As an author and editor, I seldom have time to indulge in my favorite pastime -- reading, so when I do finally get a bit of time to pick up a read, I want it to be good. "Mildred In Disguise: With Diamonds" did not disappoint. In fact, I couldn't put it down.
I fell in love with Mildred, and actually saw some of myself in her. This is the mark of a good author. When a character is so well developed that you begin to identify with them, the author has done their job.
I usually can figure out a detective story by mid-book easily. This one kept me wondering to the end. The added benefit is that, Mildred is so engaging, that I found myself laughing out loud at times.
I'm so glad that I read this book! Time spent well indeed!
I'm a little surprised that this book got such a high over-all rating. I was looking forward to it - the blurb describes and interesting setup. I'm always up for stories involving feisty older women making it through hardships and solving crimes. And this book has all that. Unfortunately I found the writing so distracting and off-putting that I couldn't finish it.
The police and security people are uniformly unprofessional and nearly inept. The dialog is so cheesy I honestly thought I'd picked up a YA book (and I do sometimes read YA books - they can be fun when well-written). The witty repartee was, at times, cringe-worthy. Some of the problems could have been fixed with rather simple editing (run-on sentences, continuity errors, missing words, typos etc). But some were more systemic. Too bad - I would have liked to find a fun series to get into.
I received this novel from the author in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. No money changed hands, no promises of chocolate or payment for services were rendered.
So, what can you say about a feisty woman on the early side of seventy who has bills to pay and no way to pay them? Call her Mildred--AKA G-ma--AKA -Delilah, Bambi, and other aliases. This is one lady who takes crap from no one, who outsmarts the opposition time and again and still finds time to raid the buffet table at the casino where she works undercover.
Widowed at seventy-one and broke due to her late husband's gambling debts, Mildred applies for a job at the Ivory Winds Casino. As she was once a cop, her background gets her hired as undercover security.
In disguise, Mildred—G-ma—makes her rounds at Ivory Winds. Is she Delilah Hopper, Oliver Brimstone, or Bambi Hunter, while taking advantage of the free buffet.
Going by another code name--Double-oh-Seventy-One--you'll chuckle as Mildred faces mysteries, crimes, suspense and danger. Your mouth will also probably water at all the tasty treats that get served up.
I enjoyed it enough to round it up to a five, although the PDF copy I received could have benefited from some slightly tighter editing as well as separation of paragraphs. That minor complaint--which really ain't a complaint--aside, this is one funny book.
A 71 year old woman and her husband sell their home and move to a retirement community. The husband explaining that the money they made on the sale of their house will be what they will live on. Her husband commits suicide leaves the wife penniless. He gambled it all away at the nearby casino. The distraught wife takes a job at the casino as its close to the apt and she’s not a gambler. She starts off as a cashier but soon moves up to plain clothes based on her previous experience in the police department as a meter maid. A robbery ensues and our 71 yr old is put on the team to figure out what happened. I liked the idea of an older protagonist but I never got into the story and found the characters dull.
Toni Kief is defining the Older Adult genre. Mildred is older, but far from done. She uses her wisdom, her well-honed detective skills, and her undefeatable sense of humor to help expose the dangers of gambling. She trades a life of quiet retirement for the excitement of undercover detective work and put herself in harms' way to catch the bad guys. Even while working disguised, she remains true to herself.
Mildred in Disguise is a quick, well-written, fun read. Mildred is an inspiration for people to abandon their rocking chairs and use their talents to take on the world. It leaves you wanting to hear what her next adventure will be.
Delicious read. Doesn't get much wittier than this series. Example: Mildred is under the weather and she is "feeling like the third chapter of a dreadful book." Perhaps it's because the protagonist is 71, or the mystery is set in casino and well-researched. This author knows seniors and has written a book not just for those of us north of 60, but for anyone who loves a good mystery. I read it in one day and promptly put the other two on my Kindle for today and tomorrow. It is a laugh out loud funny, wipe tears of laughter from your eyes, escape book.
Cheers to Toni Kief for introducing us to Mildred, a pragmatic, interesting, and creative character that readers will easily take to their hearts. This unique and well-written story was a delightful read.
