A Sweetwater River Romance by Misty M. Beller is exactly what it sounds like it would be – sweet and romantic. It’s not without its harrowing and deeper moments though, making it a well-rounded story that appeals to a variety of readers.

Tori and Ezra know each other only by first initials & last names – and the letters they’ve been exchanging. Yet when Tori needs a safe haven for herself and her cousin Opal, she runs to Ezra. I thought this was a testament both to Tori’s desperation and Ezra’s integrity, something so a part of him that she could sense it just from his letters. She’s been hurt in such depraved ways by men she should have been able to trust that, for Tori to inherently know that Ezra would provide refuge, says a lot about him. I personally love these kinds of heroes – the ones that exude safety and protection and integrity just by being themselves. (There’s something to be said for a reformed bad-boy hero too on occasion, of course.) And I love Tori, too! To have overcome what she’s endured and still retain her inner strength and determined spirit is admirable and inspiring.

Her journey to a relationship with God is sweet and gentle – and realistic. She has been through so much ugliness at the hands of other people, things done to her that she didn’t ask for, shame that shouldn’t be hers to wear. How could God allow those things to happen if He, in fact, does love her as Ezra says?? These are questions that needed to be wrestled with for Tori’s story to have authenticity. And Beller accomplishes this without giving pat answers or stopping the story for a sermon.

Bottom Line: A Sweetwater River Romance by Misty M. Beller is a tender story of healing and hope. Tori and Ezra are enjoyable and layered characters, and I’m excited to read Opal’s story too (A Mountain Christmas Romance) when i have time. The romance between Tori and Ezra is just as sweetly done as their own individual stories, and I loved watching them fall in love. While this book is the third in a series, it still reads nicely as a standalone. However, fans of the previous books will enjoy becoming reacquainted with familiar characters.

I really enjoyed listening to the Audible version of this novel. It was well done by both author and narrator. It delicately deals with the heroine's past abuse and her striving to protect her cousin. The hero was a great and so sweet! There was a nice happy ending.

Once I began reading this story, I could hardly set it down. A Sweetwater River Romance is book three in the Wyoming Mountain Tales, but can stand alone if you have not read books one and two. I, however, have read the first two books and it was such a joy to get to read Ezra’s story. And what a story it was!

Ezra was a great hero. He was honorable, brave, compassionate, and true. He was willing to do whatever it took to keep Tori and her cousin, Opal, safe. And he had such a great heart. He struggled with doubts sometimes, yet had a strong faith that he lived out.

Tori had a painful backstory. This novel follows her road to true freedom, from a victim who felt helpless, with no understanding of God, to a woman able to put her past behind her and trust in a God who wants to save her. Tori was a complicated mix of fear and bravery. I loved reading about her journey.

Misty another well written story.
I enjoyed Tori and Ezras adventures.
Well developed characters and I could imagine myself riding the pony express and driving the stages.
How exciting that would've been not to mention what a handful of reins to have in your hands!!
As I've said in other novels, you can't just have one favorite character. I loved them all.
Ezra especially because he proved that not all men are alike. Just like all women are not alike.
Tori because she has a determination that helps the fitest for survival even in the hardest of times. She also has a caring sid's to get. I like that too.
I like the fact that Misty included Mara and Josiah as secondary characters
I recommend this book very strongly
I received this book for free. No compensation was received and all words are from my heart

Great read. This book gives us Ezra and Tori's story. Ezra being the youngest of the Reid family he has been given the responsibility of taking care of things while big brother Zeche is off on his mountain exploration and sister Mara has married and has her own family now. Ezra starts corresponding with Tori and the two become friends via letters. When things become desperate for Tori and her cousin they flee their home and arrive on stage to Ezra's. He was unaware of their coming and was totally unprepared of what to do with the two ladies. After many disappointing attempts at finding them a safe home with suitable jobs he decides the best option is for Tori to marry him. She has other ideas and the journey really begins for these two. This story will give you many ups and downs and you will fall in love with these characters. I absolutely love this series.

