War-torn, resource-stripped, pi**ed off. By 2045 man had all but burnt down his own house. The threat of environmental annihilation loomed, and so a machine was built.

Earth's hostile land spat Willsith into space, hung-over and broken. War had trained him to fight, but when his younger brother died, he denounced it. Now, five years later, he finds himself managing a team of five, maintaining section 229 of the great solution: Earth s Halo. This ring of carbon circles the globe in near space, acting as a giant solar panel, producing power for Earth s regeneration. It s also a jump-point to Mars, and a damned rock-magnet.

But stray rocks are the least of Willsith s worries.

When 229 uncover information about the ring administration, Control, they find themselves destined for lobotomised slavery on the new Mars city, Tacern. Willsith is left no option but to lead an escape.

Battling through the biggest machine ever made, to escape into unknown space, Willsith struggles to overcome a lifetime of violence in order to free his friends, and to save the Earth from a new kind of terror.

I can not believe the amount of pure effort and force it took for me to get through this book. This is by far probably one of the hardest reads to get through this year. And you know I like science fiction, but this one? I just... I don't know what made it so hard to read, but this book was boring me to the depths of my soul. It wasn't clear why things are happening, the setting just sort of appears and isn't detailed very much (or maybe I was too bored to keep paying attention?) It was just too hard to stay invested in the story. More than that, there's one female character. She's young and sexy. Yeah, that always works so well in science fiction.

I was disappointed to be unable to get into this one AT ALL, because there are a lot of good or alright reviews. I just don't get it. The first 20% I even went back to reread, in case I missed something CRITICAL that... makes the book readable. I don't think I missed anything. It's deathly boring. If you want good scifi, pick The Freeze-frame Revolution, Doorways in the Sand or Remembrance of Earth's Past instead.

I thank the publisher for giving me a free copy of the book in exchange to my honest review. This has not affected my opinion.

I finished this book in three days flat. A friend recommended it to me and I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised. This book is a very good all-round read.

The story is riveting, the plot is intriguing, the characters are identifiable and the imagination is awesome - I'm still surprised this is the author's first novel.

I read between 35-40 books a year, usually the big name authors like King, Grisham, Asimov, Harris - but I must say that this author now has a permanent spot on my shelf. Can't wait for the next one..

Captivating story; bringing human values to the fore in a not-so-far-away potential future! I love the book from start to finish! I couldn't let go of it; it kept me hooked until the last moment. Love the drama and the full on action, in what could be reality in a not so distant future. Good mix of characters, the book is captivating and easy to read, capturing a fight for survival and a fight for the greater good: the saving of humanity. I'm now intrigued by the ending, which leaves room for a follow-up saga. I hope to see the next story soon!

Interesting read. Book has the feel of L. Niven on base premise of a powerr ring built to supply energy. But the degree of political intrigue is another dimension. Basically it the story of a man caught between forces trying to reconcile the violence of his past while retaining human caring for his team! Would of given 4stars but the middle of the book was somewhat confusing with the constant switching of directions of the flow from Dalex , CG.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Canopy Harvest, a sci fi novel with a great story behind all the technological innovations and challenges which the civilization faces in not so such a distant future. As a regularly non sci fi reader, I found the techy bits very accessible and the specific Monty Python-like humour adds that bit of flavour to the story, bringing the characters and their personal struggles closer to its readers, no matter how advanced the humans may be in the future compared to now. Humans still have dreams and goals, they suffer and wonder, whether on Earth or on a ring built around it. And the most intriguing and heart warming twist comes towards the end of the novel, be prepared to be amazed.

This futuristic, action-packed space thriller is unique and unpredictable, and you can read it at three levels: the current action; the inner psychological struggles of its characters (especially with Willsith trying to move on from his military past); and the underlying eco-political war that paints a scary picture of what could happen if we continue to mistreat the planet we live on. Hayday’s vivid descriptions and clever wit pull you into the story and launch you into space and beyond. Counting down to the next book!