This is the second book I've read by this author. As with the first, her main character is a rather feisty woman of advanced years and I found myself chuckling more than once at Mildred's obsession with having her meals on time.
Having to find employment after the death of her husband leaves her in unexpected financial hardship, Mildred winds up in the unlikely role of undercover security at the local casino. Quickly finding her feet, she soon relishes the excitement and independence her new position brings, enjoying the camaraderie of her new colleagues. However, danger is lurking just around the corner for Mildred and from then on it's all breakneck action and tension.
I really enjoyed this book, mostly for the character of Mildred who is endearing and very relatable, but also for the casino itself. Appearing almost like a mini world of its own, it was fascinating to read all the behind the scenes info.
The author writes well, with crisp attention to detail that breathes life into all her characters. She is economical with her words and doesn't waste time with lavish descriptions that would slow the plot down.
There was so much I liked about this book and only one small niggle which did bother me somewhat. The author has a habit of changing the point of view from first to third person mid-paragraph, and that did make it a bit confusing. However, this is just a personal observation, and in no way detracts from the solid five stars I am awarding it. I will definitely be reading some more Mildred in the future.
This book made me sad. It's the story of a woman who is post retirement but her husband's sudden death and subsequent uncovering of terrible gambling debts has her returning to work.
Mildred was a meter maid; parking enforcement, back in the day and now she's an uncover detective at her local casino. She thinks it will mostly be purse snatching and shop lifting but it turns into much more....
Mildred is angry, rightfully in my opinion, that her husband gambled away their life savings, he was a compulsive gambler. And she's dealing with the fall out of his death in her family; one of her sons has stopped speaking to her blaming her for his father's death
Mildred is a resilient character who is not going to let the bastards keep her down. But OMG everything else is so depressing, the addicted gamblers, the alcoholics, the doctor from Africa who works as a cleaning lady, the sad people who populate the casino.
This book is highly entertaining. Mildred has spunk and sass...and lots of energy. Her disguises are a hoot! There's never a dull moment with this old gal. A great read!
I am so happy to have met Mildred. This feisty woman, and author Toni Kief, kept me laughing and on the edge of my seat for the entire book. Filled with nostalgia, warmth, and apple turnovers, Mildred in Disguise reaches out and pulls you into the story. In fact, I don’t want to leave. So I’m starting Mildred Romancing the Odds, immediately.
I believe that I was enticed to read MILDRED IN DISGUISE WITH DIAMONDS, authored by Toni Kief, by a friend's mention of it on Facebook, and it was worth a read. I enjoyed the mystery and loved that the main character was an older woman (in my neck of the woods regarding age!) who discovered that she needed to get a job after the mysterious death of her husband. The main setting is the casino where she becomes employed, and the action is quite interesting. And sometimes dangerous. It's a very good murder mystery as well its being great for its portrayals of Mildred and other characters. One also gets a full and likely a realistic picture of how a casino runs!
What I didn't care for was that the list of "Contents" does not indicate the pages where those chapters begin. Sometimes one's marker slips out of the book or one wants to find a particular chapter in a book, and the page numbers make it much easier do to just that! There were also a few typos that were not caught before (maybe a little more than a few, if I am still remembering that a few months after my read?). Perhaps publisher "The Writers Cooperative of the Pacific Northwest Seattle, Washington" didn't have enough time to completely scan the draft for such errors before publication, which is understandable for a non-for-profit. It's just that it's a distraction for me as I read. Still... it didn't keep me from wanting to read the entire book, to find out "who donnit!"
MILDRED IN DISGUISE WITH DIAMONDS, by Toni Kief gets a 3-star rating on Goodreads from me. If you enjoy mysteries, you just might enjoy this novel. If you also love visiting a casino, this could be the book for you too!
The odds are in favor for potential readers taking a gamble on ‘Mildred in Disguise with Diamonds,’ Toni Kief’s first “Mildred Petrie” book, and mercifully not the last, in the genre of Women’s Fiction/Adventure and Mystery/Crime/Suspense.
