Colonel Jake Thomas has found himself at the edge of disaster once more and managed to pull back from the brink. Defeating the alien armada with the help of AL:ICE (Artificial Life: Intelligent Computing Environment) and without the use of a recreated doomsday device was a great victory. However, it was a victory tainted by the realization that a new NeHaw leadership was in place, and they knew how to fight a war in space. He is once again fighting a two front war, one in space and one on the home front. With cities around the world starting to emerge from the darkness, its troubles at home that have Jake the most challenged. Besides a pregnant Sara, Jacob and Gemma divulge a secret of their own, and it?s one that has Gemma's mother none too happy.
I have really enjoyed this whole Alice series and was thrilled to get ahold of an early release version. It grabbed my imagination and heal my attention from the 1st page. More than one night I had to force myself to put it down and turn the lights off only to drag out of bed the next morning but it was worth it. Charles' writing style is unique and I think he has improved by leaps and bounds from the 1st book to this one. His depth, and ability to have multiple stories going at the same time and keep them all tied together and fit in place was terrific. I hope there is a 5th one in the series coming.
Jake has been enjoying a series of handy victories however with the overthrow of the old mehaw government he now faces an enemy that has a clue and doesn't appreciate the upstarts schooling them in battle. What magic does Jake have left in his hat? Only the stuff of nightmares. Let's hope he doesn't have to use it.
This latest installment in Mr. Lambs Alice series has more space combat the previous books. Space war also has a fairly predictable, but enjoyable, ending. last chapter had better be a set up to a time skipped series Mr. Lamb! 🙌
I hope that Mr. Lamb ends it here. He may want to do a similar endeavor -perhaps generational. But he brought the story to a conclusion. Which I appreciate. I hate endless sequels.
Another great talent from the Alice universe. While down earth is not out and is able to continue to fight and teach the universe humanity has what it takes
It's always fun to watch a author grow. Characters are more clearly defined, plots are well-written. My only problem with this series is that Mr. Lamb still relies on coincidence very heavily. But you can tell he's working on it...
The NeHaw roar back and make the so far one sided space battles more competitive. Lots of special operations and commando stuff in space where lots of alien butt is kicked. Jake continues to deal with the repercussions of bad decisions in his personal life and lots of other romantic crap with the other characters occurs. Did I mention a lot of alien butt was kicked?
Book 4, the stupidity continues . . . In this series Jake is the last person authorized to access the AIs which are the only thing that gives humanity a fighting chance against the aliens looking to enslave them. The aliens have already attacked earth wiping out the majority of humanity and all of human technology except that controlled by the AIs. Jake was stuck in stasis for that attack and subsequent 180 years. This meant Jake was also the sole surviving person who met the requirements for both being the US President and a US voter (since a valid birth certificate is required and those haven’t been issued in 180 years). To access the information the AIs could only divulge upon Presidential order Jake elected himself President. Furthermore, certain aliens only recognize hereditary leadership so to deal effectively with them Jake had to identify himself to a couple of allied alien societies as King of the earth.
So, I ask you, should the sole person able the access the AIs upon which all humanity depends/President/King of Earth be leading a commando raid behind enemy lines? Want to guess how this book begins?
THE SHEER STUPIDITY INVOLVED IN TELLING A STORY WHERE EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON ONE PERSON AND THAT PERSON NEEDLESSLY RISKS HIS LIFE OVER AND OVER AGAIN IS DISGUSTING. PARTICULARLY GIVEN HOW UNNECESSARY IT IS- THE AUTHOR COULD HAVE SIMPLY TOLD US ABOUT THE RAID FROM ANOTHER CHARACTER’S POINT OF VIEW. STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally, this is the last book in the series and yet it fails to resolve the primary conflict. SPOILER the book ends in a draw and a truce.
These books aren't high space opera or hard Sci Fi. I know that in many ways they are overly simplistic with simplistic and in some cases unbelievable characters. That said, they are fun. The premise is excellent. I do not know if this will be the end of the series. If it is, Mr. Lamb wrapped it up nicely.
Found the first three books six months ago with my Kindle Unlimited. This one was worth the wait. Well done Mr Lamb. I enjoyed your storytelling and descriptions. I thought it started slowly, but the second half made up for the slow start!
