The past comes calling... Return once more to the haunted halls of Tenjin Elementary School to explore the what-ifs, should-haves, and could-have-beens of Corpse Party: Blood Covered. After all, didn't everything wrap up just a little too nicely the first time around...?
I absolutely love everything to do with Corpse Party (books, video games, live action movie, and so on) and this book doesn’t disappoint. Recommended to Mature readers that love horror manga/graphic novels.
This book is rated Mature. Basically that's the equivalent of rated R in movie terms so it is probably a good idea not to show to younger readers with the copious amounts of blood and realistic murder (and some slight nudity to a lesser amount.)
This book brings us back to Tenjin Elementary School and like Corpse Party:Blood Covered it is based on the videogame (from what I understand) so when I read the description I thought it might be full of Bad End scenarios from making bad decisions in the game (or in this case different decisions from the original Corpse Party:Blood Covered manga) but found it to be something slightly different instead. In reality this book is full of short manga stories dealing with characters involved in the original manga but they are still in the same time line so we basically get to see what happens to the survivors, some insight on Naho Saenoki's past, new gruesome shorts from around the school from both the main cast as well as some students from another school, and a seriously messed up realization that with Sachiko's power she could have basically killed everyone at anytime if she wasn't a kid ghost playing with her victims.
My favorite part of the book would probably have to be when we get more insight in the character of Mayu Suzumoto who is a likable character and catalyst to the main story. The problem with telling her story in the main books is it might have been disruptive to the plot flow but now thanks to this book we get to see more of this Drama Club cutie. :)
If you haven't played book of shadows then I recommend you buy this instead. You get the same story and plot twists at a much nicer package. The book is more expensive but at least you have an excuse to do all that reading. I've beaten the first two games and you can skip book of shadows. Also, the book does a much better job of filling in the gaps between the first game and the third: Blooddrive. (I'm working on this one and I can't wait for the manga version to come out!)
I'm not too much of a horror fan, however, that being said: this book is so well done and is a good tie in to the game corpse party for 3ds. Picked this up on a whim and it's fantastic. A good horror book doesn't need a bunch of cuss words to get the scare and chill factor this book delivers. The pictures help emphasize how dark and scary this out of world dimension really is. Blood, gore, sadness, anger, slight nudity (which isn't much so don't get too excited). Overall: well done! Very well done! I look forward to getting the different manga series as well as the new video game that's hopefully coming out this fall.
I thought this was going to be a sequel to Corpse Party: Blood Covered, but that's not what this is. This is a story of alternate situations, I suppose you could say. Since this is based on a game, maybe this shows us what we'd see if we made different choices than in the previous series? I'm not sure, but it feels like that to me. This series is definitely more mature and is age rated as such.
This does offer new scenes which made the read interesting, however I did feel myself skimming over story I had already read from the previous series.
3.5/5 The book basically was Gore for the sake of being gore. Now I know that there's others like story to this but this specific book is if you don't know what's going on there's really no story other than kids getting sent to a school and everybody's dying, also every character in the book is below 18 years of age and tell me why at the end of the book they literally had a section for fan service, plus there was so much fan service in the book to begin with and at the end of the book they even apologize for their not being enough fan service excuse me.
was a little disappointed that this one stuck much more closely to the original game's script, but hey, it's still a really fascinating story!
I love alternate universes, so you know ya boy was hanging off their seat tearing through this one. I wish some of the stories had a bit more time to develop, as these feel a bit more like bite-sized versions of the game's branching routes, but that's not to say they aren't solid and well-executed in this artist's style.
An additional few stories following after the main story set in Corpse Party: Blood Covered. If you enjoyed the previous volumes of Corpse Party, I highly recommend picking this one up as well. It is the same Corpse Party you've grown to love from previous series entries!