Widowed at 71 and unable to make ends meet due to her husband’s exorbitant gambling debts, Mildred applies for a job at the Ivory Winds Casino—ironic, but conveniently close to the one-bedroom condo she lives in. Thinking it’d be nice to get hired as a cashier or money counter, her police background qualifies this septuagenarian for undercover security.
In disguise, Mildred—G-ma—makes her rounds at Ivory Winds. Is she Delilah Hopper, Oliver Brimstone, or Bambi Hunter, while taking advantage of the free buffet.
Double-oh-Seventy-One is a hoot you’ll want to tag along with on every action-filled page: Mildred’s interesting past and the elements of mystery, crime, suspense, and danger await. You’ll also feel part of her family and want to get in on those Pepperidge Farm apple turnovers she’s fond of baking.
Mildred knew that stepping into the casino would bring up memories of her late husband’s gambling debts, but at 71-years old, she needs a job. The casino is close and hiring. Instead of working as a cashier, she is chosen to work undercover. Her career as a meter maid has only prepared her for some of what she’s in store for with this new job.
What a whirlwind! I never expected to read a book where the main character was over 70 and still running around getting into trouble! It was neat reading a book with a character you don’t normally see as the main character. Mildred is a great blend of sarcastic, witty, humorous, and get-it-done undercover detective. Her disguises are hilarious.
The story was fully fledged and the mystery was layered. Mildred got her share of bruises during her investigations, but also stepped down when the big guys were needed to catch the bad guys.
I loved the insights into a large Casino and the life of an older and semi-retired lady.
I gave this four stars because Mildred is wonderful. So much humanity in her experience. She echoes felons my widowed mother has expressed. I loved her antics and the way she embraces her job. She's a kindly Mrs. Pollifax for the world.
I wish the writer had developed the plot a little more. The story meanders with far too much narrative. Sadly, it bogs down the story and detracts from the thoroughly charming Mildred. I could read a dozen books about this character. I hope the writer continues to develop her skills and hones more mysteries for sweet Mildred to solve
This is hilarious, and captivating. Such a great collection of characters all on the edge of believable and with so much more to tell us about their back stories I suspect. There is great humour, drama and a mystery to solve as well. I really enjoyed the pace and setting of the book, and of course Mildred has to be one of my new favourite characters - you just don't get many retired women in starring roles!

Nostalgia, longtime celebrities, and the old Vegas strip highlight Toni K. Kief’s smart and humorous story about a savvy septuagenarian’s after-retirement gig as an undercover mole walking the floor of a popular casino.
This well-written and nostalgic jaunt through the titled character’s storied past takes readers back to the days when Tom Jones, Wayne Newton, and Elvis—lit up the stage, drew crowds of idol-worshipers, and reigned supreme, making permanent landmarks out of certain Vegas casinos. Readers will enjoy the many reflections on the past 50-years of Vegas-life as Mildred gets to know the casino staff, makes friends on the floor, and enjoys the free all-you-can-eat buffets. But even as she hones in on several undercover criminal investigations involving common crimes like purse-snatching, and pick-pocketing, our lead character is shaken when she’s confronted with an all-out armed robbery, and the way she reacts to the situation might just cause readers to rethink Mildred’s true nature.
Lief injects her dauntless but lovable heroine with an unforgettable personality. Mildred’s high-connections generate much curiosity, nostalgia, and humor as she parcels out tidbits of information about her relationships with Vegas icons like Jerry Lee Lewis and discloses a secret love affair with no other than the King himself. Kief’s secondary characters support the story well and provide an excellent foil for Mildred’s startling revelations about the Neon City’s past. There is definitely a sense of history that can be found and treasured between the pages of this memorable read.
You know the old saying, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!”? Well, for Mildred, what happens in Vegas is dramatically revealed as the layers of her former life are intricately peeled back and exposed for all to see. Her expertise as a law enforcement officer, her deep knowledge of human nature, her love for her estranged family, and her deep personal connections with former associates whom she has met both on and off the various jobs she has held during her fascinating and impressive life makes “Mildred in Disguise” an unforgettable all-you-can-eat buffet for readers young and old alike.