A Sweet River Romance

Tori decides to find a pen pal and then her and cousin ends up going to where he lives at. He lives and works at the place where he takes care of the wagons and horses coming by. He also does the telegraph. The way of communicating in those days. I like how they used the telegraph machine to help find where Ezra is by contacting several towns around the area. He takes Tori and Opal to stay with his sister just a couple miles away. This is a 3rd in the series, it does not appear to be a continuation buy I will definitely have to put the other books on my list to read. I love reading about this time period and Misty writes an exciting book. I look forward to reading more of her books, especially more of this series.

Deep

There is a lot of emotional baggage and scars to over come. This is a clean Christian romance that deals gently with sexual abuse.

I really enjoy reading this author. Her storylines are intriguing, the characters are well written, and the settings you can picture when you close your eyes. I did not read the other books, and I had no issues following along. I love the research that goes into this story. I enjoyed learning as I was going along. Heartwarming story, page turning masterpiece.

What a wonderful story! Ezra and Tori are so perfectly matched up, and it was enjoyable watching the events bring their hearts together. Ezra takes courage from his desire to protect Tori and her cousin, and Tori learns to trust Ezra because of that courage. This is worth reading again!

Why This Book:
After thoroughly enjoying Misty M. Beller’s “This Treacherous Journey” (which I reviewed earlier this month), when I saw another opportunity to review one of her books, I jumped at it.

Opening Line (from Chapter 1):
Dear T. B.,

In response to your advertisement seeking a partner in correspondence, I find the idea more than a little intriguing.

First Impressions:
This book opened with the text of the advertisement placed by “T. B.” of “Boiling Springs Township, Pennsylvania” seeking “a literate person in the western territories willing and eager to correspond with an easterner on a variety of topics.” After this, we read the initial response letter written by “E. Reid” of “Rocky Ridge Stage Stop, Wyoming Territory.” I’ve chosen to share the first line of this letter above.

Both of these, while important and intriguing, read like a prologue even though they are not labeled as such. The real action begins after this and starts as follows:

"OCTOBER, 1866
WYOMING TERRITORY

'Looks like it might snow.'

Tori Boyd pressed the creases flat in the writing paper as she studied the concise handwriting, a challenging exercise with the sometimes-violent rocking of the stage coach."

As you can see, we immediately feel some tension in the situation with the threat of snow and the mystery of the clearly important letter. As the first scene unfolds, the stakes increase and the reader is immediately engaged in the story. I wondered what would await them at their destination and already wanted to know what would become of the two women after that. (Tori and her cousin, Opal, are both on the stage)

Characters:
Victoria “Tori” Boyd – Eighteen-year-old Tori has endured a very harsh life, which has forced her to mature beyond her years, but she hasn’t let it beat her down or diminish her determination to protect and care for her slightly older cousin, Opal. She is determined to find freedom for them both – and never to trust or depend on a man. Unfortunately, she has been left little choice but to seek assistance from her distant correspondence partner, Ezra Reid.

Ezra Reid – To say Ezra is surprised by Tori and Opal’s appearance on his doorstep is an understatement. Yet, this responsible, compassionate, and honest man overcomes his shock and appoints himself as their advocate and protector. His actions throughout the story are an incredible picture of what it means to truly love – first as a brother in Christ, and later, as a man in love with a woman he desires as his wife.

Opal Boyd – Opal is quite different from her cousin. Where Tori is stubborn, quick to speak her mind, and occasionally reckless, Opal has a quiet strength and gentle wisdom that helps her to find the good in the bad. Don’t mistake her quiet or gentle for meek, however. Every bit as loyal and courageous as Tori, Opal doesn’t back down when the going gets tough.

Mara English – Her story having already been told in A Pony Express Romance, Mara is Ezra’s loving, if a bit overprotective, big sister. I can’t say a whole lot more about her role in this story without giving away some of the plot, but it was fun to see her story continue as Ezra’s developed.

