A favor led him to servitude... Servitude led him to love...
Lewis Haywood is the Marquess of Lamont, but one would never know by looking at him. During the last two years of service to the Duke of Wardington, he has become as jaded as one who was born on the roughest streets of London.
With two years down and only three to go, Lewis is looking forward to freedom and won't let anything distract him during his latest assignment.
But as fate would have it, distraction comes in the form of a young boy whose lavender eyes are more than familiar.
Lewis has a son he never knew existed!
And there's only one woman to blame...
Lady Phoebe Gillard fled England eight years ago with a broken heart and with a child the father never wanted. When Lewis finds out about their son, everything changes ...
Phoebe finds herself falling for the very man she vowed to never love again. But when the flames of love are rekindled, both turn to face their last and biggest change.
The Duke of Wardington. He knows all and see all. He won't let Lewis go without a fight. He demands all debts to paid.
And when the time comes, Phoebe and Lewis might find themselves paying for that freedom with blood... or at the cost of their love.
How high of a price is this couple willing to pay to be together? And can anyone truly be free of the Duke of Wardington?
How To Make A Marquess, is the first story I have read by Eleanor Meyers. Some of the storyline was a bit hard to believe for the era and genre the story is written in.
Lewis Haywood Marques of Lamont is in servitude to the Duke of Wardington for a period of 5 years. What the Heck!!! Lewis is a very rich and poerful Marques, but he is nothing but a slave to this controlling powerful Duke. He does very dangerous missions for the Duke. Now he is being sent to Deliver Wedding Invitations for the Dukes upcoming wedding. What a Joke!!Oh Please!! this is just ridiculous!! He is imprisoned in France after trying to deliver one of the invitations to Sir John Blackhart. The man he is delivering the invitation too is the man who imprisoned him. Then after 11 days decides to let him go after Lewis refuses to tell him who sent him. This part of the story is absurd. Lewis is beaten and starved he is at the point of laughing and crying. Lewis cries a lot in this story. Not very Alpha.
Lady Phoebe Gillard was once Lewis's lover. Now 8 years have passed and she has a 7 year old son. Lewis is out shopping in France and runs smack into a son. He did not know existed. He puts two and two together and figures out Phoebe lied to him. He had told her to get rid of the baby she was carrying. Ok Lady Phoebe is the daughter of the late Earl of Daggen and her brother is now the Earl so at 18 or 19 years of age how would she even know how to begin to get an abortion??? This is the year 1808 Not 1970 this is just Ridiculous and unbelievable. Lewis's young sister Jane gets pregnant too and she is very young and daughter of a deceased Marquis and her brother Lewis is now the Marquis of Lamont. She gets rid of her baby. How would she know what or how to do this. Young ladies of Quality Aristocrats just wouldn't know what to do if they got pregnant or where to go to get rid of there babies. Now poor Jane can't carry a child to term. She miscarries.
What saved the story for me a little bit was Lewis getting to know and developing a relationship with his son Pascal/Pax who looks just like him. He and Phoebe are married. Which appears to have taken place 8 years past to make Pax his legal heir. This part of the story was good. But that's it. This is a very clean romance barley any kissing and no sex at all. Sex is Implied I like at least some sexual contact between H/H this story is a bit to Clean for My Taste!! No I Will Not be reading anymore of Ms. Meyers books. Sorry!!
I love the books in this series. They can be read as a series but also as standalone. We were introduced to the characters in other books and they get developed in their own books. This is Phoebe and Lewis's story. Intriguing, sweet romance.
I liked this book. Lewis Haywood, a marquess, told Phoebe to get rid of their unborn baby seven years ago. Since that time, he has made another engagement and broken it. To be able to do that, he indentured himself to a Wardington for several years, not caring what would happen to him and feeling remorseful about what he last said to Phoebe. After seven years and many dangerous missions completed for Wardington, Lewis meets a boy in the candy shop he goes to - - and realizes soon after he is his son. Lewis also realizes he never stopped loving Phoebe and wants her as a wife. Can remorse and love spell a happy ending, or will Wardington's evil machinations keep them apart forever? If you like suspense and romance entwined, this is the book for you.
I would like to say there were several things that bothered me. The 4 to 5 pages between chapters with nothing but fancy symbols. Was it just to add to the page count? Also, the inconsistency in the use of names. At first I struggled to figure out who was who. A formal name was used, then their personal name. But without consistency in the usage. The last of the book was not proof read very well.
That being said, it was a great story and I enjoyed it. Ms Meyers has great talent. The characters were well developed and you could picture each one. The story line was well thought out and kept my interest! It could have been a bit longer.