Toni Kief’s Mildred In Disguise: With Diamonds is an absolute triumph, a breath of fresh air in the mystery genre that proves adventure has no age limit. From the very first page, Mildred Petrie captivates as an unlikely yet utterly compelling heroine. Her journey from a shattered retirement, blindsided by her husband’s secrets, to the thrilling, dangerous underbelly of casino security is crafted with brilliant wit, heart, and suspense.
Kief masterfully balances tone, delivering a narrative that is both a heartfelt exploration of starting over and a genuinely tense, fast-paced caper. Mildred is a character you instantly root for; her resilience, intelligence, and surprisingly adept skill with a disguise make her an unforgettable protagonist. The contrast between her “sensible shoes” and the high-stakes world of drug deals and armed robbery creates a uniquely engaging and often humorous dynamic. The supporting cast and the vibrant setting of the Ivory Winds Casino are vividly drawn, pulling you completely into Mildred’s unpredictable new world.
This is more than just a cozy mystery, it’s a story of rediscovery and empowerment wrapped in a expertly plotted thriller. The pacing is impeccable, making it truly the “breathless page-turner” promised. Mildred’s voice is authentic and sharp, and her investigation is both clever and satisfying to follow.
Mildred Unchained is off to a spectacular start. It’s the perfect read for anyone seeking a smart, character-driven story full of surprises, proving that the most exciting chapters can begin when you least expect them. A sparkling, five-star debut for a heroine who deserves a long series. I cannot wait to see what disguise Mildred dives into next
Mildred finds herself widowed after her husband passes away unexpectedly, taking his secrets to the grave and leaving her with large debts and more questions than answers. Mildred, a 70 something former meter maid, finding herself at a loss as to how she is going to make ends meet, comes out of retirement, taking a job as undercover security at the very casino that was her husband's downfall. Solving minor crimes and handling disturbances becomes Mildred's everyday routine as she assumes several different undercover disguises, changing personas as one would change underwear, Mildred searches for answers regarding some of her husband's secrets. Mildred, over 70, yes, washed up and down? No way. She is a feisty plucky g-ma, and she can hold her own. I loved Mildred's character and her alter-personalities. She is one entertaining senior citizen. This is a quick, easy read, with enough intrigue thrown in to keep you guessing and laughing out loud till the end. I look forward to more of Mildred's capers, as they are sure to bring a smile and a laugh. Highly recommend for a quick weekend fun read. Thank you to the publishers at Books Go Social and to Net Galley for the free ARC, I am leaving my honest review in return.
Absolutely terrific read. What a terrific plot and loved the fighting spirit of the main character who at the age of 71 finds herself in dire need of money and gets a job at the local casino. The casino that was responsible for the suicide of her husband after debts from gambling piled up. A plot that involved loan sharks, prescription medication theft, thefts and murder. Not forgetting the numerous attempts to take her out. Her cold logical approach and observation skills earn her the respect of the security team as her undercover work generates results plus a host of new friends. With her family trying to keep her safe whilst she fights tooth and nail to live the way she wants. A wonderful mix of humour, devious plots, betrayal and finally the big take down. Could all this have anything to do with a cold murder case or the 'suicide' of her husband? A wonderful read - think James Bond as a senior woman and you are on the right track.
Mildred is 71 years old and has been looking forward to a carefree retirement with her husband. In her previous life, she was a meter maid and he was a police officer. He's convinced her to sell their home and move into a condo. Lovely. Except that on the day they are to move he has a heart attack and dies. Mildred discovers that there is no money. He's gambled it all away and went into debt with loan sharks. Mildred realizes that she has to get a job even at her age. She goes to the local casino where she is offered a job in casino security. After all, who would suspect a little old lady wandering around. My only quibble is, where is she getting the money to buy all the wigs and costumes. Yes, she shops at thrift stores and eats for free on the job, but, still, her outfits and wigs cost money which should be hard for her to afford. This minor setback aside, reading about this feisty, imaginative grandma is a joy.