Josiah English – Mara’s husband spends most of his time working their horse ranch, but he still manages to be the doting husband and helpful brother-in-law we want him to be.

Emotional Engagement & Pacing of the Story:
With solid tension all along the way, this one is a page-turner, for sure. While there are a couple points that let you catch your breath, it’s only just enough to do so before things start cracking again and you have to resist the urge to skim ahead. And you don’t want to skim ahead, trust me. There are no wasted words here, just good, compelling storytelling that gets you aching or rooting for the characters (depending on the scene) and eager to see what happens next.

Elements I especially liked/disliked:
The only nit-picky thing I wasn’t sure about was one particular paragraph of the thought process Ezra goes through in the aftermath of the crisis scene. It just seemed a tad over-the-top ideal, to me, but I can’t argue that it didn’t fit Ezra’s character or that it isn’t possible someone would think like that. So this is just my opinion, but it pushed the edges of believable for me.

On the other hand, I absolutely loved, loved, loved how Ezra reacted to Tori’s past and how he thoughtfully chose his actions and words in light of it. The man is seriously swoon-worthy! (and it’s not about his looks) Talk about sacrificial, selfless (not spineless!) love! He knows it’s an action not a word, ladies.

Themes:

Why God allows “bad things” to happen to “good people.” – Yep. The author went there. And without getting preachy.

Learning to trust.

Ending:
I have to say that I could not have loved this ending more. The author resisted the pressure to give readers the ending they expect and might even (mistakenly) think they wanted. Instead, she gives us an ending that epitomizes true love in action and left me sighing with joyful contentment.

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5 stars

As I began to read the story, I knew I was in for a grand adventure. I’ve had pen pals before when I was younger. It was fun to read about where they lived . I never once thought to travel to visit my pen pal though. Tori has been corresponding with her pen pal for awhile. With no other option she and her cousin take off to a new territory. They are hoping to find a place that is safe and start over. Tori has endured a tough life and maybe with a fresh start, she can finally find happiness. I admire her bravery for traveling so far without a real plan. I wonder what her mysterious pen pal will think when she shows up in his town? I love how the author gives us a wonderful character who is fierce and determined to make life better for her and her cousin Opal.

Ezra was truly shocked when he realizes who has stepped off the stagecoach. What in the world has he gotten himself into. I could just see his look of utter shock when Tori reveals who she is. Can you imagine what must be going through Ezra’s mind? I loved Ezra and found him to be such a gentle person. Even though he was unprepared for Tori and Opal, he is willing to help them out. The book captured a time when it was hard to make a living. Towns were just beginning to sprout up and families had to find ways to survive. I loved the feel of a good western story mixed with a bit of danger and romance. Will Tori learn to trust a man again? Can she open up to Ezra and allow him to share his faith?

The book is very well written and I loved the description of how a telegraph machine works. We have cell phones and texts that are easily retrieved. What would we do if suddenly we were left with only a telegraph machine to correspond with? Tori and Opal have secrets that hold them back from being happy. Will Ezra be able to convince them that they are safe and that God loves them? I really enjoyed the story and loved how the author allowed readers to be taken back to a time when survival was hard, faith was important and people helped each other.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Misty Beller - A Sweetwater River Romance
Torie and Opal were fleeing from evil. They didn't know that they were running towards a new life: a life filled with GOD's love and protection. Torie never met a man like Ezra. Could she trust him? Could she open her heart?

Ezra didn't expect Torie and Opal to show up at his front door. He especially didn't expect to fall in love.

I loved this book. It had all the elements that I love: the location, the time period, mystery, romance, danger and the promise of GOD'S neverending care and love.

I received this free to review.

Misty Beller:
I love books. I always have, and my love affair only grows stronger.

There's something about immersing myself in a story - becoming an intimate part of new lives, feeling their struggles. The desperation, the elation, the emotions, the love.

I don't know about you, but my life can get crazy...busy...chaotic. Historical fiction gives me a haven, allowing me to immerse in a simpler time and place. And add in remote mountain settings - log cabins and horses and snow...what could be better?