I got the flue and had 2 weeks bedrest, so started this Audio Book series... and it was simply Wow! Excellent! Well worth the time and read/listen, highly enjoyable and this whole series would make an excellent TV series similar to the Expanse series, but much much better! Love this series!
This AL:ICE series reminds me of Mark Wayne McGinnis style story telling, and my only complaint is that both Mark Wayne McGinnis and Chales W. Lamb need to tripple their story telling output :)
The premise of the AL:ICE facilities is not far fetched, as I worked in the Marine Corps and served in the R&D compliance & oversight all over the U.S., and the authenticity to protocol and military structure was highly enjoyable, as stories based in reality with the "What If" leaps of imagination is appealing to the best characters of humanity, which is well worth the time and money to simply let the "movie" unfold in your mind as you listen!
Considering, this was to be a book on space war, I didn't find that much action associated with war. Sure there were some action but not a whole lot. It was slow moving and even boring at times. I found it just a tad difficult keeping the characters aligned. But, that was a minor issue. The ending was kind of predictable and I found no other real twists in the book. I am disappointed. I expected a little more.
The start of the book was interesting but a big chunk of the middle section was a bit boring. It was filled with inane conversations, wedding preparations etc. Also the harem seems to be rearing its head again, I had hoped Jake had just settled on Sara. Eventually the raids on the NeHaw bases began and the story moved away from the domestic trivia. Unfortunately, even this wasn’t that exciting and the story just drifted to a slightly disappointing ending.
Space is not the Final Frontier When the Planet is Fractured
War has come to the aligned worlds. With Earth as their protector, resources are scattered, with few left to protect the homeland. Still, when a solution is launched, Jake realizes the people of Earth are still a fragmented peoples. A fitting conclusion to this series that leaves a lot yet on the table to be explored. Will there be another?
Last of the series as of now. Loved it. This book was a little slower but wider in scope. We are witnessing Jake's ride to the dreaded REMF status. I hope that is not absolute as his personal power is an attractive for the story. All followers need some one larger that life to lead them. And it's fun. Hope the continuation of the series is soon and wonder what the next obstacle the humans will face in there new space empire journey.
This fourth book is slightly better constructed than the previous books and it fortunately provides sufficient storyline resolution to provide a convenient stopping point. There are more chapters but having reached a reasonable conclusion for the sci-fi storyline, I am content to stop here and not have to deal any longer with this oddly patriarchal society and Jake’s polygamy. I have nothing against polyamory, except in stories like this where the women are all treated as second-class citizens.
This is another great book in the series. As Jake struggles with all that he has accomplished he finds its heard to adjust to his new position in his life. Making decisions that may cost other they lived is a new and frightening thing. But he will prevail in the end. As humanity come out of the dark Jake tries to lead other into the light. Looking forward to the next book.
Not only is this a wonderful tale that captivates you, its very original as I've not read another like it. The only downside is the grammar. The author seems to have done a better job on book 3 but the first 2 were painful to decipher in places. Hopefully he has a decent proof reader finally and other books will continue to improve. That said the first 2 books had me hooked. I will continue to read this series and others by this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series as it reminded me of Battlefield Earth by Ron L. Hubbard. By the time I got to this fourth though, I was bored and just wanted the experience to be over with. I was tired of reading about how many times Jake slept with members of the sisterhood. The space war end was poor and the last paragraph simply made no sense.
very good military sci-fi, except for its harem elements
Good military science-fiction story. Great characters good world building basically a sci-fi military book with harem elements. If you don’t like harem you won’t like this book. Personally I think the harem elements should’ve been left out and more sci-fi put in.
Week long power listen though 2 books, rewarded with peace in the stars!! Now do they focus inward and rebuild Detroit? Probably too late. Despite my dislike of some aspects, I look forward to the next books in the coming years.
Decent story, worth reading. Sitting on the front porch reading, again. Been reading westerns but went back to science fiction. It's almost nine pm so I can read for another hour or so. Still warm out here but not complaining. Sure miss my wife.
Another good read, great story, some interesting twists and of course the bit that leaves you hanging at the end wanting more. I will be reading the next part soon. Keep them coming.
This was a reasonable continuation of this series. The MC is consolidating power and utilizing his people well. The war front is now heading to a Cold War of sorts. Nicely done.