Another great Wardington Park story. After seven years Lewis and Phoebe are fated to be reunited when Lewis unexpectedly runs into his seven old son and then comes the rollercoaster ride as Lewis realizes he has a son after telling Phoebe seven years ago to get rid of the baby. Lewis has matured since then and is thrilled to be a father. Now he just needs to get Phoebe to agree to marry him., plus he is still indebted to the Duke of Wardington. What a great read. I loved it.
The love story of Lewis and Phoebe. Lewis and Phoebe knew each other eight year ago, she had his son and did not tell him. On a job for Duke Warrington he meet her and his son. Has working for Warrington change him or will he run from his son? Great story.
I love Eleanor Meyers books. I enjoy reading everything she writes. I have read her other series. Now I am on Tots of the ton. She keeps me captive O just want to devour her books.
This book was truly AMAZING. I liked how Ms. Meyers put in almost all her other Wardington stories in this one and I do so love how many are in his debt.
The story of Lewis and Phoebe is heartwarming. The stories are always developing on different levels. The characters are always good as is the plot. A very good read.
This is a spin-off from 'The Skills of A Scoundrel' (TSOaS). So it's better to read that one first before you read this book.
The story about Lord Haywood and Lady Phoebe Gillard. He was a Viscount of Lamont in TSOaS but not quite sure why he is now a Marquess. Even though this book #8 I think this book can be read right after book 4.
I like Ms. Meyers works however too many stories within a story. I prefer my book focus on one female and male protagonist than several in one book. It could be a 4.5 star book but just too many characters and stories in one book.

I liked this book, though I thought it was a little shorter than the others in the series. It is clean and entertaining. The last two books in this series were on the boarder line of unclean. I'm glad the author moved away from the line. Clean books are always more entertaining. I liked how the reader can see Lewis mature over the series and it's good he has his own story. There is kind of a big mistake in this book. Lewis is a Viscount, not a Marquess. This is the only book that names him a Marquess. All the others, and the family lists before each book, have him as a Viscount. I choose to overlook this mistake and not dwell on it simply because the books are entertaining. If you notice it, I hope you do too. I'm looking forward to more books from the author. I recommend this book to anyone who likes regency novels.
I loved everything about this book! Although it is the continuation of an ongoing series, it can be read as a stand alone. It is so much more fun to know the characters and learn how much of a mastermind the Duke of Wardington is. He is a fixer, but it always comes with a price. Lewis, who has broken many hearts, owes the Duke five years of service for breaking an unwanted engagement. Little did he know that one such relationship produced a son. Phoebe was determined to keep her son and raise him with the help of her brother. Years have passed and both Phoebe and Lewis have changed. A chance meeting rekindles something both thought long ago lost. One can't help but adore Phoebe and root for Lewis to rewin her heart. While this is their story, the secondary characters are interesting and add sparkle to the book. I encourage you to read this book, then go back to beginning of the series. It is a journey with taking!
I enjoy reading books by Eleanor Meyers. I think this book is one my favorites. Lewis and Phoebe had a past that resulted in giving birth to a son. There are a lot of things going on in this book! I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys reading a great story.
I love the characters in this historical Regency romance, Lewis Haywood is the Marquess of Lamont, but one would never know by His appearance. Because of having asked Duke of Wardington a favor, he is in servitude to the Duke for five years. He has served two years and has become as one who was born on the roughest streets of London. On his latest assignment, he meets a young boy whose lavender eyes are more than familiar. Could it be that he has a son he never knew existed? Lady Phoebe Gillard fled England eight years ago with a broken heart and with a child the father never wanted. When Lewis finds out about their son, Phoebe finds herself falling for the very man she vowed to never love again. When the flames of love are rekindled, both face change. Their last and biggest change is the Duke of Wardington. He won't let Lewis go without a fight. He demands all debts to paid to the fullest. How high of a price are they willing to pay to be together and free of the Duke of Wardington? Can they and will they ever really be free from him?

I enjoyed this story very much. This book is about Lewis and Phoebe, and I thought the little boy was just precious. We were introduced to them in earlier books. However, this book can be read as a stand alone. I really enjoyed the mystery and the spy thing they both had going on. I hope that continues into other books. The Regency Era is a favorite of mine and I enjoy reading this era of historical fiction.
I absolutely love reading about these families! And the story of Lewis finding his family is too good to pass up! Exciting plot, great characters, and the way they all intercept is magic! Don't miss out on this one, you will regret it! Does Wardington know everything? Just asking!
Lewis not so much. I have been reading this series from the beginning. And every one of them I have enjoyed! This one made me realize that the author it's just so good you don't blame her you blame the character! If you don't like the character!! New characters are introduced . And she has second characters that are doing their own story, Eleanor Meyers is one of my favorite! Can't wait for the next book!
Good clean book can be read as stand alone or fits the series well. Wardington is still controlling but may be changing some since he is getting married again in a future book. Always love Eleanor's books