As a Godly woman, Christian romantic fiction is even more of a draw because it provides a place where I don’t always have to be concerned about inappropriate language or too-graphic love scenes. It’s a “safe zone” where my imagination and emotions can run wild and free, living out exciting times and experiencing God-orchestrated happily-ever-afters – without having to clean-up at the end of the day.

I hope you'll spend some time with me, releasing yourself into the abandon of a great book.

"A Sweetwater River Romance" by Misty M. Beller is the third book in the (Wyoming Mountain Tales) series. When a book is part of a series I have to read all in the order they were written and so I read the first two and I have to say that this series left me wanting to read more of these characters. The series is about two brothers and a sister and even though the series connect together I am going to say that each one can be read as a stand alone and still be enjoyed.

"A Sweetwater River Romance" by Misty M. Beller is a story of healing and trust. Tori and her cousin leave their quiet Pennsylvania town to go to the mountains to get away from a dangerous situation and hopes that Ezra can save them.

I couldn't put these books down until I had read them in their entirety because of all the events that happened in the stories. The scenes were written so well that I could see the snow piles in my mind as I read the book as well as I could feel the pain and the sorrow of each of these characters in each of the three books.

I think "A Sweetwater River Romance" is my favorite of the three because it brings all the characters together at the end of the novel. Another reason is because the heroine is named Tori which is one of my granddaughter's name and we all like things that we can relate to when we read.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

I really liked the beginning of this book. In fact, I almost wanted more of the letters between Ezra and Tori. I thought it would have been a great way to learn even more about them and their budding "friendship". But even so, I loved Tori's braveness in going to the town Ezra lives in as a refuge. She left everything she knew, and didn't seem scared in the least. But what really got me, hook, line and sinker, was when Ezra and Tori first came face to face. They had never seen each other in person, and yet there was this tension about them as if they knew exactly who each other was. **Sigh** that's the kind of stuff we see in romance movies.
Ezra was the kind of hero every girl wants to read about. Strong, steady, caring, and willing to fight for his lady. It may not have been evident in every single scene, but his characteristics really shined throughout most of the book. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book to me was the inclusion of the telegraph. Tori was just enchanted by it, and I wonder during that time period how many women they would have used for it. Not knowing much about the telegraph and how it works, I thought it was a fun addition to the story and I enjoyed learning about it.
Overall this was a great story. Although it is part of a series, I felt it could be easily read as a stand alone for those who have not yet read the first couple of books. I look forward to reading more by Misty Beller in the future!

BACK OF THE BOOK BLURB

(copied from Amazon.com)

Taking flight from their quiet Pennsylvania town seems like the only way for Tori Boyd to protect her dearest cousin's virtue. And the success of their escape may now depend on the man she's been writing letters to for over a year now in the vast wilds of Wyoming Territory.

Ezra Reid has finally stepped out from under the shadow of his older brother and sister, now having full responsibility to man the Rocky Ridge Stage Stop through the winter. The success or failure of the stage and telegraph contracts falls squarely on his shoulders, and he's entirely focused on the work - at least until his mysterious correspondence partner shows up on his doorstep.

As Ezra takes on the search for a proper situation for Tori and her cousin, there seem to be no good options for the ladies. Especially since Tori won't even discuss the one option that might succeed - marriage. When the danger chasing the women takes on a form none of them anticipated, how far will Ezra have to go to keep Tori and her cousin safe? It'll take a lot more than luck to ensure his heart is the sole casualty.

MY REVIEW

Another book I hated to put down, I think this has happened with every one of Misty's books that I've read. She does such a great job of writing that you can't wait to see what is going to happen next. I highly recommend this book, BUT, you really do have to read the series in order to really enjoy it.

