Gloria Herrmann

I've read all of Glorias books, and love them. However, I couldn't wait for this one to come out. A totally different story line and writing style for the author--and she doesn't disappoint. The characters are well built and you immediately find yourself connecting with Kathryn, the main character, after her long time boy friend cheats on her...again.

The book tells of a beautiful bond between mother and daughter. It also talks about second chances, love and a little bit of the supernatural. Even though Gloria is best known for her sweet romances, you might want to hold on tight, because there are a few HOT scenes in this book!

Although I'm sure most would talk about falling in love with the sexy sheriff--it was Armel I fell in love with. Kind and compassionate. I longed to read more about him, and would LOVE to see a prequel on his life.

I give this book 5 <3 <3 <3 <3

Gloria Herrmann never stops to surprise me. I don’t know why she was so worried about this book, because The Pass Through is an amazing book.
Slightly different from her usual sweet romance, The Pass Through is beautifully written and so far this year one of the best book I’ve read.

Why do you have to read this book? Because is an emotional rollercoaster, because it makes you wondering about those eternal questions of life: Is there an afterlife? Is there an Heaven? Do Angels exist? Is there a supernatural power ruling life and death? Do I believe or not?

This book is the story of Kathryn torn between two men, Lucas and Armel, that are the symbols of real and supernatural.

Armel has traded his soul to the Angel of Death, to the Great Taker, to save his family and tribe, and now he’s eternally forced to take dead souls to The Pass Through.

Lucas is a cop living a very real life and not such a believer, he believes only in what he sees.

Kathryn is a doctor, living a very real life, but she’s the only one who can see Armel. Why?
What is the Great Scheme behind all of this?

I have my personal answer to those questions: LOVE. Love makes Kathryn believe in something greater and supernatural. Love makes Armel believe that his soul he’s not forever lost. Love makes Lucas to trust without conditions.

And around that triangle there is the story of a mother and daughter: Kathryn, Kathryn’s mother and grandmother.

The storyline is engaging and inspiring, and talks about Faith, family bond, Love, Life and Death, and second chances. It’s a journey that takes the reader from Earth to Heaven.
As usual Gloria Herrmann has the magic touch to describe the characters and the surrounding in such a vivid and real way that this book can be perfect for a screenplay.

It’s hard to write a review after reading a book like this that has given me so many emotion. Everything I would write, it won’t give justice to it. I think that the best way to appreciate The Pass Through is to read it!

Overcoming hardship and gaining strength from the spiritual realm

I really enjoyed reading this book. I started reading it several months ago, and just got around to finishing it today. Kathryn escapes a bad relationship to discover her fate awaits her in her brand's hometown.

Get ready for an interesting story that ties the idea of fate finding is wherever we are, both in romance and assisting another in achieving their own happy ending. This tale combines the lightness of a chick lit novel with the seriousness and paranormal edge of a ghost story.