This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author. I liked Mildred, a feisty lady in her seventies who has to find work because all her pension has gone to pay her dead husband’s debts. She becomes a master of disguises and throws herself both into her work and in her investigations of thefts at the casino and into a cold case her husband had kept notes on.
I found myself glad that I have been and stayed in a hotel in Las Vegas, for it helped me to understand how hotel casino and show theatres are all connected, otherwise I would have found it confusing. I liked the characters in the book but of course, until the explanations are revealed, I found I was suspicious of them all. Although some of the culprits were discovered, obviously there is more to come. I did think that the book was a tad too long, I found myself skimming over some it as it seemed a little long-winded in places. However, it did not spoil my enjoyment of the story as a whole.
Toni Krief's "Mildred in Disguise with Diamonds" follows the footsteps and missteps of Mildred Petrie, a 71-year-old who is thrust into the middle of criminal activity after she accepts a job at a casino. She's retired from law enforcement but her specialty was illegal parking. She takes the job after learning that her deceased husband, an ex-cop, left her with his gambling debts. Her position at the casino is undercover, observing shoplifters, pickpockets, and other crimes. She does her job with various disguises. But after a robbery, she is drawn deep into the investigation after capturing one of the would-be robbers. All this happens while dealing with family matters, including the wedding of one of her sons. Krief has weaved an entertaining novel that unfolds with new developments until the very end. She has mixed the whodunit with humor, clever and sassy dialogue, and interesting characters.
I love Mildred. Instead of a young, sexy main character, Toni Kief writes about a spirited septuagenarian who loves life, rock and roll, and desserts and is curious enough to get herself into all sorts of trouble. Walmart greeter? Not this lady! She gets a job as an undercover detective at a Las Vegas casino. She adopts several disguises to protect her identity, and her alter-egos are so believable that she finds herself in some very interesting situations and a few dangerous ones. Her life gets really complicated, and the story gets very entertaining. Toward the end, in order to tie up all the loose ends, the author does a bit too much telling instead of showing; however, I still look forward to reading another Mildred story in the near future.
Book Review Mildred in Disguise with Diamonds by Toni Kief on Ebook format. Mildred is a romp of a book. From the start you like and get to love the main character Mildred. A reader will find themselves wishing they could join in on Mildred’s countless breakfast, lunch, and dinner dates with various characters. Mildred loves to eat, and I found that endearing. That’s exactly what this book is, endearing. There are elements of actions, mystery and intrigue throughout the story, but mostly the reader wishes nothing but the best for the main character. I have one complaint Mildred is a bit long. About midpoint in the book I found my interest waning. I think the series might work better in short novella spurts, but that is my only complaint.
I Love Mildred. A 71 year old woman who is dealing with some hard life blows. But she does not fall apart. She does not run to her grown up children for help. She deals with it. Which means getting a job at her advanced age of 71. Thankfully the local casino recognizes some unique skill sets Mildred can bring to the table. This is a great book. It was not a humorous book although there were some funny moments. It was more a book that showed me how a senior citizen can contribute in unique and productive ways. Spotting criminals in a casino and being an important member of a group of people investigating crime was fascinating to me. Especially in the casino environment, my favorite place to vacation. I could not put the book down.
Mildred In Disguise With Diamonds (Mildred Unchained Book 1) by Toni Kief. BooksGoSocial, 2017.
This delightful, entertaining, and very easy to read book describes life after retirement for recently widowed, feisty Mildred, unexpectedly short of money, back in the workforce, undercover in casino security.
Aside from some eyebrow-raising Elvis details, the story moved along quickly for me. I enjoyed it. Three and a half stars rounded up to four.
Disclosure: I received a review copy of Mildred In Disguise for free via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. #MildredInDisguise #NetGalley
Delightful book, her situation has happened to others. A husband who gambled it all away. The debt collectors wanted payment, and at seventy one, she just hoped she could enough for groceries, by hocking her wedding ring, A job at the casino doing security work, brought a smile, for this is where he gambled it at. Who would think she was working undercover, and looking forward to the buffet table. You will love Mildred, a new phase in her life and she is tackling it with laughs, enthusiasm and having fun.