Have you ever had someone who you write to but don't really know? I have had plenty of pen pals and honestly I do now as well. I love writing letters, letters telling people about my relationship with God, helping them grow their relationship with Christ as well as them encouraging the growth of mine. In A Sweetwater River Romance, Tori Boyd has been writing to Ezra Reid for over a year. They haven't met but that is about to change. Tori and her cousin are escaping from their quiet little Pennsylvania town leading her to the doorstep of Ezra Reid. Ezra has lived in the shadow of his brother and sister for too long, taking a stand and stepping out from the shadow, Ezra is manning the Rocky Ridge Stage Shop through the winter.

This story will leave you on the edge of your seat, a Christian Historical Romance mixed with a tad of suspense will leave you wanting more. This is the third book in the Wyoming Mountain Tales series by Misty M. Beller, it definitely can be read as a stand-alone. I am honestly looking forward to reading the other books in this series. This is one book you will want to add to your TBR pile!! You will not be disappointed.

It is another great read from Misty Beller. This book has her trademark writing style that is easy to follow, a beautifully stark landscape of Wyoming Territory in winter of the late 1860s, a hint of suspense, a tender and sweet romance, lovable but imperfect characters, a good-paced plot, and a natural, believable faith thread that introduces the main character Tori to God who is loving and holds out redemption and salvation. Anyone who enjoys Christian historical romance would love this book.

Tori is a broken woman with an abused past. She doesn’t trust men and relies on her grit and determination to keep her cousin Opal and herself safe as they flee their home in Pennsylvania for the wilderness of the Wyoming Territory. She is feisty but gets in trouble because of her impulsiveness. Ezra is a kind, loyal, thoughtful, honorable, faithful man operating a stage coach stop and telegraph office. His patience and commitment to see both women safely employed are commendable.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, Mountain Christmas Romance, to see what becomes of Opal.

A Horrible Way to Be Treated!

Tori was introduced to sexual abuse after her parents were jailed for swindling people. After their arrest she was left in the care of an uncle who allowed men to sexually use her. She did not want this to happen to her cousin, Opal. When her uncle's "friends" started to show an interest in the younger girl, she took her cousin and ran--they left on a cross-country flight to the Wyoming territory, telling no one where they had gone.

Ezra was a telegraph operator at a stage coach stop in Wyoming territory. He also changed out horses on the stage coach line so the horses were fresh--not worn out from the journey. Ezra and Tori had been pen pals, but he had no idea that Tori was coming, with her cousin in tow, to stay at the stage coach station and help out. Tori arrived, and Ezra was concerned about the impropriety of two young, unmarried women staying with a bachelor. Ezra began looking for a place the women to stay and work for their room and board. He found such a place with his sister, who lived in the area and was expecting her first baby.

Things went well until Tori's former abuser found where she was. Will he attack Tori and Opal? Read this book to find out what happened. This is an action-packed story. Enjoy!

When Tori and Opal show up at Ezra's Rocky Ridge Stage Stop and proclaim they are going to stay there and start up a business, Ezra is befuddled. There is nothing around him for miles or days that could support a bakery (the business they want to start). Of course, the women can't stay with him without having a chaperone so he takes them across the river to stay at his sister's place. How these prim and proper women survive in the wilds of Wyoming is fun to read about. Like a little unbelievable that Tori takes off to go to Ezra at Mountain Bluff because he is sick and finds her way, even spending the night under the stars. But she does. Them she takes off again to retrace her steps back to Ezra at Rocky Ridge when Jackson comes upon her and kidnaps her. Tori had a stained life but Ezra finds himself in love with her. The whole part of Tori being kidnapped and having Ezra and Opal on their trail made you hold your breathe as Jackson is choking Tori. All turns out and even a nice ending when Zeche arrives with Gretta so now the two brothers have women they want to marry as Josiah married their sister, Mara. But what about Opal? Who will she find to love her? Look forward to next book in the series.

Another lovely and riveting Christian historical romance novel by Misty M. Beller!
For a genre that's growing on me, A Sweetwater River Romance, is one that grabbed me from the beginning and held me tight throughout.  I appreciate the depth and believability of Beller's characters and the well-envisioned setting.  She builds the story with the utmost care and dangles enough literary carrots to keep the reader enticed throughout!
This, the third book in the Wyoming Mountain Tales series, has successfully spurred me to consider reading the other books in this series; which isn't always the case, but these have me intrigued by the place and era!

