If I had a nickel for every time these people use the word "Zeitgeist!" I spent half the book wondering why this book is in such a counter-intuitive order. Then it suddenly occurred to me that the book is essentially written as a paean to BF Skinner. These people have a for-real hard-on for BF Skinner. You can almost hear the tears hitting the keyboard as they acknowledge that behaviorism is most often spoken of in the past tense these days.
While I find parts of the book convoluted and *subjective*, overall, it succeeds by being pretty accessible and readable. It's written in a very narrative style and is easily digested. You have to admit though that the book devotes considerable length to various quacks and then completely ignores other people, or, in the case of Piaget, seem more interested in Piaget's hiking, snail-hunting, and stale bread eating habits than presenting his cognitive stages of development. Or you have the chapter on Gestalt where it is stated over and over that despite popular perception Gestalt psychology went beyond the study of perception but then offer absolutely no elucidation on the subject.
I'm not sure if the publishers of this book are responsible for the quiz bank used in the online version of the class I'm taking but the questions I've been subjected to are horrible. Many require arbitrary subjective judgments which might be acceptable if these judgments were even hinted at in the textbooks and some are simply insane. "Which of these theorists would most likely have inspired the musical Jesus Christ Superstar?" Seriously? WTF are you even talking about???

I just finished reading this book and, wow!, it was a great read as to the history of psychology. It was an easy to read and follow book; very well organized. It's a keeper.
It's unthinkable that I am rating a textbook with 5 stars. Who would've thought? :D But this one really is a gem if you are into psychology and/or are studying it at a university level. A textbook, in my opinion, should be interesting to read, not only full of facts, and this one is exactly like that. I am really glad our professor chose it for studying history of psychology.
Written in an easy to read way and I found most of the stories engaging. This book gives you detailed history on the founding of psychology and the people who contributed to it. Starting from physicists and philosophers and everyone in between. There were so many components that I didn't realize before, and also gives insight into how theories were created and generally the underlying reason for why. I thought it is a decent read for psychology majors or anyone interested in the field.
This is the best textbook I have ever been assigned for a class. I love non-fiction and will often read about various subjects outside of my college courses. This text was very enjoyable to read and it felt like reading for fun, not for class. The authors overused the word zeitgeist and I'm sure there were other flaws, but overall, I really enjoyed it. There were so many interesting bits of information, I kept quoting the book to my husband and friends.
Who knew a psychology textbook could be so delightfully absurd? This silly little book manages to be both digestible and hilariously entertaining, making the dusty old theories of great (and not-so-great) psychologists feel like a stand-up comedy routine. With its charming knack for irrelevant details, it illustrates these lofty minds as wonderfully flawed and quirky humans.
I'm using this for my class on the History of Psychology (Psych 601: Systems & Theories in Psychology). Great text for the undergraduate level. Interesting background information on the psychologists and very well organized. Lots of good supplemental materials for the instructor, too. I'm very happy with this textbook for my class.
During my studies in psychology, this was a valuable and informative book. The author established a solid history of the development psychological theory with chapters on structuralism, functionalism, Gestalt, behaviorism, Psychoanalysis and recent developments. It's a book that I kept and rests securely in my library.
First text book I think I've ever read cover to cover for fun. The authors did a great job introducing the constantly changing nature of the history and applying it to psychology, which I appreciated... and then saw play out at the end of the book.
I was too cheap to get the most recent edition (why do textbooks have to be so expensive), so this 2012 edition already mentioned several studies that have been thrown into doubt which we previously thought were quite solid. (E.g. the studies on priming, like the hot coffee study: https://digest.bps.org.uk/2019/01/02/... )
One of the things this book fails to mention, as all of this was probably going down as they were writing it, was the replication crisis in psychology, which is a pretty big deal. Many of the studies I read about in the last chapter were with a large grain of salt because of the above and this. (https://replicationindex.com/2020/01/...) I'd be really curious if the authors talk about this in the more current edition of the book.
I enjoyed reading the character descriptions of many of the figures in psychology's history—I really respected Descartes protection of his privacy and time for deep work by constantly moving (that's dedication), and also was pretty amazed at what happened to (various parts of) his body posthumously. Also I have such respect for Charles Darwin's extremely meticulous efforts to write the Origin of Species, despite his own psychological difficulties.
I'd have to say my least favorite chapter was on Gestalt Psychology. I came away after reading that with... only a vague sense of what it was about, without many concrete details.
Anyways, I finished this book having a better sense of the lay of the field's continual development, and an appreciation for people who struggle with various mental health issues... and end up creating new schools of thought that answer questions that previous ways of understanding psychology weren't doing at the time.
We're still trying to figure out of the earth is revolving around the sun, or the sun around the earth in psychology (or, realistically, that it's actually both with hella nuance), but it's been really fun to read about how we've gotten to where we are now...
4.5 ⭐️ I absolutely loved reading about the history of psychology. Taking this class and having this book as our resource really brought in a new passion for me, especially when it comes to the role women played in the development of the field. Awesome layout of information and very well-rounded when it came to different theories and experiments, as well as the background information on them.

This was a great book, very informative and easy to understand but I felt like it was not organized well. The "timeline" of the book felt like it went back and forth in some areas and didn't always acknowledge the overlapping of some movements.
Not a bad book. A little like review of Psychology concepts but with some Philosophy into it. Was interesting to see all the connections between philosophers and how concepts in psychology were designed.