My Review
A Sweetwater River Romance is a part of a series and is the third book in that series. I have not read the other books in the series but I did not find that that kept me from enjoying this story. Tori ran an ad looking for a pen pal . Through correspondence she developed a close friendship. Tori and Opal do not have a good home life and take off on an adventure across the country. Due to their past experiences they do not find trust and especially in a man to be an easy thing . Ezra is the youngest in his family. Ezra found himself wanting to protect Tori and her cousin. I found this to be an enjoyable read . This story is a historical type fiction and included a sweet romance. Disclaimer : I was given a complimentary copy of this book but all thoughts and opinions are my own honest ones.

I would really give this book a 2.5 rating.
Tori Boyd is running, running from someone Ezra is sure of it. But how can he help her if she will not tell him the problem? Tori Boyd think she can trust Ezra. But can she trust him enough with her life?

Over all this book was similar the previous one in the series. I found there to be less of a story and more about romance. I found the book interesting but would not necessarily recommend it even if you read the last two books in the series. I realized that Tori and Ezra should have been mentioned in the previous book especially when they are married the same timing as Greta and Zeche. I found this a bit confusing for the time line.

Tori Boyd and her cousin flee Pennsylvania and escape to the Wyoming Territory, to a man Tori has been writing letters to. Ezra Reid runs the Rocky Ridge Stage Stop. He's a telegraph operator.

I enjoy the depth which Misty writes. The description of emotions gives me a front-row seat into each character's heart. The story's plot is interesting during an exciting time. It feels like I'm right there.

I read the book in one sitting, as it's that good. Already, I'm looking forward to the next one in this series.

I had a free copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Tori Boyd and her cousin Opal leave Pennsylvania after her uncle’s employee attacks her, and go to Sweetwater River where her pen pal Ezra Reid runs a stage stop. He puts them up with his sister across the river until he can find safe jobs for them. He finds work for them a couple days away, but when Tori is kidnapped by the same man, Ezra and Opal track and find her. A captivating tale of heartache, love, and strength.

Tori & Ezra

Victoria (Tori) Boyd and her cousin Opal have taken the stage to the Rocky Ridge Stage Stop near the Sweetwater River to escape abuse in Pennsylvania. They have totally unrealistic views of the West. Tori hopes her correspondence partner Ezra Reid will be able to help them open a bakery, but she holds totally unrealistic views of the post Civil War West.

Excellent plotting and charactorization.

Tori and Ezra communicate via letters for one year until she shows up on his doorstep with her cousin. The girls decided to head west to escape sexual abuse. I did appreciate that Ezra was willing to wait for Tori to heal from her past, but the unrealistic courtship progressed too quickly. she changed her mind quickly. Also, there was no salvation message and Tori never personally accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior like Ezra had, but she did pray for God’s protection, and God provided.

The story continues about life along the Sweetwater River; the people who live there; and, the lives they lead. Every day brings a new challenge. Two women have arrived at the Stage Coach Station. Both are beautiful and both seem to be on the run. The story is well written and I look forward to the next book in the series.

This book reads nicely after 1 & 2 in the series although it could be read as a stand-alone. Misty Beller has created another page-turning story that will resonate today as much as in the 1800s. The problems faced by Tori and her cousin Opal are at times painful to read, but they overcome and heal with a reliance on God. A very satisfying read.

Wonderful

I recommend this book! I’ve truly enjoyed reading this book as part of this series. I’m not sure which story I like the best? They are all part of the story woven from one book to the next. All the characters are so good. So if you like a good western romance series, please check this out. ❤️📖📖❤️. Great series! Great storyteller!

Couldn't Put It Down

I know it sounds clichè but I really couldn't put this down.

Once again, Misty writes you into the story as you champion them through to the end. Leaving you hungry to open the next book in the series . . . for just a nibble of more love, wisdom, drama and . . .
